Power Grid Destruction Of The Third – And Worst – Kind

By now, we all know about the potential catastrophic dangers of the high electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) from terrorists or WWIII, and likely solar flare events. Some preppers take it seriously and plan for it by taking certain measures and precautions to protect their equipment and electrical necessities.

The rest of us take a chance on the unlikelihood of terrorists getting their hands on enough sophisticated electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bombs or delivery methods.

And the fact that unless old sun actually whips the mother of all coronal mass ejections on us, no one knows for sure how bad it will be and there’s even a chance that most of the electrically civilized world will still survive, especially on the side not facing the sun.

So based on the tenuous imminence factor of the event potential, most people just go on with the preoccupation of their personal comfort zones, secure in their normalcy bias, counting on the odds being in their favor, and don’t think about it anymore.

But what if I told you there’s another guaranteed way the electrical grid will collapse, leaving us all without major power for years, while we struggle to survive the aftermath? And it has nothing to with chance, because it has already started! And when it’s finished, the currently unimaginable scenario of massive devastating power outages will become a nightmare we might never wake up from.

The Danger from the Inside

What if I told you that if you believe that the radical Islamic State enemies of the West will stop at nothing to take down America, then they wouldn’t need a complicated and not necessarily foolproof HEMP weapon of mass destruction?

What if they already had the weapon of mass electrical grid destruction right here and now in this country? And that all that had to be done is to trigger a simple electrical kill switch to implement the catastrophic collapse of our grid, and subsequently the economy and everything else as we knew it? And that this weapon is our own government?

But here’s the worst part. There’s nothing that authorities or anyone can do to prevent this from happening at this point. Not all seeing and intruding massive spying on the public by a totalitarian government. Not the pervasive institution of Police state control. Because in reality, the government is actually facilitating this attack!

Instead of beefing up and protecting the outside intrusion factor in national security, this government allows and even sanctions and encourages free and easy access by terrorists to our country by its official immigration policies and its lack of proactive physical perimeter security.

Instead of doing good old fashion police work in profiling and tracking specific activities and indicators the way all good detectives used to do, the DHS and its feckless fools are hell bent more on restricting our freedoms by massive citizen privacy intrusions and illegal spying on everybody because of their Marxist gun control and asset seizure agendas.

And they are doing this virtually ignoring basic police techniques that don’t require ubiquitous registration and surveillance of all free American citizens.

How Is This Happening and How Bad Will It Be?

Shortly after April 16^th 2014 when the incident occurred in the early am hours, a private independent outside think thank consultant/analyst I know, like many others on the standby payroll, was contacted for their opinion on a highly suspicious criminal damage act that took place in Silicon Valley California.

A power transformer substation like you see everywhere enclosed in chain link fencing was shot up with enough rifle fire to destroy it. It only took a few minutes of firing. Empty assault weapon casings were found at the scene but local police investigating found no finger prints or DNA on the empty shell cases as if they were ”sanitized” before loading in the weapons magazines.

If it was not for the good fortune that this particular substation’s power dispersion could be backed up and re-routed electronically by engineers, a good part of the valley would have been without power for as long as the entire month it took to repair the damage.

To this day, nobody has been caught and the official FBI investigation reports it as ”an act of vandalism”. The independent analyst studied the information details and sent his encrypted evaluation to the contact office. From his extensive experience in this particular venue, the conclusion was obvious to him.

It wasn’t a bunch of nitwit drunken vandals out to destroy something just for the fun of it. And it wasn’t disgruntled power company employee.

It was a textbook example of something government special operations units have been doing for decades. Commando type guerilla warfare attack on critical infrastructure designed to cripple large populated areas. This was the general consensus of all outside analysis. But then what was the purpose of the attack?

There were several questions on this that were also analyzed. If it were a government staged exercise to test the concept for whatever reason, why would they risk the lives of the people by shooting live ammo in a public location when they could have tested the outcome of such an act in a more coordinated and safety conscious environment under controlled conditions at a military or private contractor base?

Whoever did this didn’t care if a large portion of a major population area would be immediately shut down without power and cause millions in damage and disruption. It would seem as if they wanted to just see how easy it would be to do and get away with, and what the actual damage could be?

If it weren’t for a last minute rescue job by civil power company engineers to re-route power transmissions, indeed, whoever did it would be pleased with the results. But the unknown attackers still smiled to themselves.

Then, what about if it was a ”false flag” attempt that was fortunately thwarted by on the ball employees? Or was it what the majority of analysts believed? That it was the well planned work of trained terrorist cells to test the potential of their ability to damage the grid, before going ahead with the large scale timed and coordinated attack?

In any event the last and main analysis was the actual viability and real time damage results of such an exercise. When the final analysis was in, it shocked everyone involved in the investigation.

The Unspeakable Truth

When the reality check also came in on the effects of a lone wolf but well-coordinated commando attack on our grid infrastructure as far as just what it would take to cause major unprecedented collapse, the answer was lung collapsing.

It wouldn’t be merely an isolated incident that could relatively quickly be responded to and handled. This one would be much different. First of all, most grid systems cannot be re-routed like the one in Silicon Valley. If you hit the right ones, there would be no way you could repair it before a major black out and the subsequent disaster would occur. But it gets worse.

Doing this on a large scale throughout the country would potentially amount to nothing less than all out nuclear war type damage. And it would be so easy, that yes, a caveman could do it in his sleep, but even a bunch of hate crazed delusional extremist murderers, with rudimentary guerilla skills could pull it off in one quiet, nap taking lazy afternoon.

Tactically speaking, it would be an unstoppable exercise. And the cold hard reality is that there’s another factor that is horrifically mind numbing.

A Dozen Doomsday Power Stations It’s All It Takes

It only takes the destruction of a dozen or so critical power stations to literally shut down the entire country s power. This is hard to comprehend but it’s a fact.

It has to do with an obsolete, complicated, and fragile electrical grid distribution system that is even worse than our crumbling bridges and transportation systems, and the fact that every electrical power integration is linked backward to fewer power supplies.

If you take out certain critical substations then everything in the down chain also fails. It’s a domino phenomenon that eventually kills us all where less than a dozen substations can begin the process.

It wouldn’t even help to have armed guards or police posted at each critical power unit, even if they wanted to–which they don’t. As any Special Forces A team knows, the attack force has the advantage of surprise, and maneuverability, and can distract and create diversionary tactics while they calmly quickly take out the power stations.

There used to be a special Delta Force team that specialized in these type of sabotage raids to prove the defensiveness of secure government facilities, and a soldier–by the name of Marcinko–headed the training.

The terrifying conclusion was there was virtually nothing he couldn’t get into and take down unless it was surrounded by an entire infantry battalion supported some well-armed ”Guardian Angels” from God, for back up!

The government used to get so irritated at their own ineptitude that instead of being grateful to this team leader for his skill in pointing out their critical flaws, they vilified him.

And this feckless government already allowing millions of illegal immigrants from Mexico to come across the border almost at will, where intelligence estimates one out of every five is a Muslim jihadist and potential future lone wolf operative.

Texas Department of Public Safety Director, Steven McCraw, when asked recently at a news border conference if any illegals coming across the border were from a country with a well-established terrorism presence, he answered unequivocally “Yes”.

And now, the current regime is welcoming 200,000 immigrants from the premier middle East terrorist breeding grounds to join the border infiltration soiree here with absolutely no restriction, vetting, or identification.

Even the intellectually terminal government can’t outright deny that ISIS will intentionally place a few thousand of their specially trained anti-American terrorist jihadists within the refugee ranks. Why not, it’s an opportunity too good to pass up for ISIS? We welcome them in to kill us!

So I predict that the Islamo-terrorist grid plot has already hatched and the ”test run” in California was the second phase, and now they are only finishing up the last details of target determination to learn exactly which dozen or so power stations will target.

And it might be sooner than we think, with the new ”hands on” help from the latest White House protection of our country debacle, with the additional implanted foreign trained sleeper cells posing as Syrian refugees.

It’s so bad that it almost seems that there has to be some kind OCD of gun control agenda use for this flagrant breach of national security, by a government gone insane for them to even attempt such a denigration of their most primary government responsibility, the protect our borders! Because first and foremost disarming the Free American people is always their main priority.

Since these jihadists like to attach propaganda symbolism with significant times and dates in their planned attacks, I’m seeing this grid attack coming as we get closer to the election.

Especially if it looks like Trump might win the nomination, because Trump promised he’d promptly send every one of them back to where they came from. Maybe around next year’s 9/11 anniversary or maybe sooner…

So there it is. If you thought it was bad enough to upset your little paper panties with worrying about solar flares and HEMPS, this is an amazingly guaranteed easier way to kill all our electrical grid power with many of us right along with it.

But not only are the authorities incapable of doing anything about a planned coordinated guerilla attack on critical power infrastructure, they intentionally do nothing about it in terms of even making it a little more difficult to achieve!

That’s because they’re too busy wasting time and DHS effort from our tax money on spying and data collection on free law abiding citizens, so that they can eventually confiscate our firearms and then implement totalitarian control over what little we have left of our money and assets.

This coming grid attack, my fellow Patriots, is the bad boy your mommas warned you about. And it would be a very bad prepping mistake not to make long term blackouts a major priority.

Are We Prepared To Survive Solar Storms?

In the fall of 2014, we narrowly missed a major bump in the road, in the form of a solar storm. NASA had warned of its coming, getting their warning down to almost the day. This was to be the biggest solar storm to hit the Earth since the Carrington event in 1859. Fortunately for us, it missed the Earth, passing us by.

This type of storm is both unique and common. It is common in that the surface of the Sun is a constant burning explosion. Solar flares and storms happen all the time. It is rare, in that the solar superstorms which could cause us major problems don’t happen all that often; and when they do, like the one in 2014, they often miss the Earth.

Yet scientists estimate that a solar superstorm has a 95% chance of hitting the Earth once in every 250 years and a 50% chance in hitting the Earth once every 50 years. The main reason we haven’t heard much of them is that it’s only been in the last 50 years that it has mattered.

The Superstorm Versus the Grid

For all practical purposes, a solar superstorm that actually hit the Earth would have roughly the same effect on the side of the Earth that it struck as an EMP.

Therefore, we could expect massive power outages, as transformers on the grid are destroyed, as well as a loss of massive amounts of sensitive electronic equipment controlling everything from our critical infrastructure to our entertainment.

In this case, the size of the storm, it’s length of duration and how directly it faced the Earth would all have a factor in how serious the damage would be. Some storms might merely disrupt communications on a temporary basis, while a major storm might destroy most of the electronics we depend on.

Should the electrical grid substations be damaged, which is a very real possibility with a larger storm, then repairs could take over a year. How much of an impact that will have will depend on how many substations are damaged and whether the possibility of rerouting electrical power for the affected areas exists.

Unfortunately, it came out in 2014 that the government has done little to nothing to prepare for such an event or that of an EMP. While the military has some units which are protected from EMP, as well as a few government offices, there isn’t enough protection to go around for all the departments of the government, let alone civilians and industry.

There is virtually no protection for the three power grids that serve the United States. Estimates of the cost of adding that protection are over one trillion dollars, making it impractical from a financial standpoint.

Even buying and stockpiling spare transformers to deal with such an event is deemed impractical. These are custom-built transformers and they take more than a year a piece to build.

Apparently, there aren’t standard designs which are used throughout the system, but rather each one is more or less an individual. So, a spare transformer for one sub-station probably won’t work for another. Should the grid get hit, chances are, it will go down.

There is one advantage with a solar storm, when we compare it to an EMP; that’s the warning we will have. Scientists know about 12 hours before these storms strike. So, if a reasonable means of spreading the word could be developed, those 12 hours would give people time to disconnect equipment and store it in Faraday Cages before the storm hits.

Of course, that wouldn’t be as easy for businesses and industry; but measures could be developed, which would allow those businesses to prepare for the solar storm and protect their computers and other sensitive electronics.

Alas, this probably won’t happen. Developing such a system is the type of thing that was popular in the 1950s, but would be looked at with scorn today. Few would truly accept the gravity of the situation and make proper preparations. Amongst those who did, all it would take is one or two false warnings and they’d stop listening to the warnings all together.

But then, this wouldn’t do a thing to help the power grid. So, even if individuals and businesses were to invest in developing the necessary protections to keep their equipment from being damaged in the case of a solar storm, without power from the grid, that investment would be useless.

The key to everything is to have readily available electrical power that we can use. That’s going to require major investments and major changes to the grid.

So, What Does This Mean to You and I in Real Terms?

First of all, it means that it’s not a matter of if a solar storm will hit the Earth, but when. Hand-in-hand with that, is the question of how severe said storm will be, which is measured in both magnitude and duration. Both will have an effect on how much damage they can cause here on Earth.

Since we are totally unprepared for such an event, the effects of a severe solar storm could be as bad as an EMP attack. According to the report of the EMP commission, that would have the effect of killing off 90% of our population in the first year, either due to illness or due to starvation.

Without the full infrastructure in place, many thousands of people won’t receive critical medicines that they need. While some will be able to survive this, many won’t. Even those that can survive without those medications will have severe effects, some of which will be debilitating.

Then there’s the food issue. The American agricultural industry is the most productive in the whole world. But it is dependent upon the transportation industry to move product from the farm to the processing plant and from the processing plant to distributors, ultimately bringing it to the retail outlets where consumers buy it.

Without electricity to pump fuel out of underground tanks or to refine petroleum into fuel, those trucks will come to a standstill. Farmers won’t be able to get their product to market and much of what they produce will be wasted.

This is an extremely grim picture, but it is a worst-case scenario. It is possible that the solar storm would not cause this much of a problem. But we really have no way of knowing. There is too little data to go by, although the data we do have indicates that the results would be akin to an EMP attack.

This is going to sound a bit far-fetched, but I need to throw it in here. There is a possibility that such an end game scenario is not only acceptable, but desired by a fair number of Washington insiders.

The Georgia Guidestones, which have the New Age Manifesto inscribed on them, state that the population of the world must be reduced to 500 million people. Apparently, if that means killing off 90 percent of our population, that’s totally acceptable. At least, it’s acceptable to some people.

This may explain why there is so little effort on the part of our government to do anything about preparing for a solar superstorm or EMP attack. Those events would play right into the hands of the elite, providing them with the utopian world that they desire.

The only way of ensuring survival is local self-sufficiency. I add the word local in there, as small communities working together could become self-sufficient enough to survive. Other than that, self-sufficiency will be limited to family units. More than anything, they will need to be able to produce their own food on an ongoing basis, in order to ensure their survival.

Other than food production, we would be faced with our country going back technologically speaking to a time about 120 to 150 years ago. The question then would be how quickly we could adapt to that lifestyle.

Once again, those in smaller communities would have the advantage, as many already have a closer connection to their past. But in addition to that, the crowding in major urban areas makes it all but impossible to return to that sort of lifestyle.

Living as our ancestors did requires space. Some people living in suburbia might be able to do it, assuming they have a source of water and are experts at gardening. But to raise any sort of livestock for meat requires a considerable amount of ground. That means living out in the country somewhere, where you can have several acres to work with.

As with any other survival situation, the advantage goes to those who are prepared. People who are growing their own food now and working on becoming self-sufficient, will have a much easier time adapting to life after such an event. Their biggest worry will be protecting themselves and their efforts, from those who have not prepared. If they can do that, they will be able to survive.

The War Between The GOP And Mainstream Media

It’s no secret that the media is heavily leaning towards the left. Regardless of their protestations of innocence and declarations of neutrality, their words and actions say something else entirely.

When the members of a news organization donate overwhelmingly to one party (85% to 15%), it’s clear where their sympathies lie. In such a case, the ability to remain neutral in their work is all but impossible.

I’m not blaming them for their viewpoint, I’m blaming them for their hypocrisy. Nowhere is that hypocrisy more clear than in how they report about what’s happening in the nation’s politics. They play softball with any Democrat politician, while intentionally trying to make the Republicans look bad.

This has become extremely clear in the presidential debates. The first Democrat debate was a love-fest for Hillary, with Hillary and Bernie Sanders working overtime to out-promise their supporters a whole new collection of freebies. In stark contrast, the Republican debates have been filled with gotcha questions and attempts to get the candidates to turn on one another.

All this came to a head in the third Republican debate, sponsored by CNBC. Why the GOP would even let a liberal news organization host one of their debates is beyond me, but they are.

It was clear from the opening moments of the debate that the “moderators” didn’t see this as an opportunity to get the candidates to talk honestly about their opinions, vying for voters, but rather a chance to collect sound bites on the candidates, which they could use to discredit them.

Then, once the debate was over, the “fact checker” went to work. Of course, like most fact checkers working for the media, the only “data” they draw on is that which supports their political view. So, that would make anyone who denies global warming a liar and one who doesn’t believe in science, even though there is no true science to back up global warming.

It’s interesting that the same fact checkers who were so anxious to verify every word that the Republican candidates said, didn’t do any fact checking on Hillary and Bernie. I guess they felt they didn’t need to, because a Democrat politician wouldn’t say anything against the progressive liberal narrative.

The gotcha tactics didn’t work too well for the media this time. Not only did the candidates do an admirable job of avoiding the gotchas, but they turned the tables on the media, attacking them for their obvious bias.

Starting with Ted Cruz, several of the candidates blasted the media for their childish actions and ridiculous questions. It was clear to all who watched what was happening and how the liberal media was trying to turn the debate into a circus.

Republican candidates are beginning to react to this, stating that they will not participate in future debates hosted by the mainstream media. While this hasn’t gained momentum yet, it could very easily do so. Were that to happen, they could kick the mainstream media right out of the debate process.

Of course, the obvious counter on the part of the media is to refuse to broadcast the debates. While that would be tragic, I’m sure that alternate media would pick up the debates and make sure they got out to the people.

We have to realize that there are actually four main political parties in this country and not just two. Of those, only two are voted on, the others are self-appointed. Those two extras are the media and the bureaucrats. Unfortunately for conservatives, they have aligned themselves with the progressive liberal party of the Democrats, creating an uphill battle for conservatives to get anything done.

This is why liberals can say that they represent the mainstream view in the country and that conservativism belongs with the dinosaurs.

Keep in mind; that’s with polls showing that the country is 47% conservatives, 30% call themselves moderates and only 23% identify themselves as liberals. But the only ones the liberal politicians hear are the liberals who surround them. Remember what Obama said after the mid-term elections? “I’ve heard the voters, and I’ve heard those who didn’t vote too.”

Hmm, I wonder what those who didn’t vote said. Would anyone be willing to bet that they said something other than what Obama wanted to hear? No, that would be a sucker bet. What he clearly said was that he was going to ignore the voice of the voters, instead listening to the voices in his own head.

So, where does this leave us?

It’s clear that the media is stoutly against anyone who is a Republican, as well as all conservative ideas. It’s equally clear that the vast majority of the government is as well.

Oh, there are a few departments of the government who are right-leaning, like the military, the FBI and the CIA, but they are definitely in the minority. The vast sea of bureaucrats out there need for government to grow, so that their own status can grow as well. That alone aligns them with the progressive liberal camp.

Sadly, much of the GOP leadership is more strongly in the left’s camp, than they are in the right’s. They have been captured by the system and are hearing the same sorts of messages that the Democrat politicians are hearing. This has made them so disconnected from their voter base, that they no longer recognize what the people who voted them into office want.

This lack of unity in the Republican party has been disastrous in past years and it continues to be disastrous. They want a moderate candidate, like Jeb Bush, but the voters have clearly rejected him. If they continue to push, and put another moderate candidate forth as the Republican candidate in the general election, conservative voters won’t turn out and the Democrats will win.

Each election we have had in the last 20 years or more has been more critical than the last. It is clear that the progressive liberals are pushing for a one-party system, with their party as the only one standing. If that happens, then the country will surely become socialist.

We are only one Supreme Court justice away from a decidedly liberal Supreme Court. It is almost certain that the next president will appoint at least one Supreme Court Justice. Should Hillary or Bernie win, we can be sure that the new Justice will be a liberal one.

That would be a major win for the liberals, giving them the ability to go after our 1st, 2nd and 4th Amendment rights, without opposition. We could expect our guns to be confiscated, our religious freedom severely curtailed (for those of us who are Christian or Jewish) and our freedom of speech limited to whatever the PC police decide we should be able to say.

Hillary has already said that she will not only continue taking the country in the direction that Obama has been taking it, but that she’ll double down on some of his initiatives, taking them even farther. Yet she’s the media darling, the one that all the pundits are declaring should be the next king, or queen of the United States.

I have to say, it’s not looking good. The media has the power to sway any election and have done so in the past. By ignoring a politician or showing them in a bad light, they change people’s votes and they know it. Why do you think they are ignoring Ted Cruz, the most conservative candidate running?

Regardless of where you stand politically, Ted Cruz is recognized as a true conservative and one who has taken on Washington, battling against his own party, as well as the Democrats.

He went to Washington with a mandate and seems to be one of the few who has not forgotten it. Yet he is being marginalized by the media, who are spending all their air time talking about Trump’s latest outrageous statement.

So, I ask again, where are we going?

Conservative talk show host Mark Levin has prophesied that the Republican party is going to split. If it does, it will be disastrous. That would be a win for the Democrats, as neither of the new parties would be able to muster enough votes to win anything.

Many Republicans would stay with the more moderate group, because they would retain the Republican name. The true conservatives would form the new party. While they might actually outnumber the Republicans, it is doubtful they would outnumber the Republicans and Democrats both.

Since the RINOs who control the Republican party are faster to capitulate to their Democrat masters than they are to their own voters, the Democrats will win. They will have their one-party system in fact, if not in name. They will be able to win whatever they want and pass any law they choose. Such a move would truly be the end of conservativism in this country.

The Republican party needs to return to its roots. What roots? The roots of their voter base. It’s time for them to hear what we the people are saying and take heed. That’s the only way that the United States has a chance of returning back to her roots. Anything else allows those that want to make it the Socialist States of America to win.

12 Survival & Homesteading Uses For Coffee

Coffee, that dark, heady brew that gets you out of bed in the morning and keeps you going throughout the day! Though it’s most certainly delicious to drink, coffee has many different uses.

Pour yourself a cup of Joe, pull up a chair, and find out how else coffee may help around the homestead of even save your bacon someday. Oh, and don’t throw away the grounds quite yet – after you read this, you’ll understand why.

1. Compost

Coffee grounds add acidity to your compost pile and may also attract worms and repel pests. Remember that you want to keep the ratio of green matter and brown matter equal and coffee counts as green matter.

Coffee is rich in nitrogen, which your compost needs in order to cure properly. If you’re worried about not having enough phosphorus or potassium in your compost, throw some banana peels on your pile, too.

2. Fertilizer

Coffee grounds have two of the three major components of fertilizer: nitrogen and potassium. It also adds a nice magnesium boost, which your plants need to grow and thrive. Since you also need phosphorus and calcium, you’ll need to add some lime or wood ash to your mix.

3. Staying Awake

coffee bug out Sure, coffee is a great eye-opener, but it’s great to help you KEEP your eyes open, too. If you’re in a survival situation and it’s your watch, you’re not going to want to doze off on your post.

Also, if you have to travel a long distance, the extra energy will help you keep pushing on. An interesting fact for you here: certain tribes in coffee-growing countries used to wrap a coffee bean in fat to carry with them as a source of energy.

This would probably be great to do with Pemmican, too. You’d have fat, protein, carbs and energy. For that matter, coffee is a great source of antioxidants and other goodies that will help you out along the trail.

4. Headaches

One of the primary ingredients in many headache or migraine medications is caffeine. Also, if you’re used to drinking coffee on a daily basis, especially a LOT of coffee, you will likely go through withdrawals from the caffeine addiction.

The primary symptom is a headache. So, whether you’re suffering from a migraine or headache caused by something else, or from caffeine deprivation, drink a cup of coffee to get rid of it.

5. Grow Worms

If you live near water and are going to be depending on fish and a compost pile for food/gardening, worms are your friend. They need gritty substances such as coffee to aid in their digestion so a planter full of dirt and coffee grounds would be heaven for worms.

6. Barter

You know how much you love your coffee. Well, you’re not the only one, but you may be the only one who thought ahead enough to stockpile it! Coffee is going to be a great barter item if SHTF even for a little while.

7. Get Rid of Odors

Whether it’s in your refrigerator or freezer or on your hands, coffee grounds are great for getting rid of gross smells. If you’re wanting to keep your fridge or freezer smelling fresh, put a couple of cups of coffee grounds in an open container and set it inside for a couple of weeks or until you have some stored up that you’re not composting.

If the odor is on your hands after you peel onions or work with garlic, you can get rid of it by rubbing some coffee grounds in your hands like sand, then wet them a bit and keep rubbing.

8. Scrub Dishes, Pots and Pans

Coffee grounds are abrasive and if you’re out of scouring pads or are on the run but don’t have access to your standard cleaners, coffee grounds are abrasive without being scratchy and are great to use to scrub grease and grime off of your dishes. This is also just a great way to re-use the grounds and avoid using chemicals on your dishes.

9. Grow and Rescue Your Carrots

growing carrots If you rub your seeds in coffee grounds and add some grounds to your soil when you plant the seeds, you’ll be accomplishing two things at once.

First, you’ll help your carrots grow – they love coffee grounds and it will help you grow bigger, better ones.

Also, underground critters that may want to gnaw on them before you’re ready to often don’t care much for coffee so they’ll leave your carrots alone!

10. Save your plants

Sprinkling some coffee grounds around your plants will keep pests such as harmful insects away. Ants and slugs are particularly averse to coffee grounds.

Just be careful doing this around plants that prefer a more alkaline soil because when it rains, that coffee is going to filter down through your soil and when you weed, the grounds will likely get mixed in with the soil. This is great for those acid-loving plants.

11. Make Rejuvenating Soap

Would you like to really get rejuvenated during your shower or when you’re washing your face? Coffee grounds added to your homemade soap serves two purposes: they act to exfoliate dead skin cells and the caffeine in the coffee can actually be absorbed through your skin to help give you a little boost. It also helps with those bags under your eyes.

12. Boost Morale

When everything in your life seems turned upside down, a bit of normalcy goes a long way. A cup of coffee in the morning helps anchor you and boost your morale by giving you that sense of normalcy. Even the smell of it brewing will give you a comforting boost.

Storing Coffee for Long-Term Stockpiling

coffee powder There’s quite a debate about whether coffee is best stored ground or in bean form. Just like everything, it will probably taste better longer if you store beans, but are you absolutely positive that you’re going to have a way to grind them?

Also, if you have to run, you’re probably not going to be able to grind your own beans on the trail. For that reason, I’m stepping over the debate line onto the side of “ground”.

The National Coffee Association says that the commercial containers that your coffee comes in aren’t ideal for long term storage but they don’t say why.

They do say that coffee should be stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Seriously, that leads me to think that the containers that your coffee comes in would be fine for long-term storage, especially if you’re buying the vacuum-packed bricks.

Be careful with where you store your coffee; in a cabinet by the stove is definitely too warm as is a cabinet that gets direct sunlight. Your best bet would be in a pantry, basement or storage closet.

Coffee has numerous purposes besides just drinking! Throughout our history, it’s been a staple product for people who travel light. Pioneers heading west carried it and many who lived mainly off of it may have survived the trip because the water had to be boiled to make it. That killed the bacteria that was in the water along the way. Many pioneers died of cholera, which boiling water would have prevented.

Our military have always had packs of coffee in their meal packs for both energy and morale purposes. There’s just something about coffee that’s made it as American as apple pie and it deserves a cherished place in your stockpile.
