Prepping is something that takes time, some level of commitment and usually finds its roots in some motivating reason or lifestyle characteristics. Preppers intentionally work toward a goal or measurement that can be held up to life for comparison. By preparing to have food stored over the winter, you may have a measurement of how […]

It’s sad when people refuse to prep despite what is going on in the world now. We are hanging on by a thread and it’s about to break, yet most people are too stupid too even attempt to set back anything to insure the well-being of their families.
Instead they prefer to spend their days with their head shoved up their own butt so far that they think everything is going to be alright, or the government gives a crap about them and will storm in and save them, or that they can just come to your house when TSHTF…
Non-preppers are a liability to everyone else and are starting to...

Over the past few months I’ve received a lot of email from readers asking me for pointers on how to start their own blogs. It seems like everyone has the “blogging itch” these days, and that’s a good thing, if you truly have something worthwhile to share with the world, then setting up your own website is a great way to do just that.
I started this site in 2008 and It has since grown into the top prepper blog online today, this is a huge community that is made up of thousands of subscribers, with the blog site receiving an average of...

Well folks, it’s that time again! Oh how time flies when you’re prepping for TEOTWAWKI, and you want to know why? It’s because prepping is fun, it’s fun to see just how well prepared you can be where you are while working with the resources that you have. Plus you sleep better at night knowing that you’ve stepped up and done everything possible to protect and provide for yourself and your family after the balloon goes up. At least you didn’t waste your time watching a bunch of men run around in tights tossing a ball back and forth, or some...

If you had to say the topic you do the most research on, what would that be? I think “food” will be the answer for many of us and with good reason. There are few other things as important as food (actually just 2: water and shelter) and there are always ways to improve the way you work towards your food-independence, the way you store your food or the way you cook it.
This week we are looking at some of these aspects of food-preparedness, so make sure to scroll to the bottom and drop a line at the end, in the comments section. Let us know how are you improving your skills when it comes to food.
1. Fermented Vegetables are Healthy and Delicious
“If you have never had fermented vegetables, you don’t know what you are missing. I have a Harsch Crock and love to use it to make things like sauerkraut, and other types of fermented vegetables. The Harsch Crock is from Eastern Europe and my wife loves it.
Once you put the veggies in the crock and put the lid on you fill a gutter with water and that seals the crock and keeps the odors down. My wife likes the finished product but not the smells it gives off while being made.”

2. How to Build a Root Cellar in 7 Steps
“We decided that our little farm needed a root cellar to store our produce in. For those unfamiliar with the term, a root cellar is an underground room that acts like a natural refrigerator, maintaining temperatures in the mid 30’s F in the winter and mid 50’s in the summer.
Step 1: The Hole
Dig a hole in the ground. We are fortunate to have a local gravedigger who is a real artist with a backhoe. He can carve a hole with straight sides almost within an inch of what you ask for.”

3. 6 Old-time Natural Remedies That Work
“Ever wonder if those old-time natural remedies really worked? I love old-fashioned things, but I also know some things we used to do way back when just weren’t smart. That’s what we’re looking at today my friend, the smart things!
Seems everywhere I look, people are turning back to the old ways. There’s something to be said from our mother’s, grandmother’s, great-grandmother’s wisdom, or great-great-grandmother (you whippersnapper you).”

4. Building and Operating a Makeshift Wood Oven
“Introduction
One of the basic needs for any survival situation is a means of cooking food.
The most abundant fuel available is wood. There are many ways to use wood to cook food…the most common being a camp fire or the “rocket stove”. However, these methods are not the most fuel efficient, and a lot of heat is lost during cooking, resulting in excessive fuel consumption.
A more fuel efficient method is to build a wood fuel oven. A wood fuel oven can be made out of a variety of materials…metal, brick, or cinder blocks are ideal, as long as you can make the oven air tight.”

5. Shifting Trends In Food Storage
“Over the last five or ten years that I’ve been prepping I’ve noticed a few different trends in how people have looked at food storage. Food storage for emergency situations is always a popular topic in the prepping community and I’ve seen a lot of attitudes change over the years.
Early on I remember a lot of people approaching the topic with much less thought and planning than they seem to today. A few years back things seemed to quiet down and to my mind become more reasonable.”

If you are like me, you may find prepping for everything to be a little overwhelming. It can seem that no matter how much you have, there just is never enough. I have read hundreds of articles and watched endless videos on what to carry for EDC and how to make a BOB/INCH bag. I also seemed to focus on one aspect at a time and way overdo it while letting the rest slip by. 1.) The Stock Markets Of The 10 Largest Global Economies Are All Crashing : ‘You would think that the simultaneous crashing of all of the largest stock markets around the world would be very big news. But so far the mainstream media in the United States is treating it like it isn’t really a big deal. Over the last sixty days, we have witnessed the most significant global stock market decline since the fall of 2008, and yet most people still seem to think that this is just a temporary “bump in the road” and that the bull market will soon resume. If you’re only preparing foods to survive, it doesn’t have to be fancy but it does need to be safe and nutritious. Some foods aren’t nutrient-dense but they are packed with carbs that will give you energy to keep going. You need to learn how to prepare these foods BEFORE SHTF. Today we’re going to talk about some basic foods that you need to know how to prepare for survival.
Bread and Biscuits
Though bread and biscuits aren’t necessarily nutrient-dense, they are light to carry and provide a quick source of carbs.
They also help other foods such as meats go a bit further toward filling your belly. You can stretch your valuable food supply by knowing how to combine flour, butter, milk and salt to make biscuits.
Plus, once you know how to make biscuits, you can get fancy by adding fruits, spices (cinnamon is awesome in a biscuit!), vegetables (my favorite is a bit of jalapeno pepper) or sugar to spice them up.
Add some yeast and sugar and you can make bread, too.
Gravy
Gravy is another one of those foods that will help you fill bellies and stretch your food supply. All you need is fat, flour, salt, pepper and water or milk. I personally like to start my gravy by adding water to the browned flour to get the base going, then add some milk to make it creamy but in a pinch it can be made with just water. Or, if you have a cow but a limited supply of water, you can always use just milk.
Butter
Butter is a good source of fat in a survival situation. Considering how easy it is to make and how easy it will be to barter, knowing how to make butter in a survival situation is a no-brainer. All you need to do is skim the cream from your milk and shake it in a jar. It helps if you let the cream sit out for a few hours. Then you just put it in a jar and shake it.
You’ll notice chunks forming, then you’ll see it forming a solid clump. Once you have the solid clump, stop shaking. Pour the contents of the jar through a cheesecloth or linen towel then rinse the butter under cool water. Put the butter in a bowl. Don’t throw away the juice – that’s buttermilk and it makes excellent biscuits and pancakes.
Using a wooden spoon or flat spatula, work the butter around in the bowl so that you press the rest of the liquid out of it. Once you have all of the liquid out of it, add salt to taste and you’re done. You can also use a butter churn if you have one to make larger batches.
Jerky
Jerky is light and is a great source of protein. It’s easy to carry and lasts for a week or two after you make it if you don’t preserve it as long as you prepare it properly.
Slice the meat as thin as you can get it, season it with your choice of seasonings or marinade and hang it to dry over a fire, assuming you don’t have power. You can even dry it in the sun if it’s hot and sunny enough but you need to start in the morning.
Flour
If SHTF, you may not have a source of flour. If you have access to wheat or nuts, you can make your own flour by using a hand mill or a mortar and pestle, though the latter isn’t a great choice because it takes so long. Remember that homemade flour will still have the oils from the nuts or seeds that it’s made from so it will go rancid fairly quickly.
Milk
There are a couple of different kinds of milk that people consider palatable; cow milk and goat milk.
Regardless of which one you choose (or have access to), you need to follow proper sanitation procedures in order to keep bacteria from making you or your family sick.
Wash the udders well and use clean pails. Strain the milk before you drink it.
If you want to go a step further, you can pasteurize it by heating it to 161 degrees for 15 seconds.
Cheese
Cheese is a good source of protein even if you’re a lacto-vegetarian. You can make a simple cheese from milk by adding a bit of acid such as vinegar or lemon juice. The important part here is that you need to find the right ratio of milk to acid.
Too much milk and it won’t curdle. Too much acid and it will be tart. Just bring your high-fat milk (you can add cream if you’d like) to just below a simmer, using low heat, then add in the acid and some salt.
You’ll see it instantly separate into curds of cheese and whey, the liquid part. Strain these out by placing it in a cheesecloth or linen towel then squeeze the rest of the whey out. You have a smooth cheese similar to ricotta. If you want it firmer, squeeze it a bit more then chunk it up and add some cream and salt to it and you have cottage cheese.
If you want it a bit firmer, place it in a linen cloth and press it for a couple of hours between two plates with a weight on top. This results in cheese that has a feta consistency. Press it like this overnight and you’ll have cheese firm enough to cut into cubes. You can always spice it up any way that you’d like before pressing it.
For Vegetarians
Without a doubt, food on the fly will require some advance preparation if you’re a vegetarian. You can dehydrate fruits for carbohydrates and can vegetables for more nutrition. If you’re a lacto-vegetarian, biscuits are a good source of carbs, too. If you have access to nuts, you can make nut butters. Beans are going to be a staple for you too, so dry or buy plenty for your stockpile.
Rendered Fat
This process can be a bit stinky but the rendered fat will come in handy in a variety of ways. You can use it to cook with or to waterproof your clothing. It’s a bit of a process but will be worth it. The actual process is a topic of its own that I touched on in this article.
Pemmican
Pemmican was used by Native Americans for centuries as a near-perfect combination of protein, fat and carbohydrates. It’s energy-dense and it takes your body a while to digest it so it’s a good source of long-term energy. You make it simply by using equal parts (use weight, not volume) of dried meat, rendered fat and dried berries.
Pulverize the dried meat and berries into minced portions, almost a powder. Add a handful of the fat and start working it in to the meat and berries. Continue mixing the fat in until you have everything mixed thoroughly and it’s sort of dough-like.
If you have chunks of fat left, continue kneading until it melts into the mixture. Separate out into balls about the size of ping-pong balls and store in an air-tight container. As long as the meat was dried completely and the fat was rendered properly, you don’t need to refrigerate pemmican. Eat is in small portions though because it IS energy-dense. You don’t need much of it to survive and even thrive.
There are many foods that will serve you well in a survival situation but it’s important that you learn how to make them before you NEED to know how. If you have any other food that you think should be included on the list, tell us about it in the comments section below.

A GPS is nice, however it can make you lazy about finding your way around the city. In a time of crisis that can easily be your undoing because you will not have a viable means to find your way out of the city as quickly and efficiently as possible.
So you’ll come to the conclusion that you are as helpless as a baby in the woods unless you know how to use maps and apply natural navigation methods to the city environment.
That’s why you must have already developed and tested your escape plans for leaving the city before any crisis occurs. The plan should be developed and tested for traveling above ground as well as traveling underground.
To be prepared and ready for a major crisis you must make up two bug out bag kits. The first one to be carried in your brief or back pack that would get you safely home and or out of the city. The second one that would be kept at home and would have more detailed information on all routes out of the city to a place of safety.
Each Bug Out Bag should contain at least the following items.
Maps, schematic of underground conduits, and directions for the trip that include above and underground travel with alternate routes. (Note – the maps and schematics in your bug out kit at home would contain maps of the entire city as opposed to simple routes to get home. Depending on where you are located in the city, you may need an extensive library of maps, hence the reason for storing them at home instead of trying to keep them all with you.)
Compass for finding the heading.
A spare watch to tell time with, preferably a wind up watch that does not rely on any type of integrated circuit.
Paper, pens, and pencils to write with.
Energy bars, dried trail mix, candy bars and bottled water to drink.
A good utility pocket knife or a survival sheath knife.
A coil of para cord about 50 feet long.
Small compact flashlight with extra batteries.
Fire starting kits to start fires when needed.
There are two basic ways to travel in a time of social unrest. The first way would be above ground in daylight or darkness. The second way is underground in daylight or darkness.
There are two main types of city street layouts. The grid and the organic layouts.
In the US, the grid system was widely used in most major cities and suburbs until the late 1960s. The grid layouts like New York City are pretty easy to navigate because all roads are built in one or two directions. In the grid layout, streets run at right angles of each other.
There are two basic ways of naming these roads. Normally avenues run north and south and streets run east and west. One of the main advantages of a grid layout was it allowed the rapid subdivision and auction of a large parcel of land.
The organic road layouts occur when roads are built as the city needs them rather than with a long term structured plan. An organic city is one that grows over time from old designs focused around things that were relevant at the time.
This might include an original settlement, a resource, important community landmark, or something else. In some cities current roadways follow historical roads that trace long forgotten land borders or old traveling trails.
Seven Ways To Find Your Way in a City
Satellite Dishes
Look for satellite dishes on buildings or towers. Satellite dishes work by pointing the dish towards a geostationary satellite that stays over the same point. Because of this, most dishes in the city will be pointing in the same direction.
Compare many dishes that are pointing in the same direction and this will give you the best idea of the true direction the dishes are pointing to. Compare the satellite dish direction to compass readings in order to determine what direction they are pointing in and how that relates to the North. At night, you can also compare dish directions to constellations with known orientations in relation to the Earth.
Religious Buildings
In the larger older cities most churches were built to face east and can be used to get a rough estimate of which direction you are pointing. Sometimes this is not very accurate, but it can get you started until you find a better way in which to use as a navigation aid.
Christian churches are normally aligned east to west with the main alter at the eastern end to face the sunrise. In addition, many church grave yards have their gravestones aligned east to west.
To find the direction from a mosque, go inside and look for the prayer niche in one of the walls which indicates the direction for prayers. If the mosque is west of Mecca, then this niche will be pointing east. If the Mosque is east of Mecca, then the niche is pointing west.
Synagogues normally place the Torah Ark at the eastern end of the building. It is positioned this way so worshipers face Jerusalem. Synagogues in countries east of Israel will place the Torah Ark in the western end of the building to face Jerusalem.
Weathering
The prevailing winds carry rain and pollutants. These two substances then hit the building leaving patterns of discolorations on the buildings. If the wind comes from one direction more than the others, say the southwest, this leaves asymmetrical weathering patterns on buildings similar to the erosion observed in nature.
Look up at the higher floors to see the natural stone or the weathered bricks. Notice how the building corners all show different weathering patterns. The contrast between the southwest and the northeast corners would be the greatest. With a little practice the shifts in colors where the rain and pollutants have left their mark can be read on all sides of the buildings.
Flow of Pedestrians
If you are trying to get from one point to another study the flow of pedestrian traffic. By following a crowd in the late afternoon, it will take you towards a station or other transportation hub. In the morning walk against the flow of the crowd to locate these stations. At lunchtime on a nice sunny day, the crowds move from office buildings towards the open areas of parks.
Very few people realize when they are lost in a large city that roads do not spring up randomly. They grow to carry traffic. The bulk of the traffic is either heading into or out of the city. The biggest roads tend to be aligned in a particular way depending if you are in the center or the outskirts of the city.
In the north or south of a city the major roads will tend to be aligned north or south. In the northwest or southeast of a city there will be a bias towards northwest or southeast. This is why road maps of big cities show a radial pattern.
Flow of Rivers in the City
Know the direction a river flows through your city. Does it flow north, south, east, or west? Is the flow from higher ground to lower ground? Do these rivers flow to the sea or to other rivers?
After you find the answers, it makes it easier to decide if leaving the city by water is a feasible plan. If it is not then you must adjust your plans and use other means.
Direction of Bridges
Know which direction bridges go. Before a time of crisis your travel plans must be completed and you must decide if the use of bridges would help you to leave the city or would they put you at risk. In the early part of a crisis before road blocks are set up, they may be useful. After the road blocks are in place it could be almost impossible to get safely across them due to riots or others that will block your path.
The Use of Clouds Blowing Across the Sky
To keep from getting lost in a city, you need to develop a good sense of direction. You must orientate yourself to the city. To do this is to use some of the clues above. Then note the direction the clouds are moving. The wind pushing the clouds will remain fairly constant, providing there are no dramatic weather changes.
This technique works when on subway trips in a new part of the city. Simply look up before entering the subway and remember the direction the clouds were blowing. When you leave the subway in a strange part of the city look up again and you will be able to work out which way is which from the clouds over head.
One of the nice things about traveling in a city is that at every intersection there are elevated road signs on poles to show the average person the name of the road, The block number, and the direction of the road is going. An example of this is: 105 A ST. West.
This address is in the 100 block of A Street West building number 5. In most big cities when there is a long street that has been separated into East and West. There is a boundary crossroad that is the neutral. All street addresses that are East of this road will have the East locator added to the address. The same is true with the West portion of the street.
In a time before a crisis it is to your advantage to know how to travel around a city both on the surface and underground without the aid of a GPS or a smart phone. During a crisis the odds are all electronic navigation systems will be down or be greatly reduced to the general public.
Using the older navigation methods will be the only way to travel around a new part of the city. If you have done your homework and practiced the odds are very good that you will each your destination safely.

Seven-odd years ago, a young black politician from Chicago stood up before a crowd of people and promised to bring “fundamental change” to America. Nobody was sure what he meant by that, but it sounded good to a lot of people.
Many climbed on his bandwagon of “hope and change” and rode it to take him to the White House, even though they knew almost nothing about the candidate they were voting for.
Four years later, the only real change that had happened was the total takeover of the medical industry and medical insurance industry, through a massively complex law called Obamacare. But that politician managed to get re-elected, telling the people that the job wasn’t done yet.
During that second campaign, he made a telling statement to another global leader, telling him, “After my election I have more flexibility.” Little did we understand the importance of those seven words. While they seemed to be focused on international relations, looking from the clarity of hindsight, it seems that they dealt more with his domestic agenda, than anything else.
Obama’s Attack against America
Since those elections in 2012, we’ve seen a ramped-up attack on American culture. Vladimir Putin has publicly stated that he thinks Obama and the Democrat Party are trying to destroy the country’s economy. But that’s not the only attack that Obama has made against America. Here are a few more:
Allowing terrorists to come into the country, without opposition.
Leaving the borders open, so that thousands of Mexican and Central American gang members and cartel members can come in.
Fostering hatred against the police, the government’s symbol of authority.
Militarizing the various departments of the federal government.
Creating massive regulations which are killing business.
Dumping huge amounts of money into the economy to bolster Wall Street by creating massive inflation.
Hiding true inflation and unemployment behind a smoke screen of fake numbers.
Importing tens of thousands of Muslim immigrants, without proper background checks.
Ignoring the domestic terrorism being fostered by Muslims, calling it “workplace violence.”
Stripping the military of its upper leadership.
Reducing the military’s overall manpower.
Extending government reach into every area of our lives.
Pushing the PC message and limiting our Freedom of Speech.
Re-defining “Freedom of Religion” to mean only in private.
Attacking Christianity directly, by using the courts to attack Christians who don’t support his radical liberal agenda.
Re-defining “terrorist” to mean conservatives, Christians and anyone who doesn’t support the progressive liberal agenda.
Removing terrorist organizations from the terrorist watch list.
Forcing the LGBT agenda on the nation.
Forcing Christians to support abortion, against their faith.
Pushing Islamic indoctrination in the schools through Common Core curriculum.
Building a massive militarized Department of Homeland Security, ready to force martial law on the people.
I could go on and on, but I’d better stop there, before I get any madder.
This one man, who may very well not even be an American, has brought about a lot of change. Granted, he had a lot of help, but the Democrat Party, government functionaries and the liberal mainstream media have followed him blindly. Even the Republican controlled Congress has followed him, allowing him to get away with murder.
So, where is this all taking us?
First of all, I’ll have to say that he’s accomplished what he promised, a fundamental change of America. The country we live in now looks nothing like the country we lived in ten years ago. Oh, the streets and buildings are the same, but the culture has enormous differences.
We didn’t have Muslims setting up no-go zones in the United States ten years ago, nor did we have a government which was punishing Christian-owned businesses for not supporting gay weddings. But we do now.
When Obama lost control of Congress, he said “I’ve got a pen and a phone.” Well, it’s clear that he’s made good use of them. In fact, he’s accomplished more with his pen and phone, than he ever did with his Democrat controlled Congress. Unfortunately, what he’s accomplished may have done irreparable damage to the country.
Trump is campaigning for president, borrowing Ronald Regan’s motto of “Make America Great Again;” but can he? Ted Cruz has promised to repeal Obamacare, starting by repealing every executive order Obama’s written about Obamacare; but can he? Other Republican candidates are rallying against one area of Obama’s changes or another; but can any of them truly turn around what Obama has done to this country?
I’m not slighting these politicians or their intentions in the least. But there’s more to bringing about change than passing laws. Many of Obama’s initiatives have taken root on a grass roots level, making them all but impossible to remove. I’ll guarantee you that getting him out of office won’t get rid of the Black Lives Matter movement and all the hatred going with it, which he helped create.
Nor will getting a Republican president in office do much to eliminate Obamacare. That’s gone on long enough now, that dismantling it will be a major problem. Just stopping it will mean that thousands or perhaps millions of people who are now receiving Medicaid will lose their coverage.
Not only that, but everyone who has an insurance policy under Obamacare will lose it too. We won’t be back to where we were pre-Obamacare, we’ll be much worse off.
Historically, liberalism has pushed the envelope of what is acceptable in society, forever trying to get new things accepted; whether good or bad. Conservatives push back, but it’s a losing battle.
What was considered liberal 20 years ago is considered conservative today. That’s because the liberals keep gaining ground and the conservatives can’t take it back. Even when they try, they only manage to take a portion of it back.
In the last few years, we’ve seen such massive gains by the progressive liberals that I seriously doubt there is any way of gaining the ground back, short of killing off all the liberals. While the liberals accuse all us conservative gun owners of being murderers, we know that’s not true. So, it’s doubtful that the liberals will be killed off anytime soon.
Any Republican president, whether RINO or true conservative, is going to be fighting against the entrenched liberal bureaucracy and the entrenched liberal media. They will be villainized at every turn, intentionally misunderstood and presented to the public in the worst possible light. Overcoming this will be nearly impossible.
Even if the next president were to succeed in overcoming the entrenched bureaucracy and media, the liberals have gained so much ground in the last few years, that the best we can hope for is retaking a small amount of the ground that’s been lost.
There are other forces at work as well, forces that believe in a one-world socialist government. You can be sure that they will do everything in their considerable power to stop or slow any actions to turn America back towards a conservative direction. These people control massive amounts of money and will use it to further their agenda; the agenda of a one world government, ruled by them, the elite.
So, the answer is obviously not in Washington. Then where is the answer? Where is there hope?
The only way that this country can change, returning back to its roots, is through a grass-roots movement. The “silent majority” is going to have to find its voice once again and start speaking out. We’ve allowed the liberals to have the bully pulpit way too long.
It’s time for new conservative grass-roots movements to raise up and take a stand. We must remember the words of Benjamin Franklin, when he said, “We must all hang together or we will surely hang separately.” I’d like to change that a bit, because I have no intention of hanging. My version goes, “We must all stand together, and else we will surely hang separately.” It’s time to take a stand.
We must make our voice be heard. If the mainstream media won’t listen, then we must use the internet. We must buy billboards and hang signs. We must shout from the rooftops and speak to our neighbors.
We must show the truth of the progressive liberal lies and we must educate others on our country’s founding principles. Otherwise, there may not be a country for our children and grandchildren.
It’s time for conservatives to wake up. We are the backbone of this country. We are its workers. We are the ones who make things move and create wealth. We are the ones who start businesses and hire workers. If we don’t do it, it won’t get done.
We must teach our children and our youth the value of work; that the world doesn’t owe them and that “getting ahead” isn’t evil. They need to understand that they can do anything in life, but it’s going to take hard work, sweat, sacrifice and toil. Nobody is going to just hand it to them on a silver platter.
It’s time to reestablish a good work ethic. Our younger generation doesn’t understand why it’s wrong to chat on their cell phones all day long, expecting to get paid for it. They need to learn how to work; how to better themselves and how to get ahead by the sweat of their brow.
It’s time, before it becomes too late. If you and I don’t teach them, giving them something to live for that’s greater than their next welfare check, this card game is going to fold.

It does little good to spend a lot of time and money in preparing for difficult times if you don’t also plan on securing those supplies against the very threats you are preparing for. Severe social dislocations caused by war, economic problems, or widespread natural disasters are almost always accompanied by looting, theft, and increased criminal behavior—sometimes in large mobs that even police cannot control. We need to plan ahead on how to deal with those threats without resorting to violent confrontations, which should be a last resort.

For quite some time we had been trying to find an economical way to better organize our small kitchen pantry. The most difficult item to organize for us was our canned goods, so we decided to focus our efforts on finding a workable solution for that category of foods first.
Although the pantry is small, the shelves are deep, making it easy to overlook a soon-to-expire can of pumpkin, for example, that had somehow ended up way in the back where it could not be seen.

Do you remember the nuclear raid drills from grade school? Do you remember wondering how sitting there on the floor wondering how curling up like that could possibly save you from a nuclear explosion?
If so, then perhaps those feeble (but not necessarily wrong) teachings have led you to minimize or not think about facing a nuclear crisis. This has led to a situation where preppers and non-preppers alike turn a blind eye to all kinds of nuclear hazards. In fact, you may be living in the middle of a nuclear crisis right now and not even realize it because you have been lulled into a false sense of security.
Different nuclear incident types dictate taking some different paths to long term survival. While it will still be a matter of luck in terms of how close you are from an incident site, there are still some things to keep on hand for your long term survival. Be sure to include in your stockpile the 10 “must have” items that you see below!
And always remember to “nuke proof” all supplies as much as possible so that you don’t wind up having to discard them in a time of need.
Radiation Detectors
Even though our society and government structure still try to appear functional, the fact of the matter is nuclear radiation and contamination are far more prevalent than most people suspect.
Make the following detectors part of your bug out kit, and learn as much as possible about the levels of radiation you and your family are already being exposed to. Here are four detector types that you should have on hand:
1. Geiger Counter and Related Devices
Most Geiger counters will measure gamma rays and x-rays, but not alpha and beta particles. There are many different styles of Geiger counters. This includes ones with dials as well as tiny devices that can fit on a keychain, or Geiger counters that attach to a smart phone or computer, and then use the device screen to deliver readings.
When purchasing a Geiger counter, you may want to try the smaller, cheaper, electronics based ones for daily use or for getting acquainted with nuclear radiation readings. When it comes to a Geiger counter that will work during an EMP, look for older designs that don’t necessarily rely on modern electronic parts.
2. Kearny Fallout Meter (KFMs)
This is actually one of the cheapest and most reliable meters that you can keep on hand to detect nuclear radiation as a matter of daily living as well as during a crisis. KFMs can be made from items as simple as aluminum foil, a baby food jar, some wax, and a desiccant.
This device relies on static electricity to keep aluminum foil leaves apart within a sealed jar. If x-rays or Gamma rays pass through the jar, they will cause the pieces of foil to get closer together. KFMs are ideal for windowsills facing power plants as well as in any other direction where you suspect sporadic or even constant amounts of radiation may be coming in from.
As you gain experience with making these meters, you can also try to fit them into watch casings or other small footprint chambers that will make them easier to carry and use as you travel from one place to another.
3. Dosimeter
These devices are usually much smaller than Geiger counters. One part is usually worn, while another part is composed of a wand that samples the surrounding air. While dosimeters are very lightweight and easy to use, they can easily be destroyed by an EMP blast.
In addition, the badge part may only be useful for one year, thus they will need constant replacing. But they are highly accurate and you can use them while you are building and finding ways to test KFMs.
4. Rad Stickers or Badges
These badges are designed to be worn and will only be useful for about a year. As with the dosimeters, they are very easy to read and carry around, much easier to conceal than KFMs or Geiger counters.
They are also especially useful if you want to make sure that your KFM readings are accurate. If you suspect a radiation cover-up in your local community, streaming pictures of this one badge can easily be the best way to get the information out to the public.
Cellular Radiation Shields
Contrary to popular belief, there are vitamins, supplements and various food additives that can protect your cells from some forms of radiation. While some of this information remains controversial, you will find a good bit of new information in the area of cancer research. Today, many oncologists are recommending the use of certain vitamins in conjunction with radiation therapy to help limit the amount of damage to surrounding healthy cells, and even though these “shields” may not offer 100% protection, it is better than nothing.
Potassium Iodide Tablets
Potassium Iodide tablets are very important to keep on hand, as these tablets are suitable for your age and weight. Purchasing or obtaining them is not as simple as you might think.
Both children and adults can easily be poisoned by the wrong dosage amounts, so you should not take these tablets unless it is absolutely necessary as they can do long term damage to the thyroid.
If you are serious about preventing radiation damage to the thyroid, then you are better off using iodized salt or Himalayan salt. The iodine in these salts will quickly be taken in by your thyroid and also protect it from a range of toxic chemicals including bromine and fluoride.
Since these toxins are far more prevalent in the food and environment these days, you will actually be well served by increasing iodine intake to the recommended daily allowance levels. Do not exceed this level as you can also do more harm than good with excess iodine intake.
Antioxidant Shielding – The Controversy
Not so long ago, doctors and researchers emphatically claimed that Vitamin C in large doses actually shielded malignant cells from radiation and chemotherapy, while others found that certain vitamins actually shield healthy cells from radiation, and therefore reduce its impact and side effects on the body.
At the current time, the NIH has gathered a number of these studies together and arrived at the conclusion that some vitamins are beneficial during radiation treatment because they can help shield healthy cells. While they do not specifically address staving off radiation sickness, it is still possible these vitamins may be of use during a nuclear crisis. You would need to start taking suitable doses as soon as possible during or after the event to get the most benefit.
Vitamins E
Some researchers have found that Vitamin E successfully protects from radiation delivered to the pelvic area. When combined with Pentoxil (a drug used to treat peripheral artery disease), Vitamin E can actually reverse some of the damage caused by radiation.
Pentoxil is from the same family of chemicals as caffeine; however there are no studies available to indicate whether caffeine can help protect from radiation damage. In fact, it is often said that caffeine will actually do more harm than good if you have been exposed to radiation.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C reduces radiation sickness in people receiving pelvic radiation treatments. It is also well established that people in Japan that survived the Fukushima incident fared much better when they took larger doses of Vitamin C. In fact, workers that tried to avert further disaster in Fukushima that received high doses of Vitamin C before going into the radioactive area had lower incidences of DNA damage and blood related disorders. By contrast, those that received Vitamin C after being exposed to the radiation did not have as much protection from the radiation.
Probiotics
Probiotics are “good bacteria” that live in your intestines, and are responsible for helping your body absorb water and nutrients. They also help fight off bad bacteria that can do serious damage to the lining of your intestines, and trigger the kinds of inflammatory immune responses commonly found in rheumatoid arthritis and other disorders.
Today, probiotics are becoming more important to doctors, researchers, and patients because they can help manage everything from rheumatoid arthritis to diabetes and a whole host of immune related disorders. It stands to reason that when you are exposed to radiation, the good bacteria in your intestines may also be killed off.
Some doctors today recommend using probiotics to help manage diarrhea and other digestive complaints caused by radiation treatment. Therefore, these supplements may also be of some help in the days, weeks, and months after radiation exposure.
For survival needs, choose the broadest range probiotics on the market. Remember that even if you start taking them now, you will still need to replace good bacteria after being exposed to nuclear contamination.
Since radiation effects can show up months after the initial exposure, you should keep enough probiotics on hand to last for at least one year. It will also be of help to consume foods such as live culture yogurt, ginger beer, miso, kefir, and sauerkraut as they all have natural probiotics in them. Ginger is one of the best herbal remedies for nausea and may help with one of the earliest and most distressing signs of radiation poisoning.
Other Natural, Herbal and Vitamin Based Cellular Shields
In general, radiation does damage to the cells by triggering oxidation (think of rusting in metal) processes that prevent the cell from carrying out normal functions. On the other side of the equation, antioxidants bind to the exact free radicals that radiation uses to cause damage to the cells.
If you use antioxidants, it is well known that they can interfere with radiation therapies for cancer. While this may be a bad thing if you are trying to get rid of malignant cells using radiation and certain chemotherapy agents, it may just turn out to be a good thing if you are trying to protect healthy cells from the nuclear radiation and fallout.
When it comes to choosing the best antioxidants, there is no such thing as one herb or vitamin that will cover the entire body. Nevertheless, some herbs that are known to inhibit radiation damage include:
Milk Thistle
Green Tea
Ginseng
Calendula
Brewer’s Yeast
Aloe Vera – it can also be taken internally for digestive issues. While it may not prevent radiation damage, it may still help with radiation sickness.
DMSO (Dimethysulfoxide) – this sulfur bearing molecule is relatively new on the market and was found useful in Fukushima. It can be obtained naturally by consuming garlic, broccoli, onion, eggs, and meat, but any food that is high in sulfur content is also likely to have some DMSO in it.
Some antioxidants work in some tissues while they may not be absorbed by other tissues at all. In addition, you may need “adjuvants” or additional herbs and vitamins to get the antioxidant into the targeted cells.
For example, it is well known that turmeric alone will not necessarily prevent tumor formation. Instead, it needs to be combined with crushed black pepper and olive oil to be successfully absorbed into the body.
It is very important to do as much research as you can on the best antioxidants so that you can create a viable cell shield. Even if you use these methods, there is still no substitute for staying away from, or getting as far away as you can from the source of the radiation. When choosing antioxidants for shielding purposes, follow these questions to help you find the best ones:
Is the herb or vitamin recommended for use during radiation therapy? If so, what body parts is it supposed to reduce symptoms in?
Is the herb or mineral listed as one that may interfere with radiation therapy? If so, does the herb or vitamin also absorb readily into healthy cells, and does it also shield them from toxic radiation effects? If it does not; are there secondary vitamins that will increase absorption. For example, some research indicates that smokers who consume large quantities of Vitamin A are more inclined to develop lung cancer. A vitamin that increases antioxidant uptake in healthy cells may be an ideal radiation shield.
What are the overall side effects of the herb or vitamin?
Can the herb be readily grown in a crisis situation?
How is the herb refined and what is the best way to get benefit from it?
What other therapies does the herb interfere with? Are you on these medications, and if so, what alternatives might enable you to take radiation shielding herbs and vitamins?
Evaluate the source of the herb, vitamin, or food source. While many sites say that sea vegetables can help reduce radiation uptake, never forget that the oceans are full of leaking barrels of radioactive waste. There are other alternatives that you can grow on your own and thus avoid heavy metal and nuclear contamination commonly found in the oceans. Needless to say, as the cost and complexity associated with marine aquariums goes down, you can also try growing sea vegetables in home based tanks and then store excess extracts away for later use.
As always, talk to your doctor and ask about herbal remedies. If the doctor doesn’t recommend them, ask point blank how much this person actually knows about the treatments in question. Bring in data from the NIH and scientific journals to see if the doctor has read them or is familiar with them. Never be afraid to demand answers and be sure that they are rational ones. If you cannot get a viable answer based on reason and modern research, seek help from a licensed herbal specialist or a medical practitioner that specializes in holistic healing. This includes ones that specialize in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines since many herbs used in these cultures have been successfully used to treat or prevent cancer; and may have the exact anti-oxidant affects you are looking for.
Clothing and Other Garments
As you may be aware, there are four basic kinds of radiation that you will need to be wary of when trying to survive a nuclear crisis. Alpha and Beta radiation are both easily stopped by your garments.
If you are traveling in an area with known nuclear materials, it is very important to keep your body covered as much as possible. Ideally, you should also wear white, light colors, or foil since they will help you stay cooler and will also help repel intense heat from an actual nuclear blast.
X-ray (and Possibly Gamma Ray) Blockers
It is a well-known fact that X-rays have a difficult time penetrating bone. Nevertheless, bone marrow can still be damaged by X-rays and also Gamma rays, so making something of an “exoskeleton” from bone may be of some use.
As anyone that has taken a mammogram knows, X-rays can also be partially blocked by certain perfumes, baby powder, and deodorants, so you may want to saturate white bed sheets and other covering materials with these chemicals. Even if it doesn’t create a perfect shield against these radiations, it may just put the odds in your favor when combined with other shields.
Breathing Masks and Respirators
Even though your skin and clothes will block Alpha and Beta particles, they can still be inhaled and swallowed right along with dust and debris from a nuclear incident. These energy particles can do enormous amounts of damage to your mouth, lung tissue, and other organs, so it is extremely important to keep your nose and mouth covered during and after a nuclear blast.
If you have nothing else, even a paper towel doused in perfume or slathered in deodorant could block out most of the radiation. Just make sure that the perfume or deodorant are on the outer layer of the mask so that you breathe as little of them in as well. Ideally, you should have a full face respirator with enough tank oxygen to last at least 48 hours.
Water Purifiers
No matter whether you are just a few minutes past a nuclear incident, preparing to leave your first shelter, or several months into a survival scenario, you will need water that is free of nuclear contamination.
As with heavy metals, you cannot simply boil water and hope to get rid of the radioactive debris, but with the exception of Tritium, distilling the water will get rid of most contamination. There are some filtration materials that can trap nuclear particles as water passes through them, and they include:
Boron – it should be noted that boron is also used to help remove radiation from milk and other foods.
Overall, the best place to store food during a nuclear crisis will be underground in a lead lined bunker. Unfortunately, as water carrying radioactive debris seeps into the Earth, it will contaminate everything in its path, and even several feet of dirt over your head will be of little use if there is a leak in the roof.
Lead is about the only material that can reliably stop most gamma radiation, and thus afford some protection on a long term basis. You should also keep plenty of boron on hand so that you can cleanse any and all foods before consuming them.
Air Cleaner Systems
You will most likely need reliable gas masks for several months after a nuclear crisis. If you do have an air filtration system, make sure that the filters can remove even the smallest particles. For example, you can purchase filters for your heating system that are specifically made to filter out all kinds of allergens.
Since these also offer the most particle removing power, they might be good to add to an air cleaning system. You will also need plenty of activated carbon to remove as much radiation as possible.
Some Options for Food Production
Many people are under the mistaken belief that they can go back to living a somewhat normal life as soon as news comes that the worst of the radiation is gone. While you may be not be exposed to as much radiation, it may not be truly safe to grow food let alone hunt game or fish in these areas.
If your homestead was affected by the nuclear fallout, try growing conifers and mushrooms that are known to absorb radiation from the soil. From there, you can pull up the mushrooms and dispose of them in an underground storage location.
Just remember that it can take decades before the soil is suitable for growing crops, and during that time, radioactive debris from other locations can easily contaminate the area all over again. Continue treating the soil and use radiation detecting devices to monitor progress.
Chances are, you will need to grow food underground using hydroponics. If you do not have a lead lined cave or dwelling, then be sure to grow mushrooms overhead so that you can get rid of radioactive contamination as quickly as possible.
You may also want to try and line ceilings and walls with boron so that radiation will be absorbed by it before reaching the interior. Always keep a few KFM devices on hand and active so that you can detect the presence of gamma rays as soon as possible.
Soaps and Cleaners
You are best served by using the simplest soaps possible. Lye soap is a good choice because it doesn’t contain any oils or other additives that would prevent nuclear contaminated debris from being washed away.
Once you are done washing, you can always follow up with oils and conditioners as long as you are certain that the surrounding environment is relatively free of radiation. Dispose of all contaminated clothes and other materials as far away as possible from your homestead.
At the current time, there are no viable ways to simply take a radioactive atom and break it down to ones that will not emit dangerous radiation. On the other hand, you won’t have months, let alone thousands of years to wait for these atoms to break down on their own.
Therefore, you will need to store away medicines, clothes, foods, cleaners, and meters that will help you detect the presence of radiation so that you can reduce its effects as much as possible. At the very least, even if you are exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, you will stand a better chance of reducing illness and being able to go about meeting other survival needs.
