New Year Prep Blog Review

Prep BLog ReviewWe started this year with a New Year Blog Review edition that we put together for the beginner preppers.

We wanted to help them start working on their preparedness skills so that, by the end of the year, they would feel ready to face any disaster scenario.

This year we’re taking it a step further, putting together another list of articles that will help you go further with your prepping, so here’s what you might work on in 2016:

1. Disaster Communication for Preppers | Preparedness

Prep 1“Disaster communication is important for our survival. There is no way for us to know exactly when or where a disaster can strike. Advanced technologies can help us predict these occurrences but try as we might, nature seems intent on finding ways to surprise the unsuspecting population.

Just think of the tsunamis, typhoons, and earthquakes that we have witnessed in recent years. As preppers, we should always be ready for anything that could happen to our nation, our homes and our families. And we should not only be talking about natural disasters but also the unfortunate incidents caused by fellow human beings.

2. How to Make a Super Survival Shelter

Prep 2“Survival Lilly is at it again! In this video, she used her creativity, knowledge, and survival skills to make a super shelter.

She uses branches, logs, and sticks to make an octagon shaped shelter.  Pay special attention as she coaches you through this and see if you can learn anything knew about making a house.”

3. How To Be Prepared For A Power Outage

Prep 3Food

One of the first things I did was to make sure we have a 3-month supply of food in case of emergency or in case of a quarantine. We all know what happens when a disaster strikes–the food is cleared from grocery store shelves immediately. In case of a power outage, I made sure I have many shelf stable foods.

I also bought a butane stove so that I can still cook indoors. I put off buying one for several months because I thought it would be an investment, but they are actually very affordable ($20-30). We have a Barbeque, but in case it’s cold outside, I wanted something I could use indoors, and something I could use my pots and pans with.”

4. How to Get 2000 Degrees Solar Power – Great For When SHTF

Prep 4“This can purify water, instantly start a fire, melt metal, cook food and even melt concrete…..This can melt a padlock if you needed to get in somewhere too … just saying

This is made from a simple lens called a Fresnel lens… These are commonly found in old rear projection big screen TVs ….

WHAT IS A FRESNEL LENS – The basic idea behind a Fresnel lens is simple. Imagine taking a plastic magnifying glass lens and slicing it into a hundred concentric rings (like the rings of a tree). ”

5. How to Bake Without an Oven

Prep 5“Winter just does not feel like winter without an ample supply of baked goods.  My husband is a cobbler and pie lover, and I a muffin, cake, and cookie gal.  Together, we have spent many a winter eve enjoying a fresh blackberry cobbler with whipped cream, or woke to a delicious blueberry muffin.  But this winter, baking has been a bit more challenging because we do not have an oven.

Thankfully, we have learned several creative ways how to bake without an oven.

My two favorites are Dutch Ovens, and what I will call Stovetop Bakes. In this post, I share our experience with Woodstove Bakes.”

6. Four Questions to Ask to Prioritize Emergency Preparedness Goals

Prep 6“It’s a new year and that means the traditional time of making new goals for yourself. Hopefully you added a few goals to be better prepared this year. I keep an ongoing list of things I want to learn, do, and purchase for preparedness.  I call it the “Big List” and keep it in a notebook in my purse.  It keeps me working toward a goal and learning and preparing.

But sometimes looking at the “Big List” is daunting.  There is a lot on there!  And it seems like every time I cross something off the list, I add two more things.  How will I ever accomplish it all?  And for sure how will I ever purchase it all on our little income? This could be a cause of great anxiety and even bring on “preparedness panic shut-down” where you decide that rather than tackle that huge list, you’ll just put your rose colored happy glasses back on and do nothing.  Because really, there’s no way you can get it all done and it’s causing stress just thinking about it.”

7. DIY Wind-Powered Water Pump

Prep 7“This summer I made a bunch of fun things out of PVC for my visiting nieces and nephews, and this wind-powered water pump is a combination of two of those projects: a wind-powered deer deterrent, and a pump-style water gun.

This water pump is definitely in beta stage. All the components work, but the design is highly inefficient and requires considerable wind to pump water out of our pond. In the video below I act out the part of a gale to give you a visual of how the pump works. The last step in this instructable will discuss the bugs in the current design and how they can be improved for a more efficient use of wind power.”

8. Active Shooter Training | How to Survive a Gun Attack

Prep 8“I thought I would take a second and share some pretty interesting things I have found on the internet. There are from some high-powered Government Agencies that we can all use; it is open to everyone to help make aware and even hold training for Active Shooter situation. These resources cover applications from the workplace, school campus (K-12, Higher education, First Responders at Schools) , and even church.

I want to be sure to make an absolute statement that I am not taking credit for writing any of these trainings. I just put them together and deliver them so everyone they are available and they can have access to many different options and methods in regards to how to survive a gun attack.”

Read more on Gun Carrier.

9. How To Tan A Hide Using Several Methods

Prep 9“Knowing how to tan a hide is a very important skill to know, if SHTF, there will be no new sheets, no new blankets being made or imported in. It will be up to us to stay warm, this is one of the best ways to stay warm.

Hides can be used to make clothes, insulate your bed, room, windows etc. Little rabbit hides can be stitched together with squirrel hides and in no time you could have a blanket that may just save your life. Like I said, this is a great skill to know. See a few ways you can do this at home below.”

10. The Top 8 Deadly Myths About Survivalism

old cabin in the forest“Hi! I’m Sheila.

For the last several years, our family, my husband Dan, our son Jesse and I, have been living what some may call the “survivalist” lifestyle.  Actually, we live  the off-grid (so far off the grid that there is no land line and no cell phone service available), self-sufficient life.  We’re not here to get away from the world for a few days while chaos happens and calms down. We don’t think that’s what will happen, anyway.

We’re here because we have chosen to separate ourselves from the rat race, the system, and not be swept away in the tide of what we see as society running amok.  This is not a temporary lifestyle to us. It’s a wonderfully peaceful, sometimes difficult and always rewarding life. Regardless of what does or doesn’t happen, “out there”, this is how we choose to live.”

Using Seasonal Disasters to Assess Preparedness

I live in a smaller suburb of a medium sized mid-western town. We have had floods, tornadoes, and most recently, an ice storm. I am not going to spend a bunch of time here about floods and flooding. Bottom line gets out of the flood plain, have a sump pump, and have a backup battery powered sump pump.

A big tornado rampaged through the area in 2013 and woke me out of a semi-daze I had settled in since I had returned from overseas. I had seen the warlords and other corrupt officials, and how they treated ‘normal’ folk when they had no means to protect themselves or their loved ones. In...

Pros and Cons: Body Power Systems For Survivors

big backpack

When people think of long term, catastrophic power outages, EMP based crisis situations tend to be the ones that come to mind first. While an EMP can truly be devastating, earthquakes and many other events can also wipe out the grid for miles around your location.

As such, even if you have a homestead, being at the epicenter or ground zero of a crisis situation may mean that your off grid power system will fail or be rendered useless because of extensive damage.

Although the following systems may not generate huge amounts of electricity, they may offer just enough to power medical devices, radios, smart phones, computers, or any other small devices that can help you get through the initial crisis period.

No system is perfect, nor will it work in every situation that you find yourself in.

This article does not cover bicycles or other larger devices that may be used to generate power, but is dedicated solely to small devices that can fit into a backpack, or can be carried around with relative ease.

Solar Generating Backpacks

VoltaicBasically, a solar generating backpack is just like a regular backpack in the sense that you can pack books, food, or just about anything else in it.

The solar generating backpacks also have a rechargeable battery (usually in the bottom), and a solar panel on the outside of the pack.

Depending on the model that you choose, some may only be able to power cell phones and other relatively low power devices while others can power tablets and medical devices that have a similar power usage range.

A solar generating backpack works just like a regular solar panel in the sense that the panels need to be exposed to sunlight in order to generate power. Typically, you can go as low as 50% sunlight and still get a fully charged battery in just a few hours. As with conventional solar power generation panels, they still work best when they are in full sunlight.

Advantages

One of the main advantages to solar generating backpacks is that you can generate power with them when you are walking or hiking. This is ideal if you have to travel on foot, bike, or some other mode of transport over large and small distances. Even if you decide to travel through a forest or other area with some degree of shading, you can still generate at least some power.

Second, one of the biggest problems with large scale and home based solar power generation systems is that the sun moves a significant degree every 15 minutes. As such, there are very few systems that can keep up with this motion and have the entire panel absorbing as much heat and light from the sun as possible.

By contrast, a solar generating backpack can be easily repositioned. No matter whether you set up camp and plan to stay for several days, or you are traveling by car, simply change the orientation of the panels to get as much sunlight on to them as possible. This includes easily changing the angle of the panels to accommodate seasonal changes that are even harder to compensate for in stationary systems.

Disadvantages

Here are five problems that you may encounter with solar generating backpacks:

  • Depending on the battery size, the overall weight of an empty pack can be a quite heavy. Though five pounds for a battery and solar panel may not seem like much now, that weight can be extremely burdensome over a long hike. Even though you should be able to carry 40 – 60 pounds for several hours at a time for the sake of survival fitness, there are bound to be times when you will find yourself thinking that you aren’t getting quite as much power as you hoped considering the added weight of the pack.
  • Solar panels and batteries can all be destroyed by an EMP.
  • Even though modern solar panels are sturdier and last longer, they will eventually wear out. Pay careful attention to the warranty on the panels and batteries. If the manufacturer will not fully guarantee the product for at least 10 years, then you should not expect it to stand up to harsh conditions or uses that might occur in a survival situation.
  • It may be hard to shield the panels from damage during rainy weather or cold temperatures.
  • You will not be able to generate power at night or on days that are below 30% of full sunlight.

What About DIY Options?

Interestingly enough, some of the most common problems that you might encounter with a solar generating backpack may be solved by creating your own system. Here are some advantages:

  • You can use any backpack that you like. This includes a heavy duty backpack with rails, a surplus military pack designed for rugged conditions, or just about any other pack that appeals to you for use as a bug out or bug in bag.
  • You can choose any battery and power rating that suits your needs. No matter whether you want to see if you can get batteries based on cotton, nano technologies, or some other battery type, they can all be added to your pack after purchase. As you may be aware, cotton based batteries may be as much as 50% or more lighter, will last longer, and supply much more power.  Waiting for this technology alone to hit the markets may be well worth your effort instead of buying a pack that cannot be changed over time to accommodate a different battery type.
  • Today there are also many advancements in solar panel and solar energy harnessing technologies. This includes solar power collecting materials that can be printed out using a regular printer. These soft, light weight, pliable solar collectors can be custom fitted onto your backpack and give it an even larger area for collecting solar energy.
  • All of the parts that you can choose can be selected with long term ease of repair or rebuilding in mind. For example, if you choose printable solar panels, you can easily pack extras away or make sure that you can always manufacture new ones as needed.

Piezoelectric Power Generating Sneakers

power shoesPiezoelectric Power Generating Sneakers are worn just like regular shoes.

Depending on the model, they may have thicker soles or some other adaptions to accommodate tiny batteries and the main power generating area in the soles.

No matter whether you are walking or running, they will generate power and charge up batteries.

Quartz crystals, tourmaline, and some other materials will emit electrons in one specific direction if the material is squeezed or heated. In the case of piezoelectric power generating sneakers, the materials respond to pressure from your foot by emitting a small amount of electricity.

This electricity, in turn, is captured by a rechargeable battery which can be used to power any number of devices. Typically, the amount of power generated by these shoes is very small, however as the technology improves, it may one day rival backpack power generating systems.

Advantages

One of the greatest advantages of piezoelectric power generation sneakers revolves around the fact that you don’t have to do anything extra in order to generate power. No matter whether you are walking, hiking, running, or even pedaling a bike, the energy you are already expending to carry out these activities will also go into generating power.

Since these shoes are also fairly light weight, you don’t have to worry about them becoming burdensome on a long or protracted journey.

In a survival situation, the ability to generate electricity can easily be something that draws unwanted attention in your direction. For example, if you are running around with a solar power generating backpack, or something else equally obvious, rest assured that people might try to steal it from you.

On the other hand, if you chose piezoelectric power generating sneakers, that blend in with others commonly worn in your area, chances are no one will ever know you are generating power as you walk.

Disadvantages

Even though these sneakers have a lot to offer when compared to heavier or more obvious power generation methods, they also fail to generate as much power as you might need.  In some cases, they may also not be as durable, and the shoe itself may be very uncomfortable.

It is also important to think about how long shoes actually last in the modern world. For example, if you walk a few miles a day and purchase a mid-range pair of shoes or boots, you will be lucky if the soles don’t fall apart in 4 – 6 months.

From that perspective, piezoelectric power generating shoes may not be a good option if you plan on using them to generate power beyond a few months. To add insult to injury, the electronic components and batteries may even fail long before you have to get a new pair of shoes.

What About DIY Versions?

There are many advantages to making your own piezoelectric power generation shoes. Here are just a few things to consider:

  • You can customize just about any pair of shoes and never worry about a name brand or other feature giving away the fact that your shoes can generate power. For example, if you have a favorite brand of hiking boots, you can customize them with a DIY insole and then add the battery to another part of the shoe where it will not be uncomfortable
  • Once you know how to build a DIY piezoelectric power generation system, you can adapt it to as many shoes, or even other items that can be used to generate power. This includes straps that you wear while talking or eating as well as ones that you can use when using hand grip exercisers.
  • Making your own insoles will make it easier to repair or make new ones as needed. At the very least, if you have shoes that will last for several months, you may be able to replace the insoles as needed without having to buy a whole new pair of shoes.
  • It may also be possible to build EMP proof systems that can be used in just about any situation. Just be aware that your battery options may be a bit limited because of the small size that you will be working in.

Backpack Powered by Walking

nPower-PEG-Carried-in-BackpackWhen it comes to generating power, backpacks that generate power from walking are often used for tablets and other higher drain devices.

This particular system does not use solar panels or other forms of external energy to generate electricity.

Rather, they rely on the repetitive motions of your body to generate power as you walk, run, or carry out other activities.

If you do some research, you are sure to come across a range of devices that generate electricity by using gears and other assemblies. In this case, backpacks that generate power by walking or running rely on cords that connect the backpack to your feet or arms.

As you move, the motion from your body is translated into electricity via the gears or other devices inside the backpack. From there, the power is stored in a battery, much as it would be for solar power generation backpacks.

Advantages

Unlike solar power generating backpacks, the body powered models do not require sun or any other energy from the environment. If you are inclined to walk on a rainy day, at night, or even in a snowstorm, these power generators will continue to work. As long as the ropes are hooked up to your shoes or arms, and you are moving, then you will have a steady supply of power moving into the battery.

Unlike piezoelectric power generating shoes, anyone can put on the backpack and start walking to generate power. Since the ropes are fairly easy to adjust, they are truly a “one size fits all” power source that can also be used to carry important items from one place to another.

Body powered backpacks are also more durable. You will never have to worry about an electronic solar panel wearing out, or a shoe insole breaking down.

Disadvantages

Even though body powered backpacks can generate a good bit of power, they can also be very uncomfortable to wear. For example, if you decide to attach the ropes/cords to the back of your shoes, you will constantly feel the pull of that cord while you are walking. If you don’t like being a puppet on a string, then you are not likely to be comfortable with this feeling.

Aside  from being uncomfortable, you will need to make sure you can walk or run with these cords even if you are in a woods or some other area where they might get tangled up easily.

Perhaps it can be said that if you are fortunate enough to be walking along a wide or well kept trail, then you can use this system without too many problems. Otherwise, you may have to disconnect the cords and use them in a  location that has fewer obstructions.

The cords for body powered backpacks are also going to be very obvious to others when you are walking around. Looters, rioters, or anyone else looking to steal may well recognize that the pack you are carrying generates power, and then they will want to steal it from you.

No matter whether you need this power to charge up medical devices or something else of importance, all your hard work can be lost in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, if you try to tuck the cords inside your pants, they will not work as well, if at all. To add insult to injury, the constant rubbing along the backs of your legs can cause burns and other problems.

What About DIY Options

Even though you can convert a regular backpack into a body powered device, it may not be worth your effort. Among other things, you may not be able to overcome the basic disadvantages of this design let alone gain any benefit from doing so.

That being said, if you are intent on creating a single backpack that can generate power using multiple methods, it never hurts to integrate this system with a solar powered system. At the very least, if you decide to travel at night through an unpopulated area, you can still generate power for a range of needs.

DIY Propeller Hat Power Generator

6666898_sHave you ever seen the striped hats with pinwheels or propellers on them?

If so, you may find them more of an amusing toy than an actual means to generate power.

But with some creative insight and a few simple materials, you can, indeed, use these propeller hats to generate a good bit of power.

If you have ever seen pinwheel caps, then you should also realize they can be a fun, easy way to generate power. While these caps are often the prop of stereotype geniuses, there are no caps on the market that can be used to generate power.

However, if you add a coil of wire to the hat and some magnets to the propeller, you can induce an electrical current. Just make sure that you don’t get a shock from the cap, and that you have a suitable battery solution.

Depending on the speed that the propellers move and the efficiency of the coil and battery system, you may be able to generate enough power for medical devices, tablets, and perhaps higher drain cameras.

Advantages

In the time during, and well into the post-crisis period, being able to avoid detection is going to be very important. Typically, anything that you have of value can make you a target of looters and just about anyone else that wants to steal from you so that they can gain something to sell or use for their own needs.

Unlike many other means of generating power, a propeller hat will easily be missed. Though people may think you look a little odd, they aren’t likely to see a reason to take the hat from you. In fact, if you dress in scrubby clothes and look a little on the dangerously deranged side, people may even decide to avoid you because they think you have nothing. Just be careful that bullies and other predators don’t try to hunt you for sport because they think you can’t defend yourself.

If you are far enough away from the main site of an EMP event, simple coils and magnets should not be damaged by the event, therefore, you will still be able to generate power as if nothing happened. In a worst case scenario, simply carry extra batteries and charging links in a Faraday cage.

As with many other body powered devices, you can also adapt any number of hats, helmets, and caps to generate electricity. In this case, you may also be thinking about situations where you will need to wear a gas mask or even bullet proof head gear in order to survive a riot situation.

While it may sound strange to put a propeller on any of these headgear items, never forget that you can still be generating power that might be used for targeting systems, or anything else where battery failure would spell disaster for you.

Disadvantages

When compared to other body based power generating systems, there is a definite limit to the amount of power you can generate from a single cap. Among other things, the weight of the magnets and coils can get fairly heavy and become burdensome.

It should also be noted that this system will be inducing both magnetic and electric currents very close to your brain. As such, there may be long term health risks such as cancer and other diseases. If you do not trust  bluetooth technology, cell phones, WIFI, and even electric sockets because of the radiation they emit, then you may also want to rethinking generating electricity so close to your head.

In the modern world, it is often easy to get mired in complex technologies and other assorted ideas aimed at generating fairly large amounts of power. On the other hand,  there are also a number of toy and body based power devices that might just provide enough power for smaller devices that are also of immense importance to you.

Depending on the device that you choose, even a small investment may be enough to test out some alternative energy sources as well as make it much easier to survive just about any situation and keep small, low power need devices operating at a time when you need them most.

When Is It Okay to Join the Looters?

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from Benjamin Burns. Benjamin discusses a subject that I have written about in the past and it always creates controversy. How To Sun Map Your Garden

big sun map

Plants are expensive. Even if you start them from seeds and you don’t have much money invested in them, you’re going to be investing time in getting them to grow. It would be incredibly easy if all plants needed the same amount of sunlight, and if all areas of your garden got the same amount of sun on a daily basis, but it just doesn’t work that way!

Some plants need full sun, which usually means that they need at least 6 hours or so of direct sunlight daily in order to grow properly. Partial sun or partial shade means that the plant needs between 3 and 6 hours of direct sun daily.

Dappled sun or indirect sun means that your plant needs 3-5 hours of sun, but that it shouldn’t be direct – in other words, plant it somewhere that the sun trickles through leaves or screen. Finally, some plants thrive in full shade, which means that they don’t do well with more than 3 hours of direct sun daily.

Now that we’ve gotten the definitions out of the way, let’s talk about how you can figure out where your plants would thrive the best before you plant them. It’s called sun mapping and will save you a ton of time and plants that don’t thrive.

How to Do It

Sun mapping will require that you be around the house for a full day, daylight to whenever the sun leaves your garden area, but then you’ll know exactly where you should put each plant.

You can actually buy kits that monitor your yard’s exposure for about twenty bucks but you only know how long the sun is shining in those particular spots. If this is good enough for what you need to do, go ahead and pick it up. All you have to do is put it in your garden, turn it on, and come back to it 24 hours later. It will give you all the information you need for that area.

Since, as preppers and homesteaders, we’re not particularly into depending upon a store-bought kit, you may be interested to know that there is a way for you to do it yourself with just some graphing paper, some colored pencils, and your time.

First, in order to sun map your yard, you’ll need to draw a fairly accurate depiction of your yard. Be sure to include any structures, including your house or garage, and trees that are going to shed shade over the area at any point because that’s going to be important. You don’t have to be dead accurate, but you want to be as close as possible.

Before you begin to sun map, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.

  • Deciduous trees are going to lose their leaves in the fall and grow them back in the spring so if you’re in a relatively mild climate, this is important. Also, if you’re mapping in the spring, you may want to wait until the trees have all of their leaves on before you map.
  • The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, which means that your sun and shade are going to be moving from east to west.
  • Pump houses and other structures are going to cast shadows, as will trees.
  • Shade moves clockwise
  • It’s best to do this twice per year; once in the summer when the days are long, and once in the early spring or late fall when the days are shorter so that you have a more accurate depiction of when every part of your yard gets sun.

Now that you have your yard all drawn out, get ready to get up early tomorrow!

solar-altitude-northern-hemisphere-resized-600

As soon as the sun comes up and starts shining even a little bit on your yard, draw a line on your map that shows where the sun starts and record the time on your map.

Now here is where your method may vary a bit.

Some people like to sun map the garden every hour, which is no doubt the most accurate, and some only do it a few times throughout the day.

Since the process is basically the same, there’s not really any difference in how you map your yard; just how many colored pencils you’ll need!

The next time you go out, (no more than a couple of hours later), use a different color pencil to draw another sun line, and also shade any areas that are now shaded. Repeat this process throughout the day. By the end of the day, you’ll have a pretty good depiction of what parts of your yard get how much sun. Be sure to mark the time that your garden or yard is completely shaded.

It’s important that you are as detailed as possible in your notations while you’re sun mapping your garden. Record where the sun is dappling through, and record where the house or barn starts to shade the garden and when. After you have your sun map complete, you’ll be able to take the next step: planning your garden!

Sun mapping can be a bit confusing but once you actually start doing it, you’ll see that the process is much simpler to do than it is to read about. This may seem like a lot of work, but it will pay off in the end when your shady plants are enjoying the shade and your full-sun plants are basking in the rays all day!

If you’ve ever sun mapped and have any suggestions, or if you’d like to give it a try but still have some questions, please feel free to comment in the designated section below.

Things To Consider Before Bugging Out

Guest Post by Michael

A year or so ago, I became interested in preparing for a disaster, so I went to the Internet to see what other folks are doing to prepare. I was surprised to learn the number of people who have been preparing for quite some time, and also at the level of their preparations; purchasing remote properties, building up a personal arsenal, and buying and storing food stocks for their families.

I figured I needed to ‘get on board’ and start my own preparations. I had a lot to do and a lot to consider; food stocks, weapons and ammunition, off-the-grid living, ...

5 New Products For Your Off-Grid Survival

big products

Today’s article is aimed at boosting your chances of survival when living off-grid, and then some!

I mean, the ideas I will present to you today are perfectly applicable to your day-to-day life, but in the case of a SHTF event, they will dramatically increase your chances of survival and they’ll make your life more comfortable.

1. Foot Powered Washing Machine

As you can probably imagine, the first thing that will go down in a SHTF scenario will probably be the power grid. Without electricity, almost everything that we’re currently taking for granted will cease to function. You know – internet service along with most other conveniences, including your washing machine.

So, the first idea, actually the first product, that’s designed for increasing your survival chances (ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit) is a foot powered washing machine.

By no means is this idea new. I mean, people washed their clothes without electricity for hundreds of years, and the first designs for “man-powered” washing machines date way back to the 18th century.

In the last couple of decades, the new high-tech washing machines have become fairly efficient in terms of water and energy use, but the best washing machine on the planet will be rendered useless if there’s no power available.

Also, even the most efficient and eco-friendly washing machine consumes electricity, and if you’re trying to go completely off the grid and don’t have an electrical system yet, then this is the green way for you to go.

Enter the new electricity-free washing machine, which is powered by you, the owner, via a specially designed food-pedal. This baby is excellent if you don’t want to hand-wash yet you need a mechanical and as-green-as-possible alternative.

The Drumi is the name of the gizmo and it has an almost zero environmental impact; also, it saves energy, time and money all at the same time, in just one product. The Drumi is very easy to operate: all you have to do is to fill it with water, add the detergent and the laundry, then pump on the pedal. You can wash up to 5 pounds of laundry at a time with the Drumi, making it suitable for college students or camping trips, but not so much for large families.

Also, this baby comes in very handy in case of power outages and for saving a few bucks on your utilities bill, because guess what: the Drumi uses eighty percent less detergent and water when compared to a traditional washing machine, not to mention zero electricity.

A load of laundry only requires about 3 gallons of water; one and a half for the washing cycle and another gallon and a half for the rinse. Another cool thing about this device: the total wash cycle only takes 6 minutes, and that’s practically no time at all when compared to regular washing machines.

Here’s a video presenting the Drumi locked and loaded, in full throttle; if you think that’s the machine you’re looking for, you can pre-order the foot powered washer for $129, but it will take a while to actually get it.

2. Free Electric Hybrid Bike

Now, that I’ve presented you with the man-powered Drumi, let’s go a little bit farther with the human traction trend, with an even better idea. How about powering ALL of your home appliances for 24 hours while doing your regular one hour daily workout? How does this sound? Awesome, right?

People always complain about the electric bill and how they’re so busy, they never make it to the gym…well, this fantastic idea kills these two birds with one stone.  You have to admit that keeping yourself in shape while powering your homestead for the entire day, basically free of charge, is highly motivating! I totally love this idea, and the best thing is that you can talk your entire family into doing it!

Also, having free power available anytime and anywhere sounds outstanding for those who want to live off grid by choice and consent, not to mention the one billion-plus people all around the world who live without having access to electricity.

Now, that I’ve hopefully captured your attention, let me show you the Free Electric hybrid bike, the brain-child of Manoj Bhargva, the founder and inventor of this game-changing device.

Video first seen on Billions in Change.

When you pedal the bike, you also drive a flywheel which drives a generator that charges a battery; it’s that simple. The Free Electric hybrid is highly efficient; so efficient actually that just one hour of pedaling will provide enough electricity for a rural homestead to last for 24 hours.

Basically, this project uses human mechanical energy for mitigating one of the most pervasive problems of the world’s population: those who don’t have access to electricity in the 21st century. And obviously, the Free Electric project comes pretty handy for preppers who want to achieve off-grid sustainability.

Having electricity available at your fingertips, regardless of your location, means a lot in terms of additional benefits. With electricity also comes internet access, which translates into educational learning opportunities, as well as the obvious benefits of modern refrigeration, lighting and heating.

Exercising to GET that electricity is a great step toward remedying the obesity crisis in the developed world and your electric bill will go away, all by using clean energy… Just to give you an idea, over half of the world’s population, or almost 4 billion people, has limited access to electricity;  only 3-4 hours a day if they’re fortunate enough to have it at all.

This free energy project could change everything, starting with easy access to education/learning opportunities via Internet. Google works on a project to provide the whole world with free internet using blimps, so if there’s a way to get power, then internet would be available, too.

3. Mud Oven Charger

The next cool idea comes from M’Chenga-Malawi. Okay, again, this isn’t exactly living off-grid, but at least it would be a way to keep communications available as long as satellite structures weren’t disrupted. This one shows you how to charge your phone using nothing more than a mud-oven.

Sounds far-out? Well, check out the video below and see for yourself how it’s done in the Darkest Africa!

4. Rom in Room Heat Conserving

Okay, let’s move on to the next idea.. If you’re living in harsh climates, I bet you’ve already faced the not-so-pleasant exercise of trying to cut down on your heating bill by turning the heat down during the night.

Say hello to Room in Room, a post-modern project for a post-modern world, inspired from the indoor tents from South Korea. This clever design reduces your heating bill significantly during the winter months by conserving your body heat while you’re sleeping using some sort of a bed-tent.

In this way, you can keep the overall room temperature down without suffering from thermal discomfort while sleeping. Basically, Room in Room is a floorless tent built over your bed; it’s as simple as that. The design is clever. In order to fit almost any type of mattresses design/size, and it’s made using a blend of cotton and high density polyester, namely Tetron Cotton.

According to the Room in Room’s creators, the temperature inside the tent is approximately 10 F warmer than the outside room and using it may save ~10% on your heating bill. Here’s the website and here are some user testimonials.

5. One Pole Tree House

The next idea comes directly from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe: a One Pole Tree House in the woods! Basically, this project makes possible a co-habitation between trees and people by designing homes which are shaped and function just like trees, co-existing with these organic eco-systems, without displacing them.

I don’t know about you, but I think the idea is outstanding and beautiful, and I hope it catches with people, at least in Denmark, where everything began. Check out the inventor’s website. If you’re like me, you’ll stand in awe. It’s so beautiful and smart, it restores some of my faith in humanity!

Last but not least, let me present you with the Sun Hive. This high-tech bee-friendly hive was designed by a German sculptor and it’s made using a combination of rye-straw woven baskets and wooden support structures. What makes it different from other bee hives is that the Sun Hive is installed up in the air, 8 feet up, thus making the bees happier and the people passing nearby safer. Here’s a video revealing the details of the Sun Hive project, a hive like no other – a hive for bees, to quote the creators.

What To Expect In 2016

big 2016

This year has been an interesting one, to say the least. While I can’t say that I like much of what has happened since January, there has been little time for boredom this year. Between terrorist attacks and the Black Lives Matter movement, there has been enough unrest and violence to keep anyone awake. Nor does it look like any of that is likely to end.

Regardless of the numbers coming out of Washington, the nation is not doing better. We all know that the government is cooking the books, putting out false data. But the reality and the numbers don’t match. Unemployment is higher than ever, as indicated by the workforce participation rate, and prices are going up all over, defying the “official” inflation rate.

There is little chance that things are going to get better during Obama’s last year in office. He is studiously ignoring reality, so he doesn’t even understand how things really are.

Like the academian that he pretends to be, all he sees is his theories, then he commands the government to make the data match what he sees. Someone operating like that can’t turn things around for the better, even if they had some idea of what to do.

What Our Friends Foresee for 2016

Jeff Anderson – Modern Combat and Survival

jeff“This last year there was plenty of bad news to go around, which seems likely to affect survivalists even more in the months to come. These include, as they always seem to, increased infringement on your constitutional rights… but also some dangers you may not have considered.

Prediction #1: The “Other” Terrorism – It’s no longer a surprise that our privacy is being violated each and every day by NSA, DHS, and other alphabet agencies of the government. But now that we’ve seen Jihad-style terrorism on American soil in San Bernardino, there will be that much more justification — in the eyes of those in government — for increased spying initiatives on our citizens. This will, as always, be done to make us “safe.”  The real target? Well, in their own words… “homegrown domestic terrorists” whose profile basically reads like an casting call for an episode of “Doomsday Preppers”.  (Maintain OPSEC my friends.)

Prediction #2:  Increased Gun-Control Measures – The same high-profile shootings that have our politicians screaming for more and deeper surveillance also have those politicians’ grubby paws out to grab our guns – possibly through unconstitutional executive orders. Look for a lot more attempts to restrict the rights of law-abiding Americans to buy firearms, and expect outright bans of “assault” style weapons.

Prediction #3:  Pandemic “Red Flags” – It’s hard to admit it, but even the CDC and World Health Organization are saying we’re long overdue for another pandemic. The Ebola scare last year faded quickly from the news. Any prepared citizen, though, should remember how quickly we started to come apart when we thought Ebola could be in our schools or in our apartment buildings.

You don’t have to be Nostradamus to see these three threats — invasion of privacy, gun control, and pandemic scares — coming in 2016. We had best be ready for them.”

Todd Sepulveda – Prepper Website

Todd-EtM“When I started Prepper Website, I really felt that I was being led into preparedness after a time of prayer, you can read my story here.

As I prepare for 2016, I feel that prepping my spiritual life is more important than ever.  I will stock up and prepare in every way possible, but I want to make sure that my relationship with the Lord is most definitely prepared.

As a result, I’m focusing more on my prayer time and  reading and studying God’s Word.  I’m also focusing on building relationships with other Christians, and if they happen to be Christian Preppers, that is a big plus!  This focus has led me to use one of my prepper sites as a point of contact for Christians who want to link up.  On my site, www.prepperchurch.com, you can find Christian Preppers in your state or if you can’t find one, you can easily setup to start one!

One Scripture that was very important in moving into preparedness is Amos 3:7, “Indeed, the Lord God does nothing without revealing His counsel to His servants the prophets.”  God always told His people what He was up to, sometimes they listened, and sometimes they didn’t.  He gives you the choice.

There is so much craziness in the world that it is very easy to become discouraged and depressed, waiting for the poop to hit the fan and wondering what it might look like for you and your loved ones.  But if you are prepped spiritually, this end, is not the end!  I wish you the best from Prepper Website!”

Elise Xavier – More Than Just Surviving

elise“What are we preparing for in 2016? We’re preparing for as much as possible, concentrating primarily on not the big, but the small, more likely events.

Power outages, natural disasters, health problems, and the potential of job loss – these are the things I see as the most likely events to take place in the lives of preppers in 2016, and so these are the emergency situations I encourage other preppers to make sure they’re as prepared for as they can be in the upcoming year.

You can’t prep to survive everything, so you should make sure you have your priorities straight in prepping for the most likely events to take place first.”

What Do We Expect in 2016?

So, the next year is going to be a hard one. We can expect many things to happen. Unfortunately, they will not be things for the better. We’re going to have to wait for a conservative president to get into office, for things to truly turn around. The question is, will we get one?

As I look down the road before us, these are the things I see happening. These aren’t prophecies, as I’m not a seventh son, born under a seventh son. Nor do I have a crystal ball to use. But I can look at what’s going on in the world and see trends. All I can give you is where I see those trends going.

Terrorist Attacks

ISIS has made it clear that they intend to take the war to us. The recent attack in San Bernardino was the opening salvo of their war on our soil. We can expect more to follow, as they try to wear us down and force us to submit to their will.

There is no way that ISIS can beat the United States in a conventional war, that’s why they are forced to resort to terrorism. Their goal isn’t to destroy our military might, but simply to sew enough fear and discord in our society, that we capitulate to them. That way, they’ll end up with what they want, rule over the world.

Of course, there’s a major miscalculation in that strategy. While I’m sure that liberals would be quick to surrender, thinking that they were doing the noble thing, conservatives won’t. If things get to that point, we’re going to see warfare in our streets. While there are many who might think that to be good, we have to remember that our government will side with the Muslims, as long as Obama is in office.

Increased Racial Tension

I firmly believe that the racial tension which we are experiencing in our country today has been intentionally manufactured by Obama in an effort to bring about racial civil war. If he truly cared about Blacks, there would be no way that he would be allowing the things to happen which are happening. Racial civil war would be disastrous for the Black community, as they are so greatly outnumbered by Whites who own guns.

Every opportunity, Obama and his surrogate, Sharpton, push the race buttons, creating anger and lawlessness. Then, his Department of Justice refuses to prosecute, instead looking for excuses to bring hate crime charges against those who say or do anything against Muslims or Blacks.

Obama has already given himself the right to declare martial law at any time he so chooses. He could use racial civil war or terrorism as a legitimate excuse to do that, consolidating power in his hands and turning the United States into a dictatorship. I would not be surprised to learn that the whole reason he has been pushing the racial unrest rhetoric is for this very reason.

Obama Ignores Congress, Pushing Gun Control and Climate Change

We’ve already seen how Obama intends to spend the rest of his reign, ignoring Congress and pushing his pet issues. The GOP led Congress can’t do anything, because they can’t get a supermajority to override his veto. As long as he has that, he will get his way.

Of course, Harry Reid is telling Congress that they need to cooperate with the Democrat minority. This is no different than the message he’s been pushing ever since Obama got into office. As far as the Democrat leadership is concerned, there’s only one opinion, theirs. Obama dictates it and they accept it. The problem, in their eyes, is that there are Republicans who won’t obey their marching orders.

Obama’s Bid for a Third Term

Obama has already hinted at wanting to serve a third term, citing his excellent track record as a president. He’s so delusional that he thinks he is the best president this country has ever had. Of course, when you’re getting to dictate statistics and your minions cook the books to match them, it just confirms that delusion.

I think the big thing we’re going to see this year will be a push for a third term. Democrats have already talked about repealing the 22rd amendment of the Constitution. We can expect a true push for this in 2016, but I think it will fail.

That leaves Obama the option of remaining in office by executive fiat. That’s something I wouldn’t put past him. With the military leadership gutted, it’s doubtful that there is anyone in a position of authority who can and will stand up to him. His hand-picked generals will capitulate, even if they complain about what he’s doing in private.

Of course, all he has to do to make that legitimate is declare martial law. Once he does that, he can suspend the Constitution, dismiss Congress and put the elections “on hold” until things get better. Of course, he’s the one who has to decide when things are “better” so that won’t ever happen.

This could lead to civil war. That’s hard to predict, because civil war would require enough people getting mad at the same time, that they would be willing to risk their lives taking action. Without the ability to communicate such plans, without the government knowing, it’s hard to gather the necessary momentum to make civil war break out. But if Obama pushes too fast, it could happen.

The Economy Getting Worse

There’s no question that the U.S. economy is going to continue getting worse. We’ve been on a downward slide for several years, and nothing is being done to make it better. In fact, several things are being done to make it worse, especially by forcing major corporations to move overseas.

There is absolutely no incentive for business in this country today. Corporate taxes are some of the highest in the world. Unless a corporation is receiving government stimulus or tax breaks, they can’t afford to continue operations. Smaller companies, who don’t have the money to buy government officials, don’t stand a chance.

The massive number of regulations that Obama’s administration is putting out are making it harder and harder for businesses to succeed. His war on coal is going to cost millions of jobs. Likewise many of his other initiatives. If the $15 minimum wage goes through, you can be sure that it will cost many more jobs. Liberal models of economics don’t take reality into account; they are pure theory, based on nothing more than good wishes.

The Elections

Right now, I feel that the 2016 presidential elections are hanging in the balance. If Trump or Cruz wins the nomination for the Republican Party, the Republicans have a good chance of winning. But the establishment GOP is against either of them winning. They want a fully brokered convention, so that they can take the nomination away from the will of the people and give it to some RINO that they want.

This would be disastrous. Trump and Carson have already said that they’d run as independents. I’m not sure if Cruz would, but it really doesn’t matter. If there is any independent conservative running, it will divide the conservative vote and the Republicans will lose. That means that Hillary or Bernie will win the presidency and be able to take the country farther down the slippery slope to socialism.

Either Democrat candidate will continue with what Obama has been doing. If anything, they will push harder to take more money in taxes, give away more goodies to their base and steal our rights.

We can expect that the country will suffer even more and may not even survive. A wrong outcome from these elections or Obama staying in office by hook or by crook, could lead to the ultimate demise of the United States of America.
