Will We See ISIS Attacks Like the One In France on U.S. Soil?

By now everyone is probably aware of the terrorists attacks that were carried out in Paris France on Friday the 13th that resulted in over 120 people dead and many more wounded – ISIS has claimed full responsibility for the attacks.

Aside from the tragic reality of innocent lives lost, France is now in lock-down and under what is essentially a state of martial law after the attacks. Unfortunately, closing the borders after the event is not going to change what has already happened and will have little effect at preventing any future attacks, because the country has already been...

Prep Blog Review: Health Tips To Remember When SHTF

prep blog reviewThere’s nothing really more valuable than one’s health. Because without it, you can’t do much. And prepping becomes more of a wish than a reality, if you lack the strength to do it.

So whatever your survival plan might be, keep in mind to make health a part of it. And here are 5 tips that will steer you in the right direction.

1. Dakin’s Solution – A Homemade Antiseptic

homemade antiseptic“Dakin’s solution is an antiseptic solution developed during World War I to treat infected wounds. It is a viable solution that is being used even today and it’s a perfect homemade antiseptic for preppers and survivalists.

Dakin’s solution is an antiseptic solution containing sodium hypochlorite (common household bleach) and water. Dakin’s solution is not the only antiseptic available, and on the market you can find stronger germicidal solutions, like the ones containing carbolic acid (phenol) or iodine.”

2. 25 Natural Remedies For Diabetes

natural remedies“A few weeks ago I read an email from a reader that made me sad.  In it, she said that given her daughter’s reliance on insulin, she had come to terms with the fact that in a true SHTF scenario, her daughter would die.

Those of you that have read William Forstchen’s book, One Second After may recall that the main character’s daughter was a diabetic and died because of a lack of insulin.”

3. When The Meds Run Out, These Are The Natural Alternatives That Could Save Your Life

natural remedies“One of the perks of Ready Nutrition is to read books on prepping and natural living and share which ones I like with all of you.

Like many of you, I have a natural curiosity about natural medicine and practiced using essential oils and herbs to make my own salves and teas. I am by no means a master herbalist but love learning about the subject.”

4. Worms Can Be A Serious Medical Problem After TEOTWAWKI

worms“When I was a child, I remember my mother always worrying and watching to see if we had worms.  Now this is something that I haven’t thought about in years. But recently I have noticed a couple of articles about people having tapeworms.  Now to most younger Americans, worms are not something that they have ever had to worry about.

In talking to a few people, I find that they know very little about how to prevent or treat worms.  You can contact worms from simple things like walking barefoot in areas where people defecated. Then you touch your feet and your mouth.”

5. Homemade Decongestant Chest Rub – Compare To Vicks®

chest rub“I never even thought of making my own decongestant homemade chest rub.

In fact, I had completely forgotten that there even was a product like that.Until I needed it.

Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

In this case, yes.  And though I didn’t really invent this, I finally cobbled together information from the internet and made my own.”

How to Make a Seed Starter Out of a Medicine Cabinet

Today we present another article in our non-fiction writing contest – By Juleigh

medicine cabMirrored flush-mounted bathroom medicine cabinets are easily one of the most non-upcycled objects out there. They are short and shallow. They don’t stand by themselves. And, frankly, they aren’t very nice to look at once they are out of their recessed wall enclosure.

But, the thing is, just about every house has one…sometimes two or more. You can pick them up for a song at garage sales, rebuilding centers or CraigsList. Sometimes they are free at all these places, because very few people actually want...

Product Review: The New Power Whisperer

Power WhispererThe Power Whisperer, Type M is an upgraded version of the popular Power Whisperer emergency power system. Manufactured in the USA, in South Carolina, this is a mobile power system designed and built by Americans, with the prepper in mind.

This stealthy power supply provides power for a family when the lights go out; whether due to a storm or an EMP. Since it isn’t powered by a gasoline engine, there is no noise to alert the neighbors that you have power, while they are sitting in the dark.

Typical power generators are noisy, letting everyone around know that you have electrical power. They also require quite a bit of fuel, which can be hard to come by.

In the aftermath of an EMP or attack on the electrical grid, the noise that they make could be catastrophic, inviting attack from those who didn’t bother preparing for the emergency. As a silent system, the PowerWhispered won’t give you and your family away.

Power WhispererThe system consists of a high capacity, 100 amp hour, deep cycle lead-acid battery. The battery is charged by a 100 watt, second generation, flexible solar panel, which is stored in a compartment in the unit. 45 foot leads are provided for the solar panels, allowing you to put them on the roof or some hidden area, without giving away the presence of your PowerWhisperer.

A 2,000 watt voltage inverter provides sufficient power to run any home appliance or power tool. You can also use the 12 volt output for powering devices that are designed for plugging in to a car’s power system, such as for recharging a phone or other portable electronics.

Speaking of car’s power system, they’ve included a car charger for recharging your PowerWhisperer’s battery, when the sun goes down or on a stormy day. While solar is great to have, it only works while the sun is up. If you’re running the vehicle’s engine anyway, this gives you an option to recharge, at a rate of 5 amps.

A power station, enclosed inside the unit, provide breakers and connections for drawing power from the unit, as well as the unit’s controls. This is one of the areas that have been heavily upgraded, with a more sophisticated, user-friendly controller.

The new controller has a LCD display, giving you full information on battery voltage, charging amps, amp hours and much more important information. The 200 amp breaker is marine grade, providing sealing from the elements and ensuring that the unit won’t be damaged if it rains.

Connection for the solar panels is provided in the storage compartment. You can also attach additional solar panels for faster regeneration of the system.

The entire unit is housed in a rugged, 1/16 inch thick aluminum case, mounted on two large 10″ wheels, for easy transport, just like a hand truck. The aluminum keeps it lightweight, while the all-metal case makes it a perfect Faraday Cage.

All the components of the unit are protected from EMP, whether caused by a nuclear blast or solar activity. The PowerWhisperer can be used for bugging in or if you are bugging out to a prepared Power Whispererbug-out retreat, it can be brought along. Removable transport handles make it easy to carry, and can be removed for storage once you have reached your destination.

The housing is actually split into separate compartments for the power cell, storage and system management. It turns out there is no commercial grade hardware available for securing a 66.5 pound battery.

The designers solved this problem by putting the battery in its own compartment. A woodland pattern camouflage net is provided for help in concealing the unit from neighbors while in use.

The unit comes complete with an EMP protected compartment for storing the solar panels, that is also big enough for storage of radios and other small electronic devices, keeping them with the power supply, while protecting them from EMP. Made in the USA, you can be sure about the quality of this unit.

The Type-M is fully upgradable. The solar panel the unit comes with can be upgraded with the addition of a second 100 watt solar panel. There is also room to accomodate a second power cell, increasing storage capacity. You can even use the PowerWhisperer together with a wind turbine, integrating your power systems perfectly.

All in all, the upgrades to the PowerWhisperer have taken an already great unit and made it even better. Each one alone may not seem like much to brag about, but taken together, they make the overall unit easier to work with, more capable and more prepared to meet your needs when that next emergency comes along… even if it’s an EMP.

5 Fatal Mistakes To Avoid When Bugging In

Bugging inThere is no question that the decision to live off the grid will present many challenges, as will bugging out to a survival group or other safe location. Interestingly enough, it can also be very hazardous to stay at home during and after a major crisis or upheaval.

Ultimately, there are five, relatively simple but often overlooked things you should try to avoid at all cost. While it may take a bit of work to ensure you do not fall into these traps, it can save you time, money, and well-being in the long run.

1. Lack of Awareness about Your Surroundings

If you have been actively prepping, then you are always thinking about ways to improve your situational awareness. As with so many other things in life, sometimes it is very hard to distinguish between routine background elements of your life that won’t matter in a crisis situation, and those that will.

Some areas where you may be blindsided include:

  • Overall suitability of the land and building where you will be bugging in
  • An accurate and thorough assessment of risk of exposure to rioters
  • An accurate and thorough assessment of how government and first responders will respond to the crisis and post crisis period
  • How your personal advantages and limitations will change over time
  • Lack of knowing how zoning laws and other regulations will either prevent you from making viable prepping plans or even prevent you from doing what is needed after a crisis occurs

Today, many people that are working on their survival plans figure that if the situation is bad enough, local, state, and federal governments won’t be around or able to enforce the kinds of regulations that make it difficult to store and operate necessary survival equipment.

These very same people are unaware that we are living in a world with a global government that can and will send troops, and other forms of “support” to governing bodies that can no longer control or manage any given situation.

2. Believing You Will Always Be Safer in Your Own Home

floodNo matter what happens in life, chances are you will just want to be in your own home where you can get something to eat, go to bed, or take a shower.

Your home isn’t just a place where you carry out the daily tasks associated with taking care of yourself, it is your ultimate safe haven. In fact, even when people are very sick and need extensive care in a hospital, they always tend to feel safer at home and want to return as soon as possible.

On the other hand, there can be any number of situations where being at home can pose more of a risk than being somewhere else. In a post crisis world, it is anyone’s guess which option will be better for you.

Even in a flood, earthquake, or hurricane scenario, the house next to you may be demolished while yours remains relatively unscathed. Never simply avoid looking at the fact that your home may be too dangerous to stay in before, during, and after a crisis period.

Here are just a few things that should alert you to the fact that you may have some problems if you choose to bug in:

  • The floors, walls, or roof are in disrepair. Chances are, you would be amazed at how many people have enormous credit card, mortgage, and car payment loads even as their home is propped up on jacks or they need 5 gallon buckets to catch leaks from the roof when it rains. A home that is in this condition may seem like “home” to you, and impossible to leave, however it can spell death for you in a crisis scenario. While you may feel “at peace” with that kind of ending, you may find yourself thinking and feeling differently when you or a loved one are pinned under a beam and screaming for hours or days for help that may not arrive.
  • Your debt profile and how it impacts where you live. There is no question that many people quagmired in debt would not necessarily mind an upheaval that essentially causes all debts to be excused. Waiting for such an event and thinking that you can survive in your current home is about as rational as believing drinking poisoned Kool-Aide will get you to the promised land courtesy of Hale Bopp. Make sure that you understand how your debt and income profiles affect your ability to bring your home up to suitable standards or how your finances prevent you from getting into a safer apartment or neighborhood. If you need to let go of other prepping activities in favor of focusing on these matters (and resolving them), then do not hesitate to do so. You can always go back to more conventional elements of prepping once you have secured a safer home for bugging in. That being said, while you are tending financial matters, you can still be amassing information and fine tuning your plans so that you know what to buy, where to get it, and how to use it.

3. Insufficient Training and Knowledge Development

Just because you start each day off with a shower and a decent breakfast, it does not mean that you know enough to survive a major crisis scenario staying at home. In fact, many of the habits you take for granted may prove fatal in certain conditions. Consider a situation where you are decided to bug in during a hurricane or other massive flooding.

Chances are, if you live in a city or town, then you will also be relying on municipal water or other local water supplies that may have been contaminated by sewer system overruns. As strange as it may seem, when people hear a “boil water” advisory for cooking, they will still hop in the shower and assume that the water is clean enough to wash their bodies with!

Not only will you run the risk of exposing yourself to raw sewage and all kinds of dangerous chemicals, but you may also wind up being exposed to any number of deadly diseases.

This is just one example of insufficient training and knowledge development in areas where you may feel confident of your skills. Other things that people bugging in may overlook as they make their plans are:

  • How bathing and other hygiene protocols will change in a survival scenario. Even being a frequent camper and outdoor activity person cannot truly prepare you for days on end where you will need to conserve water and must use bath wipes and other resources to keep your skin and teeth in reasonably good condition.
  • Changes in cooking and food preparation routines. If you are the type that stores up and stocks up on frozen foods or pre-packaged meals, everything will be lost when there is no power to run refrigerators and freezers. To add insult to injury, if your cooking skills don’t go much beyond the coffee maker and the microwave, you will find it very hard to safely manage a propane stove or an open fire. Needless to say, if you decided on bugging in so that you could avoid “outdoorsy” scenarios, then you may find yourself at a distinct disadvantage even though you are in your own home.
  • Changes in how you manage medical conditions and needs. Even though you can buy a virtual pharmacy of useful herbal remedies, the vast majority of people don’t know how to choose good quality products let alone use them to their best advantage. To make matters even worse, there tends to be a distinct lack of interest in topics such as bystander CPR, general and advanced first aid, and emerging trends in medical technologies. While you may have no interest in being a doctor or other type of medical provider, that does not mean you should avoid learning how to splint a broken bone or stop excessive bleeding. It is also very important to keep up with new learning in the field of medicine. Many things that were thought to be true about various conditions are being disproven. As a case in point, do some research on leaky gut syndrome and find out about all the conditions it can lead to. If you are suffering with any of these conditions, you can put yourself at an advantage by looking for alternatives that will restore your well-being instead of hoping that your medicine stockpile will get you through a crisis situation.
  • The words “situation awareness” often bring dark alleys, gun shots, and martial arts smooth moves to mind. Sadly, the more active your imagination may be on this matter, the less prepared you will actually be to defend yourself or escape during a house invasion or riot. No matter how calm and cool you think you will be in a situation, rest assured that adrenalin alone will have you shaking as every thought flees from your mind, and your punches and kicks seem to be moving through some weird goo and miss their target. If you have never been in a real street fight or had to pull a knife/gun or use it on an attacker, then you truly don’t know what is involved let alone how to defend yourself and your home from multiple attackers. Never assume that being in your own home will mean you are safe regardless of the condition of society.
  • Dedicating the term “situation awareness” to self-defense alone. This particular term can be applied to just about any area of life. Invariably, the more you know about what is going on around you and within yourself, the more you will discover needs to be done.
  • Lack of structuring your home’s internal landscape. Regardless of the neighborhood or how nice you want your home to look, there are some disastrous orientations of furniture that will make it very easy for attackers to get in and take over your home. Make sure that you know how to use fields of fire and how to direct invaders to locations where you can deal with them more easily. Do not assume that this is sufficient. If you have a gun, practice hitting targets in these areas with the laser sights, throw knives, shoot soft darts, and practice with rubber arrows. The more muscle memory you have and the more confidence you have in the fields of fire within your home, the better chance you will have of defending it and yourself.
  • An accurate understanding of human behavior and intentions. In crisis scenarios, it is all too easy to become paranoid and lose all sense of how people can work together to overcome a crisis. Always make sure that you know when to defend yourself with words or how to shift a situation to your advantage. Simply “shooting and asking questions later” can easily leave you as a target for gangs and just about anyone else that sees you as a threat. This in turn, can make it difficult, if not impossible to get out of the situation alive, especially as others begin working together and rebuilding the area.

4. Lack of an Exit Plan

emergency exitThere are many situations where you may decide that you would simply rather die in your home than face all that goes with trying to bug out. As many people in 9/11, hurricane and tsunami zones have learned, you don’t always have a choice about whether or not you will survive the actual crisis event.

No matter whether you stepped away from your home at a critical moment or some other event leaves you as a survivor, you may well find out that you are alive and relatively well, but can no longer live in your home.

Lack of an exit plan from this type of situation can prove worse than fatal. Never forget that others around you that may have passed on or been badly injured would give anything to have what you have now.

Do not waste the good fortune that you have if you survive a major crisis by not developing a viable exit plan just in case you cannot bug in. Some basic things that your plan should include are:

  • The names and locations of friends or relatives in near and distant locations that can give you a place to stay in time of need. Often, the hardest part of bugging out is the fear that you will have no place to go. At the very least, if you have a person or location in mind, then you can focus on that goal and use it as a means to get started moving out of the crisis zone.
  • A bug out bag that has the tools required for navigation, food gathering, food preparation, water purification, and basic medical supplies. If you are traveling to an area with a different climate, then be sure to wear layers of clothes that will enable you to avoid common pitfalls. This may include clothes that will help you stave off frostbite as well as ones that will help prevent heat stroke and dehydration.
  • The financial means to support yourself once you are outside of the crisis zone. If you are in a fairly localized situation, it may still be possible to gain access to debit cards and other bank funds. To maximize your chances of getting at these funds, make sure that you have at least one pre-paid debit card that is backed by a bank large enough to have branches all over the world. As may be expected, cash or coins are always the best option if you don’t want to be tracked, however then you will still need to be able to defend yourself from various thieves and other criminals.
  • A list of skills and knowledge that you need to acquire. Make it your business to learn how to hunt, fish, build a shelter, purify water, tend basic medical needs, navigate, and defend yourself. You should also make it a point to learn at least one extended trade that you can use for barter as you move from one area to another. Even if you wind up remaining in your local area, these skills will still help you as you interact with others trying to overcome the same nightmare scenario.

5. Not Having a Bug in Bag

As you read the term “bug in bag” you may find yourself wondering why you would want to pack a set of essential gear when you have your whole home to survive in.

Basically, any given scenario may make certain rooms inaccessible or other problems may limit you to a very limited space. At the same time, if you need to leave, you can cut several hours off your time by having a bag with everything you need for long term survival.

Your bug in bag can be limited to essential tools that you will need to obtain water and purify it as well as tools for obtaining and preparing food. In some cases, you can follow guidelines for a bug out bag, however bear in mind that limited traveling distances and your neighborhood features may make some things useless unless you are going to bug out.

For example, a classic bug out bag might include fishing gear. If you are living in an inner city, chances are you won’t be going fishing let alone catch anything that is safe to eat.

On the other hand, you might find it more practical to have a paper list of all food pantries or other food preparation locations where you can get something to eat, plus seeds and suitable containers. While this won’t provide food immediately, eventually you will be able to feed yourself at home.

Over the years, many preppers that have studied a wide range of scenarios conclude that it will be easier, cheaper, and safer to bug in. Sadly, these same people may be lulled into making some fatal mistakes simply because they are planning to remain in known territory where they feel safe. A crisis situation can turn even your home into a nightmarish, strange, and dangerous landscape.

Take the time now to make sure you avoid these mistakes and you will have a better chance of thriving on your bug in plans.

Learn To Fix It – Tips for Keeping Things Running Now and After The Collapse

by Karen L

Being able to repair things is a useful skill to have – believe me, when you’ve knocked your iron off the ironing board repeatedly, it’s awful handy to know how to fix it. Tackling simple mechanical objects like an iron or (my recently fixed) Foodsaver vacuum machine can be intimidating, but with certain exceptions, you can do it.

First off, find out everything you can about your non-functioning device. Find the manual (you did keep the manual, yes? Got it at a garage sale? Time to Google!), check the manufacturer’s website, check sites that have manuals for sale if...

The Best Way To Stockpile Vegetables Off-Grid

Canning veggie off gridThough many of you may be considering using solar panels or other sources of energy when you go off-grid so that you may have refrigeration and electric, that’s not going to be the norm if SHTF. For most of us, we’re not going to have refrigeration or a freezer to preserve our foods. For that reason, I think that it’s important to discuss ways to stockpile vegetables off-grid.

Stockpiling Store-bought Veggies

This is, of course, the easiest way to stockpile most vegetables but it does cost more in the long run that growing and preserving your own vegetables.

Though methods such as canning may have a hefty cost up front, you’re going to be able to re-use the jars so each season, your cost per jar just keeps going down. However, if you don’t have space to grow a garden, stockpiling store-bought canned foods is the best way for you to prepare.

Canning Your Vegetables

canningWe’ve discussed canning vegetables in several other posts but there’s a reason for that: it’s effective as a means of storage and, when canned properly, vegetables will last for a decade or longer. I think that it bears repeating that you need to do this safely. Again, we’re assuming in this article that there is no power source.

That means that canning over an open fire (or in an enclosed fire pit) is going to be your only option. The single most important part of canning your vegetables this way is that you ensure that the water remains boiling the entire time.

This is because one of the primary reasons that you must boil your jars of vegetables for a set amount of time is to kill the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulism causes damage to your central nervous system and can quite realistically be fatal.

Vegetables that have a low acidity, which encompasses just about every vegetable except tomatoes (yes, I realize that tomatoes are technically a fruit), must be boiled at temperatures higher than most boiling water baths reach.

You need to use a pressure canner for most vegetables and all meats in order to kill the spores that cause botulism. Doing that over an open fire is certainly possible but you’re going to need a tremendous amount of fuel to do it. You can read more about that here.

Of course, if you’re operating with solar panels or other sources of off-grid power that enables you to cook inside, fuel won’t be an issue.

If you notice that your jar isn’t sealed, has bubbles inside before you open it, has foam on top when you do open it, or is under a lot of pressure when you open it (food may blow out), don’t eat it. These are all signs that the food is contaminated with the botulinum bacteria.

Dehydrating

dehydratingDehydrating is a wonderful way to preserve vegetables. It preserves most of the nutrients in the foods and also makes them lightweight and reduces the size by at least half.

It’s also simple to do even if you don’t have a dehydrator. For example, if you string peppers, green beans or peas (to name a few) on a string and hang them in the sunlight, they will dry perfectly well just like that over the course of several days or a couple of weeks.

All of you have likely heard of sun-dried tomatoes. The best way to dry your tomatoes in the sun is to cut them into quarter-inch strips or wedges and lightly salt them. Just set them out in the sun and let them dry out, turning occasionally to hasten the process. Onions could probably be dried like this too, but I’ve never tried it. If you have, tell us about it in the comments section.

The thing to remember about dehydrating is that it doesn’t preserve your food long-term. It simply preserves them a bit longer because it removes most of the water content. Since there’s still water in them, they’ll spoil eventually.

Many people counter this by canning the vegetables after dehydrating them. The main reason for doing this instead of just canning them is that you can get much more dehydrated food into a jar than you can hydrated foods.

Smoke Your Veggies

Yes, you can smoke vegetables for long term storage, though you should probably can them afterwards just as you would dehydrated foods. You’ve probably heard of smoking meat; you’ve undoubtedly even eaten it!

The same process applies to vegetables. Cut the veggies in strips and put them in your smoker. Smoke them until they’re dried just as you would if you were dehydrating them. There are now indoor smokers but that would require electricity. Of course, if you want to get a head start, you could smoke them inside now and preserve them for later!

One of the biggest advantages to smoking your vegetables is that it adds tremendous flavor that adds a wonderful layer to soups, stews and other dishes that you may make.

Since seasonings may be at a premium if SHTF, this added flavor will be an advantage. There’s nothing that boosts morale more than well-flavored foods and smoking infuses such a unique taste that fond memories of barbeques and parties are sure to follow.

Herbs

drying herbsHerbs are best dried or fresh. The good thing about most herbs is that you can grow them in pots even indoors and can just pinch some off as you need them. Most continue to grow and replenish and even if they don’t, herbs tend to grow quickly and are usable practically from the time that they sprout.

To dry your herbs, all you have to do is hang the plant upside down in the sun and let them wither and dry. It’s easy and will preserve your herbs for months. The secret here is to make sure that they are completely dry.

You’ll know that they’ve reached that point when the leaves crumble when you roll them between your fingers. If you don’t get them completely dry, they’ll mold and then all of your hard work will be wasted.

There are many different ways for you preserve your vegetables off grid. Experiment with each and see which one you like best. It’s probably a good idea to become proficient in each method now so that it won’t be a challenge for you if something does come to pass that causes you to live off grid.

Just be sure to do it properly because mold or bacteria can make you extremely ill and can even kill you. Become proficient now!

If you have any more suggestions for preserving vegetables off grid, lease share your knowledge with us in the comments section below.

Social Conservatism Is Not Dead

ConervatorismIf you listen to the liberal politicians controlling Washington or the liberals in the mainstream media, social conservatism is dead. Those of us who consider ourselves to be conservatives are nothing more than relics of the past and modern society has moved on, leaving us in their dust.

But that’s not quite true.

Oh, I’m sure it looks true to them. They surround themselves with other progressive liberals, who all say believe the same things and chant the same mantras.

They cover their ears and shout microagression to any contrary opinion. They complain about anything that might offend them and they tell themselves how they are the elite and are so much smarter than the rest of us. But it’s all a sham.

Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, Southern California and a few other hotbeds of liberal utopia are almost like enclaves, where progressive liberals can surround themselves with other like-minded leftists and tell themselves that they represent the consensus opinion of the United States.

But that’s nothing more than a dream in their minds. According to the latest Gallup poll, conservatives still make up 47% of the United States, moderates are 30% and liberals come in last at only 23%. So how does the liberal minority make themselves out to be the majority? Because they are the most vocal part of our society.

When conservatives don’t like something, they generally just say they don’t like it and then go on with their business. When liberals don’t like something, they scream that society has to change it.

They’ll keep screaming it, like a child throwing a temper tantrum, until society does what they want. It doesn’t matter if what they want is right, wrong or indifferent, their opinion reigns supreme… at least in their mind.

Are The Media and Minorities Controlling Our Future?

That’s how the LGBT community, which represents no more than 2 whole percent of our population, has managed to become the tail wagging the dog. We now have this small percentage of people dictating law and the various branches and departments of the government obeying them.

All they had to do was mouth the magic words “racist” and “discriminatory” and they got the rest of the progressive liberal minority chanting their mantras too; making such a din that Washington couldn’t hear anything else. The Muslim community is doing that as well. And Obama is working overtime for them, importing Muslims as fast as his pen can write. He may get his wish, although not as quickly as he’d like.

But all this doesn’t change the fact that the largest chunk of society is still conservative. At 47% it seems that conservatives should be able to control the country, but we rarely are.

All too often, we capitulate to the liberals, not just in Washington, but in voting booths across the land. When the GOP leadership puts forth a RINO candidate, as they are known to do, conservatives don’t vote, handing the victory to the liberals on a silver platter.

That’s what happened in the last two presidential elections. Obama won those elections because the GOP leadership couldn’t back a candidate that reflected the values of their supporters. Or perhaps what they did was put forth a candidate that reflected the value of their financial supporters, rather than the voters.

Either way, the candidates who represented the Republican Party didn’t garner the support of the electorate and Obama won. Republican moderate candidates, otherwise known as RINOs, can’t win.

The Republican Party’s Comeback

But an amazing thing has been happening at all other levels. If we look at the 2012, 2014 and 2015 elections, we see an amazing shift towards the Republican Party in State Legislatures, Governorships and the U.S. Congress. All three times, Republican candidates have won seats, in many cases sweeping away entrenched Democrats.

This happened again here in the 2015 elections. While actually a rather minor election, there were a few important seats up for grabs. Perhaps the most important wins were the Governors of Kentucky and Ohio, both swing states. Kentucky has had Democrat governors for 40 of the last 44 years, but now turned to a Republican candidate to replace the incumbent.

Matt Bevin won the Kentucky race for Governor, based upon his strong conservative stand. Pundits had declared his demise for his support of Kim Davis, the County Clerk who refused to issue marriage license with her name on them. But it was this very support that caused conservatives to get out and vote, supporting Bevin and winning the election.

There’s a false idea that social liberalism is an electoral winner. That’s what’s driving the GOP leadership to back RINO candidates. But the last three elections have proven this wrong. In all three cases, the electorate has gone for strong conservative candidates; not RINOs, not moderates and not liberals. Liberals have been losing seats across the country, at every level, because the silent majority of conservatives is fed up and is finally making their voice be heard.

We’ll never hear from conservatives in the manner we hear from liberals. Conservatives will either change something, fix it or put up with it; they won’t really complain about it. But that’s the beauty of the voting booth. That’s where conservatives can really make their voice heard, and do it in a manner that makes a difference.

With the 2016 Presidential Primaries approaching and the 2016 General Election on the horizon, conservatives have a chance to do what the liberals did when they voted Obama into office the first time, giving his party control of both houses of Congress as well. The question is, will the Republican Party put forth a solid conservative candidate that we can get behind or will the GOP leadership, helped by the mainstream media, succeed in putting another moderate on the ballot, who conservatives can’t get behind?

Those governorships weren’t the only place where the liberals lost out in the November 3rd election. Houston’s liberal, lesbian mayor and city council tried to pass a law creating special privileges for those who are confused about their sexual identity. Specifically, allowing men in women’s bathrooms and women in men’s bathrooms. That resolution was defeated 2 to 1.

But conservatives in Houston wouldn’t stand for that. They raised the signatures necessary to force that to be included on the ballot, rather than voted on by the City Council. When the mayor tried to claim that the signatures were fraudulent, they took her to court on it, ultimately winning in the state’s Supreme Court. That put the resolution on the ballot, where it was defeated.

In fact, we find that in just about every major social issue today, conservative viewpoints are winning out over liberal ones in nationwide polls. So, while the progressive left is touting themselves as representing the people, the polls are telling us otherwise. It is actually the strongly conservative candidates who are truly representing the viewpoint of the majority of the people.

This is important and we need to make our voices heard on our stance. Since we can’t count on the mainstream media (a bunch of liberals) giving fair airtime to our conservative viewpoint, we must find other ways.

Alternative media, especially through the internet is one of those. Conservative talk show hosts, such as Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin and Glenn Beck do a great job, but that’s not enough. The voices of the average person need to be heard too. Houston showed us the way on this. The resolution wasn’t passed with the help of politicians or the media, but rather by a grass roots movement of conservatives who stood up and said, “Enough!” When we do that, we win.

In the last presidential election, Romney stated that 47% of the people were going to vote for Obama, simply because they were receiving government handouts and the Democrats where constantly telling them that Republicans wanted to take those away from them.

But let me put that in perspective. That 47% is matched by the 47% of the population which is conservative. We match them, vote for vote. They can only win, when we let them.

It’s time for conservatives to stop giving elections to the liberals. If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, nobody else is going to do it for us. That means voting in candidates who stand for our values, not some wishy-washy candidate who is going to back Wall Street, more than Main Street, or stand with Democrats, rather than with our values.

Former CEO of IBM, Lou Gerstner is famous for saying, “People only do what you inspect, not what you expect.” We have got to remember that our elected representatives are our employees, not our masters. So, we need to inspect what they do and let them know that we are doing so.

Yes, I know that it’s not in our nature to complain, but we have to. Actually, we don’t need to complain, we need to tell them how we expect them to vote and then check to see that they vote that way. It wouldn’t hurt to tell them that we see what they did, on those occasions when they don’t do what we say.

Then, and only then, can we be sure that we will receive fair representation in Washington and our state’s capitals.

5 Bad-ass Perimeter Defense Lessons From A Vietnam Vet

DefenseThank God you made it to your rural bug out location (BOL)! You almost didn’t get out in time before the Police State Metropolis you lived in had their National Guard soldiers shut down all further mass exodus from the quarantined city, with shoot to kill Iraqi War style road blocks on the last exits that weren’t already blocked by panicked mobs and burning piled up car crashes.

You get out of your bug out vehicle (BOV) and kneel down for a moment on the cool green forest ground in a soon to get very hot world, and give solemn thanks that you were granted the presence of mind and discipline to have your BOV ready to rock at a moment’s notice.

You will miss a few of the friends and neighbors you know you’ll never see again, and you’ll feel sorry for those who were trapped in their normalcy bias comfort zone and ignored the ominous but clear warnings. You will pray for them the first chance you get but right now you have another serious problem.

Beware of “Zombiez”!

You pulled ahead of the general Mad Max road rage on the Interstate and traffic finally thinned out considerably as you branched out to the county highways.

You started passing more and more stalled out of gas vehicles off the side of the road, now looted out, and deceased looking, with shot out windows and bullet holes in the doors. You noticed small groups of stragglers marching off the shoulder of the roads carrying their military grade weapons and back packs with grim desperate looks on their faces.

These were the ones who never cared about prepping. They had a different kind of survival plan. They were out ambushing, murdering, looting, and ravaging those who didn’t prepare their vehicles well for escape.

A couple of them raised their weapons to draw a bead on your vehicle as you floored it and screamed passed at over 90 miles an hour but they never had a chance for a good shot. You then had that sickening, kicked-in-the-gut feeling as you realized it was going to get really ugly, really fast.

You hoped your secluded location would minimize marauding this “zombie” contact and that you would have enough time to make last minute adjustments, and finishing touches to your dedicated compound perimeter security before you hunkered down and sweated out the inevitable anarchy looming on the distant horizon…

Reality Check!

DSC02320

“Okay, I’m ready to work on the perimeter!”

Although different catastrophic/emergency and disaster events require different strategies and appropriate levels of preparation, they all share a single concept.

Security. Security, defense, and personal safety measures also span different levels of preparation effort and expense.

There is a lot of info out there now on urban home invasions and spontaneous concentrated urban rioting and looting, and how to protect and fortify your house from a break in.

This is a good idea in any case even before an apocalyptic scenario, and the harder and more time consuming you make it for a predator to attack and invade your city home or apartment the better the odds they’ll get caught at the door by police. Or give you time to escape at another egress or ‘gun-up’ in defensive counter attack mode behind some concealment/cover and take them out ambush style as they break in.

But in a doomsday scenario such as a major power grid collapse, sudden universal economic collapse, or super bad disease outbreak, there won’t BE any Police response, at least not for you. Fortifying your home’s doors and windows and stocking up on a few weeks’ worth of extra food and water won’t help you that much in the long run.

The first myth is that you can survive in place relatively easy if you read certain books. That might work through a hurricane, super blizzard, or local power outage that traps people for many days, but not in an all pervasive major social and economic, and resource breakdown that would last months and even years. This is an entirely different prep than surviving in place strategies. Do not make the mistake of not realizing the difference.

In the worst case SHTF event, you must be as isolated as you can from congested metropolitan areas if you want any chance for safety and survival. Period. Because sooner or later desperate and extremely psycho dangerous “zombies” will target your urban dwelling place and get through your home fortifications one way or another, and kill you, or burn you out.

Almost any house can be breached and broken into by determined attackers given enough time if there’s no worry about police showing up on the scene and the occupant/defender’s name is anything other than Rambo. And I don’t mean days, but more like only a few siege hours.

Even brick houses with bars or steel break in shades like you see on business storefronts in high risk areas. And if you somehow manage to kill them before they get in the first time, there will just be another group, even scarier, right after that in most large urban environments. That’s the reality.

Bug Out and Live!

The best way to initially survive a worst case scenario is to NOT to be around anything for very long that can kill you. Then remaining low profile if not completely secluded off the predator radar and out of targeting sight. Because why would anybody of sound mind, except in certain unfortunate personal circumstances, want to stay in a burning high rise hoping the sprinkler system will work when they could take the emergency exit out immediately?

So bugging out should be your primary plan. And the only place to go is out in the rural areas where contact with others is as limited as possible along with minimal profile footprint concealment. Once you’ve attained that, then the next part is making sure the “zombies” can’t just easily take it all away from you if they do stumble upon your hideout.

If you chose a decent BOL, some professionals with experience in this think it’s easier and more advantageous to your safety and security to make a virtually impenetrable perimeter barrier around your dwelling than it would be to seriously fortify a house/apartment in the city or town.

The factual truth is that these types of bad human relations as violent social conflicts have been going on since Biblical times and always contain certain elements. It always boils down to attackers and defenders. Fortified compounds, camps or castles, and superior firepower and tactics which change the advantage and even the whole game.

5 Lessons to Learn from Vietnam About Perimeter Defense

The art of this type of social warfare evolved to a stagnation point during the Middle Ages and then became obsolete during the evolution of the military industrial complex and modern world warfare that included airpower and massive tank warfare. It was not revisited and perfected until the mid-20th century, in a small country police action in a faraway country called Viet Nam.

Ironically, as I draw from personal empirical knowledge and on the job experience and historic record on the comparisons and similarities, the best paradigm for survival perimeter combat preparedness comes from the Vietnam war, both when the French and the Americans were fighting it.

The lessons learned and strategies and tactics ultimately deployed became so refined and successful they remained in military application even to the modern Afghanistan war, and American mountain base camps and varies only due to advanced technology in weaponry and early anti-intrusion detection.

The Viet Nam conflict draws parallels similar to apocalyptic anarchy because political perspective notwithstanding, the typical American defenders hunkered down in camp compounds and defended against mainly ground forces who won‘t have air or naval power or sophisticated precision electronic detection or aiming technology.

The Viet Nam ground war was relatively primitive terms of force multipliers and its success, or lack of it, depended mostly upon small unit engagement with relatively basic weaponry.

Amazingly, today this type of fortification can be replicated on a smaller civilian but equally effective outcome on the private BOL compound today, and in a couple tactical applications, even better! Obviously the scale of enhanced force would be somehow different but the essential principles of applied dynamics and what works best are the same.

Here’s how to get started in the simplest, least expensive way.

  1. Local Threat Evaluation

A combination of the likelihood of indigenous harmful contact and the random plain view discovery level of your BOL determine the odds of you getting approached by marauding “zombs”.

If they can’t see you from any road, there simply is not that much of a chance of many roaming predators getting into your area, because most of the area is inhabited by good people, more exposed than you but pretty self-reliant and well-armed, and they would pro-actively interfere with any groups of predators before they would ever get to your neck of the woods. So the likelihood of your BOL getting hit is very low.

Setting up a protective live defense perimeter barrier would virtually guarantee your long term survival of the rare one time attack if that happens, because almost any well prepared and armed prepper will have enough firepower, ammo and resources on hand to handle that. That is opposed to a long duration regular siege and total destruction type environment that would be common in anarchy ruled urban environments.

  1. Barrier Protection

What does the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall, 13th century castle walls and other heavy barriers have in common? Walls are the most difficult obstacles to penetrate or breach by humans without heavy destructive equipment, but they also are the most expensive.

If your intruder simply can’t move forward and gain access to you in your inner protective shelter without getting stopped one way or another by formidable outside barrier, then your perimeter security succeeded and you survived. That’s why it’s better to have an outside perimeter circle of defense rather than allow them to get too close to your main retreat.

Again, the Vietnam War proved beyond doubt that you don’t need a castle or great solid wall to get the job done. There are other, even better ways…

  1. Perimeter Alarms

Aka anti-intrusion alerts and early warning devices. In Nam, we used anything and everything for perimeter alert from our empty beer and soda cans filled with pebbles, to the latest state of the art (at the time) forward terrain radar units and seismic ground sensors spread out even beyond the perimeter along with trip flares, and booby trapped grenades, and of course a healthy amount of pre-positioned Claymore mines if some of the attackers somehow get too far into the perimeter kill zone.

IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING you can easily replicate most of that with modern electronic battery operated noise alerts either with PIR detection triggers or pull pin type trip wire activation along with careful use of pyrotechnics, or both. There are pros and cons with each, mostly depending upon if you have a lot of animals especially deer in your area.

Pyrotechnics are a very good tried and true method of alert and can be enhanced to perform double duty as a shock deterrent ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. The old saying is that there are only two types of pyromaniac powder monkeys: those who are already missing some fingers or eyeballs, and those that are getting ready to.

The other thing is the potential forest fire hazards if you live in a dry area especially if you are using the trip flares, instead of a flash bang alert.

There’s also the legality factor. Most states have strict laws on the amount of powder you can legally shoot off in a non-commercial/professional display personal firework. I believe the max is an ounce of retort/bang powder that you can shoot off or purchase without a commercial license. But check it for yourself before trying anything else!

skyrocket

Plus, if the DNR is snooping around your land and you made an oversized flash bang on a trip wire that damaged his eardrums that will become cause for arrest.

I know there is advice out there on how to booby-trap your doorways but I seriously don’t recommend doing that with anything that can kill or maim (stick with loud siren alerts or flashing lights only) because not only is it illegal virtually everywhere, but it will be only a matter of time before you yourself or someone you care about trips the booby-trap.

And I strongly recommend that you don’t get into that with common store bought fireworks, which could easily blind or burn an innocent victim or start your house on fire.

On a perimeter defense, the common larger over the counter fireworks like the bursting skyrockets and rapid fire mortar tube clusters pre-loaded shooting and bursting shells could be used just to wake up the group of invaders.

The burst charges are not black powder loaded, but contain the silver flash powder which provides a potentially dangerous hyperbaric close concussive effect even in only a cardboard tube with the legal maximum amount of powder.

Again, these are legal to own, but you can’t shoot them at people without getting into trouble. Just like guns.

But in an all-out lawless society where nothing will be adjudicated anymore in any system but God’s court after you’re dead, these are formidable perimeter counter attack devices because they also can be enhanced for maximum damage and launched on demand electronically from a secure rear position or even tripped by wire.

So it wouldn’t hurt to stock up on these because they’re legal and fun on the 4th, and would definitely come in handy on a doomsday “holiday” as well, both as an alert and force deterrent out to a hundred meters or so. Like shooting mini-RPGs and a mini grenade launcher barrage on egress/entry routes backed up by hidden wireless security cameras, which now can reach distances out to five hundred meters or better.

But if you are just getting started, stick with the pull pin or PIR battery security sound alert/alarm devices.

pinned battery

You’ll immediately get why I caution you on this after your nephew or YOU forgot about it while out squirrel hunting, trip it yourself creating embarrassing Hershey Squirts in your under drawers, and your children or grandchildren will laugh at you mercilessly.

You absolutely need a lot of training and experience before you start playing with things that go bang. After you think you are safely proficient with the mind set of perimeter security devices, you can graduate yourself and augment to the trip wire re-loadable retort devices like the 12 ga. shotgun shell blaster.

DSC02311

These are on the internet for about $40. They can take a shotgun shell right out of the box but these don’t work well because it is designed to be used with a barrel.

By itself it just pop bursts not even loudly below the shot/slug, and doesn’t even become any shrapnel because the powder is a slow burning type and it just splits the sides. Waste of good ammo. But you can get louder blank shells and commercial screaming flares and loud bangers from specialty ammo vendors on line. Pricey but very effective alert and deterrent effect.

There are also other good and even cheaper percussive devices that use only .22 caliber blanks, shotgun primers, or the nail gun blanks which also work decently on a lesser scale.

  1. Perimeter Intrusion Obstructions

Of course a high chain link or barbed wire fence always helps slow down people you don’t want coming in on your property, but these are easy to breach if you are a good climber or have a pair of wire cutters.

You can make it look like a FEMA prison camp and it will feel like one also, but it won’t do much good against anything but animals maybe, unless you electrify it, and I don’t mean horse/cattle fence. I mean you’ll need sizzling frying high amp prison fence to stop “zombs” using only a fence. Not to mention it will be pretty obvious to passers-by unless you camo paint it or something.

The next best thing is pyramids of concertina type barbed/razor wire rolls. Harder to breach without having heavier tarps or plywood which “zombs” certainly won’t have in their back packs. Easy to set up.

Or, you can do it cheaper and less labor intensive with something that worked so well in the Nam that we almost felt sorry for the enemy who tried to get through it because it always was like the proverbial shooting of fish in a barrel. We called it snag wire and/or tangle foot and as their moniker imply, once ensnared, they were almost impossible to get untangled from.

barbed wire

And all it amounted to was regular barbed wire rolled out on the ground in crisscross or lattice pattern on the ground at intersects less than an average human step, and propped up with stakes at various heights from ankle to knee level.

Enhanced by anything imaginable from punji spikes to tripwire grenades to napalm bombs along the way. Not to mention backed up by the secondary defensive firepower towers, and bunkers armed with heavy machine guns and LAW rockets and inner perimeter mortars.

Tangle foot would be comparatively easy and less expensive to set up in conjunction with the ’creative’ use of ‘passive’ natural terrain obstruction like tree limbs and boulders and heavy brush on your perimeter. You’d only need about an eight foot width across the part of the perimeter you were setting it up at.

DSC02308

DSC02309

DSC02312

DSC02313

Look closely at the seemingly natural and innocent looking forest pictures to the untrained eyes. In the pictures of downed trees and branches which were intentionally created as an egress obstruction.

You can’t walk or climb over that without falling, tripping, and twisting yourself to injury and entrapment while not getting far, as it stretches for several yards straight ahead and several yards to the flanks before you can make it through but hidden in the grass are also stretches of tangle foot.

So you would naturally walk around it until you found a pathway/clearing to continue on. This turns out to be a funnel zone which essentially lures the intruders into going where you WANT them to be herded. Which is replete with trip alerts, more serious booby traps, cameras, or whatever else you like when the SHTF and you no longer casually walk around in the area because you’re now in full defense mode.

And these funnel areas–which actually control the locations of entry to your compound–then become pre-set up dedicated fields of cross fire counter attack kill zones. Where you can lay a heavy ambush backed in and covered from the entry way or snipe them as they try to get all the way through and closer if they aren’t immediately deterred and retreat away.

If you look closely at the woods picture with the path on the right side, there is also a natural passive tree barrier on both sides going outside the picture for fifty or so meters either way.

It looks like storm/weather damage caused the blockage but it’s actually a clever expedient perimeter hack by bending down horizontally and staking down smaller trees cross wise which continue to grow and can’t be penetrated except by chopping through. The path is normally used for egress but can be tightly sewn up and protected fairly quickly.

  1. Defensive Counter Attack Booby Traps and Other Devices

Don’t waste time getting into man-trapping devices like large snares, dead falls, punji pits, etc. These are so labor intensive, time consuming, and mostly don’t work, that it’s not cost effective in this day and age. And it will be a pain in the ass pulling out dead animals all the time.

Yes, they were used in guerilla warfare but only because the Cong were so piss poor and resource impoverished that they couldn’t do anything else. And good Point man could spot them a lot easier than trip wired grenades. When they got their little rice ball hands on better explosive ordnance, they quickly forgot about these primitive sticks and stones methods.

First and foremost and probably least expensive is a passive perimeter far enough away from your main compound/shelter that’s too far for an easy pick off gunshot or throwing of firebombs, usually over fifty meters and ideally about a hundred meters, with anti-intrusion alerts and deterrents.

Then augmented by tangle foot and strategic counter attack defense zones that can be upgraded later in a bad SHTF scenario with extra more effective counter attack equipment that you can make with legal supplies you already have in your stockpile.

Obviously we only touched the subject of base camp perimeter security, and what you still need to know if this article piqued your interest would fill volumes. But if you do have a serious interest in this I’ll answer any questions you have in the comments section and/or point you in the right direction for further edification on the subject.
