Volcano Collapsible Stove Review

I’ve been interested in the Volcano II cook stove since reading about it in Backwoodsman magazine, so when Emergency Essentials offered to send me one for review, I jumped at the chance. That is one of the perks of having one of the most popular survival blogs on the web (30,000+ page views per day), is I sometimes get free stuff to review and write about.

But, as I tell all companies donating products, expect an honest review, if a product is junk, I will say so. If you are not willing to stand by your products – don’t send them.

Prep Blog Review: Why Old Skills Have To Be Revived

combo

How convenient modern life is! Food and water are pretty easy to find, and there is a solution–but also a cost–for any problem you might have. As long as you have the money and the ignorance to rely on what the big industries provide to the herd, you may rest and wait for your days to pass by. We were born to survive, but prone to forget it.

But we’re not that kind of people! We rely on ourselves to live a good healthy life and survive the crisis. This is how our ancestors did it.

Let’s see what is to be said about old skills that would save our lives one day. We picked four articles to remind you how important is to keep alive what humanity once knew about survival.

  1. How Modern Life Destroys Survival Instinct

How-Modern-Life-Destroys-Survival-Instinct”Our world today would seem magical to our ancestors. Our needs are met almost immediately, we have clean water at the turn of a knob, heat at the push of a button, and light with the flip of a switch. Food is purchased in a box, ready to heat, and a person can prepare a meal in under 6 minutes using the microwave oven that’s a fixture in most modern kitchens.

Our world is clean, convenient, and loaded with abundant resources, things that took significant time and effort to produce in days gone by.”

2. The Last Rebels: 25 Things We Did as Kids That Would Get Someone Arrested Today

25-Things-We-Did-as-Kids-That-Would-Get-Someone-Arrested-Today”With all of the ridiculous new regulations, coddling, and societal mores that seem to be the norm these days, it’s a miracle those of us over 30 survived our childhoods.

Here’s the problem with all of this babying: it creates a society of weenies.

There won’t be more more rebels because this generation has been frightened into submission and apathy through a deliberately orchestrated culture of fear. No one will have faced adventure and lived to greatly embroider the story.”

3. 12 Off-Grid Ways Your Grandparents Re-Used Old Newspapers (That You Should Try)

waste-paper-1024485_1920-400x289”Over the past couple of decades, Americans has gone crazy for recycling. Most communities have a recycling program, and we feel good about saving our cans, bottles, boxes and newspapers and putting them at our curbs for a weekly pick-up.

But long before the phrase “reduce, reuse and recycle” was ever coined, your grandparents used their old newspapers for a wide variety of tasks.”

4. 8 Overlooked Survival Skills That Kept The Native Americans Alive

native-americans-1-1024x640”I have a lot of respect for Native Americans — those who populated this land before the first European white man set foot on these shores.

History rarely mentions it, but countless thousands of those Indians were killed by disease and carried in the boats of those early traders. But before that, the American Indian had a thriving culture, in tune with nature and appreciative of the beauty around them.”

What did you do to prep this week?

Well folks, here we are again and I want to know what you did to prep this week… but please don’t put your real full name into the comment form options, just don’t do it. I’ve asked this before but people still do it. I change the names when I think real names being used, but some of these do get past me and it just takes up my time needlessly looking for and editing those. So once again please don’t use your full real name when commenting.

Okay before we get started today I’d like to give a big shout-out to Kelli M, Willard N, Chantal L, Susan B, and Tom W...

Types And Effects of Nuclear Weapons, The Basics

Today we present another article in our non-fiction writing contest – By Ron G

NUKE WW3Think of this as a primer if you will. It is written to cover the basics that will matter most to you as a prepper. I am intentionally leaving out a lot of technical jargon; there are others willing to throw that out at you. There will be some terms and concepts that do need to be understood. One I will use a lot is Ground Zero (GZ).

Ground Zero is that point on the surface of the earth directly under, at, or over, a nuclear detonation. Your location, distance, and direction, from GZ is very important.

How to Use Your Car for Cooking Off-grid

BIG CAR COOKING

Your car gets you from point A to point B. It may give you a thrill when you rev the engine and it allows you to carry all sorts of stuff, like groceries, kids and luggage. But can it cook for you, too!

As a matter of fact it can! It’s actually not a new concept – people have been doing it for just about as long as cars have been on the road but it’s re-emerging as a great alternate resource for cooking in a survival situation. Carbequing is the topic today!

It’s becoming so popular that Alton Brown teamed up with Myth Busters to see if it’s actually possible (like we needed the theory tested!) and they ended up cooking an entire Thanksgiving dinner by using the areas around the manifold as well as utilizing the area underneath around the exhaust. All they did was wrap it in foil, rig up a special pan to hold it near the exhaust, and a meal was born!

So how, exactly can you do it, and what can you cook? Well, the answer to the latter question is that you can cook everything from a pot roast to an apple pie.

The only problem that I see with this is that it takes a while and if fuel is at a premium in a SHTF scenario, you’ll be wasting fuel that you may not have to spare.

If the emergency isn’t going to last more than a couple of days and you have a full tank of gas, then it may just be worth it if you don’t have another source of cooking.  If the emergency is going to take longer than that and you’re hunkering down and saving your fuel, then maybe not.

Another scenario where it’s feasible is if you’re bugging out in your car. In that case, it’s a free resource because you’re going to be driving anyway; after all, multi-use is the prepper’s way! You can warm up a can of soup or cook some hot dogs in just a short trip, but if you’re cooking something like a pot roast, it’s going to take an hour or two of driving, or letting the car idle up to temperature, then leave it running.

Cooking on an engine block takes longer than traditional cooking but not as long as using a slow cooker, so time your meals accordingly. Make sure that your meat reached the internal temperature appropriate for the type so that you don’t run the chance of getting food poisoning, especially with fowl.

We’re going to provide some recipes below, but if you want the know-all, be-all book on the subject, pick up a copy of Manifold Destiny. I don’t believe that it’s in print anymore but you can get a used copy on Amazon, or a Kindle version.

Now, let’s get cooking.

Preparing Food for Cooking on an Engine Block

First, prepare the food as if you’re going to cook it on a grill or in the oven. Spice it the same way and then wrap it in aluminum foil. Use the heavy-duty kind so that you don’t risk ripping it and starting a grease smoking fest under your hood! As a matter of fact, I’d use two or three layers of it just to be sure.

Make sure that the sides are long enough that you can pull them together and roll it down a few times. Leave enough space on each end to do the same. You’ll be cooking it basically in its own steam so you want to make sure that no air escapes.

Tip: Spray the foil with some cooking spray or wipe it with some oil to help keep the food from sticking, just like you would if you were putting it on the grill or in the oven.

Finding the Hot Spots on the Engine

You can’t just toss your food under the hood in any ole place and expect it to cook. If you’re not familiar with the parts of the motor that get the hottest, start your car and either drive it for a few minutes or let it sit and warm up for 10 minutes or so.

Turn off the car and open the hood. Feel around with your hand hovering over the motor two or three inches to find where it’s hottest. Some sites tell you to touch it to find the hottest parts but take it from a girl who knows her way around a motor – that’s a sure-fire way to end up with some bad burns.

If you find a spot that is putting off enough heat that you wouldn’t want to touch it with your fingers, that’s a sweet spot. If it feels cool enough that you feel as if you could touch it without being burned, it won’t get hot enough to cook your food.

The best place, if you can get to it, is near the exhaust manifold – the place where your exhaust pipes come out of the motor. If you’re going to be driving while your food is cooking, make sure that the spot you choose is tight enough that your food will fit in without falling out. This isn’t so important if you’re cooking while the car is still.

You can test this by wadding up some foil that’s the same size as your food packet and putting it in that spot. If it fits snugly, you’ve got a winning spot. A good reason for using a test piece is to make sure that your hood will close without smashing your food. You need enough clearance to be able to shut the hood whether you’re traveling or not – it holds the heat in.

If you want to get really fancy, you can also secure your food underneath your car on or near the exhaust pipes. I wouldn’t recommend putting it directly on the pipes because that reaches temperatures that are way too hot. You’ll burn the outside of the food before the inside is cooked.

Securing Your Food to Cook on the Engine

You want to make sure that your food isn’t going to fall out if you’re traveling, or even if it’s in a spot where you think it might fall out at a stand-still. You can do this by tucking it under some hoses, or you can secure it with some wire. Don’t use rope or anything else that can’t withstand high temperatures or else you’ll run the risk of either melting it or catching it on fire. Neither scenario is good!

If you’re using a spot underneath the car, you can rig up a pan. The best way to explain this is to let you watch this video of Alton Brown and the Myth Buster guys doing it. You’re now ready to cook!

Video first seen on Discovery.

And a Few Recipes for Carbequing

Here are a few good recipes to get you started.

Roasted Potatoes

  • 1-2 medium-sized potatoes
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp oil or melted butter

Wash and cut the potatoes (or more depending on how many you need and what your space limitations are). Cut them into squares about ¾ inch. Place them in a bowl, drizzle the oil or melted butter on them, then add the seasonings. Stir or toss to coat. Prepare your foil, then wrap the potatoes in the foil as described above. Place on your hot spot on your motor and cook for 25-30 minutes.

Lemon Pepper Turkey Breast

  • 1 standard sized turkey breast (or 2 chicken breasts)
  • 1/8 tsp salt, or to taste
  • 1 tsp lemon pepper seasoning
  • 1 tsp oil or butter

Place your turkey or chicken on the greased foil. Sprinkle the seasonings on each side. Seal the foil as described above and place on the hot spot on your motor. Allow to cook 45 minutes if sitting still or an hour if driving. Check internal temperature using a food thermometer. It needs to be 165 degrees at the center to ensure that all bacteria are dead. E-coli sucks.

Poached Rosemary Salmon

  • 1 lb. salmon filet
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary or 1/4 tsp dried rosemary

Prepare foil as described above. Lay the salmon filet on the foil and sprinkle the rest of the ingredients over it. Wrap in foil and place on your engine’s hot spot for 15 minutes if sitting around or 20 minutes if driving. If you’d like to make a complete meal out of it, you can always add some green beans or other veggies in there, too. If you’re using frozen veggies, allow for a few minutes extra cook time.

Dashboard Cookies

  • 1 can cookie dough or your own recipe
  • Vegetable spray or oil for the cookie sheet

This recipe only works if it’s really hot outside – say 90 degrees – so that the inside of your car gets hot enough (160 degrees) to bake the cookies and kill any salmonella from the eggs. Place the cookie dough on a cookie sheet just like you would if you were baking them in the oven, though you may want to squish them a bit flatter.

Place on your dashboard, preferably in the sun, and shut your car doors so that the heat is trapped in. Leave them alone for about an hour. They won’t brown much but they will cook. Check them after an hour and if they feel done, remove. If not, leave them in there and check every 15 minutes or so.

Alternative: Place the cookie sheet on your manifold and close the hood, making sure that they don’t touch the underside of the hood. Cook on a hot engine for 8-10 minutes.

These are just a few ideas to get you started with using your car for cooking.

Play around with other meals and if you have any good recipe suggestions, add them in the comments section below!

What About The Syrian Refugees?

big Syrian refugees

Ever since the Friday the 13th terrorist attacks in Paris, the news has been filled with reports about the attacks, follow-on attacks and the investigation of those attacks. As of this point, some of the attackers have been identified as Syrian refugees and others have been identified as living in a no-go zone in Belgium.

That makes it very clear that not only was this a Muslim terrorist attack, but that ISIS is using the Syrian refugee crisis as a means of getting fighters into Europe and probably the US.

Tightened security at border crossing points has caused a number of other ISIS stringers to be caught, trying to blend in with the mass of humanity leaving Syria. Eight of them were caught in Turkey, posing as refugees and another five were captured in Honduras. How many more have made it through is anyone’s guess.

We’ve even caught ISIS soldiers trying to enter the United States. Last summer, ten ISIS soldiers were caught in McAllen, Texas, trying to sneak in from Mexico. No doubt some of the Muslims who have committed acts of violence in the United States over the last few years have ties to ISIS and other terrorist organizations, even if those ties were only through the internet.

While Paris was a tragedy, in the larger scheme of things, what it did was put a point on the fact that the Muslim world is moving. No longer is Muslim extremist terrorism something that happens in the shadows or just in the Middle East. Now it’s something that is happening in the western world, and we can expect to see it continue.

In the midst of all this, we have people who are calling themselves refugees, who are fleeing Syria by the hundreds of thousands. They are inundating Europe, largely bypassing the poorer countries to take up residence in the more wealthy ones. The United Nations is helping them, not only by calling them refugees, but by putting pressure on their member nations to take these refugees in, regardless of whatever hardship it might put upon the receiving countries or their citizens.

But nobody really knows who these people are. They aren’t from the areas occupied by ISIS, nor are they even from nearby cities that are likely to come under attack. These supposed refugees are coming from unaffected parts of the country, fleeing nobody knows what; perhaps that’s because they aren’t fleeing from anything, but because they are fleeing to something.

A Trojan Horse Is Heading to Western Civilization

I’ve seen other refugee situations through the years and this one is unique. Most refugees are either families, women with children, orphans, widows or the elderly. This is not the case this time. The refugees pouring out of Syria are 75% military aged men, 13% women and only 12% children.

If this is a true refugee situation, why are there so few women and children? Why are these “men” abandoning their families to go to Europe or the United States? If they are truly men, wouldn’t they be staying to protect their families?

Of course, you can’t bring these uncomfortable truths up to liberals, as they are convinced that anyone who is against allowing refugees into the country is an inhuman racist. They aren’t bothered by the fact that 75% are men, because they don’t want to know those details. They just want to be generous and give away the hard-earned money of the conservatives, to take care of someone who they think is less fortunate than they are.

Okay, so let me ask the question… What is the real danger in letting 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country, even if they are 75% military aged men? After all, there’s no proof that any of them are terrorists or that any of them have ties to terrorist organizations.

First of all, we have the risk of some of them being terrorists or becoming terrorists once they get here. The Islam that is being taught in the mosques today is much different than the Islam of a generation ago. Today, Islam is much more militant, with a goal of conquest and dominion. It wasn’t that way a generation ago. While the Quran hasn’t changed, the focus of those teaching it has. A generation ago, Islam was more peaceful; today, it is violent.

This doesn’t just mean that those who are radical extremists are violent; all Muslims, across the board are leaning more towards violence. Those that aren’t, the “moderates,” are more supporting of those who are violent, accepting the need to conquer the West. Of the Syrian refugees polled, 37% actually support ISIS and the war they are fighting, and oppose to the international coalition against ISIS despite the fact they are seeking help in western countries.

refugees

But even those who are non-violent and who do not support violence are dangerous. Fifty-one percent of the Muslims now in the United States want Sharia Law to replace our laws. What I understand is that they don’t believe in or adhere to the U.S. Constitution, they believe in and adhere to Sharia Law, and they will use every opportunity they can find to force Americans to bow to Sharia Law, rather than accepting that our law is based upon our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

So, even if we were able to perfectly vet the Syrian refugees, only letting in those who had no ties whatsoever to terrorism and terrorist organizations, most of them would still be subversives, bent on overthrowing our system of government and replacing it with their own. Is that any different than allowing in a government operative from some hostile government, who would work to overthrow our system of government? Isn’t that what we are doing?

The Long Term Payment to Be Made

But the problems don’t stop there. Of the refugees being admitted, only 10% have any marketable skill. That means that we are going to be putting more of a strain on our already overworked social “safety net.” These people aren’t coming here to be productive workers, they are coming here to get free handouts; and the Democrats are lining them up to get their freebies, secure in the belief that they will vote Democrat.

Like the refugee crisis last summer, when we had “children” coming from Central America (those children were male and had tattoos to go with their gang affiliations), these are going to help push our country closer to the financial brink. In that sense, they are just one more part of that grand Cloward-Piven strategy that Obama has been running throughout his second term.

The few who can work are just going to take jobs from American workers, just like the others that Obama has been busy importing. While some actually take jobs that Americans won’t take, others will directly replace Americans in the workforce. They will work for lower wages, mostly because wages where they came from were so low. Employers will hire them for that, as they try to keep their own profit margins from disappearing.

Video first seen on vinal vladislav.

There is no upside for America and her citizens from this, unless it is the symbol of looking benevolent upon the world’s stage. Of course, Democrats will always go for that, wanting the warm fuzzy feeling of being seen as the good guys, no matter how many people they have to hurt in the process.

The House of Representatives has already passed a resolution requiring careful screening and vetting of these refugees. As of this writing, it hasn’t passed the Senate. But unless it passes with overwhelming majority, it won’t matter. Obama has already declared that he will veto it. So, Congress needs a 2/3 majority in both houses to override that veto. I would be surprised if the Democrats in the Senate will let that happen, even if it does in the House.

In other words, nothing is going to be done to carefully vet these refugees. Obama is going to let 10,000 Syrians loose in the United States, giving them money and benefits, and not worry a bit about what they are going to do. At the least, they will join the Muslim population’s war against our culture and laws and at the worst, they will commit acts of violence as part of their jihad. Either way, we lose.

Twenty-nine state governors have stood up and said that they won’t allow those refugees to be settled in their states. I’m not all that sure how that’s going to work. Typically, resettlement of refugees is a federal function, working with non-profit organizations. The states can’t stop that.

However, the state governors can prevent any state resources from being used to support the resettling of these people, as well as any state funds from being used to support them. That may be enough to slow the process down and make it more difficult, forcing the issue into the courts. But other than that, there is no legal mechanism in place to protect us.

We the people may have to take things into our own hands, or risk being brutalized by terrorists and social jihadists.

Stretching Your Resources in Uncertain Times

How Do You Save Money?

Guest Post by Jim M

With the cost of everything going up and the future uncertain, stretching your resources and re-purposing items becomes more of a necessity. I am always looking for new ways to get the “max for the minimum.”

Some recent posts here reminded me of some of these things.  My grandparents and parents were a young family when the great depression hit. What kinds of things did they do to make ends meet when things were expensive or scarce?

Unfortunately, many of them who went through this period in time are no longer with us. However, I...

Cold Weather Clothing A Prepper’s Guide to Staying Warm in Harsh Conditions

by Andrew Skousen and Joel Skousen, authors, Strategic Relocation and The Secure Home

Threats of the Cold:

Every year people die during the cold and storms of winter because of lack of preparation. Motorists get stuck in blizzards and succumb to the cold when their fuel runs out and old people freeze when their furnace stops working during a power outage. These kinds of deaths will be much more prevalent if war and/or an EMP strike brings down the national power grid for a time (a few months if we’re lucky, a year if the establishment doesn’t get their act together).

For survival...

Monday Miscellany News Brief

How To Remove Pesticides From Food

big pesticides

Even if all of your food is organic, you still need to wash it. If your food isn’t organic, you definitely need to clean it thoroughly before you eat it. Here’s a little gem for you though: there are some foods that you can’t cleanse of pesticides because they grow right in or are absorbed through the skin.

We’ll talk about those foods as well because if you’re serious about avoiding pesticides, you’ll need to buy those foods from the organic section.

Even if you’ve purchased organic foods, it’s still needed to wash them, if for no other reason than that there have been so many hands on them from farm to your fridge. Pickers, sorters, drivers, unloaders, grocery store employees, shoppers…the list just goes on. You don’t know where all of those hands have been – wash your produce before you eat it!

Bought Washes versus Homemade Washes

To begin, let’s start with the proper way to wash pesticides off of the outside of vegetables. There are numerous store washes that you can buy. Some are natural and others aren’t. As a matter of fact, some of the cleansers have harsh cleansers that almost make me decide which is worse to eat – the pesticide or the detergent!

None of the commercial products are as inexpensive as the natural, homemade ways to do it, either.

The first, and most beneficial, way to wash pesticides from your produce is to put your produce in a bowl so that it’s covered with a solution of one part white vinegar and four parts water. Let them soak for up to an hour, then rinse well under running water, scrubbing if possible. Experts have shown that this solution not only effectively removes many pesticides; it also kills up to 98 percent of bacteria. That means that you have less chance of getting sick and your produce will last longer.

Of course, this method is effective for all produce because it gets into the nooks and crannies of veggies like broccoli.

To be perfectly honest, there’s no way to get all of the pesticides off of your produce. The only study that I could find regarding veggie washes was once conducted at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station way back in 2000. What they found was that scrubbing the vegetables under plain water removed as many pesticides as the top veggie cleaners and Palmolive dish soap.

Another study done by the University of Florida in 2003 showed that vinegar killed about 90 percent of bacteria, including E. Coli, and 95 percent of viruses. Studies since then have confirmed that vinegar is a definitely an antibacterial and antiviral, so it’s likely that the reason most people recommend the vinegar wash is a combination of the scrubbing to remove the pesticide and the vinegar to kill the gross stuff.

You may have noted a gaping hole above – nothing removes ALL pesticides, even from the outer skin of produce. If you really want to get all of the pesticides off the outside of the produce, you’re going to need to peel it.

When it comes to pesticides on produce, all are not equal. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) works to make both the planet and the people on it healthier by providing information backed by research. Each year they conduct a study that evaluates pesticide levels on over 3000 pieces of produce in an attempt to find a balance between a consumer’s health and their wallet.

The produce is tested for all sorts of pesticides – for example, in 2013, there were 165 different pesticides found! The theory here is that there are two lists. The Dirty Dozen lists the fruits and vegetables that tested positive for the highest levels of pesticides. They also add a “plus” list for two or three of the ones next in line that didn’t make the list. This list is comprised of produce that you should purchase organic.

The second list is called The Clean 15. These are the fruits and vegetables that tested for the lowest amounts of pesticides. These fruits and veggies are OK to buy in the traditional section of the store. I’ll get into more detail when we discuss the lists.

The 2015 Dirty Dozen

Some of the top findings this year: 99 percent of apples, 98 percent of peaches and 97 percent of nectarines sampled tested positive for at least one type of pesticide residue. Potatoes had more pesticides by weight than any of the other produce tested.

One grape sample and one sweet bell pepper sample had at least 15 pesticides and individual samples of nectarines, peaches, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and imported snap peas had a whopping 13 different pesticides each – all on one piece off produce!

So, without further ado, the Dirty Dozen List:

  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Celery
  • Spinach
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Snap Peas
  • Potatoes
  • Hot Peppers – plus list
  • Kale/Collard Greens – plus list

As you can see, not even half of these fruits and veggies can be peeled, so it’s just best to buy organic.

pesticideshittingyou

The Clean Fifteen

This is the list that contains the cleanest fruits and veggies. The EWG considers these to be the safest foods to buy in the non-organic section. As a matter of fact, sometimes buying items from this list is just a waste of money because the small amounts of pesticides actually found on them can be rinsed off, or are at such low levels that they’re irrelevant.

Some key findings: Only 1 percent of avocado samples showed any trace of pesticides at all. 89 percent of pineapples, 82 percent of kiwi, 80 percent of papayas, 88 percent of mangoes and 61 percent of cantaloupes had no pesticide residues at all. None of the samples on this list contained more than 4 types of pesticides and only 5.5 percent of the samples had two or more pesticides.

In short, these fruits and veggies are clean. Buy the conventional versions of them, take them home, wash them with some vinegar water to get rid of yuck bugs, then enjoy them! Don’t waste your money on organic versions!

The List:

  • Avocados
  • Sweet Corn
  • Pineapples
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet Peas
  • Onions
  • Asparagus
  • Mangos
  • Papayas
  • Kiwi
  • Eggplant
  • Grapefruit
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cauliflower
  • Sweet Potatoes

Another point that many people fail to take into consideration is that chemicals affect kids differently than they do adults due to developmental issues. Kids are still growing. Central nervous systems, brains, endocrine systems and digestive systems still aren’t fully developed. The EWG has a ton of great information that will help you make smart choices for your kids, too.

The bottom line is that you can’t wash all of the pesticides off of your produce. If you want to insure that you’re not getting any pesticides (at least any added pesticides), then you need to buy organic or grow your own food. The Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 are great places to start. And if you decide to grow your own organic food, you still have means for pest control without using chemicals.

If you have anything that you’d like to add to this list, please feel free to do so in the comments section below!

Let Congress Know That You Support H.R. 3314, the Resettlement Accountability National Security Act of 2015

After posting my article “Refugee… The Seldom Talked About Cost To The U.S. Economy And Tax Payer” a couple of days ago, a lot of readers mentioned Rep. Brian Babin’s H.R. 3314, the Resettlement Accountability National Security Act of 2015.

According to Newsmax

Under Babin’s proposal, the bill would include a 120-day moratorium of the program permitting refugees from Syria, the Middle East, and North Africa to settle in the U.S. unless Congress reinstates the program by joint resolution.

Everyone should contact their Congressional Representatives to let them know that...

The Age Of Offense

BIG age of offense

I wonder what anthropologists in the future will think, looking back on 2015 and reading our newspapers. If there is anything that has stood out this year, it’s that the year can be called the Year of Offense. American liberals have fallen all over themselves in an effort to be offended and to scream about their offense, to the point where it seems to overrun the real news all too often.

It was bad enough when the #BlackLivesMatter movement started, raising an outcry only drowned out by their own violence every time a black criminal was killed by a white police officer.

Then it started getting ridiculous when they got offended by the southern Civil War Battle Flag. That led to offenses for every monument and reminder of the Civil War that ever existed. Now, it’s reached a point where students in colleges and universities are being offended by anything said, which doesn’t agree with their narrow world view.

These claims of “microagressions” have reached a point where universities are at the brink of not being able to operate anymore. The University of Missouri has been all but shut down, by students protesting a combination of racial prejudice and offense from contrary viewpoints. The football team refused to play, ultimately leading to the President of the university resigning.

In my opinion, the university president was wrong to resign. All he did was prove in the minds of the students that they were right. But the only cases of racism that were brought up as “evidence” that the university was racist, were things done by individuals, not the university itself. Those aren’t the fault of the university, although resigning over them makes it look like the president took responsibility for them.

What he should have done is to kick all the striking football players off the team; but he apparently didn’t have the guts to do so. Their scholarship contract specifically states that they have to participate in all team activities, or lose their scholarships and their places on the team. Had he stood up to the football team, instead of caving to their demands, the situation may have ended.

But he didn’t. So now we have a hunger strike by a student who claims that he is the victim of racial discrimination. Of course, he and the mainstream news media is hiding the facts that his dad made over six million dollars last year and his net worth is over 20 million.

I guess that just doesn’t fit their picture of a poor, disadvantaged black student, who is being mistreated by the horrible white establishment of the school.

True or Not True?

So much of this anymore is about creating images that support the progressive left’s agenda. Truth is no longer an issue in news reporting or even in life. As long as it supports their agenda, it’s okay, regardless of what that means has to be done.

Apparently there are two issues being complained about in Missou. One is the racial discrimination and the other is microagressions causing offenses. The two seem to be intertwined, but each can stand on its own as well.

It doesn’t really matter, as it’s all about having the right buzzwords and the right image anyway. Apparently they think that if they can make themselves out to be the mistreated underdog, then they will win. Nothing else matters.

This has been coming for quite some while. I mentioned how liberals have been seeking offense everywhere they turn. It’s almost become a game with them, seeing who can come up with the newest thing to call “racist” or to be offended about. Both are the same, considering that the word “racism” now means whatever they want it to mean in order to back up their point.

Racism has become the liberal trump card. In their minds, all they have to do is play that card and they’ve automatically won. So, they play it as frequently and as loudly as they can. Unfortunately, this has scared many conservatives, who are thinking of what “racism” used to mean and don’t want to be branded with that name.

The students at Missou have been effective enough in their demonstrations that they’ve managed to spread their offense off campus. There are now at least three other campuses which have decided that they have the same grievances as the University of Missouri, even though those grievances haven’t really been clearly stated. That doesn’t matter though, as they are in agreement and standing together with their fraternal brothers and sisters at Missou.

So, what are their grievances? I haven’t been able to get much of a handle on them, but there are a couple of things that have stood out.

The first is that the President of University of Missouri was white. Apparently since all whites, especially white males are racist, that makes the university racist. To go with that, there aren’t enough black college professors on campus to make the black students feel comfortable. Obviously this is a crime of the highest order and must be addressed.

If we assume for a minute, that the university was avoiding hiring black professors, could it be that not enough blacks applied for those positions? I have no idea of how many black college professors there are, but maybe there aren’t enough to go around. Could it be that this horrendous crime is more an indictment against the black community than against the university? Oops, we’d better not go there.

The other big issue that has come up is the whole issue of offenses. Apparently modern college students have evolved to the point where they can’t stand a contrary opinion. Anything that opposes their world view, spoon fed to them by their liberal professors, causes them to go running and screaming back to their “safe zone” where they don’t have to hear such disturbing things.

This is an indictment on our entire educational system, especially at the secondary and pre-graduate levels. If there is anything that college students should be exposed to, it’s contrary opinions. How else are they ever going to be able to make a rational decision for themselves, about what they believe?

Or have our institutions of higher learning turned into institutions of higher indoctrination? Has the idea of making sure that the next generation be politically correct overcome the need to educate them? Are college professors so afraid that a contrary idea might actually be more attractive to their students than the liberal milk they’ve been feeding them? If their liberalism is so great, then why can’t it stand up to those contrary ideas?

The real danger here is that by shielding those children from other ideas, the universities are keeping them children. They are unable to think for themselves. Even worse, they are unprepared for facing real life, when they get out of college. How is a young man or young woman going to face a boss, when that boss tells them to do something that they don’t want to do? Are they going to cry and run to their safe zone? Will they quit?

Or are they going to file a law suit against their boss for offending them? I’m pretty sure that I’ve been offended by every boss that I ever had, how are these oversensitive children going to fare in the workplace?

It’s sad that our society has been reduced to this point. One of our founding principles is freedom of speech. That concept is enshrined in the very First Amendment to the Constitution. Not that it was added later, for the Continental Congress refused to vote it into law, without the Bill of Rights, the first ten Amendments to the Constitution. That’s how far back our right of Freedom of Speech goes.

Where the Real Danger Lies

Yet Freedom of Speech is in real danger today. Political correctness is striving to destroy it. Left-wing politicians are talking about limiting Freedom of Speech, so that people not be offended.

Of course, the only ones they are concerned about protecting from offense are their left-wing supporters. As they have so clearly demonstrated, they couldn’t care less if those on the right are offended. That’s immaterial, because those on the right are automatically labeled “racist.”

Freedom of Speech means that people will be offended. It means that contrary opinions will be raised up. That’s good. For it is in the crucible of discussing and debating those different opinions that great ideas are formed.

Ideas that cross political boundaries and bond us together into a society that works for all of us, rather than just for some of us. Without that discussion, only the ideas of the ruling party are allowed and freedom is lost.

Perhaps that’s the idea; perhaps the whole PC argument is nothing more than a way of taking away our freedom and making us bow down to the inevitability of liberal control. We need our Freedom of Speech, just as much as we need to be offended by other people’s ideas.

For through that offense, we can begin to see their viewpoint, their lives and their struggles. Only then, can we become part of the solution in finding a system which works for all.
