Defend Your Home: 8 Tips to Answer Your Door Safely

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

According to statistics, the average number of property crimes committed in the United States from 1999 to 2015 was about 1,800. However, it might surprise you to know that California alone has had more than 1 million property crimes reported each year from 1999 to 2015. In fact, there are several states that experience above-average property crime rates annually:

  • Texas – All-time high is 1.02M in 2003, all-time low is 778K in 2005
  • Florida – All-time high is 809K in 1999, all-time low is 570K in 2005
  • New York – All-time high is 490K in 1999, all-time low is 318K in 2005
  • Georgia – All-time high is 389K in 2008, all-time low is 309K in 2005

As we can see from the report, the latest data available, it is true that property crime rates have been subsiding over the years. Vermont currently has the lowest in the U.S, clocking in at only 8.81K in 2005. But that doesn’t mean that we should let our guard down, as these numbers are still very high compared to the property crime rates in other first-world countries such as Switzerland, Iceland, and Japan.

If you live in any of the hotspot areas listed above, it would be wise to consider the safety of your property and loved ones (if you share a home with other people). To do that, here are 8 prepper tips that you can try out which will hopefully give you a better chance of thwarting the heinous plans of any would-be house intruders.

Use Your Head

Not literally, but figuratively. One of the first things you should do when you hear a knock on the front door is to stop and think. Ask yourself the following questions: Were you expecting anyone over? Did you invite somebody, or could it perhaps be the mailman or someone dropping off a package? What time of day is it? Do people usually visit at these hours?

If you have no clue who the person at the door could possibly be, that’s the cue to start being cautious. The next step is to discover the identity of whoever knocked and determine what their reason for standing at your door is.

Increase Visibility

Now, some might reason out, “Well, I’m not expecting any visitors, so I simply won’t answer the door.” That IS a possible option and there is certainly nothing stopping you from doing that.

However, suppose your neighbor had an emergency and needed help? Wouldn’t you like to help them?  What if somebody was trying to surprise you with a gift? You need to find out who’s at the door but in a cautious and safe manner.

The solution to this is to increase your ability to see who is there. This can be done in several ways:

  • Peepholes – these can be easily installed on a door and they allow you to see what’s on the other side of the door without opening it. A peephole only goes one-way, so your visitor will not be able to spot you checking them out
  • Door Chains – these allow the door to be opened partially for the purpose of communication or passing small objects, while at the same time disallowing easy access to the house.

Door chains are rather weak, but they are not meant to prevent unauthorized entry; instead, to give you a chance to view the person while having a small measure of protection.

If this person was an ax-wielding psychopathic maniac who would stop at nothing to get in your house, well, neither a door chain nor any other locking device would have kept you safe, but will provide with with some valuable time to react.

  • Security Screen Doors – these are great because they act as an initial layer of protection aside from your main door. If this person has ill intentions towards you, he or she’ll have to hack his or her way through this door first which will give you enough time to plan your next move. The screen allows you to view and speak to anyone without any possibility of physical contact, unless they are armed with a firearm.
  • Home Surveillance – there are many types of home surveillance systems, CCTV systems, cameras, and other wonderful digital inventions that can provide external visibility and even record footage to keep as evidence. Nest (owned by Google) even has a doorbell with a camera that can talk, as does Ring! (Editor’s Note: When I googled “ring doorbell” the first three results for the search were for Google’s Nest! Remember, any device connected to your wi-fi can be hacked).

The last and final option to increase visibility may be the most obvious. It’s also the most affordable. If you have windows near the door or any other means of flanking the person to get a peek at them, by all means, please use them.

Psych Them Out

If you can’t identify the visitors and they won’t stop knocking, consider playing mind games to either intimidate them into leaving or get them to state who they are and what their business is.

Ask who is there without opening the door. There’s no guarantee their answer will be true, but at least you’ll hear the voice and know their gender.

You can also try to loudly shout, “We’re not interested!” – If they’re genuine callers, they will identify themselves and their purpose immediately. Using the word “we” also lets them know that you’re not alone in the house and they shouldn’t try to pull any funny moves.

In the event that you don’t want to talk, you can try banging or rapping loudly on your side of the door without speaking. Sometimes this action is enough to scare away would-be house thieves, solicitors, or anyone else who doesn’t have important business with you.

You can also use props to scare away possible burglars. Place a large dog bowl or a pair of over sized men’s boots next to the doormat. They’ll think twice about what they’re planning next, especially given the thought that a large, angry man or gigantic Doberman might appear at any moment.

To remove solicitors from the equation, consider posting a “no solicitation” sign on or near the front door to deter any rogue sales folk that might wander onto the premises.

The Art of Door-Opening

If you aren’t able to increase visibility or psych them out by using any of the tips above, your absolute last resort is to open the door – like a ninja! Opening the door to an unidentified person can be a risky move, but there are safe ways to do it right:

  1.  Position your foot firmly against the bottom of the door and curl back your toes to act as a sort of anchor. This will allow you to crack the door open wide enough to see who’s outside, and still be able to prevent it from being opened all the way.
  2.  Don’t stand in front of the door. The most common strategy employed by an intruder would be to push the door back right after you’ve turned the knob, which would throw you onto the floor and into an extremely vulnerable state.
  3.  Hold a portable phone to your ear when opening the door. They will not know who you are talking to and it may cause them to change their plans.
  4.  Once you’ve opened the door, ask to see their ID so you can confirm their identity.
  5.  Be wary of people with a story. It’s a common modus operandi for intruders to invent something to distract and cause you to let your guard down. If their car has broken down or they need help, offer to call 9-1-1 for them.

If you don’t know them then never leave the house for any reason, even if they ask you to come over and help them with something important. Stay calm and call the police on their behalf.

  1. f) Avoid having a false sense of security. Just because it’s broad daylight and even though the person at your door is a woman, it doesn’t necessarily mean everything’s peachy. Professional criminals know what the average Joe expects, and they’ll usually find a way to surprise you.

Remember, keep your head clear and your wits about you. Malicious people tend to prey on weakness and fear, so keep your emotions out of it.

Prepare Your Arsenal

As a prepper, using weaponry should absolutely be a last-resort method of intimidation or self-defense. Having said that, it pays to be prepared in case a visitor makes clear his/her intention to enter your house or cause harm. Have your sidearm stashed in a safe and hidden place where it can be quickly retrieved but not easily found by either the person outside or any children that you have in the house.

Be wary in discharging your firearm. You are only justified in shooting an intruder if there is a substantial threat to your life (he/she has a weapon and is threatening to kill you, for example).

Some of the best guns to carry for home defense are the Beretta 1301 Shotgun, Glock 19, Ruger GP-100, and the Ruger PC Carbine.

A safer and cheaper alternative to carrying a firearm is to purchase pepper spray or an electroshock weapon such as a Taser. These can incapacitate an opponent, allowing you to call the cops or at the very least, buy you enough time to lock yourself in a room or flee through a back door. (Editor’s Note: Only if your are faced with a single assailant).

Having a large family dog at home for security or protection is also a fine idea. The German Shepherd, Boxer, Rottweiler, Great Dane, or Doberman Pinscher are all breeds that excel at guard duty. They are loyal animals that are naturally protective of their owners. Their loud bark can sometimes be intimidating enough to scare away amateur burglars.

Reinforce the Door

Sometimes, prevention is better than cure. There are ways that you can reduce the likelihood of a home invasion taking place, such as reinforcing the front door. Doing this will discourage criminals from choosing you as the victim and will also make it a lot harder to actually get inside if they decide to do so.

Some extra-fortified door upgrades to consider are using larger hinges or adding an extra hinge, upgrading old locks, installing a peephole and slide chains, and putting one or more deadbolts in place. Deadbolts that are keyed on both sides are recommended. Install all deadbolts and lock with the longest screws you can find. Door framing is more decor than substance so sinking those screws into the studs framing the door is a great improvement in your security.

If you have a larger home and feel unsafe due to the multiple exit/entry points, start by reviewing alarm systems to get a good grasp of the best security package for your home.

Also, be wary of any windows near the front door, while they increase visibility they also can be easily broken. Consider remodeling this area of your home if you feel there’s a considerable security risk.

Trust Your Instincts

As the saying goes: go with your gut. Sometimes if you feel something isn’t right, trust that feeling and don’t answer the door. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

If you are quite certain that a person intends on breaking in, call the police immediately. Don’t be afraid to be called paranoid or anything else.

Some people feel compelled to answer the door immediately as it is the societal “polite” thing to do, but don’t let this sentiment get in the way of your better judgment.

When your safety and security are at stake, caution is always more important than politeness.

Knowledge Is Power

And finally, we arrive at the most important tip of all. Don’t just read this article and keep it to yourself – share it and educate your family and friends!

Make sure each and every member of your household knows what to do in an emergency situation and how to deal with a possible home invasion. Have an escape plan in place in case things get rough. Hopefully, you will never have to use it but it’s certainly a very smart idea, and having a solution to a problem before it happens is what makes you a prepper, right?

Pepper Sprays for Preppers: What You Need to Know

Pepper spray is an excellent and under-utilized tool for self-defense in a prepper’s bag of tricks. It is also one of the only true intermediate or less-lethal force options that are easy to carry and generally effective. Pepper spray may seem like a no-brainer, point-and-squirt implement, but like everything else we as preppers are concerned with the devil is in the details. Essential qualities...

Survival Knife Options

“If nothing else, give me a knife,” the man said showing me his fixed blade knife. It was dark and terrible looking. The blade looked sharp and the knife well kept. He offered it up to me, but I thought it foolish to fondle another man’s knife. It would only make me either jealous of his or arrogant of my own.

We were standing in front of about 200 knives at PrepperCon 2018. We got on the subject of surviving the Rockies in the spring weather that we were experiencing. While the elevation and the weather could make it hard enough there were creatures like rattlesnakes in those mountains as well.

I ran into one the day after, who was generous enough to give me a warning and not a dose of his finest venom.

Beyond that, the conversation got me thinking. A knife is not a knife is not a knife.

Honest about Aesthetics

At PrepperCon, as you would imagine, I saw all manners of knives. There are a ton of knives on the market that are marketed to preppers and survivalists as well as outdoorsman. Some of these types are great additions to your kit and others are just something that you like having.

I have no problem with people buying crazy knives that latch to your forearm and have numerous protruding blades. All I can say is, don’t take that thing into the woods and expect to split wood and carve with it.

Some knives are simpler and some are works of art but might not fit the bill for a survival blade either. I wanted to take this time to go over some types of survival knife blades and how they affect survival. Some are certainly better than others.

Two-Sided Spear Point

The two-sided spear point is not something you see often when seeking out survival knives. That is for good reason. While these knife blades are good for fighting the two-sided blade is more likely to hurt you than help you in survival tasks. You will invariably wind up with one side that is blunted and one that is sharper.

The very worst aspect of this style of knife blade is that the risk for injury with these double-edged weapons is very high. If you are in a real survival situation a minor cut from a dirty blade is something to concern yourself with. Infection and that could be a big problem

Where a two-sided spear point would come in very handy is, well, in affixing it to create a spear for survival hunting.

Tanto

Another fighting knife blade, essentially, the tanto is a better option than the two-sided spear point in terms of survival. The thickness and the strength of the tanto is what makes it stand out in survival. It also has a flat edge which is vital for a survival knife.

One of my biggest pet peeves regarding the tanto is the sharpening of the blade. Its not hard at home with a good stone but it’s a dual edged blade that I just don’t want to deal with in a survival scenario.

Of course, the tanto is a looker. There may be no knife as beautiful to look at as a quality made Damascus style tanto blade. Because these are such lookers many people pick them up. I will be honest, its not the worst blade to have on hand in a survival situation.

Clip Point or Bowie Knife

We have all seen those massive Bowie knives like something out of the movie Crocodile Dundee. Look, I get it, a big knife can make some things better. In a survival situation it could also be used as a deterrent.  There is real value in that.

Still, the clip point or bowie knife can pose some great benefits in survival as well as some serious weak points. I think this blade style comes down to your survival philosophy. Are traveling tool heavy or are you forcing your knife to bear the weight?

The clip point can be magic for things like processing animals or carving tasks. It can also snap off if you apply too much pressure. I wouldn’t be heart broken to find myself in the woods with a clip point knife, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Drop Point Blades

For me, and many others, there is nothing like a nice exaggerated drop point blade for survival. The drop point blade is one long sloping blade that ends in a point at the top of the spine on the knife. The other benefit is the flat back of the drop point blade. There is no curve like in a clip point.

Now, there are levels to everything and if you want to maximize the drop point blade, look for the following:

  • Thick spine that offers a 90 degree edge

This is great for a number of tasks like shredding fibers for tinder and sparking your ferro rod.

  • Wide and thick blade

You may as a lot of your blade and I have seen knives snap. That is a tough situation that you do not want to find yourself in. Instead, look to nice thick blade. This wide curve also helps when skinning animals or fish.

  • Comfortable handle

The amount of time you use your knife comes down to how easy you can access it and what it feels like in your hands. Choose a knife with a well made handle. Look into G10 grips if you do not want cheap plastics or if you do not favor a wooden handle.

Your Next Choice for a Survival Knife

Now that you are armed with this knowledge you can start your own search for the best survival knife for you. Remember, this article is about finding the best knife for you and not for me. Your knife should be about accomplishing the tasks that you need it to, not satisfying the ego of the survivalist’s community.

Will it be a tanto blade with that great look and strength, will it be the big old bowie knife or will you go the route of most survivalists and grab a drop point blade that is built for bushcraft and wilderness survival? Enjoy the hunt and find something great. Feel free to leave comments below if you find something exceptional. Let us know about it!

Let Them Eat Cake

Written by Wild Bill on The Prepper Journal.

As Preppers we must keep up with the events that will affect our lives and one in England is the icing on the cake. The spreading of the gooey, sickeningly sweet sugar coating over a real problem has once again been applied with the strokes of a government so clueless as to punish with a broad stroke its law abiding subjects as opposed to fix the fundamental problem which they themselves cooked up.

Okay, the puns stop NOW, but such is the blind ambition of people smarter that the rest of us who are callous in their application of solutions that do more harm than good and veiled as “in the public good.” What was an empire founded by the sword, one where the sun once never set, is now a land where the second weapon of choice, and a valuable EDC staple, knives, are also illegal in most of their forms.

The Government of England has issued a new decree/law on knives and we all as Preppers  need to read and understand this law, even if we don’t live in England. The link, thankfully, is direct and to the point, as opposed to any similar policies that would/will come out of the American Government. The last line is the one that I label as the most sinister thing I have read in a while – “A court will decide if you’ve got a good reason to carry a knife or a weapon if you’re charged with carrying it illegally.”

As a subject of the British government you can no longer order knives on-line.

This article is from a related website posted back in April of this year in response to a decree from the current Lord Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan on knives and the restriction, again, on his law abiding subjects, because his minions having lost all semblance of lawful control of the city of 8.7 million (known) people – by comparison NYC has 8.5 million (known) residents.

This same Mayor stated “…he believes the threat of terror attacks are “part and parcel of living in a big city” and encouraged Londoners to be vigilant to combat dangers..” But now they can only carry harsh words to “combat dangers” but, no wait,  they imprison people for saying hateful things, so forget harsh language: The Communications Act of 2003 defines illegal communication as “using public electronic communications network in order to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety”. Breaking the law carries a six-month prison term or fine of up to £5,000. The media must have an exclusion to the law. So no texts, no instant messages, no emails, no pics on Instagram, no comments on Facebook that can be deemed offensive by the thought police. Another law that has far more reaching “unintended consequences”, or were they the actual intent?

It is rumored that when Tomas de Torquemada was asked during the Spanish Inquisition what is “heresy against the church” his reply was “it is whatever I say it is.” And so, again, we see history repeating itself, lessons NOT learned.

I chose the icing spreader as it almost fits the official definition in England of an acceptable knife, it is too long actually and any mods – filling an edge to be sharper, will most certainly get you a trip to a London jail. And, of course, to take the lunacy further, using an icing spreader and spreading icing on someone trying to attack you, your family, friends, neighbors or strangers right in front of you is also a form of assault and will also get you a  ride to jail.

So NEVER use this as a weapon, even in self-defense. After all they may already have diabetes, so this would be accessory to murder, even if they die years later. Far fetched? Have I gone off the deep end more so than this policy and its application to fix a problem that is being used to further disarm the subjects of the British government? In America you are still free to decide that for yourselves.

Some British can Still Own Guns

“Members of the public may own sporting rifles and shotguns, subject to licensing, but handguns were effectively banned after the Dunblane school massacre in 1996 with the exception of Northern Ireland. Dunblane was the UK’s first and only school shooting.” A horrible act and reading the link is very hard. Finding a link that presented a factual account was much harder. On this side of the pond we are all too aware of these tragedies. We are also very aware of how they are exploited, how the facts are spun and twisted to meet the agenda as opposed to the facts simply being presented and supported by evidence.

The origins of our 2A Rights can be directly traced to the policies of authoritarian British Governments and it appears they are circling back to that form of government again, or, they are exploiting the tragedies they themselves have inflicted upon their subjects.

My real point here is that we hear about such policies on the news, in passing and we tend not to look under the covers. Juggling our own lives and needs and daily dramas is keeping us engaged, and that is the devils playground. As Preppers we should always expose information to the light of day and strive to understand the driving forces behind things. And at the end of this chain, if you follow it back to its origins, there is a root cause – the invasion of Europe by an immigrant population that will keep its facilitators in power. This isn’t news to Preppers or to most people, it is just misplaced on the devils playground and THAT is when we are blindsided.

Normalcy Bias. Will You Underestimate the next Disaster?

If you have ever watched a crisis unfold, in person, or perhaps some recorded footage, you have probably noticed a few people involved in the proceedings acting very nonplussed about the whole affair, even if they are moments or millimeters from death. You ever wonder why? Do they have ice water in their veins? Do they just not care, or do they not comprehend the severity of the situation, plain...

How To Raise Rabbits From A to Z

Rabbits are one of the best survival livestock options. They are far less expensive to buy and keep than nearly any other meat source – and of course reproduce rapidly. You don’t need much space at all to keep even a fairly large colony of rabbits, making them an ideal source for a prepper who lives on only a small parcel of land or in the suburbs. With just a little bit of training and not...

Identify These 5 Common Physical Injuries Before Giving First Aid

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editors Note: A guest contribution from Caitlyn Bell to The Prepper Journal. With Summer here in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern, outdoor activities change and with that change comes the minor injuries we seldom are lucky enough to avoidAs always, if you have information for Preppers that you would like to share and be entered into the Prepper Writing Contest with a chance to win one of three Amazon Gift Cards  with the top prize being a $300 card to purchase your own prepping supplies, then enter today!

As everyone knows, especially Preppers, injuries are a part of life!

Adventure and injuries are two sides off the same coin and what we mean, you will understand right after your first trip. They say when you begin with something new, you will fall but what matters is how you get up again and move ahead with greater courage! The same thing implies to adventure sports and outings. And well! What is a trip good for if you do not have marks to support the telling of your fantastic time and exemplary courage! Injuries can happen anywhere, anytime, during any circumstance and often you really cannot do much about it. You may cut your hand from the very slicer which you use everyday twice in the kitchen! But let’s keep ourselves focused on one aspect and that is the amazing, full of fun trips that we make to places which are naturally difficult to get to in order to satiate our adventurous soul!

Adventure trips are not just confined to trekking. Canoeing, river rafting, scuba diving, deep sea diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing and many more such activities happen all around the globe that fall under the category of adventure sports. If at times you choose to spend some time living in camps and employ the natural ways of sustenance, that is also an audacious endeavor of another kind. Whether you are going out for a solo trip or a group adventure, you are always suggested to make your preparations well and always carry a survival kit with you. This kit must always contain a hunting knife along with other essentials.

You must also necessarily carry a first aid box with you that includes-

  • the major medicines like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, paracetamol, cough syrup,
  • thermometer
  • pain relief spray,
  • bandages
  • Cotton and scissors
  • Oral antihistamine
  • antiseptics,
  • hand sanitizer,
  • ice packs,
  • alcohol wipes,
  • non latex gloves
  • 1% hydrocortisone cream
  • A triple antibiotic ointment

These are a compulsion for the first aid along with any other ointment that you may remember. First aid is the first help that you can provide to your team member before you get any professional medical help so it needs to be complete and precise. But, if ever such a situation arises, you must not be in a hurry to perform first aid. Before applying any ointment, make sure you detect the issue properly and understand what kind of help is required.

Let us learn about some of the basic medical conditions that need to be identified properly first before administering first aid.

Cuts and scrape – if you are out on a trip that involves a lot of physical activity, then there will occur many instances when you will get cuts on your body parts, maybe on hands or on legs. Most of the times you will not even know how and when you got a cut. You only realize it later on when all of a sudden you feel a slight pain or burning sensation on your hand or leg! It is the most difficult to treat these cuts because you do not know the source. If you could find a cut immediately after it was administered, you know the source and you can easily the medicine that should be applied. It is crucial to deal with cuts carefully as they are prone to develop an infection which can prove to be much more harmful.

Burns – campfires are one of the most fun element of a camping adventure. Sitting around the fire in blankets with the right kind of music, food and people, can become of the most memorable part of your trip. But what if a member meets with an accident with the fire and encounters burns on the body. Not only this, in more severe conditions, when you choose to cook on your own while on a trek or in a camp, things are more complicated. It is not just fire that can cause burns! You may spill hot water accidentally or oil or any other mishap may happen. During any burns condition, you must know the source so as to give proper treatment. Not all the times you can use the same way to cure a burn and it is also not easy to understand the degree of the burns.

Swelling in limbs – this is a very frequent and common problem which can occur with anyone during a trek. There are a myriad reasons for swelling. At times, swelling can happen due to excessive water retention, maybe due to fatigue, some inflammation may also be a reason for this or at times an insect bite which may have worsen can also be a reason of swelling. If you are already suffering from a joint problem, then also you may suffer from swelling. You see, there are so many reasons for one medical condition. In case your legs swell while you are on a trip, then before taking any first aid help, it is important for you to figure out what is the actual reason of the swelling in the limbs. All the above reasons have different ways to be treated so it is imperative to make sure of the cause of swelling first.

Insect/bug bites – it is impossible to avoid these. Trekking or camping in the open means you are a free treat for insects and bugs. Generally there are swamps of bugs and insects and there are different kinds of these which can sting anytime and you not even get to know immediately until and unless you happen to see a red mark or a blister out of nowhere. Most of the times these small creatures are poisonous or maybe the carriers of harmful diseases so it is better to be loaded with repellent creams for a healthy trip.

Fractures – honestly, one must be scared of these. If something as serious as a fracture happens, you must try to get professional help at the earliest. But most of the times, in case of a hairline fracture, you are not even sure if there is a fracture at all. If you experience immense pain or experience difficulty in moving any particular part of the body, you must first try and confirm if there is at all a fracture or not before giving first aid. You might not always know the exact reason of the fracture and the actual location of the fracture.
