Prep Blog Review: 5 Easy DIY Projects For Preppers

prep blog 8apr

Those who are seeking to be self-sufficient and prepared for any disaster could never have enough ideas to turn into DIY projects. Still the ones we like most are those projects that will come in handy when SHTF, namely about water, food or defense.

We found 5 DIY preps that are affordable and can be accomplished over the weekend, with just a bit of labor, the proper know-how, and a few minimal investments.

1. How to Turn a 5 Gallon Bucket into a Solar Still

5 gallon bucket

In this day and age, we have plumbing and faucets. We have our own water bills and water heaters. We also have our own water pipelines which connects with the city’s or county’s pipeline. We drink our water from our faucets. We may have water filters so that we may stay away from unwanted bacteria and particles. But what happens if an earthquake or a natural disaster occurs and it destroys the pipelines?”

2. The Durable, 3-Step Off-Grid Oven You Can Build In Less Than An Hour

off-grid-oven-3

“I must tell you: I am no survival expert. But my husband and I love the outdoors, and sustainable living is a major part of our lives.

If it’s not building a rocket stove in our backyard, it’s baking cakes on the beach. Experimenting and building our own gear is just our way of life, so when we moved off-grid, the habit came with us — and so did our love for baking. Ready for the challenge of building an off-grid oven, we started experimenting with baking techniques.”

3. How to Make Homemade Extracts

homemade-extracts-post

“If you do a lot of baking or homemade cooking, you will use a lot of extracts.

Your needs can range from homemade cookies, french toasts, homemade coffee creamers and so on. Buying commercial extracts is usually okay, but you take the chance with it being full of corn syrup and artificial flavor. Why spend the money when you can make it at home yourself? They are great hostess or holiday gifts as well. I like to use these swing top bottles for storage and when gifting. It just ads that homesteady flair to me. But, in reality, you can just use plain old mason jars to make and store your extracts in. Here’s how to get started making your own extracts.”

4. How to Make a Powerful Bow in Your Garage for $15

Ready Nutrition easy bow

“One of the benefits of archery is that in the long run, it’s not a very expensive hobby. Unlike firearms, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on ammunition to maintain your proficiency.

And since bows aren’t as loud or destructive as firearms, there’s a good chance that you won’t need to pay to visit an archery range unless you live in the city. Your backyard would be sufficient for that.

5. How to Make a Cheap Homemade DIY Chicken Brooder

How-to-Make-a-Homemade-DIY-Chicken-Brooder-Cheap_1

“Every couple of years we add a few chickens to our flock, most of the time we just use a plastic storage bin as a brooder because we only get a couple of chickens. This time was a little different. This time we got 12 chickens and needed more room, so I needed a way to build a cheap homemade DIY chicken brooder that would stay warm, and be roomy enough as the chicks got bigger.”

What did you do to prep this week?

Before we get started I would like to thank and give a shout-out to a few of our most loyal and dedicated readers – Ron G, Victoria S, and Tonya V for their generous contributions this week. If you too want to contribute via a monetary contribution then you can do that here.

Well, folks according to the local weather we are going to have temperatures below freezing on the Cumberland Plateau tonight so you all had better cover up any plants that you don’t want frozen tonight. The unpredictable weather over this area is the reason that I don’t start planting until May 1st.

How Do You Handle Emergency Food Storage?

by Moira M

This is an entry in our non-fiction writing contest

As I write this, we are in the middle of Winter Storm Jonas. There is 13″ of snow in the yard and the closest paved road is five miles away. I haven’t been off the property in five days and did not make a trip to the store to stock up for this storm. Doom and gloom time? Not really. The power was out for about 12 hours this morning. We had coffee, bacon, eggs and toast for breakfast courtesy of the propane camp stove. If necessary, we could wait here happily for the next week or two eating a variety of foods with...

Dried Bean Recipe from Schatzie Ohio

From Schatzie Ohio

OK, we all hear that to be a good prepper we need to store a lot of dried beans – LOTS of dried beans. Being a good prepper (at least, I think I am) I have stored lots of dried beans in a variety of types. I have kidney beans, pinto beans, white (navy) beans, red beans, black beans, lentils, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), split peas and lima beans. With all these beans you will need a lot of recipes to cook them. Here again, I have lots of recipes for all the different kinds of beans except for the lima bean. For the lima I only have one recipe.

Well, way back in the...

How To Protect Your Garden: DIY Smoke Bombs

DIY SMOKE BOMBS

Insects such as mosquitoes and flies carry diseases by biting an infected host, then biting you. West Nile virus has been an issue for years, and now the new Zika virus is spreading through Florida and other states thanks to infected mosquitoes. Rats also carry diseases such as rabies as do opossums.

Pests such as moles and groundhogs dig holes in your pasture and either eat the beneficial bugs in the dirt or cause holes that can break the legs of livestock. Bugs eat your leaves and birds eat your berries and cherries. That’s just not acceptable after all of your hard work!

All of these issues can be serious now. But if SHTF, these critters can each be lethal in their own way. And so are the bigger predators that attack your crops.

Figure out now how to deal with these pests in ways that don’t depend upon calling for help. Though there are numerous effective methods for getting rid of pests, smoke has been used for centuries for a variety of pest control situations and it’s basically a free commodity that’s easy to access. That’s why you need to know how to DIY smoke bombs.

There are actually smoke bombs available commercially for very little money but, as a prepper, you probably want to know how to build your own. That’s what we’re going to discuss today.

Where There’s One Up, There’s One Down

Smoke bombs are more effective as repellents than as a means to permanently get rid of pests; by its very nature, smoke is temporary and, unless it’s released in a small, confined area, it’s rarely lethal. A perfect example of this is the use of citronella candles in the evenings to keep away mosquitoes. The smoke and the smell of citronella act together to repel insects.

Even if smoke does kill, you’re stuck with dead critters under your porch or whatever space it is that you’ve smoked. Definitely not what you want, so it’s best to use other methods if you want to kill the pests.

Smoke can, however, be a good tool to use to smoke them out if you just want to get the rats out of the shed, the squirrels out of the attic, or the groundhogs from under the porch. It’s also a good method to get rid of bugs that may be eating your trees or birds that want to pick your cherries at exactly the right moment, an hour before you do!

Building smoke bombs can be tricky because of the obvious risk of fire. As we all know, where there’s one, there’s the other and your goal is to get the rats out of the shed, not to burn the shed down altogether! That being said, there are still a couple of ways that you can use smoke to clear out pests.

Rule Number 1 when it comes to smoking out pests is that you should NEVER  do it inside, or use smoke bombs on furniture or anything flammable or valuable that you don’t want to smell like the bomb.

Rule Number 2 is that there are probably better ways to deal with most infestations than using smoke bombs, unless you’re just trying to temporarily chase away the pest. They only work as long as the smoke exists. As soon as the smoke is gone, the pests will likely reappear. That’s fine if you’re just trying to deter bugs while you’re outside, get a hive of bees to quiet long enough to get the honey, or want to get the critters out from under the shed, so don’t get me wrong. Just don’t expect the smoke bombs to cure your pest invasion permanently.

Why NOT to Build a Smoke Bomb Using Ping Pong Balls

Yup, that’s right. Ping pong balls. If you think about it, they seem to be the perfect container for such things. They’re lightweight, easy to drill a hole in, and are hollow. Ping pong balls are one of those multi-purpose items that you should probably have around the house anyway, so of course people have found a way to make a smoke bomb with them.

Here’s the problem: you’re burning PVC, which is extremely toxic. Also, the bombs are unstable. Even using the same method, one may make smoke while another will burst into flames. But, you may say, you’re trying to kill pests, right? Yes, but there’s no reason to give yourself cancer or burn your barn down while you’re doing it. Skip it, no matter how easy it seems to be.

How to Make a Smoke Bomb that Won’t Kill You

Recipe 1: Basic DIY Smoke Bomb

Basically, all you need is a tube, a wick, and a couple of ingredients that are easy to obtain: wooden matchsticks or candle wicks for the fuse, a toilet paper or paper towel roll, potassium nitrate (aka saltpeter) and sugar.

  • Combine the saltpeter and sugar in a skillet over low heat using about 3 parts saltpeter to 2 parts sugar. (You can adjust this ratio if you want, to meet your needs. More sugar makes for a smoke bomb that’s harder to light and burns slower. More saltpeter makes for a smoke bomb that burns faster.)
  • Stir the mixture over low heat until it liquefies and becomes a caramel color. Be careful not to burn it!
  • Pour the mixture onto aluminum foil in puddles about 3 inches or so around. Allow to cool.
  • Peel off of aluminum foil and roll it up around the fuse, leaving an end sticking out to light.
  • Cut the toilet paper roll in half. Line the inside with aluminum foil so that the roll doesn’t catch on fire when you light the fuse. Place the sugar mixture inside of it, with the fuse sticking out of one end.
  • Pinch that end of the tube almost closed around the fuse but leave enough of an opening that the fuse will burn down to the sugar mixture, and pinch the other end into a funnel that will allow the smoke to escape.

To smoke the pests, find the holes that the moles or groundhogs are occupying. Place one smoke bomb in each hole, piling the dirt around the bomb but making sure that the inside end of the bomb is inside the hole and not stuck in the dirt. Light the fuse, making sure that the sugar mixture catches before walking away. You don’t strictly need a fuse; you can actually leave a bit of the sugar mixture sticking out of the end of the roll if you’d like.

A non-cooking alternative to this is to combine the sugar and saltpeter in a small paper or plastic cup and add just enough water to make it a paste. Stick the fuse in, then allow to sit for a couple of days until the mixture is completely dry. Follow the rest of the directions above. This also works for sheds, etc. Just be sure to set the smoke bomb on something non-flammable and leave room above it so that, just in case it catches on fire, you don’t burn the building down.

Recipe 2: Aluminum Nitrate Smoke Bomb

This one’s easy, too. Aluminum nitrate is the granules found inside of a cold pack.

  • Simply cut the cold pack open and pour the granules into a container.
  • Add just enough water to the granules to dissolve them: don’t use any more water than you have to.
  • Dip a rolled-up piece of newspaper into the solution and allow it to absorb the water.
  • Remove and tie it up with some string, then allow to dry thoroughly.

You can use this smoke bomb as-is or put it in the aluminum foil-lined roll as described above. Light it and you have a smoke bomb!

Other Ideas for DIY Smoke Bombs

I’ve also heard of using eggshells to hold the smoke bombs – just poke a small hole in one end and a larger one in the rounder end of the egg, blow the egg out of the shell, then use a funnel to put the bomb ingredients in. Put the fuse in the smaller end before you put the bomb ingredients in the other.

Video first seen on Rex Patrick.

If you simply want to get rid of insects or birds temporarily, say for an outdoor gathering or to keep them away from your tree until you can pick the berries, simply light a bonfire with the size based on the area that you want to keep pest-free. Make it big enough to produce enough smoke to encompass the area but not so big that the fire gets out of control.

Citronella candles in a bucket are always good for camping if you’re trying to repel mosquitoes and flies. Just set a few of them around the site.

Any time that you do an outside burn, you need to monitor it closely. This includes the bombs described above that you’re using for the mole or groundhog holes. Make sure it’s completely out before walking away from it.

Now that you have a few ideas about how to build smoke bombs, go to it. Remember that smoke bombs aren’t a permanent solution; they’ll only smoke the critters out temporarily.

But you still need them! And remember that these critters are not the only menace for your homestead: bigger predators are aiming to hijack your food reserve. Click on the banner below to find out more!

Are You Always Ready to Bug Out?

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Some say it all boils down to what you are prepping for – some sort of national emergency, oil crises, natural disaster, mass civil unrest, pandemic, etc. No matter the reason, it doesn't really matter unless you are always ready to bug out.

Did You Choose The Proper Seeds For Planting?

SVP choosing seeds for planting

Planting fruits, vegetables, and herbs is easy – you just toss some seeds into some dirt, add water, and wait for them to grow, right?

Well, in the most basic ways, yes. But if you want to grow quality plants and preserve your seeds long-term, you need to put a little more effort into finding quality seeds.

A tomato seed is a tomato seed, right? Wrong. It’s a good thing you’re reading this article! There are different types of plants, thus different types of seeds, and which type you choose will drastically affect the quality of future generations of plants.

Here’s how to make the smart choice for growing healthy crops!

You Need to Know the Types of Seeds

GMO Seeds

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. What it means is that scientists take a standard seed or seeds and add organisms to the DNA strands of the plant. They may do this to make the plant more resistant to disease, or to make it grow denser is smaller space. Regardless of why it’s modified, the seeds from these plants may not sprout, or thrive even if they do.

Hybrid Seeds

These seeds have been made by pollinating one strain of plant with a different strain of plant. This is usually done to create hardier plants or plants with the best features of each parent plant. By doing this, hopefully, you’ll get the results that you want.

However, future generations of seeds are unstable. It’s sort of like breeding “boutique” dog breeds. For instance, a puggle is a cross between a pug and a beagle. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not making fun of this breed because I have one that sleeps with me every night. I’m just saying that, even though he’s adorable, the mix was unreliable.

He could have been born looking like a pug with spots, super long ears and a long, straight tail, or he could have been born looking like a beagle with a curly tail and a long snout. There are a million variations that could have happened, and you can see that for yourself just by searching “puggle”. And even by breeding him to another puggle, there’s no telling what the puppies would look like.

Anyway, you get the idea about why hybrid seeds may not be the best way to go if you’re going to store seeds for survival.

Organic Seeds

Don’t let the name fool you. The term “organic” simply means that the seeds were obtained from plants that were grown using natural methods. That’s it. They may still be hybrids or from GMO plants.

Heirlooms

These are seeds that have been handed down from generation to generation. They’re going to grow the same type of plant and produce the same type of fruit each season and the yields will be similar, given similar growing circumstances.

heirloom seeds

The only warning that I have about heirloom seeds is that you should make sure that the seeds will grow to crop in whatever area you intend to bunker down in.

Open Pollinated Seeds

These are seeds from plants that have been grown and allowed to be pollinated as nature intended – by local birds, wind, etc. They’re more genetically diverse, which allows plants to slowly and naturally adapt to local growing conditions. As long as the pollen isn’t shared between different varieties of the same  species of plants, these seeds will remain true-to-form every year.

How to Test the Quality of Seeds

This may be putting the cart before the horse if you’re storing your own seeds butt many new growers overlook a critical step in planting crops – making sure the seeds will germinate. If you’re planting seeds to grow food for survival, you could starve to death waiting for the seeds that you plant to grow.

Fortunately, it’s easy to tell if a batch of seeds is going to grow. There are a few germination tests that you can use instead of just tossing the seeds in the ground and hoping for the best.

Water Test

Maybe you’ve found a really good deal on a batch of seeds at a trading event or even a yard sale, but will they grow? Toss them in a glass of water and wait a few minutes. If the seeds sink, they’re good. If they float, they’re not.

Test Germination Run

Put at least 10 seeds from a single batch onto one half of a paper towel then fold the other half of the towel over the seeds. Spray it down with enough water to moisten the towel. It may be helpful to spritz it with a 1:10 bleach to water ratio to keep them from molding.

Place them in the baggie and only partially seal it so that air can still get in. Label the bag and start a record with the date and how many  seeds were started. Store it in a warm, dark place and dampen the towel as necessary to keep it from going dry. Within a couple of days, you should start to see germination.

Note daily how many seeds either germinate or mold and remove those seeds from the bag. All seeds will germinate within 14 days if they’re going to.

Now, divide how many seeds germinated by how many seeds you started with and you have a pretty good idea of the germination ratio of your batch. Even if only half of them germinate, but they do it quickly, you may want to just plant twice the seeds instead of tossing the batch. If the germination ratio was low and they germinated slowly, you may just want to toss them.

Now that you’ve found some great seeds that you know will grow where you need them to, you need to store them.

Preparing Seeds for Storage

This is an extremely important step in storing seeds so that they don’t go bad, but it’s fairly simple.

First, you need to decide if your seeds will germinate if you dry them. Seeds that can be dried are called desiccation-tolerant. Most garden plants fall into this category and can dried and stored long-term.  Desiccation-intolerant plants produce seeds that won’t germinate if dried, but they can still be stored short-term. Some seeds, such as citrus seeds, are semi-tolerant which means that you can dry them but that they lose viability quickly and germinate slowly once they’re dried.

Preparing Desiccation-Tolerant Seeds for Storage

These seeds are great for storing dried because during natural the ripening and drying process, they’re preparing to go dormant. Most of their physiological processes slow down or stop altogether and they convert food reserves from sugars to fats and starches.

As a matter of fact, many seeds REQUIRE drying and a dormancy period before they can ripen, go dormant, and germinate again. Dry your seeds slowly and thoroughly using the sun (if you’re in a low-humidity area) or a low-humidity, airy environment such as your air conditioned counter. You want the relative humidity to be between 30-40%.

Spread them on a tray or baking sheet 1 or 2 seeds deep. Most seeds should be dry in 1-2 weeks though larger ones will take a bit longer. You don’t want them to be zero moisture, but they should be hard. For instance, corn should be dry enough to require a hammer to break it and squash seeds will break instead of bend.

Preparing Desiccation-Intolerant Seeds for Storage

You can store these seeds for up to several months with some seeds by keeping them in cool, moist condition. Put them in a container with damp material such as peat moss or damp paper towels. Choose a container that allows at least some airflow (poke holes in the lid or leave the lid loose). They have to continue the respiration process to remain viable.

Store in the fridge but don’t let them dry out or freeze. Plant them ASAP because they will eventually mold or rot.

What About Storing Seeds?

If stored properly, seeds can last for years. To remain viable in storage, seeds need a proper temperature and moisture level. If there’s too much moisture and enough warmth, seeds will germinate; not exactly what we’re looking for!

Here are some tips:

  • Keep the seeds out of light. They should be stored in a dark place or in opaque containers.
  • Store in waterproof (actually, moisture-proof container. Tossing in an oxygen absorber in will help, especially if you’re in an area that has an average of greater than 30% relative humidity.
  • Store in an airtight container. Mylar bags are great, but baggies, mason jars or Tupperware containers will work, too.
  • Keep seeds cool – under 40 degrees F and avoid fluctuations of temperature.
  • Rotate your seeds on a first-in-first-out basis just like you do the rest of your supplies.
  • Always, always, always perform a germination test before you plant your seeds.

If your seeds sweat inside the container, you haven’t dried them enough and need to take them out immediately and finish drying them before they mold.

That’s what you need to know to make a smart choice about your planting. And believe me, you will need this knowledge, because things are going to get from bad to worse about our food independence! CLICK on the banner below to find out more!

Getting Started In Prepping: Be Smart And Cheap

By Cal Wilson

Keep in mind that, unlike other new endeavors, becoming a prepper is a goal the beginner may feel a lot of accomplishment right away, because there is a much higher likelihood of shorter-term disasters happening, and shorter-term disasters are easier to prepare for.  So dive right in!

Start by storing some stuff for you and your family to survive a three-day power outage:  a case of bottled water, some dehydrated food (from the camping sections of Target or Walmart), some flashlights with good batteries, and some clean clothes, coats and blankets are all that would be needed to get most people through a short-term disaster.

Beyond that, it would be a good idea to look into “bug-out bags” for everyone in your family, and for those family members who commute or who may be away when a longer-term disaster could hit, that family member should keep their bug-out bag in their car.  The contents of the bug-out bag depend on your surroundings and what disaster you envision could happen.  I have a bug-out bag in my car, and in it I have a change of clothes, a Berkey Sports water bottle, bottles of water, a few power bars, camping food and pans, a minimal first-aid kit, a flashlight, pup tent, lots of cash, toilet paper, copies of important papers, a tire-iron and a small hatchet (the last two for protection but also for foraging if need be).  All of these items can be bought on Amazon or at Walmart for not much money.

Beyond that, I see no reason why preppers would not plan on anything and everything going wrong, and prepare accordingly.  If you plan on the end of the world with a full-blown survival retreat, survival group members all trained and ready to go, and the end of the world never happens, so what?  You have some extra stuff stored up and friends who have prepared for something that never happened.  No big loss.

I recently wrote a non-fiction book on the subject of prepping, entitled Dirt Cheap Valuable Prepping, by Cal Wilson.  In the book I prioritize the items new preppers should stock up on, with an emphasis on really cheap items you can buy, and where to find them.  For example, a sleeping bag, which is an important item to have on hand, could be bought new at a store for hundreds of dollars, or used on Ebay or at a thrift store.  Even a laundered, used sleeping bag would be a huge savings over a new one.

In the book I also included a lot of ideas that have not been covered anywhere else.  For example, many prepping experts advise stocking up on toilet paper, which could run out of in a prolonged disaster.  I advise buying a travel bidet, which take some getting used to but will still keep you clean after you have run out of toilet paper.  $15 on Amazon, and unlike toilet paper, reusable.

I also wrote about details on the brands of good and inexpensive flashlights (Dorcy) and rechargeable batteries (Eneloop) to buy, what types of containers to use to store stuff in, the importance of electrolytes and recipes, dryer lint to start fires, medicines for skin fungi, and so on.

At the end of the book I also included a list of prepper-themed TV shows, movies, websites and prepper podcasts that I advise the reader watch or listen to.  Prepping is not only something to do, or a series of things to buy.  It is a lifestyle, and the prepper podcasts and other media I recommend get you into that lifestyle pretty quickly.

Become a prepper!  You can do it!  And you don’t have to spend a ton of money or become rabid to do it.

My book, Dirt Cheap Valuable Prepping, by Cal Wilson, is available on Amazon, Kindle and Audible.

How many of you remember looking forward to a long weekend of camping only to have your excitement curtailed by the aggravating, time-consuming task of finding and connecting all the right poles while putting up the tent? And what about that persnickety front door zipper that wouldn’t close all the way? It screamed an all-out invitation to many varieties of creepy-crawly critters to come feast on human flesh, as well as any four-legged camping companions.

When we were newly married, we camped pretty simply. Our two-man...

Do The 2016 Elections Even Matter?

obama

As we get deeper and deeper into the 2016 election season, things are getting to be more and more of a mess.

As so often happens, the campaigning is becoming less and less about which candidate can convince us that they can do the best job of being President and Commander in Chief and more and more about mudslinging.

Trump’s campaign has never really been about policy and issues, but rather about a charismatic candidate that knows how to attract the masses (much like Obama’s). Bernie has been all about making promises to give his constituents more and more freebies. Then there’s Hillary, who has been all about her ego. Cruz has tried to keep on track, but even he has been dragged into the mud, along with everyone else.

But in truth, I’m not sure that any of that matters. I say that because I’m not totally convinced that we’re going to have elections in November. Or if we do, whether the winner will be allowed to take their seat in the Oval Office. In other words, I’m not sure that Obama is going to leave.

There have been hints from the White House that Obama wants to stay. He’s even gone so far as to publicly say that he wants to serve a third term. I’m not talking about his press secretary saying that, but Obama himself. He is so convinced that he is the best president that this nation has ever had, that he probably feels that it is his duty to stay and finish the work of transformation that he’s started.

We have to remember that beneath it all, Obama is a narcissist. He doesn’t care about anyone, except maybe Michelle and the girls. But since we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, I wouldn’t even count on that. Everything is about him and he likes it that way. Terrorist attacks, wars and other serious issues that should occupy the mind of the Chief Executive all play second fiddle to such grave matters as his golf game and partying with celebrities.

This is made clear in how he deals with these situations. How many times have we seen him leave his golf game for a minute, in order to make some poorly thought out comments on a disastrous situation, and then go right back to swinging his club? If there is any way to show his lack of caring, more clear than that, I don’t know what it is.

Yet while he studiously ignores national security, the plight of Americans out of work, the stagnant economy, and the disaster called Obamacare, he continues lying about how much better off the country is under his rule. Like I said, he’s out of touch with reality, and that’s putting it nicely.

In this, his last legal year as president, Obama has become all about his legacy. More than anything, he wants to make sure that the history books treat him well and show how great a man he thinks he is. His agreement with Iran and his recent trip to Cuba are all about this. He doesn’t care if it does any good. He doesn’t even care if it hurts the country. He just cares that future generations are able to look back and see what a great man he thinks he was and what great things he thinks he did.

This is the man we have in the White House, and have had there for the last seven years. He has ignored his oath of office since day one. Focusing instead on doing what he wants to, furthering his ideology, helping his friends, furthering Islam, causing racial division and destroying this once great land. Then he lies to us, selectively using facts and figures, even if he has to have people change them, to prove that he is doing good for the country.

It must be a fun game to be king; especially if you’re a king who doesn’t care about the people. Caring about the people is boring; it might cause you to take action for their benefit. It’s much more fun to take action on your preconceived ideas and ideology, rather than doing anything that truly makes a difference.

Of course, there are those who think he has made a difference. I even know some of them. Mostly, they are too lazy to work and are thrilled to have a president who is bent on wealth redistribution. After all, that’s better than getting up in the morning and having to go to work.

But it’s this narcissistic thinking that makes Obama so dangerous, especially when it is coupled by his disconnect from reality. He is, quite literally, likely to do anything, even things he says that he can’t do.

Just look at the executive amnesty that he’s given to illegal aliens. Even though he was quoted as having publicly said more than 20 times that he couldn’t do it, he went ahead and did it anyway. He has shown so little regard for the law and become so lawless, that he is likely to do just about anything, regardless of what the law says. He clearly doesn’t care anymore about the law.

All he does is create an appearance of doing things lawfully. That’s what his “executive actions” are supposed to do. He is saying that he has authority to do things that the Constitution doesn’t allow him to have authority over, and covering it by signing a document that supposedly makes it law. Like the documents that he’s signed, giving himself and some of his key cabinet members the right to declare martial law at any time. The Constitution doesn’t allow that; nor does any other law passed by Congress. But as it is right now, he has given himself that authority. Now, why do you think he’s done that?

Here’s my concern. Obama might be crazy, but the line between crazy and genius is often a fine one. Just look at Hitler. He was both crazy and a genius at the same time. Obama might just be the same sort. So it’s quite conceivable that he signed those executive orders because he was expecting to use them. It’s even conceivable that he did so in advance, just to hide them in the smoke and clutter. That way, if they had been challenged, it would be when nothing was happening to concern people.

Video first seen on Western Journalism.

But What Would Happen if He Declared Martial Law?

Supposedly martial law is something the military declares to protect the people, when the government can’t do its job. But in recent times, it has been something that politicians declare, to protect themselves from the people. I can assure you, if Obama declares martial law, it will be to protect himself, even if he tries to make it look like he’s trying to protect the people.

That will be very easy for him to arrange. He’s got the #BlackLivesMatter people at his beck and call, as well as lots of radical Muslims. He could use either group, or both, to social unrest and violence, to the point where it looks like declaring martial law is the only thing he can do to protect the country. Then, with martial law in place, he can suspend the elections or the change in office, or even suspend the Constitution in its entirety, sending Congress home.

It is interesting to note, at least from a purely intellectual side, that martial law has been used as the excuse to put many dictators in power. Once in power, they eliminated all opposition and any of the laws of their country that were an inconvenience to them. Once that was done, they were able to do as they pleased.

Obama has fired or caused to retire over 200 flag officers (admirals and generals), all but decapitating the military. He’s then used the military as his own personal social experiment, destroying combat effectiveness by putting the LGBT agenda first. He’s infiltrated supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood into sensitive posts in the government, especially in the Department of Homeland Security. If it wasn’t so sad, that would sound like a bad joke; putting members of a known terrorist group in charge of the security of the nation.

Many of Obama’s initiatives, especially those done by executive order, have served to weaken our country. As if we didn’t have enough people in need of assistance, he’s flooded the country with illegal aliens and Muslims, putting an incredible strain on both our economy and our national security. It is clear that we are nowhere near as secure today as we were seven years ago. It is also clear that the lawlessness that he has brought into the White House has not served the American people.

Looking at that, along with everything else he’s done, it’s not inconceivable that Obama will declare martial law, just so that he can stay in office, rather than relinquish his office to another. That’s especially true if a Republican or even a right-leaning independent were to win the election to become our country’s next president.

I am quite sure that if Obama does declare martial law, he will believe that he is doing so for the best interest of the country. The problem is, he thinks that he is the best for our country. It doesn’t matter what anybody else thinks, his voice is the only one he can hear.

So I ask you, do the 2016 elections really matter, or is Obama going to do what he wants and stay in office anyway?

Back to Basics: Avoiding Conflict When SHTF

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

What if we could modify our thought process for a while and avoid conflict when SHTF instead of considering violence as the inevitable outcome of the prepper haves versus the unprepared have nots?

Survival Essentials for Women: Cloth Menstrual Pads

By Amy Napoli
Reusable menstrual pads are among items you should have in your emergency survival kit in order to be prepared for any crisis or SHTF event that may happen during your lifetime. In addition to clean underwear, a torch and wet wipes, reusable cloth menstrual pads or reusable menstrual cup should be one of the essential ‘just in case’ items you have packed in your survival purse, ready to go.
Picture
If you’ve never used before, cloth menstrual pads are just like your regular disposable pads, except that they are made of fabric and come in a whole bunch of colors, sizes and styles. They are perfectly safe to use in place of the disposable types and provide just as much protection. You simply put them on as you would with the regular types and replace them every 2 – 6 hours, depending on your flow. Instead of discarding, however, you would lightly soak your cloth menstrual pads to prevent stains then you can toss them in the washing machine or hand wash if you prefer, and they are ready to be used again.
With that said, are cloth pads also a good choice in times of crisis when surviving is paramount? Here is why the answer to that is a resounding yes and why you should include a set in your emergency survival kit. They are:
  • Reusable
After a catastrophe, businesses may shut their doors, and even if they are open, stock may be damaged, depleted, or looted. If you run out of disposable sanitary napkins, you might be left in an embarrassing situation. The best cloth menstrual pads can be washed and re-used for as long as you want until things return to normal.

  • Safer for you
Menstrual cloth pads contain no chemical by-products that will interfere with your body’s natural chemistry; neither do they have in toxins that have been linked to toxic shock syndrome. In a survival situation, it would be an even bigger tragedy if you had to worry about dying from a bacterial infection or catching an annoying yeast infection, so you should invest in some high quality cloth menstrual pads as part of your survival kit.

  • Better for the Environment
Research shows that women can use as much as 11,000 feminine hygiene products throughout their lives, of which disposable pads make up a significant proportion. That in turn leads to a lot of garbage in the landfills, which contributes to pollution. The idea of catastrophes in the world is already based on pollution, but using environmentally-friendly cloth menstrual pads may not only help you survive but possibly prevent future disasters.
With all the different changes your body goes through on a monthly basis, seeing your period is one event that you have to be prepared for at all times, including when there are floods, earthquakes, or  tsunamis. This is a sensitive topic that many women might not be eager to address. But, if you want to be truly prepared for an emergency, it’s one elephant in the room that you will have to face. If you’re not sure where to start, there are many high quality cloth menstrual pads available on Amazon. They come in many patterns and sizes, from light flow to heavy flow or overnight pads.  Be prepared and use reusable cloth pads for all the reason stated above.  It’s an essential item to stock up that also come with little wet bags, which you can use to store used pads in until you can wash them later. Check them out and be prepared for any time of the month.

31 Spring Cleaning Hacks Any Homesteader Should Know

SVP cleaningCleaning…ugh! For most of us, spring cleaning is right up there with a root canal, though the results are admittedly gratifying – after you’re done.

Even then, there may be still be some stains that you can’t seem to get completely out. Today, we’re going to give you some tips to help your back and kick those stubborn stains.

  1. Use lemons to remove water stains

You know all those little spots on water spigots and shower handles that just won’t go away no matter what you do? Use slices of lemon on them. The citric acid in the lemon will have your fixtures gleaming in no time!

  1. Use dryer sheets to clean buildup off of shower doors

This is a great way to get a second use out of something, and as preppers, multi-use items are king! Just wet them with water and wipe your doors with them. Also good for removing mineral deposits from fixtures.

  1. Use a dustpan to fill your mop bucket

Those tiny bathroom sinks are a bummer when you’re trying to fill a bucket. Just prop the “floor” end of your dustpan on the rim under the faucet and rest the handle on the edge of the sink. Fill the dustpan, and the water will run up the handle and out into the bucket on the floor, turning the handle into an extended faucet.

  1. Scrub your iron skillets with sea salt

Sometimes your skillets get really dirty, or they get a sticky residue but you don’t want to “unseason” it or use harsh cleansers on the iron. Coarse salt and a sponge will have it clean in no time.

  1. Remove pilling or lint from jeans or sweatshirts using a razor

Don’t throw away those pants or shirts that have built up fabric or lint pills. Just use a disposable razor to “shave” them off. It’s quick, easy, and effective and removes stuff that a lint roller leaves behind. Your sweatshirts and jeans will look new again.

  1. De-funk a sponge in the microwave

Sponges start to smell funky after a couple of days due to bacteria and mildew. Get it damp then toss it in the microwave for a minute. Be careful because it will be hot, but it won’t smell funky anymore because the heat kills the odor-causing bugs.

  1. Clean your shower head with vinegar

Do this first, then when you’re finished cleaning the rest of the house, the shower head will be clean. Pour a cup or so of white vinegar into a bag, place it over your showerhead, then rubber band it to hold it in place. It’ll clean all of the deposits out so that the water flows freely again.

  1. Scent your house with a few drops of extract or oil

This is an old real estate agent trick. If you don’t have a wax burner or oil diffuser, place a few teaspoons of vanilla extract or a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil in an oven-proof mug and bake for an hour. The whole house will smell great.

  1. Steam clean your microwave

Spaghetti pops sauce all over your microwave, meats spew grease and beans explode, making cleaning the microwave seem harder than carving a sculpture. Warm a cup of water in there for 2 minutes, then wipe clean – the steam loosens it right up.

  1. Clean the toilet with coke

Don’t scrub that crazy ring and the orange drip stains in your toilet – pour some coke in there, let it sit for a bit, then flush. Shiny and clean!

  1. Line fridge shelves with plastic wrap

This one never seems to work for me because everything seems to stick to the plastic and pull it loose, but it works like a charm for my sister. Just line your fridge shelves with plastic wrap and then remove the plastic when spills occur.

  1. Keep sheets matched by storing in pillow case

This one is a sanity saver for me. When you wash the sheet set, fold them all up and store the whole set in a pillow case, then when you need a fresh set, they’ll all be right there together. I tuck a dryer sheet in between the sheets to keep them smelling fresh.

  1. Use newspaper and baking soda to freshen your trash can

Absorb leakage and odor from your can by just lining the bottom with newspaper and sprinkling some baking soda over it. If you get spillage, just remove the newspaper and start over.

  1. Clean your food storage area

Remember that you need to keep your food storage area clean, and also to check your food supply regularly.

  1. Clean the toaster with a pastry brush

Those crumbs are tough to get out but if you use a pastry brush, the job will be much easier. Just unplug the toaster first.

  1. Clean windows with a microfiber rag and water

There’s no need for breathing in chemicals. A microfiber cloth and water is all that you need. Wipe one direction then the other and they’ll be clean and streak-free. Want to add a great smell? Add a couple drops of lemon or orange essential oil.

  1. Clean your garbage disposal naturally

Garbage disposals are great, but they’re also a steam bath for germs and will smell bad because of it. Instead of reaching down in there to clean it (gross!) toss your citrus fruit peels down there when you’re done with them and grind them up.

  1. Make your own degreaser

This is a trick that I use all the time, as my fiancé is retired military and now spends his time getting greasy working on motorcycles and I frequently help. As a result, I had to find a degreaser that works, and I did. Baking soda, dish soap and WD-40. Mix them in about equal parts and rub it onto the stain as a pre-soak. For smaller food stains, just use dish soap.

  1. Clean wine with wine

Yay – you’re celebrating completing your spring cleaning and you spill red wine on your shirt or carpet. Ugh. That’s OK – cover the red wine with white wine, then baking soda. Scrub with a toothbrush and rinse/dab dry.

  1. Get paint out of carpet with nail polish remover

If you think about it, it makes sense. Just drizzle a few drops of nail polish remover, aka acetone, to the spot and dab it up with a rag.

  1. Clean your coffeepot with vinegar water

If your coffeepot slows down, the lines are probably clogged with mineral deposits. Put a cup of vinegar in the pot and fill with water, then pour in the well. Run a cycle through, then run a couple of cycles of clean water just to get the vinegar out. Problem solved.

  1. Remove wax from carpet with an iron

Crayons and candles – two staples in many of our lives, but a nightmare if you spill it in the carpet. No worries. Just place 2 pieces of paper over it, then iron it. The wax will stick to the paper. Repeat if necessary.

  1. Clean stainless steel with citrus and baking soda

Slice a lemon or lime into thick slices then dip it into baking soda and scrub your stainless steel sink or grill with it to make it shine! Oh yeah, don’t forget to rinse.

  1. Clean the dishwasher with vinegar and baking soda

Sprinkle the bottom of the machine with baking soda and run it through a cycle. Then spray the inside with a vinegar/water mixture. Run a rinse cycle and you’re good to go.

  1. Make your own carpet cleaner

Last time I cleaned my carpets, the cleaning solution was almost $30! No way was I paying that for a jug of chemicals so I looked for a natural alternative. 1 cup peroxide, 1/2 cup vinegar, 2 tablespoons of dish soap, 10 drops of lemon essential oils, and 2 tablespoons fabric softener.

  1. Clean your mattresses with a martini

Well, not really, but sorta. Pour vodka or rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle and add a few drops of lemon essential oil (or oil of your choice). Spritz it onto your mattress and allow to air dry. The alcohol kills bacteria that causes odor.

  1. Organize your cleaning storage space

This is a big deal for me because I don’t have a ton of space for storing cleaning supplies. Use a tension bar (curtain, shower, or closet rod depending on length you need) to hang your bottles from.

  1. Clean your vase with rice and water

Just sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of rice into the vase, then add an inch or so of water. Shake and swirl until it’s clean. Sea salt and ice works well, too. Oh, and the salt and ice is great for a burnt coffee pot, too.

  1. Use vinegar to remove film from glasses

Dishwashers leave behind a film that builds up after some time. To remove this film, just wipe them with a paper towel soaked in vinegar.

  1. Clean fans with a pillowcase

Slide an old pillowcase over the blade of your ceiling fan, then wipe it clean, pulling the case off as you do. The dirt will fall inside the case.

  1. Clean microfiber furniture with rubbing alcohol

Pretty self-explanatory. Spritz the alcohol onto the spot and then use a brush and sponge to clean it. Use white sponges and brushes because colors may transfer onto your furniture.

Hopefully these hacks have offered you some quick and easy DIY cleaning hacks that will make spring cleaning easier! If you have any that you’d like to add, please share them with us in the comments section below. And remember to subscribe to our newsletter for more spring hacks for your homestead!
