Prep Blog Review: When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going!

prep blog reviewThe past weeks have been filled with one horrible news after the other, all summing up to attacks on our lives. And when, God forbid, you find yourself in a situation like this, there’s no time for improvisation.

Knowledge and skills will make a difference and will help you stay alive. That’s why you can never know too much about self-defense and the weapons that will assist you to this purpose.

1. Ruling the night with night vision

night vision“He who can fight in the dark will rule the night!  I have been looking at night vision for a while and the only thing that has really held me back has been the cost.

In today’s post, we are going to look at several types of night vision and whether or not they are worth the cost, they are selling for.  Let’s get started, so just sit back, grab a cup of coffee and let’s talk about it.

What exactly is night vision?  Well, the type of night vision that I am talking about are the electronic devices that use ambient light and magnify it to allow one to see in the dark, when they otherwise would not be able to.”

2. How to Avoid Getting Robbed During the Holiday Season

holidays“It seems that during the holiday season more and more thieves are out and about.  A couple of days ago I heard on the news that armed men robbed a lady who was who unloading packages in her own driveway.

The cops were not sure if the thieves followed the shopper from the mall or they were just cruising around looking for an opportunity to target unsuspecting victims.

3. Why Preppers Need Guns: 3 Reasons Firearms Play a Vital Role in Your Defensive Plan

prepper guns“One of the many adages of the prepper world is, “If you can’t defend it, you don’t own it.”

If you’re new to the preparedness lifestyle, this saying basically means that all of your supplies, your stockpiles, your carefully selected buckets of food, and the time and money you spent on preparation will be for naught if you can’t protect it against those who may seek to take it from you.  This is generally accepted as a truth in the prepper community. Most of us believe that we must be prepared to defend ourselves and our property without relying on any type of “authorities” to protect us.”

4. Passing Off a Backup Gun

backup gun“Have you ever thought about using a backup gun to arm a companion who may not be inclined to carry a weapon himself?  What about arming a person who isn’t legal to carry in a particular environment.  As a cop, I can carry guns almost everywhere.  My girlfriend (who is well trained) cannot carry in the same places I can with her CCW permit.  Should I carry a gun so that I can arm her if she isn’t carrying?

Massad Ayoob talked about this strategy in an article he wrote last week.  I think the idea is worthy of some exploration.

Like many of you, I had generally discounted the strategy of being another person’s holster…until one day I was thrust into a situation where the idea didn’t seem so crazy.”

5. Weapons and Threats Preppers Will Face

weapons“Body armor can protect you against a multitude of threats preppers will face, and is well-known for its versatility. Vests are increasingly accessible, and their size and weight are being reduced all the time.

This means that protection can be worn comfortably in a variety of situations for extended periods. However, it can be difficult to know exactly how a vest can help you. It is all very well to explain the different levels of protection and the sizes of bullets, but what does this all actually mean? What exactly can a bullet proof vest protect you against?”

Why you should learn the basics of lock picking

By Ryan B

how-to-pick-a-lock-1To be a survivalist by nature means to take your fate into your own hands. To develop a mentality that says I am the master of my destiny and no obstacle – be it man, earth, or mind – will stand in my way. The survivalist hopes for the best, but prepares for the worst by acquiring skills that they may never once need to practically use in their lives. Skills that one day could very well be the difference between life and death. But what begs the question is what skills one should allocate their time towards training in. What skills could carry the most weight in terms of...

Friday Miscellany News Brief

1.) Obama finally makes his move on guns, WITHOUT Congress : Ironic — and somewhat gratifying, too — isn’t, it, that even as President Obama pushes to make gun control a key part of his legacy, the real legacy here may be driving new levels of Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

2.) How to Create a Gun-Free America in 5 Easy Steps : Yep good luck with that. There are an estimated 400 million guns in the U.S. and lots of people who know how and who will not hesitate to put several bullets through anyone who tries to confiscate or infringe on our Second Amendment Rights....

Checkmate To Danger: Here’s How To Always Win!

Situational AwerenessHave you ever thought how reading your emails in a public place reduces your chances to react and defy an attacker? How is this connected to the seat you’re choosing when entering a room, or the sitting cars in front of the building?

Well, there is a strong connection that you have to accept. It’s the one that helps you win when playing chess to danger, and it’s called situational awareness.

The meaning of the term “situational awareness” varies greatly according to context. Depending on whether you fly aircraft, enforce for the law, respond to emergencies, assess risk, work with power tools, work in cyber security, teach in a classroom or carry concealed weapon, your definition of the term likely differs from that of others.

To many, situational awareness is an idea or theory. To me, in the context of survival and emergency preparedness, situational awareness means maintaining yourself alert to threats to your survival and understanding those threats to the end of determining the most effective course of action to keep you and yours alive.

I would encourage you to treat the subject as a verb, an action word, something that you do, “to be situationally aware” as opposed to “read about situational awareness.”

What Is the Purpose?

Recent terror attacks might make this topic seem especially relevant, but I disagree. Complacency is the enemy of situational awareness. Situational awareness must be part of your everyday routine to be effective.

Also, it is one thing to have an academic understanding of situational awareness theory and quite another to apply it effectively in your daily life. I say this because you cannot stop at being alert, orienting yourself, assessing risk or making decisions.

We do these things in preparation to act. Thus, each step in the process should prepare you to act. Fortunately, there are many simple and effective tools to help you live and apply situational awareness as opposed to just reading about it.

Tactical Situational Awareness

There are many things that we do repeatedly in the course of day to day living. By turning them into techniques or drills, you can constantly train with nano-exercises in situational awareness as you work, run errands, travel and even as you just go about your life as we all do.

Like a game of chess, anticipate your options several steps ahead of what you are doing at the moment. Do not lock yourself into a predetermined course of action, but do be aware an autopilot setting to fall back on while you examine alternative courses of action.

For the tactical segment of survival situational awareness training, we will cover some tools for both your training and to have at the ready in your tactical toolbox.

1. Choose A Seat

When you decide to sit, choose a seat oriented so you can view what is going on around you and keep an eye on entries and exits and offers routes or space to escape or maneuver. Position yourself to better observe your surroundings and to fight or flee.

It may be with your back to a wall or corner which makes it harder for a threat to get behind you and allows you to monitor exits and entries without having to turn your head as often.

2. Identify the Exits

How many times a day do you enter a room or building? Every time you do should be a nano-exercise in SA. Exits can be doors, hallways, windows or just open space. Exits are usually also entrances and fatal funnels that can be used to your advantage or to the advantage of your enemy, so it is a good idea to stay aware of what they are and keep an eye on them.

3. Identify Concealment and Cover

Concealment is anything that blocks your enemy’s view but will not stop a bullet, like bushes or smoke. Cover is usually also concealment, but not always, such as in the case of clear bullet resistant glass, but cover provides ballistic protection against small arms, like a street curb or stone wall or the engine block on an auto.

As you move about your environment, identify cover and concealment and visualize maneuvering to place it between you and an imaginary or real enemy. Once you are in the habit, it will become almost automatic.

There is much more to this subject, such as how close to or behind cover you or your firearm should be, don’t poke you firearm out from behind a wall or window like you see all the time in the movies, and so forth, but this is the part directly related to SA.

4. Scan Hands and Waist Bands for Weapons

The eyes may be the window to the soul, but your enemy won’t kill you with his eyes. People are nearly always killed with weapons held in the hands. It takes very little effort to discreetly scan people’s hands and waist bands for weapons as you go about your day.

I sometimes do this thousands of times per day and am no worse for the wear and can affirm that it does not result in paranoia. Quite to the contrary, knowledge is the bane of fear.

5. Notice Sitting Cars

When you pull into a parking lot, notice cars with people sitting in them. Are any of them backed in for a speedy getaway? Parking lots are for parking. You should take notice of people sitting in vehicles for any reason. They may be up to no good. Criminals like moral support too and they also like to have the numbers in their favor and a quick getaway.

Could you give a description of the vehicle and driver? Were plates visible? Are the numbers taped over with electrical tape or vinyl numbers that can be cut on machine that works just like a printer. Is the plate out of state? Plates in some countries display not only the state, but the city as well.

6. Behavioral Indications of a Possible Threat

Indicators are helpful but must be taken in context. What is abnormal under one set of circumstances may be very normal in another. For example, there are times when it is normal to be afraid. If everybody else is scared and you do not want to stand out, you should pretend to be afraid too, even if you are not.

  • Patting or touching a spot on the body usually indicates the location of a weapon or contraband. Train yourself not to secure your sidearm to your body when you make a dash for cover from the rain or when you run to make the light for a cross walk. If it rains, just get wet. If you are vain, you might have to redo your hair, but you will be alive to do it. Don’t automatically put your hand on your firearm every time you feel threated either. Deadly force is not an appropriate response to all threats. It telegraphs your intentions, you will expose your ace in the hole and in some jurisdictions even gesturing to your weapon is considered brandishing, possibly a felony charge.
  • Abnormal eye contact is often an indicator of aggression or fear. We are adept at reading the human face. It is literally imprinted in our DNA. With a glance of the eye, we can often tell that an individual is a predator, be it a criminal, LEO or soldier.
  • Approaching people should always be viewed with a degree of suspicion. They may be a diversion/distraction, using a ruse to close the distance or try to approach from a blind spot. Face them and non-verbally or verbally challenge them.
  • Following or pace matching is an indicator that someone has taken an unhealthy interest in you. It could be a case of mistaken identity, road rage or something more nefarious and is easy enough to confirm.
  • 2 or more men, solitary or in groups, closing range at the same time often precedes an attack.
  • Looking both ways, checking their 6 or “shifty eyes” is often a threat indicator because most bad guys get nervous too and it is harder than you might think to make sure nobody is watching without drawing attention. Not all of them are skilled in tradecraft.
  • Sweating can be a sign of undue stress.
  • Being in a hurry is sometimes an indicator of a threat. I was once selected for a little extra attention by US Customs because I was late for a flight and constantly glancing at my watch. The behavior was less effective. Because of the search, I missed the flight and had to reschedule more flights.
  • Exaggerated movements or “trying too hard” when trying to perform what should be a routine task is often a sign someone is trying to fake it. Bad acting is not unique to Hollywood, terrorists can be overactors too.

7. Verbally Challenge Potential Threats

Before you draw your weapon, you need to establish intent, ability and opportunity to do death or grievous bodily harm. Ability is the tools to do the job: usually a weapon or disparity of force. Opportunity is whether the suspect could reasonably get away with the crime, such as you are alone in a parking lot at night as opposed to in a crowded party surrounded by a group of your friends.

Ability and opportunity are easy enough to establish. Intent can be harder because criminals usually rely on a degree of stealth to get close enough to intimidate or attack. Once you have established ability and opportunity, the verbal challenge forces the suspect’s hand, revealing his intent. Yell, “Stop! Let me see your hands!” as loud as you can, in command voice.

At this point, his choices are, comply by stopping and showing his hands or continue closing, thereby manifesting his intent. You will also make it clear to anyone within ear shot that you are being attacked, not the other way around.

This will be important if you survive the battle for your life on the street, because you’ll then likely have to battle in the court room for your freedom. Believe me, that is no fun either and once you have been through that, you will care about the law after that experience if you didn’t before.

Don’t be afraid to make a scene. Maybe he was going to ask you for a quarter, the time or a ride. Maybe asking you for something was his cover in the event that his attempt to rob you was thwarted.

If you are wrong, you made a scene and maybe made somebody uncomfortable. He can go find a tissue. If you were right, you very well may have saved your life. If he complies and you were successful, you may never know, and that’s just fine. That may very well be the case because I can tell you first hand, that this technique is effective.

self defense

8. Leverage Optics

Mirrors or glass in buildings can be leveraged to improve your field of vision in a discreet fashion. Ideally, your position should have multiple exits. Equipment-wise, a pair of sunglasses, monocular, pair of mini-binoculars, USB borescope for your smartphone, telescoping inspection mirror, or night vision monocular can also improve your odds of seeing without being seen if properly employed.

9. Cooper’s Color Codes

If have received any defense training, you have likely been trained in Cooper’s Color Codes. If you haven’t heard of them, learn them, because they are mission-critical curriculum. They are series of colors developed by Lt Col John Dean “Jeff” Cooper and represent human psychological state of awareness to threat. I will summarize the system in my own words:

  • White – A state of oblivion such as when you are asleep. You are unaware of any threats and therefore unprepared.
  • Yellow – A state of relaxed awareness. You should be mentally alert, but relaxed and actively scanning for threats. You can live every waking hour of your life at yellow with no adverse psychological or physiological stress to your organism. You should always be at least at yellow when you are armed.
  • Orange – A state of heightened alert. You have identified a potential threat and are preparing a fight or flight response.
  • Red – You have tripped the mental trigger in your mind committed to violence of action and initiated a fight or flight response.

Many instructors teach some variation of this system, but I am sticking to the basics here. It is important to note that you can’t be at Yellow and just bypass Orange and go straight to Red because arriving at Red is a process, not an event.

Trying to bypass a step results in a mental delay and delays are very deadly in combat. Consider that the vast majority of gun fights are over in 3.5 seconds or less. 3.5 seconds is plenty of time to do what you need to do, once trained, but it does not leave much room for delay.

10. OODA Loop

Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. The OODA Loop devised by USAF fighter pilot John Boyd was developed to teach air combat but has been influential not just in military circles, but also in business, sports, law and other fields. The OODA Loop seems deceptively simple at first glance but, like Cooper’s Color Codes, it is a subject worthy of a book, much less a mention in an article. The faster a pilot can cycle this loop, the more effective fighter pilot they will be.

I would point out that the OODA loop end results in actions. The observation, orientation and decision are largely internal and one could master the first three phases of the loop only to fail in the action phase or in the application of the OODA “on the street.”

11. Situational Awareness Obstacles

  • Reading and electronics use, independent of the device or medium you use, focusing on electronics, texting or reading puts you in an “awareness bubble” that contains just you and what you are reading, leaving you vulnerable. However, you can turn them into a tool by “pretending” to be absorbed or to listen to headphones with the music off as you keep an imaginary beat. People may figure you aren’t paying attention even though you really are.
  • Complacency, whether resting on past laurels, underestimating your enemy or simple boredom, it comes in many forms, all equally deadly.

Strategic Situational Awareness

Strategic situational awareness is making sense of or understanding threats or “sensemaking” if you will.

We live in a connected world where most people are so connected that they become information addicts. They will take wild risks to get their fix. Just 150 years ago, waiting years for a letter from a loved one was routine. Many of us now overvalue trivial information and will risk life and limb in emergencies for access to information that is of little practical use or unreliable.

In long duration, large scope catastrophic events, people who understand this need sometimes create their false information, manufacturing news that is nothing more than lies created for profit, power or to further their agenda.

Are you an information addict? While accurate intelligence could make the difference in you getting critical supplies before they are gone or getting out of Dodge before it is too late, there is also a value to not taking any unnecessary risks.

Stay adaptable as the situation unfolds and ask yourself whether you really need information or are just an information junky in search of a fix. When you determine there is a real need for information, be alert to ways to get that information that involve less risk than others.

Collecting Information

You can collect intelligence passively or actively. Passive usually involves less risk and an example would be listening to a radio as opposed to broadcasting or heading in to town to hear the latest rumors, which are likely just that.

Intelligence can be collected with your five senses, through media outlets, using communications gear or through social networking … and I’m not just talking about Facebook here. I mean actually people you know such as friends, family and colleagues. In a catastrophe, helpful information would be the scope or area affected, the intensity, the duration and any growth or other factors that may come into play.

Analyzing Information

This is the “sensemaking” part. You are trying to assess both the risk and your exposure to that risk. One of the most important aspects to this is understanding what information is relevant and what is not. In my experience, “experts” often get caught up in theory and overstimulated by more information than they can effectively apply.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb uses the example in his book, “Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder”, of Wall Street economists betting that the war in Iraq would lead to an increase in oil prices, because war in the middle east must be bad for oil prices. While a very “street” trader, who had never eaten Iraqi food and therefore the country did not exist to him, bet against it because he knew that the move was already anticipated and therefore “in the price” of a barrel of oil, turning a few hundred thousand dollars into more than ten million.

Conclusions and Action

Information is analyzed to the end of making a decision or formulating a plan which will result in action. This may happen in weeks or in fractions of a second. Do not get bogged down in the process or overly complicated procedures.

Do formulate the plan with actual execution in mind. The benefit of theory is often greatly overstated by people with expensive tuition to sell or a salary to justify. Once you master the basic mechanics, come back and learn the theory, but if that consists of reading articles or short essays, you need to redraw your education road map and include plenty of dirt or street time, drills, reading books and the best training you can swing.

Stocking Stuffers for the Prepper in Your Life

Well folks, Thanksgiving is over, and now it’s time to start thinking about Christmas. Seems like just one holiday after another, personally, I could not care less, about getting presents, but other people do and some even expect it. But what do you get for them?

If they’re preppers it’s actually easy – you just get them something that you, yourself would like to get. It’s even better if you already own and use the product that way you have first-hand knowledge of the usefulness and quality.

Below are a few prepper related stocking suffers that I’ll be...

9 Threats Of The Urban Prepper

BIG Urban PrepEven though you may have a well-tested food and water production system, medical alternatives, and adequate security for your bug in location, that doesn’t mean you are truly prepared for anything that can happen.

No matter whether you get caught in the crosshairs of an earthquake, flood, hurricane, or military takeover, a simple problem can quickly escalate into a life threatening one.

Here are nine additional special situations to consider if you are bugging in. They may seem “normal” or relatively easy to solve now, but they won’t be the same during a catastrophic collapse.

1. Fires

apartment fireFrom kitchen fires to cigarettes left burning in bed, there are many ways that a fire can get started and then escalate out of control. At this moment, chances are to call the fire department and get professional help as quickly as possible.

EMP attacks that result in massive stranding can prevent fire trucks from getting through, while hostile takeovers are likely to target fire, police, EMTs and other community stabilizers. Also, an increase in the number of fires caused by various means will lead to much longer waiting time, because crews are already at their limits or beyond.

Can you prevent these fires? Yes, you can, and here are just a few ways to prevent fire crews from reaching your bug in location:

  • Get a fire alarm that does not rely on batteries or microchip circuits. You can convert a LED based sensor to incandescent bulbs and tubes, however it can be complicated and expensive. Alternatively, store away several smoke detectors in an EMP proof bag or Faraday cage so that you can take them out and use them as needed.
  • Always know where fuse boxes and other key electrical nodes are in your home. If there is an electrical fire, the first thing you will want to do is shut off power coming into your area.
  • When dealing with a fire that may involve electricity (for example if an electric stove or even something powered by batteries) never try to put the fire out with water. Instead, try to suffocate the fire with a towel. When you spray water into a flame, live wires that have been compromised can cause the electricity to arc right through the water and into your body.
  • Keep a few fire extinguishers on hand. Keep them up to date and make sure that you know how to use them.
  • Take courses in fire prevention and practice all skills that may require using fire.
  • Keep a respirator and fireproof garments on hand in case you need to leave the building.

2. Power Is Restored but Your Building Has Hidden Wire Related Damage

Many experts believe that once the lights go out, it is not likely that they will ever be turned back on. Never underestimate power companies that are constantly looking for ways to upgrade and better manage any given crisis situation.

While some areas may take months or even years to recover, there are still others that might get power back in a matter of days or weeks. At face value, consider yourself lucky if power comes back right away because you think that you will be one step closer to resuming a normal life.

Now consider a situation where you are in the outer bands of a major earthquake or hurricane, you may actually get power back within one to two weeks. During that time, you may not realize that rains and shifting land masses can have a devastating effect on foundations, walls, and other parts of the building you are living in. Even though the buildings have survived, wires running inside the walls might have been stressed or damaged in some way.

And once the power goes back on, loose connections or other hidden damage on wires that feed the heating and cooling systems, or high voltage usage areas may not be obvious until it is too late. Once sparks start flying or parts start overheating, a fire is likely to occur. Unlike fires that start in a kitchen or other obvious location, you may have little or no advanced warning.

If you are in a major crisis situation, the best thing to do is immediately pull all the fuses or throw all the circuit breakers. No matter how long it takes after the power is restored, do not re-install fuses or reset the breakers until the building has been cleared by a licensed electrician.

While there are many parts of survival scenarios where you can get by on DIY and home based solutions, checking out the wiring in your building isn’t one of them. This is one area where you will need professional help that cannot be obtained through any other channel.

3. Under-City Collapse Zones

urban tunnelMany people are unaware of it, but the tunnels and conduits under the cities are actually in far worse shape than the roads and bridges. Some experts say that this problem can actually trigger an enormous social collapse or other major crisis within the next few years.

As long as these underground passages continue to wear and erode, it becomes harder and harder for them to support the weight of heavier cars, increasing amounts of traffic, tar and asphalt.

After an earthquake or flood, these areas could easily collapse and take out roadways and foundations of city buildings. In fact, even if the building you are in is relatively new or well maintained, there may still be forgotten tunnels or other underground structures nearby that have the potential to undermine the foundation of the building.

The best way to prepare for this problem is to avoid it altogether by getting out of the city. If you can’t do that, then prepare a bug in /out bag and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice, or if you must, stay in a damaged building until you can make your escape. Learn how to get out of stuck elevators, navigate through rubble, avoid electrocution from live wires in the rubble or hanging from the walls, and test floors for safe passage.

It may be helpful to attend city planning meetings and study the city budget and maintenance projects. Demand repairs to underground passages and help others in your area get together and demand politicians to fund these projects.

If you find politicians that resist because of the “cost”, then do not hesitate to have their salaries, expense accounts, and pet projects investigated, as well as the expense accounts and salaries of anyone under them. Chances are, you will find more than enough money to repair these underground passages if other things are put aside.

4. Air Quality Problems

If you think smog and other air quality problems are bad now, expect to get worse after a major crisis. While vehicles may not be running, there are bound to be more fires that are not brought under control as well as all kinds of toxins released into the air from industrial complexes. They can spew all kinds of poisons into the air if those supervising the machines are unavailable. Smoke inhalation is just one aspect of poor air quality. Odorless toxins disrupt lung tissue and lead to serious injury and death.

You need a good respirator on hand and sufficient replacement cartridges for the filter system, which should be capable of filtering out micro spores, dust, and most other particles. There are all kinds of oxygen concentrators available on the market, but not all of them are EMP proof, and a decent sized, durable unit will take a good bit of electricity. Concentrators are still useful to store away in an EMP proof box.

Also look for a system that will neutralize toxic gasses. In some cases, these filters use activated carbon, which you could replace or recycle once you know how to get into the cartridge and restore or refill the charcoal within.

If your budget is very tight, there are some other DIY filtering mediums that you can try: layering coffee filters and activated carbon to make a mask that covers your nose and mouth. While this mask can be very uncomfortable, it will still reduce your exposure to a number of dangerous air pollutants.

Try to make a filter from the best air filters on the market for heating systems, they can filter out just about every particle that is in the air. While these filters may cost 2 – 3 times as much as the cheaper ones, they are well worth it. As with using coffee filters, try adding a layer of activated carbon for protection.

Regardless of the DIY respirator that you choose to make, it must seal properly with your face without getting stuck permanently, so you could breathe comfortably through the filter.

5. Tetanus and Other Vaccine Covered Diseases

vaccineNo matter whether you step on a rusty nail, get bitten by a dog, or suffer from some other type of puncture wound, tetanus will always be a concern. Fortunately, this fatal infection is easily prevented by a simple vaccine that you must have every 5 – 7 years.

While this may seem relatively easy in the pre-crisis world, tetanus shots and other important vaccines may not be available once society collapses. Sadly, this is also the time when you are likely to have more injuries that will lead to exposure to deadly diseases such as tetanus. For right now, the best thing you can do is make sure you are always up to date on your tetanus shots.

It should also be noted that diphtheria, polio, and many other diseases have vaccines that are given during childhood and offer lifetime immunity. Chances are, you have heard many things about these vaccines carrying mercury and many other harmful substances.

Before you believe these claims and avoid vaccinating your children, stop and think about how deadly some of these diseases are in these days, and how much worse and more prevalent they will be in a crisis situation.

There may well be vaccine alternative forms that might be safer, however you will have to do some research to find them. For example, if a child is allergic to a certain ingredient in any given vaccine, it may be possible to formulate a vaccine that does not have it.

6. Vermin Control

If you live in a city or inner city area, then you are probably well acquainted with the local vermin control companies. This includes those who visit once a month to get rid of bedbugs, roaches, and other insects, as well as those who lay down traps and poisons for mice and other vermin.

You may be only slightly annoyed by an occasional rodent or insect in the pre-crisis world, but these animals will quickly overrun the area because there are no natural controls (such as birds, snakes, and cats) to get rid of them.

Some people think it is inhumane to kill vermin and that they prefer to use live traps. Some say that the vermin are just passing through, attracted to food, or are looking for a safe place to shelter. Until you’ve been bitten by a rodent that was supposed to be just “passing through”, you may not realize just how serious this problem can be.

Consider that rodents entering your home may very well be carrying rabies, the bubonic plague (it still exists today), and many other pathogens. Even if the animal itself is not infected with a particular disease, they may still be carrying fleas, ticks, and mites that harbor other dangerous diseases. For example, ticks may be carrying Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and even if the animal appears healthy, it can still be a Trojan horse.

When it comes to urban survival scenarios, there is no doubt that some people secretly believe they can hold their noses or something while noshing down on stewed or roasted vermin that they caught within their apartment. Sadly, these are the very same people that may become extremely sick because they consumed infected meat.

In short, if you think the current food supply is deadly, you simply haven’t seen anything until you have a look at the diseases that can be transmitted by inner city and city rodents and other vermin. Needless to say, pets that consume these animals or come into contact with blood from them will also be sickened.

Since the presence of vermin presents a serious danger without providing any benefits, you will need to know how to keep vermin away as well as eliminate those that make their way into your living area. Here are some methods that you can use:

  • Use peppermint, spearmint, and hot pepper to deter rodents
  • Make sure that food and water are tightly covered so that vermin don’t smell it and try to get at it.
  • Learn how to use a rat/mouse trap and keep a hammer on hand. No matter how much you may hate the idea of dispatching rodents, it is absolutely necessary to make sure they are dead before you put them in the trash. You should also keep rubber or latex gloves on hand so that your skin never comes into contact with the varmint or its fleas, ticks, or mites.
  • There are many different ways to trap mice including using water filled pails and planks. Be sure to find a method that works for you and then make sure you have at least 5 – 10 traps plus supplies on hand so that you can eliminate vermin as needed.

7. Loss of Vital Information and Communications

In their finer moments, many people who are tired of the rat race somewhat mischievously say that they will bug in during a major crisis because without communication devices, they will finally get some peace and quiet. When you can’t communicate with the outside world, you also cannot get help to manage fires and other emergencies that are more likely to come up. In addition, if you have survival stores and tools on hand, but don’t know how to use them, proper instructions may not be available.

Practice with all of your tools and supplies can mitigate these problems, but the loss of conventional communications can still create a very dangerous situation. At the very least, you should keep a signaling mirror on hand and know which pipes in the area can be banged on to draw as much attention as possible from the outside. Learning Morse code and other simple signaling languages may also be of some help.

8. Exposure to Unexpected Toxins

toxins exposureWhen you live in an apartment building and have no access to the boiler room or other maintenance areas, then you truly have no idea how many toxic chemicals may be around you. Aside from airborne toxins and fumes, there are also ones that may seep into any water that makes its way to shower and sink faucets.

These toxins can easily cause physical symptoms as well as mental ones. You can use the guidelines above for air quality to avoid airborne toxins. If water is still available, do not drink it until you have run it through at least activated carbon and bone char filtration.

Do not simply assume that boiling water will remove chemical toxins. At best, if you boil water, the toxins will leach into the air and then wind up getting into your lungs each time you breathe.

If the toxins have heavy metals or other are not readily boiled off, then they will simply concentrate more and pose more of danger after the water is boiled. In all scenarios, boiling water should be the last step in the purification process as it is used as a means to get rid of bacteria and other pathogens.

9. Personal Mental and Emotional Faculties

Have you ever watched an action or thriller type movie or TV show and admired the bravery and resilience of the characters? Now stop and think about what real people in real situations suffer emotionally and mentally during dangerous situations.

For example, even the best trained soldiers, law enforcement officers, and medical professionals suffer from PTSD and other disorders that stem from being in a major crisis situation. Do not simply assume that you are “tough enough” or “strong enough”, etc. to get through a crisis without major changes happening to your perceptions and ability to accurately evaluate and then appropriately respond to the world around you.

At the current time, there is very little tangible information related to emotional and mental prepping for a crisis situation. Without a doubt, if testable and viable means existed, chances are soldiers, law enforcement personnel, and other people in high stress occupations around the world would already have this as part of their training.

The fact that so many do suffer from PTSD and other disorders says there is not any effective solution. As such, you will need to do some experimenting. Some modalities that may be effective, but often scoffed at by the scientific community include prayerful meditation, binaural music, self-hypnosis, reiki, and NLP training (neurolinguistics programming).

It is fair to say that once society collapses, you will find it fairly easy to look back and see where your plans were not sufficient, and what you should have done. By then, it is more than likely to be too late.

If you are bugging in and live in a city area, the best thing you can do is constantly be aware of things that you currently take for granted and make sure ou know how that all will change in a crisis scenario.

While the ten situations listed in this article are not inclusive of every problem you will face (aside from the most major ones), they do give you a starting point for fine tuning your bug in plans.

San Bernardino: Why Gun Control Laws Don’t Work

Gun lawsI hate to say it, but mass shootings are becoming much more common than any of us would like. It doesn’t seem like there’s going to be any reduction in them either; especially with radical jihadists being allowed into the country by every means possible. The war is becoming real and it’s happening in our streets, in our office buildings and in our schools.

While each event is individual in its execution, the events surrounding them are becoming as predictable as a grade B movie. While not all are, Muslims predictably carry many of them out, although the administration and the media won’t admit it.

Many of them predictably happen in gun-free zones. The left predictably blames conservatives, especially the NRA, and Obama predictably calls for more gun control. The same story plays over and over again; while Obama and the PC police prevent the truth from coming out and the real issues from being dealt with.

The San Bernardino Shooting Follows the Script

The latest shooting on December 2nd, in San Bernardino follows the script, with its own special twists thrown in. I remember that I first heard about it through a Facebook posting on “breaking news” from one of the news outlets I follow.

At the time, which was less than an hour after the event happened, little was known. But that didn’t prevent liberal reporters from already jumping to conclusions. I must admit, I jumped to my own as well, thinking that the perpetrators were probably Muslims.

Any time an event like this happens, details are sketchy at the beginning. It takes time for the police to figure out what happened and for the true story to be told. That’s why liberals have to act so quickly. They have to get their version of the story embedded in the minds of the sheeple before the truth comes out. Otherwise, they won’t get to spin it the way they want.

So, along with that very first report I heard about how the mainstream media was saying that the event was carried out by right-wing extremists and blaming the NRA for blocking gun control measures. There were even a series of tweets following that same vein and castigating law-abiding citizens who supported the 2nd Amendment, just for opposing gun control.

San Bernardino Tweet

Well, now that more time has passed, we have a better idea of what happened. The first bit of truth that came out was the name of one of the perpetrators. It turns out that he was Syed Farook, an American citizen, who traveled to Saudi Arabia to marry his wife, who he met online. He was apparently accompanied by his wife, as well as his brother. The husband and wife were killed, when they tried to fight it out with the police.

According to Sayd’s father, he was a devout Muslim, attested to by the fact that he traveled to Saudi Arabia to marry and has recently grown out his beard, as all devout Muslim men are supposed to. Co-workers knew he was a Muslim, but were surprised that he would take such action, believing him to be a “moderate” Muslim.

The attack was a Christmas party, being held in the offices of San Bernardino’s Public Health Department, where Sayd worked as a health inspector. Co-workers said he was quiet at the party and left early. But he didn’t stay away, returning with his accomplices to rain death and destruction on the party.

Sayd and his co-conspirators showed up well prepared for their grim task, wearing tactical clothing and sporting AR-15 rifles. The way they were equipped shows that this was not a spur-of-the-moment attack.

About the only thing that might have been spontaneous was the time and place. It would have taken time to gather the necessary equipment, especially the AR-15s, which are illegal for sale in California. Sayd and his accomplices had obviously been planning such an event.

The Gun Laws Didn’t Work

This one shooting shows the futility of the progressive liberal stance on gun control. California has already enacted everything on their “common sense” wish list, yet these killers were still able to get the weapons they wanted and carry out their murderous deed. Specifically, California has laws on the books for everything on the left’s gun-control “wish list.”

  • Universal background checks
  • Magazine limits
  • Bans on standard “assault rifles”

Fourteen of Sayd’s co-workers died and another 17 are wounded, proving that those gun control measures don’t work. Yet the left doesn’t see it that way. They are still screaming out for those laws to be adopted nation-wide, regardless of their effectiveness.

You see, to the left, the law has little to do with reality. It’s all about doing something to make them feel good. If people are poor, pass laws giving them more freebees from the government. If pollution exists, create new regulations that reduce emissions. If people are getting killed enact more gun laws. It doesn’t matter if any of those laws actually do any good, they’ll feel better, because they’ve “done something” about the problem.

That’s why they villianize gun owners and the NRA. We stand in the way of them going through the motions of making themselves feel good. They don’t care about the dead; they just care about salving what little conscience they have. If that hurts others, they’ll just blame the conservatives.

As we all know, guns aren’t the problem. The very same day that the Sandy Hook shooting happened (if it really happened), a man in China entered a school and killed more children with a knife than were supposedly killed at Sandy Hook. People killed one another before guns existed and they will continue to kill one another long after guns have been replaced by something else.

A few days before this shooting, there was another, in which a mentally unstable, middle-aged white man killed a number of people. Since he hid out in a Planned Parenthood office and shot from there, the left has been talking about how he was a conservative terrorist, who was attacking Planned Parenthood. But he didn’t turn his gun on one single person in that Planned Parenthood office, he merely shot from there.

Even though that man had a history of mental illness, nobody is paying attention to that. Mental illness doesn’t match the narrative they want, so they won’t talk about it.

A few days before that, there was a mass shooting where a young black man wounded and injured several people. But that one doesn’t match the narrative either. So, while it was a serious shooting, the media isn’t bothering to cover it. Then there are the dozens of shootings that happen in Chicago every weekend, but those are mainly black-on-black crime, so they aren’t reported.

It is clear that the media is cherry-picking which shootings they will cover. They only talk about the ones that they can spin to fit their narrative. Each time, they salivate at the possibility that it really was a right-wing supremist nut job that did the shooting, so that they can justify themselves in blaming all gun violence on those of us on the right. But it just doesn’t happen.

As Texas Senator and Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz recently stated, violent crimes are mostly propagated by liberals, more specifically, by Democrats. They keep feeding the killing machine, creating gun-free zones, trying to take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens and pampering the criminals.

Video first seen on Fox News

As crazy as it seems, these people actually think that taking guns out of the hands of the innocent is going to reduce crime. Oh, it might eliminate the occasional accidental shooting, I’ll give them that. It might even eliminate the tragic results of a drunken fight, when some fool goes into a bar with a gun (usually illegal, even if you have a concealed carry permit). But that’s not what I’m talking about. They actually think that taking guns out of the hands of the honest people will convince the criminals to give up theirs.

Senator Feinstein actually said that on the floor of the Senate. She said that once honest people give up their guns, criminals will do so as well, calling that “human nature.” Obviously, the Senator has no idea of what human nature really is. A lion won’t give up its teeth if the antelope give up their horns and a criminal won’t give up their guns if the rest of us give up ours.

Actually, I think what these liberals want is to repeal the physical laws that allow firearms to work. That’s about the only way that you’re going to get guns out of the hands of the criminals. But as Cain proved, about six thousand years ago, you don’t need a gun to kill your brother.

Murder is bound up in the heart of man, just like adultery, stealing, lying and anything else you can call evil. Unless and until we can get rid of that, we will need our guns. As long as there is a way for criminals to get their hands on guns, criminals will use them. No law will stop them, just like no law ever written has stopped them from committing any other crime.

Of course, if their true goal is to make us subservient, gun control makes sense. Likewise, if they are trying to help the jihadists, by taking away our ability to defend ourselves. In that regard, gun control can be seen as treason, as it truly aids and abets our enemies, allowing them to conquer the American culture and force us to convert to Islam.

I think I’ll keep mine, no matter what they say.

The Active Shooter: Staying Alive

The Active Shooter: Staying Alive

It’s hard to read the news without seeing reports of the latest shooting by terrorists or the deranged and disgruntled. Few believe that they could possibly wind up in the crosshairs of a gunman’s sight, but it can happen anytime, anywhere. What would be your response?

The natural response for most people is not to do anything. You’ve heard me talk about “normalcy bias” before. That’s the tendency for people to believe everything follows a pattern and that the day will proceed normally; they’re...

Weapons and Threats Preppers Will Face

Written by Chris Taylor on The Prepper Journal.

Body armor can protect you against a multitude of threats preppers will face, and is well-known for its versatility. Vests are increasingly accessible, and their size and weight are being reduced all the time. This means that protection can be worn comfortably in a variety of situations for extended periods. However, it can be difficult […]

How to make a Buddy Burner: Project from “Preppers Survival Hacks”

By Amy Barker

I recently got the book Preppers Survival Hacks: 50 DIY Projects for Lifesaving Gear, Gadgets, and Kits by Jim Cobb. I’ve decided to do a few of the projects every few weeks and document my experiences.

For the first project, I decided to make a Buddy Burner. In order to do this, I also followed the instructions for melting wax. When I go to yard sales or thrift stores I am always on the lookout for old candles, which I can usually find for pennies. I managed to score this whole box at a yard sale this summer for less than a dollar.
Picture

To melt the wax I use a metal coffee can and break the candles into it. Since I am home all day and heat exclusively with wood, I put the can on my woodstove until the wax melts. When doing this
over open flame definitely use the double boiler method, wax can get hot enough to catch fire!

Picture

I followed the instructions for the Buddy Burner using a cat food tin. Since we recently moved, we have plenty of cardboard around. Cutting the strips was quick and easy. I filled the tin with the cardboard strips and then filled the whole thing with wax as instructed.

While I had all this melted wax, I decided to also make some Egg Carton Fire Starters. My partner works in the restaurant industry and brings home huge, restaurant sized egg cartons. If you know anyone in the restaurant industry, see if they can bring some home. A lot of places just recycle them, or throw them away, and they are huge!

I’ve asked my family to save their dryer lint for me, as I usually line dry my clothes and don’t always have a lot of lint. I really have had any issues with the lint being a mix of natural and synthetic fabrics. I’ve noticed no smell  and no issues otherwise.

Picture

These fire starters work just great. They definitely work as well as store bought fire starters and they save a ton of money over the store bought ones. They burn for a long time, definitely long enough to get a good fire going. They are rather heavy, so I will be using them for fires in the wood stoves, as opposed to taking them camping with me.

These are the the first of many projects I’ve tried from this excellent book. Many of the projects are quick and easy, and safe to do with children. It’s a great way to get the children in your life involved! The projects  are also well suited for people who enjoy camping, backpacking and hiking, and I will be using many of these ideas when the weather is better and I get out there backpacking again.
In my next entry, I’ll be sharing the results of testing the Buddy Burner in an outdoor experience. I’ll also be making a mini Buddy Burner, out of a smaller tin, to see if there is any difference in cooking time of things. I will be making a Hobo Stove, Cotton Pad Fire Starters and an Altoids Tin Candle. I welcome any feedback, and hope you have found this interesting!
