Prep Blog Review: 4th of July Special – American Ways

pbr 1 july

In anticipation of our Monday celebration, I’m counting down the very best survival tips, from the pioneers, till the depression era’s forced creativity.

Go through them, find recipes you can try, maybe new things you can use, and add them to your list of why you’re proud to be an American.

To all of you, a peaceful 4th of July!

1. Pioneer Recipes, Our Ancestors used

pioneer

“When we have to live off our food storage, we will have to adapt to a diet that is similar to what our pioneer ancestor ate. Since we will not have the prepared food, or the variety we are used too, it will benefit us to know how they cooked.  Here are some examples of pioneer recipes.”

2. 26 Depression Era Recipes You Can Use for Survival

“Most people who are preparing for a future economic collapse or SHTF event realize that life as it is today could be radically altered. One of the main things that will change radically if the world experiences another severe economic collapse due to an EMP event or another extended grid-down situation will be diet and cooking methods.

Many preppers are looking to the tried and true recipes of the Great Depression period which began in August 1929 and lingered through approximately 1941 in the United States and Europe. It was the worst recession of the Western industrialized world. It truly altered the way of life for many families. Vegetable gardens were nurtured, clothing was patched and repaired for longer wear, and several generations of families often lived together out of necessity.”

3. Lost Remedies from Our Forefathers

forefather

“Often my grandmother’s remedies worked faster and more effectively than conventional treatments. These lost remedies can treat and improve a variety of conditions. Whether you have a headache, stomachache, or sore throat, you can quickly find something around the house to relieve pain.”

4. 15 Vital Items The Pioneers Stockpiled For Hard Times

pioneers

“We tend to think that stockpiling food and supplies for an emergency is a modern invention. But it’s not. It actually started thousands of years ago, with people stockpiling food for a snowy day. Those ancestors of ours knew something that most of us today have forgotten: the fact that winter comes every year and you can’t grow crops or hunt game very effectively when the freeze hits.”

5. Storing Dairy Without a Fridge

ancestors

“What about the milk and eggs? If you have a food stockpile, then at some point you probably asked yourself this question. Most people purchase milk and eggs every week, and the only place you can keep them is in the refrigerator. So how are you supposed to stock up on these things when they go bad so quickly? And how are you supposed to store them if there’s no power for the refrigerator? In this article, we’re going to explore a few options for storing dairy.”

Ropes And Knots: Basics for Survival and Everyday Use

Survivopedia knots and ropes

There’s good reason our military have trained men to tie them for generations. Knots has always been a skill the inexperienced take for granted, but any experienced outdoorsman, has had enough successes (and failures) to know there’s always a good knot, but only if the rope maintains its quality.

If you use the wrong knot, or type of rope, it could lead to a disaster. For safety sake know what knots, and rope materials to use.

Over the years knot tying has become a diverse practice with many specialty designs used in different jobs and occupations. This article will show you how to choose and care for rope, and prepare it for tying 13 of the most important knots for survival needs.

Subscribe to our newsletter (link available at the end of the article) and you’ll have access to one valuable free report with tutorials about 13 knot tying basics for survival and everyday use.

What Kind of Rope to Use?

Before you can do any knot tying, you must know which rope to use, and how much weight the rope can support vs the expected load weight. Also be aware of the condition of the rope, and which knot to use for the application.

There are four basic types of commonly available rope:

  • Laid Rope is made from natural and synthetic fibers. These fibers are often twisted into yarns, then into strands, and finally twisted into rope. This is done in such a way that the twists are equalized so the rope is stable but flexible. Although laid rope patterns are very common and good for making knots, they are not recommended for rapelling, suspending heavy weights, or for long term durability. Each time you use the rope or put weight on it, the fibers will rub into each other and wear excessively internally. This can be very hard to spot and spell disaster if it breaks at the wrong moment. Laid rope is still the easiest for knotting and you can start off with it until you master the basic steps for each knot.
  • Sash Cord or Clothesline – Is woven of cotton and glazed with starch or other filler. It is unreliable and clumsy for knot tying and also not good for applications other than hanging clothes.
  • Woven Rope – Synthetic fibers are often woven or braided into line or rope in smaller diameters. Some braided ropes may also have non-woven or specialty fiber cores that will not rub and wear as quickly as other configurations. In terms of survival needs, you should choose several different kinds of braided rope and then practice making knots with them so that you are always ready for any situation. You should also know how to prevent unraveling, which is done by fusing with a flame or hot iron instead of whipping.
  •  Binder twine is too weak to be used in knots where strength is needed and should be avoided.

paracord

How to Care for Your Rope

How people care for their rope depends on the individual. Some people totally neglect the rope leaving it without whipped ends, unraveling, or trailing in the water if used in boating. Then you have those individuals that are very obsessive. They take rope care way beyond what a normal person would do.

Always give your rope a good inspection at the time you buy it and inspect it regularly as well as before each use.

Basic Rope Care Guide

Do you know what the life expectancy of your rope is? Rope manufactures have recommended retirement schedules that state the life of a rope. How long you will use a rope depends on your own inspection, knowledge of the rope’s history, and assessment of the rope.

In order to prolong its life, always keep your rope off the ground to protect it from dirt containing sharp small chips and crystals. If dirt or sharp bits of debris get into the rope, they can scratch the fibers and weaken them.

Avoid contact with chemicals, acids, bleach, and oxidation agents. Avoid embers, sparks, and matches. And try not to walk on the rope for this may work sharp debris into the rope core.

Even though most modern rope fibers have little nutrition value for rodents, they may still try to get into it or remove bits for nesting. Avoid rodents at all cost.

To preserve a rope when not in use, to keep it supple, and free of kinks, follow the advice below.

  • It should be coiled in the direction of it’s lay.
  • A right handed rope should always be coiled clockwise.
  • A left handed rope should always be coiled counter-clockwise.
  • Never store a coiled rope damp or wet. This will mildew the rope very quickly.
  • Mildew damage only becomes apparent when the rope breaks suddenly.

Be careful your ropes don’t get kinks in them. If they do, the kinks can overtax the fibers of the rope causing a weak spot in the bend of the kink. Wet rope is more likely to kink.

To avoid kinking in rope, lay the coil on the floor with the inside end down. Reach down through the center of the coil. Pull this end up and unwind the coil counter clockwise. If it uncoils in the wrong direction, turn the coil over and pull the end out on the other side.

When removing kinks from rope, the twist can be removed by dragging the rope forwards and backwards along a smooth section of ground. Pulling the rope forwards and backwards around a tree, a pipe, or other straight object.

How To Coil A Rope

To coil a twisted rope to hang on a peg you must do the following:

  •  Never pick up the rope and loop it repeatedly over your arm with the loops dangling from you hand because this puts kinks in the rope.
  • Before starting a coil, shake out the rope in a straight line along the ground to shake out the kinks in the rope.
  • Next, hold one end in your left hand and reaching forward with the right hand to gather enough rope to to make an eighteen inch loop.
  • As you place the loop over the palm of your flatly extended left hand, roll the rope between the thumb and forefinger of your right hand, giving it about a half turn towards your body.
  • This half turn counteracts the twist put in the rope as it was looped and prevents kinking of the rope.

And this is how to uncoil the rope:

  • When playing rope out of a coil, begin with the end in the center of the coil.
  • All coils should be unwound from the inside and in a counter clockwise direction.
  • If the rope uncoils clockwise, The end should be pushed through the center of the coil and played out from the opposite side.

How to Clean Your Rope

  • Ropes should be washed by hand in cold water with a mild soap.
  • Rinse free of the soap.
  • Wet ropes should always be hung out to dry on a pole, ladder, or a tree limb. Do not put the rope in direct sunlight to dry or near a source of heat. Hair dryers, clothes dryers, and other dryers can also ruin rope.
  • Leave the rope hung up and uncoiled until completely dry, then coil the rope.

How to Work the Rope to Prepare for Knotting

If your rope is a cotton braided variety, it will be soft and ready to use when you buy it, and will also become more soft and pliable with use. Manila rope is a good general purpose rope, but it is very tough and stiff when you buy it depending on how tight the lay is.

It will also kink very easily and leave fine slivers of fiber in your fingers. To remove the fibers simply rub the entire rope down with a coarse rag a couple of times. A hard-laid rope is no good to anyone. It must be thoroughly worked until it is reasonably soft and pliable.

How to Tie Knots

All knots and hitches are formed by two or three methods of laying rope: bright, loops, and overhand knots.

Bright is formed by turning the rope so that the end is parallel to the rest of the rope.

1-Bright

Loop is made by crossing the rope end over or under the rest.

1-loop

Overhand knot it’s made by passing the end of the rope through the loop.

1-overhand1 1-overhand2 1-overhand3 1-overhand4

Post Action Adrenal Dump: Using tribal fighting knowledge to make us better

by Jesse Voluntary Mathewson

“From an evolutionary perspective, it’s exactly the response you want to have when your life is in danger: you want to be vigilant, you want to react to strange noises, you want to sleep lightly and wake easily, you want to have flashbacks that remind you of the danger, and you want to be, by turns, anxious and depressed. Anxiety keeps you ready to fight, and depression keeps you from being too active and putting yourself at greater risk. This is a universal human adaptation to danger that is common to other mammals as well. It may be unpleasant, but it’s...

4 Ways To Help Your Plants Survive A Heatwave

Survivopedia plants and heatwave

Plants need sunshine to grow, but when the temperatures are too hot, your plants feel the impact. They can wilt, wither, and eventually die from too much heat.

The best way to prepare your plants is to incorporate protection into your garden plan. You can look for local plant varieties that are proven in your area’s weather.

On your hottest days, you’ll still need to take extra precautions, but picking the right kinds will give your plants a better chance.

You should also plan your garden for heat. Sun map your plot so you know what areas get the most sun. Use taller plants to offer shade to smaller ones. Add trees to your master plan, and use the shade they offer wisely as you plan.

Even if you haven’t planned for hot days, there are steps you can take to protect your plants from a heatwave. These will help ensure you don’t lose your harvest.

Water

wateringThe roots of plants take up water and it’s delivered to the rest of the plant through a variety of veins.

It takes energy for the plant to get the water where it needs to go.

During the hottest part of the day, plants are expending energy simply staying alive in the heat.

They don’t have the energy they need to efficiently move water through their veins.

Mid-day watering may reach the roots, but it’s not likely to travel up the plant to where it’s most needed.

So when you water, make sure it’s in the early morning or evening when the temperatures are a bit lower. This way your watering efforts aren’t wasted.

Since the roots have to get the water, drip irrigation systems help deliver the water where it’s needed. When you water from above, it’s harder for the roots to get as much water. They’re competing with the other plants or weeds in the area, and with evaporation from the sun.

You’re also more likely to cause runoff when you water with a traditional hose or sprinkler. The dry ground takes time to absorb the water. If you apply too much water too quickly, it’ll get the top soil wet and then runoff.

Drip irrigation allows you to slowly water the top soil, and the soil the roots are actually growing in. You want to get that water about 18 inches into the ground. That way the roots can continue to use it once you’ve stopped watering.

During the hottest days, you don’t want to overwater your plants. Moist soil and hot days offer the perfect environment for a variety of fungi and other plant problems. Overwatering encourages their growth.

Plan on soaking your garden once a week, and always test the soil for moisture before watering. Wilted leaves aren’t always a sign that more water is needed. Sometimes, plants wilt in the sun just because of the heat. If your wilted plants look better in the cool evening, they aren’t in need of water.

If you find certain plants do need more water, you don’t need to water everything to save that plant. Just spot water, allowing the water to penetrate the ground into the roots. Applying water correctly will help your plants survive in the heat.

Soil & Mulch

Now that we’ve tackled water, let’s talk about soil and mulch. Some soil holds water better than others. If you have a sandy garden, you’ll probably need to water more often.

Take steps like applying compost to improve your soil, so keep your compost pile going strong to give your plants what they need.

No matter the state of your soil, a good layer of mulch will help hold in water. It’ll also help prevent weeds from growing. That’ll mean fewer plants will be competing for water.

You can use a variety of materials to mulch your garden. By using what you have on hand, you can keep your costs really low. Gardeners have used a thick layer of newspaper, straw, wood shavings, dried grass clippings, or cardboard to mulch plants.

If you use a light colored mulch, you’ll also help keep the sun’s rays from heating the soil too much. A lower temperature in the soil means your plants are more likely to survive.

mulch

Pruning & Fertilizing

A heatwave is not the time for pruning or fertilizing your plants. Both of these activities cause a burst of growth. Your plant will put all of its energy into growing, and won’t be as able to withstand the heat.

You also risk your plant absorbing the fertilizer too quickly, and burning as a result. So save your fertilizing (even with natural fertilizer) for a cooler day.

If you have wilted leaves, don’t prune them off until the heatwave passes. The leaves offer a bit of shade to the stem of the plant, and can help protect it.

Shade

Shade offers much relief to a hot plant. Shade keeps the direct sunlight off of your plants. It’ll also help them lower their temperature, and increase their defenses

For plants that are in containers, planters, or pots, move them into the shade is possible. For plants that are unmovable, you’ll need to look for other ways to get them shaded.

How to Create Shadow for Your Plants

If your garden lacks natural shade from taller plants or trees, you can easily set up some temporary patches using one of these methods:

Cardboard and Stakes

Use stiff cardboard and stakes to set up shade wherever you need it. You can cut the cardboard to the size you need. Then use a heavy duty stapler to attach it to your wooden stakes.

Pound the stake in the ground around your most delicate plants, and they’ll get instant shade. This set-up is inexpensive, easily installed, and highly portable.

Lawn Chairs

If you’re caught with an unexpected heatwave, you can use your patio furniture to protect your plants. Just carefully set up a lawn chair to provide protection. Because of the legs, you may not be able to use this in all garden setups.

If you don’t have any lawn chairs, look around your property for items that are easily moveable and don’t weigh too much. You don’t want to compact your soil as you make shade. Here are some ideas that I’ve used in my garden:

  • A laundry basket
  • A cardboard box
  • A plant pot

Shade Cloths

You can buy shade cloths online or in your local garden center. You can attach this to posts in your garden, or to stakes.

If you’re using dark colored shade cloth, keep an eye on your soil temperatures. If the cloth is too close to the ground, you can inadvertently bake your plants.

Paper Bags

You can gently pull a paper bag over your plants. You’ll want to staple or tape the end closed to keep it from flying off.

You don’t want to obstruct air flow for too long however, so be sure to remove these bags as soon as the heat of the day has passed.

Wood Lattice with Bricks

If you have a piece of wood lattice and bricks, you can make shade. You’ll want to make four stacks of bricks, one for each corner of the lattice. Place these where you need it, and then set the lattice on top. This method is especially useful for newly sown seeds and low crops.

What Plants Need Shade the Most?

If you aren’t able to shade your entire garden, you’ll want to prioritize your plants. Some plants will bolt if they overheat, while others may wither a bit, but will bounce back.

Here are some of the plants you’ll want to be extra careful with in a heatwave:

  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Peas
  • Cilantro
  • Cauliflower and Broccoli
  • Any cool weather crops

If your area is typically hot, you should hold off planting these heat-sensitive plants until closer to fall’s cooler weather. During the hot sun, plant your heat-loving plants like tomatoes, corn, and melons. That way you take advantage of natural growing patterns that each plant needs.

light

Wilted Plants

Sometimes even with your tender loving care, plants wilt. It’s a reaction when the plant leaves are shedding water faster than the roots can get it up the stem. It’s a natural phenomenon similar to the way humans sweat. It helps the plants protect themselves.

Smaller, or freshly transplanted plants are more likely to wilt in the sun. That’s because their root system isn’t as established yet.

Usually, your plants will bounce back on their own once the temperatures drop. You’ll notice that they look normal in the evenings, and then wilt when the sun returns to high in the sky.

If your plants are still wilted in the evening, double check that their soil is moist. If not, give the thirsty plant a nice long drink to saturate the roots.

If watering doesn’t help, you’ll also want to ensure that you aren’t dealing with root rot. This can cause wilting leaves as well.

Is it hot where you are?

What are your best tips for keeping your garden growing strong even in the summer heat? I know our readers would love to hear what works for you, so please share in the comment section.

Did Britain Make a Mistake Leaving the EU?

Don Boys, Ph.D.

Well, they did it! Great Britain ripped up their 40-year-old membership card in the European Union and may become “Great” Britain again: you know, sovereignty, security, and stability. Britain was a major player in the European Union, a bloc of 28 nations, making it the biggest trading zone in the world. Membership in the EU permits citizens of one nation to travel and live in other member-nations.

Last year, Britain received almost 350,000 immigrants and about half of them were from other EU nations. And British officials could not give any assurance that they could...

Brexit; Why Should You Care?

Survivopedia brexit

On Thursday, June 23rd, the citizens of Great Britain voted on the long-awaited question of leaving the European Union (EU), commonly referred to by the nickname of “Brexit.”

Surprising just about the entire chattering class, and not a few progressive-liberal politicians, the people of Great Britain made their voice heard, declaring in a 52-48 majority that they wanted to take their opportunity and leave, abandoning the European Union.

Interestingly enough, the voting for and against Brexit was largely along age-defined lines. Millenials voted strongly in favor of staying in the European Union, while their parents voted strongly in favor of leaving. Fortunately for the parents, they still outnumbered their kids.

Nevertheless, so many millennials voting in favor of staying in the European Union is troubling. Just like American’s millennials voting in favor of socialism, this shows how much the younger generation has been brainwashed by the propaganda being fed them in their schools.

Considering that the liberals all but own the educational system, you can be sure that what they are being taught is in line with liberal ideology and talking points.

That should raise a very important question in your mind. That is, why is keeping Great Britain in the European Union so important to liberals? One would normally think that it wouldn’t make any difference, as it doesn’t have a thing to do with the normal causes that liberals are always babbling about.

But in reality, this is right at the core of progressive-liberal thinking. You see, the liberalism of today isn’t anything like the liberalism of 40 years ago. Today, it’s all about conformity. Back in the 60s, when liberalism really made its name known, liberalism was about bucking the system. Somehow, the tables have been turned.

votes

What this has done is to suborn many people who are by heart non-conformists into a system that is hell-bent on forcing them, and everyone else, to conform. Conform to what? To the ideals of the progressive-liberal movement.

Behind the Scenes

To understand this, you have to look beyond the liberal rhetoric and political posturing, to see what they do in secret. In public, they voraciously defend the poor, the weak and the minorities. But in private, they are all about liberal elitism and how they must be in control.

In their snobbery and self-righteousness, they are convinced that they are the only ones who have the capability to rule the world. The rest of us are mere peasants, who should give our freedom over to them.

Of course, much of this happens behind the scenes, where it is not obvious to the casual observer. Some of it is even in secret, like the meetings of organizations like the Bilderberg Group.

Few realize it, but the Bilderberg Group is the true motivating factor behind the European Union. Publicly, many other reasons have been given for creating the Union, specifically creating a economic entity large enough and powerful enough to compete with the economy of the United States of America. But what’s put forth for public consumption is rarely the true reason behind anything done by politicians and other movers and shakers.

While little is known about the Bilderberg Group, there is a little bit of information that gets out. More can be inferred by their actions, such as looking at the individuals who are invited to attend their annual conferences.

The first thing we can tell from that, is that they are a progressive-liberal organization. That’s clear, simply because they never invite conservatives to participate with them. But the most important thing to know about them, is that they are the driving force behind the establishment of a one world government.

Creating the European Union was the first step towards creating that one-world government. As the first of seven projected regional governments, it was the model they would use for establishing the other six. Next on their list is to create the North American Union. But now, they’ve run into a bit of a setback.

Members of the Bilderberg Group have come forth to say that Brexit could set their plans back by 70 years. If we needed any evidence to show that they were behind the creation of the European Union, that would be it. Now, they are looking to their hole card, trying to decide how to mitigate the damage that the British subjects have done to their plans.

But the damage to their plans isn’t over yet. Four other countries, France, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands started to talk about organizing similar polls. In addition, there has been some talk about Greece leaving for a while, but that wouldn’t be because they want to, but because they would be forced out due to their financial troubles.

So, what has caused all this turmoil?

More than anything, it’s because of the EU forcing multiculturalism on their member nations. Specifically, forcing them to accept large numbers of unveted refugees as immigrants. While some are legitimate refugees, there has been a lot of doubt from the beginning as to the motivation of a lot of them.

It is clear, from the increases in terrorism and individual attacks, especially against women, that many of these supposed refugees aren’t truly what they claim to be.

It’s important to understand that the Qur’an doesn’t allow migration in the normal sense of the word. Muslims aren’t allowed to move to a country which isn’t controlled by Muslims. However, there is one caveat; they are commanded to move to non-Muslim countries for the purpose of subverting those countries and converting them to Islam.

In other words, the millions of “refugees” who are fleeing Syria can all be divided into three groups: terrorists, cultural jihadists and unfaithful Muslims. Since Muslims kill other Muslims who are unfaithful, it’s doubtful that many of them fall into this category. That only leaves the other two.

This is what the subjects of Great Britain are trying to avoid. They are already seeing their country and their culture destroyed by the Muslims who are there; people who refuse to assimilate and instead demand that England change to accommodate them.

It’s no wonder that the English people are up in arms about that. They have their own culture and civilization and they don’t want it suborned to Islam.

stats about muslims

But I think there’s something else going on here as well. That is a renewed sense of national pride. If there has ever been anything in history that will get people beating a patriotic drum, it’s to attack their nation’s sovereignty. Well, the progressive-liberals have been helping the Muslims to attack the sovereignty of country after country, especially in Europe and the United States.

Multiculturalism and sovereignty are diametrically opposed to one another, especially the type of multiculturalism that is being practiced today. The liberal political leaders in the United States and European countries have all but denied their own countries, as they have fallen all over themselves in allowing Muslims free-reign in their countries.

That has, in turn, created an outcry from the average person on the street. While the “elite” are busy bowing and scraping to the Muslims, allowing them to commit atrocities without any recrimination, the average people are fed up with being victimized by those Muslims who are not acting like civilized people.

They are gathering together to stand against the Muslim invasion, whether by forming vigilante groups to patrol the streets and keep women safe, or by voting to leave the European Union as Britain did.

But this might not be anywhere near over. Not only has Brexit sparked a wave of interest in seceding from the European Union, but it has also sparked renewed interest in states which have discussed seceding in the past. Texas, more than any other state, has a number of active secession groups, with the number of their members rising.

Why Should We Care?

What do the two have in common? Quite a bit, actually. Britain is leaving the European Union over the oppressive regulations being created by a burdensome central government, the exact same thing that many Texans (and other Americans) see happening here in the United States.

The only difference is that our oppressive regulations are coming out of Washington, not out of the North American Union. But either way, it is stealing people’s freedom, in order to allow others to receive special treatment.

You can only give some people special treatment at the cost of others for so long. Eventually, those who are being taken from will rise up in rebellion. It happened once before in our country, and it could very well happen again.

All in all, I’d have to say that Brexit is healthy for Britain and healthy for the rest of the world as well. It may very well become a watershed event, which triggers greater freedoms throughout the world, as others follow suit and throw off oppressive governments.

Should that be so, the British will have done the world a great service, furthering the cause of freedom in a way that has never been done before; in the voting booth.

How to make your own apple cider vineger

Today we present another article in our non-fiction writing contest – By Maddie

We all know the health benefits of real apple cider vinegar-and just how expensive it is. I decided to make some and used information from a couple of older books. It is easy to do and you don’t need a cider press, just patience as the fermenting and souring process take time.

CAUTION!! Remember that any vinegar you use in canning must be 5% acidic to be safe. Do not use city water because the chlorine will kill your bacteria and yeast. Do not use metal containers – only glass, plastic or ceramic...

Healthy Low Carb Foods To Stockpile For Survival

Survivopedia low carbsThere are 3 types of nutrients that your body can convert to energy: carbs, fats, and protein.

Carbs are the primary source for most of us but the problem is that they burn up quickly, leaving us hungry and run-down an hour or so after we eat them. Good fats and proteins, on the other hand, burn slowly so they provide level, sustained energy.

Obviously, there are situations that call for each type, but the big thing with carbs is that you need to choose the RIGHT ones, which is a topic for another day. Today, we’re going to talk about good sources of low-carb foods (aka, high protein/fat foods).

Just as with carbs, there are good and not-so-good sources of proteins and fats. The debate about this is hot, especially when it comes to saturated fats such animal fats.

Your body is hardwired to use carbs as the first source of energy because they’re quick and easy to break down. When it doesn’t have carbs (or during prolonged exercise), it turns to fat, and then protein. You don’t want to push yourself to the point that your body is using protein as a fuel source exclusively, because it’s literally eating your muscle away.

Instead, use protein to build and repair muscles, and use fat as your energy source. Your body needs glucose (sugar) for proper brain function, but it doesn’t need it in large quantities or from junk sources. Fruits and veggies provide the carbs your body needs.

We’ve  all heard how eating too much red meat or eggs raises cholesterol and increases your risk of heart disease, but now there are studies that suggest that meat wasn’t necessarily the culprit – it was other foods that were eaten in conjunction with the meat.

No matter what you think about meat, you probably agree that there are far worse foods in the junk-carb category than steak and eggs. Anyway, now studies are showing that many of these proteins are good for you.

Since it takes your body longer to break down protein and fat, you won’t get that pop of energy that you get from carbs, but your energy levels will remain steady for much longer and you won’t suffer from the crash that you get from carbs. There are many great sources of low-carb foods to stockpile for survival.

low carb

(Fairly) Lean Meat and Poultry

Meats such as lean beef, venison, lamb, bison, rabbit, goat, and lean pork cuts provide are amazing sources of protein and vitamin B12, and generally have zero carbs. Sufficient amounts of this vitamin are found almost exclusively in fish and animal-sourced foods.

Vitamin B12 is critical to human health. It plays a role in the health of every single cell, including brain cells, in your body. Deficiencies are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, anemia, impaired brain function, mental disorders an even a decreased brain size.

Vitamin D3 is another vitamin that’s exclusive to animals. D2 is found in plants but isn’t as bioavailable as D3 is. Your brain needs this for proper function and it also plays a role in nutrient absorption. Typically you get all the D you need from the sun, but if you’re forced to hunker down, it may become an issue.

Add that to the energy that you get from the meat and it’s a no-brainer that these are necessary for your food stockpile. You can pressure can your meat, dehydrate it, or buy it in bulk freeze-dried containers. You can also farm your own or hunt for it so that you have fresh meat.

Fish

Fish is great for you. Even when red meat was the scourge of society, fish was still on the happy face list. It’s also basically carb-free and easy to source as long as you live near a water source and the water isn’t tainted.

All fish are good sources of protein but fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sardines provide Omega 3 fatty acids that are essential for numerous bodily functions, including brain function.

Be careful eating fish that are higher on the food chain, though, because they also likely have high amounts of mercury, which can poison you in high amounts. Shoot for wild-caught fish instead of farmed fish to help with this. Wild-caught fish also have a better Omega 3/Omega 6 ratio, which is also another article altogether.

You can pressure can fish (or buy it canned for fairly cheap), smoke it, catch it fresh, or buy it freeze-dried. It doesn’t last well when dehydrated because of the fat content. It’s probably easier to just buy the cans of tuna and salmon.

Eggs and Milk

Eggs are another excellent, low-carb (zero) source of protein, Vitamins D and B12, phosphorus and riboflavin. and they’re extremely versatile. Eggs are also a source of Omega 3s and the amino acid lutein, which your body needs to build muscle.

The best thing about them when it comes to prepping is that it’s available in three extremely user-friendly forms. You can either reach under your own hen and get a fresh one, or you can buy it powdered or freeze-dried.

Dairy Products

Yeah, I know the counter-argument to this already – humans are the only mammals that drink milk post-weaning. Blah. I’m a farm girl – give me fresh cream in my coffee and a huge scoop of cottage cheese on my tomatoes any day, and for heaven’s sake don’t mention this argument to my dad unless you want to set him off on a 3-hour tangent.

High-fat dairy, just like anything else, is only bad for you if it’s ALL you eat. It’s low-carb and has some excellent nutritional benefits, including being a great source calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein.

It also has amino acids in it that your body needs to synthesize muscle, and cultured dairy such as yogurt (unsweetened!) has probiotics that help keep your gut healthy. Omega 3s are also in there, though not in nearly the quantity that you’ll find in fish or nuts.

You can actually make and can your own butter as well as milk. You can make yogurt at home.

If you’ve looked into making cheese, you’ve probably noticed that many of them require rennet, which isn’t exactly something that most people keep on hand. There are, however, several cheeses that don’t require it, including mozzarella, cottage cheese, cheddar, and cream cheese. In fact, you can make these cheeses right at home in very little time.

The best part is that if you keep cows or goats, you can have a steady supply of milk. If not, you can buy it powdered or freeze-dried, or use the other methods in the article that I linked you to.

Vegetables

I’m not even going to touch on the health benefits of vegetables; otherwise we’d be here all night. Instead, I’m going to tell you which ones are the lowest in carbs and highest in nutrients.

Before I do that, though, I need to explain how the carbs in veggies and fruits affect your body differently than those from wheat or sugar. Vegetables and fruits are typically extremely high in fiber, which means that your body has to work hard to digest it. Because of this, the sugar is released slowly instead of all once.

A good rule of thumb is that if a veggie is green, it’s low-carb. Other veggies, such as yellow peppers, cabbage, and cauliflower are also good. Even if a veggie is higher in carbs, such as carrots and tomatoes, see above.

Root veggies and tubers such as potatoes and rutabaga are high in carbs, so if you’re shooting specifically for a low-carb diet, skip them.

I’ve written an article about the best way to stockpile veggies here.

Fruits

Fruits are iffy when it comes to inclusion on a low-carb list. The general rule here is that the higher in fiber and the less sweet a fruit is, the lower it is in carbohydrates. Fruits are like veggies, though. The more fiber they have, the slower the body extract the sugar, so you don’t get the carb pop and crash.

Good fruits include apples, pears, berries, and citrus fruits.

Again, preserving fruits is fairly simple. You can water-bath can them, pressure can them, freeze dry them, or dehydrate them, but if you’re shooting for low-carb, don’t add sugar to them. They are another healthy foods to stockpile for winter.

Preparing fruits and vegetables, and even meat for that matter, all involve a similar process that just about anybody can learn to do.

Nuts and Seeds

These are great because they’re easy to pack and take with you if you need to bug out or even if you’re just going on a short hunting or camping trip. Many nuts, including walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds are rich in omega 3s too, so win-win!

Fats and Oils

Having a good supply of fairly healthy fats is necessary for a variety of reasons. They’re rich in omega 3s and they’re a necessary ingredients (well OK, you CAN substitute apple sauce in some baking recipes, but not for the good stuff like biscuits.

You can also can fats and seeds are simple to store. These definitely need to go on your list.

1_620x110_1Now that you have a general idea of some low-carb foods for survival, please feel free to mention any that I may have forgotten in the comments section below!
