The Basic List For Your EMP Survival

EMP survivalAs you look around, you are aware that electricity and electronic devices have made permanent changes in how we all live. It is one thing to say you can do without electricity, and then actually be able to achieve that goal.

In fact, many people that lose access to electricity for one reason or another either wind up extremely sick or dead in a matter of weeks. No matter whether they are unable to refrigerate foods or keep the house warm, surviving without electricity may not be as easy as it looks.

Since an EMP will disrupt both electrical power distribution and ruin devices that use it, the wise prepper will do everything possible to prepare for an EMP blast. If you don’t know where to start, here are a few simple things to do to prepare for something that many experts believe will be the main focus of an enemy attack.

Learn about Passive Heating

Since keeping your home warm or cool (depending on the season) tends to cost a lot of energy, this will be one place where you need to focus a good bit of attention. There are a number of “passive” unexpensive methods to keep your home warm or cool, and they can cut your heating bill by as much as 50 – 75% even on regular times.

  • Add at least one foot of R-22 insulation to the walls (fiberglass, paper backed insulation is much cheaper than foam based insulation boards). Insulate the attic and under the roof. Insulate floors and add heavy carpets, install carpet hangings on the walls or other decorations that will seal off the rooms.
  • Install tight fitting windows that will allow heat from the sun through in the winter. As long as you do not have furniture in the room that will fade in the sunlight, it is fine to choose windows that will let the maximum amount of light and heat in.
  • Put plastic over the windows to help keep heat from escaping the room. No matter how new or tight your windows may be, the seals may become brittle and the frames will lose their tight fit as the house settles.
  • Install storm doors that will have a tighter fit than regular house doors.
  • Rebuild door frames, hinge areas, and window areas so that they do not allow air in or out, and keep a good supply of newspaper on hand to place in doors to help prevent cold air from getting in.
  • Do not cover over house ventilation zones when insulating. No matter how much you may want to save on heating bills, it will do you no good if mold, fungi, and mildew build up in the walls because there is not enough air circulating.
  • Make sure the roof and shingles are in good repair. Always remember that heat rises, therefore the roof will always be prime escape point for heat that you may be trying to conserve. If you routinely close off the attic or other upstairs floors, then feel free to put plastic down on the floors in order to form a heat barrier.
  • Choose and practice living in one room that has been properly weather proofed, and maintain a reasonable temperature with very few, if any heat resources.
  • Don’t forget that candles, kerosene stoves, wood stoves, propane stoves and others all consume oxygen. Don’t create a completely airtight seal in the room because carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels can build up to lethal levels very quickly.
  • Use black and white to your advantage: black and dark colors absorb radiant energy while white and light colors reflect it. Carpets, furniture drapes, and many other internal objects can become heat retainers or reflectors if you pay attention to this one small factor alone.
  • Keep a large aquarium in the room. As strange as it sounds, water is one of the best insulators on Earth. It absorbs heat well and can also help keep a warmer, less dry temperature in any room that features an aquarium.

Passive heating and cooling methods can give you approximately 20 degrees worth of stabilization and also substantially cut your power bills at the same time. Just be sure to use good quality materials and do what you can to get the best prices on installation and labor.

Where Do You Get Your Food From?

Stockpiling food will not do much beyond helping you get past a short term crisis. Unless you have a year’s worth of food stored away and already eat enough to ensure fresh rotation, it is not likely that stockpiling will be a viable answer. And if you stockpile and others find out, they come to your home and try to take your food.

There are two ways that you can go about stockpiling. First, you can take a minimalist approach and only store 2-3 weeks’ worth of food. As long as you have a viable means of producing food, don’t take a chance of getting hit by looters or anyone else that might want to steal from you.

Second, the easiest if not most effective way to prepare for an EMP based food shortage may well be to store away large quantities of food for one year survival. Start off by purchasing airtight bins that will hold at least 30 gallons, and fill one bin with enough food to last for one month. The bin should include:

  • Foods that will last for one year or more (dried and canned foods will work much better than frozen foods or ones that do not have a very long shelf life).
  • Foods that are nutritionally balanced. Check serving amounts and make sure that you also meet your daily caloric needs.
  • Printed instructions for how to prepare each food.

To find out if your bin system will work, see if you can make it one month by eating only the foods in the bin and cooking only with resources that you will be using after an EMP has occurred.

hydroponicsYou may have to tweak the foods you choose to store away in order to develop a nutritious menu that will meet all your needs. Once you arrive at the proper ingredients for your bin, repeat the formula for at least 11 more bins, and this will give you a year’s worth of food that can be stored even in a medium to large sized apartment.

Do not forget that some factors (such as radiation exposure, damage to the packages, and looting) can deprive you of your stores. You must also have some kind of plan in place for what you will do when your stored food supplies run out.

As time passes, you’ll find harder to obtain food in rural areas, especially as survivors move from the cities and over hunt, over fish, and over tax the soil. Excess harvesting will also take a toll on wild plants.

Overall, as a beginner, you may actually be better served by focusing on intensive container gardening. Not only will you be able to triple or quadruple normal production amounts, container gardening also forms an excellent basis for setting up a hydroponics system. You can also grow container gardens in just about any location, including inner city apartments and other areas where land and other resources may not be available.

How to Cook without Electricity

Propane stoves can be expensive, and eventually you will run out of fuel, but there are still a number of alternatives you can use to cook meals:

  • A candle heater using flower pots. They can be used for cooking and for heating a room.
  • A solar cooker that can be used outdoors or indoors
  • A passive solar heater using tin cans, glass, and a wooden frame, and it can act as a heating source for one room or many depending on how you arrange the pipes.

If you have a bit of land around you or a wooded area, there are devices that you can use to help with cooking outdoors:

  • A tin can rocket stove – It’s fairly easy device to build from tin cans. It can be used to burn wood, or even used with candles. The rocket stove is usually used in outdoor settings, however you may use it indoors if you have sufficient ventilation.
  • A cinder block stove – You can create a reasonably durable and reliable stove using just four cinder blocks. This is ideal for cooking outdoors since it provides a decent working surface.
  • Start a compost pile near your home – Compost piles generate a good bit of heat, it only takes a few coils of non-flammable piping to transport that heat indoors. If you circulate water through the pipes, add water carrying radiators in each room to disperse the heat.
  • Underground stoves – These can be as simple as pits dug into the ground, or they can integrate tin can rocket stoves into the design. If you have enough wood or other materials, these stoves are easy to build and may be more efficient than above ground camp fires.

campfireThese outdoor stoves are easy to build, durable, and can be used with different kind of fuel (twigs, chopped up bits of wood, dried leaves, grass, dung, or anything else that is flammable). Keep supplies on hand to make it easier to start a fire: magnifying lens, tea lights, dried pine cone, or waterproof matches and tinder cloth. You can make the latter using a method similar to making charcoal.

If you live in a city, then you have seen homeless people and are aware of the methods they use to keep warm and cook any food they may find. Burn barrels or any other resource that may be set up by others in your neighborhood. Take the time now to get to know your neighbors so that in a crisis, you have the chance of moving among them safely.

Refrigeration and Keeping Cool

In time of need, you are sure to realize that any ice in your freezer will melt, and then you will not be able to make more using conventional means. If you have a solar cooker, you can make ice during the dark, or night time hours.

For the sake of simplicity, you can start off with a cardboard solar cooker, which can also be used for refrigeration during the night hours. In a survival situation, you will still need to switch to ice or some other method during the day hours.

There are some other simple things you can do to keep foods and medicines cool:

  • Bury foods in the earth
  • Use a zeer pot, which is basically 2 clay pots separated by wet sand. As the water evaporates, it will remove heat from the center of the pot.
  • Add table salt to ice in your freezer or a sealed container.
  • Consider refrigerators and freezers that run on propane or other alternative fuels

How to Obtain Purified Water

No matter whether you are accustomed to filtered water from the tap or rely on bottled water, there is bound to be a shortage of clean water after an EMP blast. You need a reliable plan for obtaining, conserving, and purifying water. If you are stuck in the city, it take much more time before you can get into a location where water be more available.

Here’s what you can do now for a better water management and also prepare for an EMP:

  • Find out how much water you are using each day.
  • Make note of the flow rate on all shower heads and faucets.
  • Replace shower heads with more water efficient options.
  • Place at least one ½ gallon jug in the toilet filled with water, to reduce the amount of water being used.
  • Look at all pipes, and any other places where the water you pay for may be leaking

Once you have learned to conserve water, you will turn your attention to storage and collection. There are five basic ways to obtain water during an EMP crisis:

  • Capture precipitation such as rain or snow in a bucket.
  • If you have access to the outdoors, learn how to collect water vapor that rises from the soil.
  • Pull water from the air by using table salt or other desiccants
  • If you have access to a well, install a hand pump to draw water from it.
  • Obtain water from a nearby pond or other source of water, and you can use an Archimedes Screw or a ram pump to draw the water

If you have to survive an EMP caused by a nuclear event, any water that you collect may not be suitable to drink even after you purify it using bleach, tablets, or some other form of chemical filtration.

The simplest way to cover all your basis in an EMP (get rid of bacteria, chemicals, and all radioactive substances except Tritium) is to distill the water. It requires heating it up to a point where it turns to steam, and then collecting the water droplets in a clean container.

Aside from using a still that require vast amounts of wood, propane, or some other fuel, you can also use a solar cooker with a plastic tent on it. If you do some experiments with plastic bottles, you’ll see how to use natural sunlight to make water evaporate faster, and then collect the clean water in a chamber away from the main heating area.

What About Your Car?

After an EMP blast occurs, you are likely to find it impossible to make use of motorbikes, cars, and other motorized vehicles. Even if they are not destroyed by the EMP, you will not be able to use them on the main roads until all of the broken down cars are removed.

And even if you fully prepare your vehicle for an EMP blast, it still may not be capable of moving over the kinds of rough terrain that you might have to navigate in the post EMP world. Use alternative forms of transport that you might want to consider: sled dogs, horses, other animals used for transport, or a rugged bike that can go over rough. A rickshaw might also be of some help.

For short distance or extreme emergency transport, skateboards and skates may be of some help. While they may seem slow, there is no question they will get you further and faster than running.

horseRemember that in a nuclear attack, it is estimated you will have about ½ hour before the radiation and compression waves catch up. You can double, or even triple you distance of travel with a skateboard or skates when compared to walking or running.

You may not think much about mobility aides unless you are disabled.

On the other hand, as the crisis unfolds, any number of problems can rob you of your mobility: injury from buildings falling apart as fires erupt as well as injuries sustained in altercations with rioters and looters.

If you choose one mobility aide, the most versatile aide is the rollating walker, which can be used just like a regular walker, or you can push the seat down and use it as a wheelchair. Even though the wheeled part is best used indoors and on smooth surfaces, it can help you get around your home in time of need.

For individuals looking for a lower budget option, a shepherd’s staff might be of some help. It can be as easily used indoors as it can rough terrain. As an added bonus, this type of staff also makes for a powerful weapon if you know how to use it.

Managing Sewage and Waste Disposal

If you live in a rural setting and have an independent leach field, then it is not likely you will need to worry about disruptions in the sewage system. Just keep some sludge removers on hand so that you can put off cleaning out the tank as long as possible.

People living in a city setting will truly have a number of problems with sewage because the municipal systems are likely to overflow and contaminate the streets, water, and just about anything else that the sewage comes into contact with. The simplest thing you can do is keep a portable composting toilet on hand to use in time of need.

Even if you avoid using municipal sewage, other people may still be dumping all kinds of things down the toilets and sink drains. Overflowing sewers will eventually back up and spew all kinds of noxious materials right into your home.

The only way to stave off this problem is to make sure all of your drains (including the toilet) are set up with shut off valves. As soon as an EMP hits, you will be well served by closing these valves so that sewage cannot get into your home.

As for the waste disposal, more than a few people think they will burn almost all of their garbage and keep their house warm at the same time. This may work for paper and wood, but not for plastics.

Start off by finding out exactly what you throw away each day and break those items into categories. Next, figure out alternative means for disposing of each waste type, or even repurpose it in a survival situation. If you have access to land, keep a few compost bins, and use it to grow houseplants that can be consumed for food or medicinal needs.

Personal Safety

If you have been following the news about terrorist attacks in Paris, then you may also be thinking a bit more about how you will manage personal safety.

Many people rely on guns for personal safety, while newer technologies are beginning to overshadow conventional guns. Considering that EMP would turn the world into a stage for anarchy, there are certain things that you should avoid for your personal defense:

  • Guns with electronic locks or biometric firing guards
  • Gun lock boxes that feature any kind of digital lock
  • Laser sights and scopes, even if they offer all kinds of advantages to shooters.

But there are many different kinds of weapons that do not require electricity, nor will they be affected by an EMP blast: knives, throwing stars, wooden staffs, swords, axes, poison darts, pen guns, poison/debilitating sprays, and just about anything with a sharp edge.

When it comes right down to personal defense training, there is no such thing as winning a fight unless you know the rules of the game. In the instance of personal defense the first rule is, and always will be situation awareness. This does not mean hyper vigilance, but knowing what to look for and how to look for it.

There are many kinds of defense training courses that you can take. Martial arts can give you plenty of moves as well as training in weapons that can be far more effective at close range than guns.

Most self-defense classes will teach you how to disarm an attacker as well as how to attack if needed. Never underestimate the value of even a few classes, because they can save your life now and also in the post EMP world.

Navigation and Communication

mapIf you have a GPS in your car, rely on the radio for traffic updates, or use your cell phone to get travel directions, then you will be at a huge disadvantage when an EMP takes out all the broadcasting stations, satellite links, and other infrastructure points that deliver this information to you.

When you are trying to get out of a city, you will be challenged more by obstructions on the roads then actual navigational problems. You can still use compasses and other items to help you determine which direction to go in. You have to know where you are in the city so that you continue to move outward instead of moving deeper into it.

Be aware of the fact that people escaping cities and towns may be in the woods. Before you go tromping through an area, always be aware that nervous people may be in the woods and will not recognize that you mean them no harm.

Unless you only know how to navigate with a GPS system, you will find that it is not especially difficult to navigate after an EMP. In fact, even if you do not have a map, you can still use landmarks for navigation and other methods to help you get to a generalized location. If you would feel safer having some kind of map on hand, then choose a good quality atlas.

Also, many people preparing for an EMP crisis already know that cell phones, GPS systems, and many other electronic aides will become useless.  These very same people do not realize that there are also some very serious problems with other elements of the communications infrastructure. But there are also other things to consider:

  • Radio stations in the modern world do not always rely on full-scale transmitters.
  • If you have a radio in your home, chances are it also relies on transistors, microchips, and other components that will be destroyed during an EMP.  In fact, even if you bought a weather or emergency radio that operates on crank power, there is also every chance that it will not withstand an EMP unless it has a built in Faraday cage, or was placed in one prior to the EMP.
  • A spark gap transmitter can be built in such a way that it cannot be damaged by an EMP.  Unfortunately, it is illegal to maintain and operate one of these broad range transmitters because they can disrupt pacemakers and other sensitive electronic equipment.

If you find it difficult, if not impossible to build up small radio networks, then you should at least know about basic signaling systems that may or may not help you gain and transmit information over short distances.

These methods include smoke signals, banging on pipes, and Morse Code. Even though these signaling methods are usually used for rescue needs, they can also be used to transmit information in your local area.

Even the most basic aspects of preparing for surviving an EMP can be complicated and require some effort. In many cases, these beginning tips will also give you plenty of room to expand into more advanced topics and training.

While you are looking at this list, remember that it does not do much good to overly focus on one area of prepping at the expense of others. For example, many people today are more concerned with food, water, and guns, yet completely forget that an EMP crisis may also involve trying to navigate, and maintain a comfortable room temperature.

Preparing for all of these elements will take time, practice, and the willingness to do quite a bit of experimenting. If you get started now, you will be that much further along in the process, and hopefully more confident in  your abilities to survive an EMP and thrive in the post crisis world.

Some people have suggested that he is insane, and others say he is incompetent, but I think he is neither, he knows exactly what he is doing and by what he is doing it’s easy to see that his main goal is to bring the U.S. down to a third world status.  Obama is a Marxist pure and simple, and has done more to destroy the U.S. than any other  president in U.S. history.

If you want to find out about the real Obama, how he was raised, what he stands for and his plan for changing America then you should watch “Dreams From My Real Father: A Story of Reds and...

Preparing For Nuclear Disaster: How To Stay Informed

Nuclear BlastToday, relatively few people can even tell you whether or not a nuclear power plant is in their local region let alone the presence of missile silos, radioactive waste dumps, or other sources of nuclear materials.

You will also find that many preppers remain unaware of vital information sources that can help them evaluate personal safety.

What You Need to Know

Knowing where to look for information on man-made nuclear radiation sources is every bit as important as knowing what to do during a crisis that makes the headlines.

Online Nuclear Power Plant Monitoring Resources

If you live in the United States or Japan, you can get immediate information on almost every reactor in the country via the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center (netc.com). This is a privately owned site that gathers nuclear information from EPA monitoring sites as well as ones set up by private owners.

You can watch on a daily basis as radiation levels change as well as receive early warnings for reactors in the United States and Japan. The site aims to cover nuclear power plants around the world, and there is also a forum that you may want to join in order to learn about issues associated with nuclear power.

Web Based Disaster Information Sites

You already know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of disaster scenarios that can wreak havoc at the local level and on larger scales. Floods, earthquakes, biological threats, or nuclear hazards – one site can give you a bird’s eye view of everything going on in the world.

While the Emergency and Disaster Information Service (RSO-EDIS) does not always give a great deal of detail, there is enough information there to enable you to research headlines via Google news research links.

RSO-EDIS is also an ideal way to study patterns of scenarios as well as acquaint yourself with the fact that tragedy and chaos already happen daily on our planet. This realization can help you feel calmer and reframe your reference points away from futility and also make it easier to gather useful information about how people are surviving crisis situations even though they are not especially prepared.

As we saw in Fukushima, it is not always human intention to cause a nuclear disaster. In this case, an earthquake followed by a tsunami were well beyond human control. Massive solar flares that trigger a large scale EMP, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters can literally crush power plants, missile silos, and anything else that contains nuclear matter.

Never forget that we are just tiny humans, and no matter how awed we may be by the power of our machines, it is nothing compared to the millions of pounds in a single cloud that seems to float so effortlessly in the sky. Even though RSO-EDIS will give information after a disaster has occurred, these sites will give you clues about patterns that precede larger events:

If You Need Information on Medical Treatments

If you search only for radiation treatments associated with a nuclear crisis, you may not find much more than a few links on Potassium Iodide and a few other drugs that have side effects almost as bad as the radiation itself.

On the other hand, radiation is also a primary treatment for many malignancies. As such, medical researchers are always looking for ways to reduce the impact of radiation on healthy cells while still targeting the malignant ones.

So you will find many discrepancies about the old “story” that medical researchers avoid studying herbal remedies just because they can’t be leveraged into expensive patented drugs. In fact, you will find many good, and ongoing studies on the effects of many herbs and vitamins.

While this research is rarely, if ever discussed in relation to nuclear survival scenarios, those who study Fukushima have seen the effects of these herbs and vitamins in action.

Updates in Nuclear Technologies

nuclear reactorsWe have not yet reached a stage where nuclear fuel is used up 100% in any given reaction, nor where all possible neutrons are channeled into increasing the radiation yield.

Consider a situation where you use a standard formula to calculate how much damage will be done by a 1 kiloton Uranium bomb. Back in the 1940’s, when the yield was only 10%, the damage area and fallout zones were much smaller than damage estimates from the 90’s. Failure to remain aware of new trigger assembly designs can easily cause you to miscalculate by hundreds of miles when it comes to navigating away from a nuclear incident.

This, in turn, can have a negative impact on when you decide to emerge from a shelter as well as how far out you decide to go in search of a new place to live.

Even though governments are very secretive about the yield of newly developed bombs, you can still keep up to date on other nuclear technologies and make some estimations from there. This includes assessing new nuclear plant plans as well as medical research patents.

No matter how you look at it, even being to aim a tighter, more lethal aim of radiation at a tumor means that nuclear fuel and other resources are being better harnessed. That, in turn, means you can get some ideas about how much more of a danger newer bombs will be.

Always look to research coming out of nuclear nations other than the United States to see what you may be up against. Scientists from other nations have very different cultural and philosophical views that shape how the look at scientific and mathematical problems. What US researchers may miss, scientists in these other countries may already be incorporating into their own devices; some of which may one day cause serious harm.

Never forget the old joke about how NASA spent millions of dollars to invent an anti-gravity pen that could be used in zero gravity while the former USSR didn’t spend anything at all: they just used pencils. It is these kinds of understandings that can give you a better sense of what is coming in terms of hostile nuclear detonations.

It is not always easy to find out about research going on in other countries by simply doing a search on Google or other search engine. You will need to gain access to Google page search results for specific countries, or find out which search engines are most popular in any nation of interest. Once you reach these sites, you can use Google translate to assist with making queries, and also reading the pages that you get in response.

This can be a time consuming and frustrating task, however you may uncover all kinds of interesting things. Once you get series of useful keywords or concepts, you can try feeding those back into your native language search engine to see what is going on closer to home.

The Information You Should Keep On Hand

As soon as you find out about a nuclear incident, you should know what to do and how to do it without further instruction. Because nuclear radiation and fallout zones are extremely unpredictable, you need to have a good bit of information either memorized or on hand in printed form.

The most important information includes:

  • Wind direction in your local area and shifting patterns for each season. Keep a notebook of your observations for the current season and an overall set of averages, and also a small non-detailed map with topographical and landmark information that also shows average fallout predictions. If you notice significant changes in wind trend from the averages, you will need to be able to extrapolate where the fallout bands will most likely occur.
  • Precipitation patterns – keep a notebook similar to the one for wind directions. This time, you will be correlating precipitation patterns to predicted fallout zones.
  • Temperatures – keep a notebook similar to the one for wind and precipitation patterns.
  • Incoming and outgoing tides – this notebook is especially important if you are planning to bug out in a coastal area or you will be near rivers, or any other body of water that has a noticeable tidal shift.
  • A quick guide to at least 10 foods and other natural remedies for radiation sickness. This should include how to grow the remedies of choice as well as how to prepare them.
  • Information on anti-oxidants and natural cancer inhibitors that you can grow easily.
  • Detailed maps of any area that you may have to leave or get into after a nuclear incident. Don’t just rely on a current atlas, look to older ones that may show roads currently out of repair, or places where you can travel more easily or unnoticed.
  • Basic information about how nuclear chain reactions occur and how to stop them. Now is the time to demand more information from nuclear power plants, medical facilities, and militaries. Never forget that hackers and espionage experts more than likely already have information that your hard earned tax dollars paid to develop, and then protect from people like them.

Do not settle for being the last to know just because something is marked “classified”. In a sense, this situation is just like rampant crime in areas where gun control is strictest. Ultimately, it is the common people in a crisis that solve the problem, not those who are “privy” to special equipment or information.

As far-fetched as it may seem, even a high school dropout or someone with very little scholarly information may be the only person that can stop a runaway nuclear reaction PROVIDED, if he or she recognizes what is going on and has some basic information to work with.

Communications Are Dead. How to Replace Them?

radioDuring a nuclear crisis, you can expect any number of responses from the government. While Japan made every effort to save civilian lives during the Fukushima incident, it is not clear what a nation at war will do in order to preserve as many resources as possible for the elites and any military personnel that can viably protect them.

You may well want to be able to communicate directly with other survivors as opposed to simply believing what you hear on radio or via other localized news dispersal methods. As you may already be learning from assessing media spin, you get an entirely different story when you actually talk to people that witness a situation or are directly involved in it.

Establish private band radio links, small scale transmitters and receiver systems, and telegraph based communication methods. Use anything you can to create a communications chain and code system that will enable you to get the truth about what is really happening in any given area. Not only will this save you countless hours of frustration, it can help you know which areas are best to travel to in a time of need.

There is no question that the internet offers an enormous amount of useful information that will make it much easier to survive a nuclear crisis. Unfortunately, once an EMP hits, or other nuclear blasts disable local internet structures, all of the information you take for granted will be gone.

Here are some ways that you can get information without using computers, and also stay in contact with people in the local region and within a few hundred miles:

  1. Local News via Radio and Public Address Systems

Make sure that all radios in your survival kit can receive AM and FM bands. The most important radio in your kit will actually be DIY “foxhole radio”. This radio is made from little more than a razor blade and graphite from a lead pencil.

Even though these radios are hard to tune and not very strong, they may still pick up emergency broadcasts that will give you the exact coordinates of a nuclear incident.

Next, you should keep a crank radio on hand. These radios work on static electricity and can pull in stations further away from your location. Try to find a radio that is certified EMP proof or one that does not use transistors or integrated circuits.

  1. Community Based Sirens

If you give it some thought, you may realize that you haven’t heard a civilian nuclear threat siren in decades. Sadly, the vast majority of people would not recognize these sirens let alone know what to do if one sounded.

In fact, some areas may not even have sirens that can sound out across several miles. It is very important to find out if your city or town has a siren system up and ready for action. In some situations, you may be told that all emergency broadcasts are now done through radio and TV.

In an age where all TV signals, and many radio signals are delivered via cable (which in turn comes from satellite and fiber optic feeds), vital warnings will never reach the public. That’s why you should go to town board meetings and city planning meetings. Demand placement of sirens that do not rely on new technologies that can be wiped out in an EMP blast.

You should also demand at least 2 community wide drills for year so that people know what to do and what to look for. Considering how relatively feeble and non-detailed the information source actually is, education and practice are truly the only ways to make it work.

  1. Private Band Transmitter and Receiver Systems

Even though large scale spark gap transmitters are illegal (because they interfere with other transmission types) they are one of the few transmitter systems that will survive an EMP blast and also many other crisis situations. As such, you should at least learn how to build them, and keep sufficient materials do so in a time of need.

Once a crisis hits, many laws that you are currently bound by will be gone. This is one situation where necessity will demand building spark gap transmitters that can help you contact other survivors and get better information about what is going on. You can pair this transmitter type with Morse Code equipment and transmit messages for miles on end.

Morse Code

  1. Preset Signals

Basically, you would need to create a system of preset signals among preppers that would alert others to a situation. In this case, it would be the absence of a signal that alerts others that something is interfering with routine transmission.

Consider a situation where you are in daily contact with someone. If they suddenly do not call one day or send an email, you will be wondering what happened. In this scenario, if a whole group of people in a local area suddenly fail to transmit, then you know something is wrong.

Even if you don’t know specifics, it may still be possible to contact trustworthy people in a nearby locality to find out what is going on. From there, you can make arrangements as needed for whatever may be coming to your area.

  1. Direct Carriers of Information

Consider a situation where an EMP air based nuclear blast takes out all cell phones and other communication systems. Even though you may suspect that you need to head for shelter immediately, others around you may be completely off guard. What is worse, even if you try to tell them that there is a serious problem, they may not believe you as they stand around staring at their cell phones.

As the situation unravels, you may be one of the few to survive. How will you get the word out to loved ones and fellow preppers that may still be in safe zones?

In some cases, if you are with a group of people, it may be best for one or two people to try and get out of the area undetected. These people would basically act as messengers that deliver written or oral information to a distant site. As time consuming, dangerous, and frustrating as this method may be, you will have to use it in the absence of other means.

Right now, there are dozens of useful websites and apps that can be used to monitor all kinds of emergency situations, including ones that will provide valuable info about nuclear resources.

As you develop your own skills for detecting nuclear radiation, you will eventually be left with figuring out how to send and receive information during a crisis. While your options may be few, they are better than nothing.

Take the time now to learn what you can, store away as much information in compact form as you can, and always remember that, even in a crisis, there is strength in numbers.

Never fall into the trap of thinking you can survive alone or do without communications spanning several miles. Without advanced information about where you may need to go for safety, you will never have enough prior information to make the best possible decisions.

5 Clear Advantages of Carrying Concealed – And Why You Should if You Don’t

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

5/5 (1) Permitted in all 50 states, carrying a concealed gun is no longer a taboo topic of discussion. There are still the ones who strongly disagree with carrying, but the importance of carrying can no longer be denied. Preppers know that in a SHTF scenario, open or concealed carrying is essential for surviving. Having […]

The Risks We Prep For

Today we present another article in our non-fiction writing contest – By Georgia Boy

I see shows, articles and  comments about the risk of one event-“I prep because I am worried about X.” The show Doomsday Preppers does this-“Jim and Joan are worried about the risk of an EMP attack.  Our experts say the chance of that is 1 in 10,000.”

Ignoring for a moment that their experts may be wrong, the real problem with that approach is that it badly misstates the risk, and takes no account of the fact that prepping prepares you for numerous possible events.  Even if (a very big if) the...

Wednesday Miscellany News Brief

1.) The U.S. Economy Is Collapsing – Americans Are Out Of Money : “The price of oil traded below $40 briefly this morning. The propaganda machine would have you believe that OPEC is driving the price down to put the U.S. shale industry out of business. This has to be one of the most idiotic rationalizations for a negative economic occurrence I’ve ever seen (that, and “the bad weather ate my homework”). The price of oil is collapsing because demand for oil is collapsing. Demand for oil is collapsing because economic activity globally, including and especially in the U.S., is...

Paris – Ground Zero For The European Jihad

Paris terrorist attackIt has become increasingly clear to anyone who has been watching since 9/11, that the attack on the twin towers wasn’t an isolated incident, but rather the opening salvo in a new war. While President Bush responded to it by declaring his infamous “War on Terror,” he was late, terror, compliments of a number of Islamic organizations, had already declared war on the western world.

I say the western world, rather than the United States, because up until the last few years, there have been very few terrorist attacks on the United States. Yet during those ensuing years, those terrorist organizations have been busy in Europe. It wasn’t really until the rise of ISIS, that we saw much of an increase of Islamic terrorism here at home.

But we are not the first target in the plans for this jihad. While the Muslim world hates the United States and fully intends to bring us down, they have decided to go after Europe first. More specifically, it appears that they have chosen France as ground zero.

The terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday the 13th, are the second major terrorist attack in Paris to receive worldwide press this year. Together with the attack on Charlie Hebdo, earlier this year, Islamic terrorists have succeeded in killing over 180 people in Paris this year (final numbers on this latest attack are still unsure as of this writing). While not coming anywhere close to the attack on the twin towers, this is a significant number of innocent lives ended, in a war to conquer the world.

Make no mistake, this is a war and its goal is world conquest. Muslim leaders have made it clear that this is a holy war, a jihad, with the goal of creating a worldwide Islamic caliphate. Under such a caliphate, the rest of us have three options: convert to Islam, become what is essentially their slaves or die. If we hesitate in deciding, they’ll decide for us and just kill us.

While Muslims are invading all of Europe, it is clear that they are concentrating on the wealthier countries. Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Britain and France have all accepted large amounts of refugees, mostly from Syria, and are all feeling the effects of these new residents.

And while immigrants and refugees are normally expected to assimilate into the host country’s culture, Muslims emphatically state that the host country must adapt to them, taking businesses, individuals and even the government itself to court over every imagined slight against their beliefs.

France has received more than their fair share of these legal attacks. Earlier this year, reports came out about the “no go zones” throughout France; areas which had been taken over by the Muslim population and where the population has made it clear that everyone else is unwelcome, including the police.

The coordinated Friday the 13th attack makes the terrorist death toll in France higher than any other nation in Europe this year. It is clear that France has been singled out for special attention by the jihadists. While there is no way that we can be certain about the reason for this, unless the terrorists themselves tell us, there are a few possible reasons we can speculate about:

  • France is the most socialist of the Western European countries, giving the terrorists much more of an open door to work in.
  • The French Army hasn’t won a war in over a century. That makes the country look weak.
  • France is a wealthy country, meaning that taking it over would provide a good source of income to the jihadists.
  • France borders Germany, England, Italy and Spain; along with France, these countries have the greatest GDP of all European countries, with the exception of Russia. That makes the conquest of France a very key strategic goal.

As to the attackers in Friday’s massacre, information is slowly dribbling out. Of greatest import, one of the attackers was carrying a passport identifying him as a Syrian refugee, who entered Europe through Greece and then moved on to France.

One of the other terrorists who was captured has identified himself as being a member of ISIS and claimed the attacks were done under the auspices of ISIS. This agrees with press releases made by ISIS leadership themselves. Other attackers were French citizens, all of whom were known to have Muslim sympathies.

So there is no question that the attack was a Muslim attack. But was that all? German police stopped a car that was en route to Paris, carrying a virtual arsenal on board. Could it be that the attack was not as large as originally planned, simply because of a lack of arms?

Of course, the French people are extremely limited in their rights to own any firearms. Apparently, pistols are virtually prohibited, as are all fully-automatic firearms. Rifles and shotguns can be purchased, if one has a permit for ownership for either hunting or sporting purposes. That permit requires a psychological evaluation and must be renewed regularly.

This wasn’t an issue for the terrorists, who like all criminals just ignored the law. But it did ensure that the terrorists would have little to no opposition, as the only ones who could oppose them were the police.

Eyewitness reports from inside the concert hall say that the terrorists had ample time to calmly reload their AK-47s several times, before spraying the crowded hall with more gunfire.

This is the type of country that the Democrat Party wants to give us. They want to take our rights to own firearms away from us, while importing hundreds of thousands of Muslims, at least some of which are bound to be terrorists. If they are not in cahoots with the terrorists, they are fools who are working in such a way as to make it easier for the jihadists to have their way in our country and bring the same sort of attack, with the same sorts of results.

Had there been only one or two citizens in that concert hall who were carrying concealed, the outcome may have been much different. Granted, going up against a fully-automatic assault rifle with nothing more than a pistol is dangerous and the concealed carrier would probably have died. But if they had succeeded in killing or even severely wounding even one of the gunmen, it would have saved dozens of lives.

This video was first seen on Inside Edition

So where does this leave us here in the United States? First of all, we now have proof that ISIS is using the Syrian refugee situation to infiltrate their soldiers into the countries that are being invaded. That’s not really a surprise, as many conservative politicians and commentators have voiced that very concern.

But we have to take into account the full scope of the invasion that is happening today. Since Obama took power, he has allowed more than 250,000 Muslim immigrants each and every year. Of these, only about 10% have skills which allow them to become self-supporting, without depending on government assistance. So, you and I are literally financing this jihad with our tax dollars, as Obama gives them our money so that they can come here to wage war against our culture.

We know that they are waging war against our culture, because we see it all the time. Not all of them are doing so with automatic weapons and explosive vests. Many are doing so in the courtrooms. These are the supposed “moderates.” How is it moderate to demand that our culture change to match their restrictive, oppressive law?

Then there are those who are committing outright acts of violence. Since 2011, more than 100 Muslims have been charged with jihad-related crimes, here in the United States.

Obama’s administration claims that we face a greater danger from right-wing supremacist terrorists, but that’s only because they label every such event as an act of terrorism, while they refuse to admit that any Muslim act of violence is an act of terrorism and jihad; rather, it is “workplace violence.”

So there’s no question that we have Muslim terrorists here within our borders. The only questions are how many of them are here and what they are going to do. That we’re going to have to wait to see.

Coincidentally, the same day that they were attacking Paris, the first 10,000 Syrian refugees landed in New Orleans. They will be processed there and moved out to the receiving cities, where they will be allowed to live off of your and my tax dollars.

Since the leftist government will be vetting them, we can be sure that they won’t care how many terrorists are in that group. We’ll find out when their acts are reported as another case of workplace violence, while the liberal media tries to spin it into being right-wing conservatives that did it.

Friends, we are living in dangerous times. If you don’t have a concealed carry license, get one, before it is too late. Start carrying, every minute you are awake. Get to the shooting range and get some practice. Learn how to put down those terrorists. You might just be the one who stops such an event from happening. There’s no time to wait.
