What Did You Do To Prep This Week

Well, folks, here we are again and I have some good news to report… most of you probably remember that after Trump was elected that I reported seeing a downturn in interest in prepping, well, apparently it was only temporary because I’m now seeing a huge increase in interest and the jump in website traffic to prove it.

Over the past two weeks, there has been a big increase in search from the search engines like google for prepper terms that have led readers to this site and other site owners that I correspond with have seen the same uptick in interest and thus traffic to their...

Rhyme Sublime for Christmas Time

Written by Wild Bill on The Prepper Journal.

A Prepper’s version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” (with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore) and to the Survival Blog…..

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the fort
Not a creature was stirring, the sentries report;
The rifles were hung by the gun ports with care,
in hopes that this evening there’d be no warfare.
The mid-watch was nestled all snug in their sacks,
dreaming the Government would get off their backs.
And Mom in her balaclava, and me in my vest,
Had just settled down for a long winter’s rest.

When out by the moat there arose such a clamor,
I took up my rifle and cocked back the hammer.
Away to the window I flew at a run,
Tore open the blast door, and threw up my gun.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave my night-vision scope a clear view of below.
When, what to my quartering eye should appear,
But a miniature MRAP towed by eight tiny reindeer,
With a small turret gunner, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than bullets his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

On Donald, On Steve, on Ben and on Paul,

Dash away, dash away, dash away all!

To the top of the glacis! To the top of the walls!
Now dash away! It’s easy! This isn’t the Mall!”

As liberals that meet ‘The Donald’ will fly,
Quickly to ‘safe-rooms’ where they will cry;
So up to the keep-top the coursers they flew,
With the light armored car – and St. Nicholas too.
And then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each armored hoof.
As I drew in my barrel, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in camo, from his head to his foot,
And his face was all painted with grease stick and soot;
A rucksack of packages flung on his back,
Like a terrorist bomber he opened his pack:
His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples: how merry,
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
He had a broad face, and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

My first inclination was to shoot for the head,
But my wife grabbed my arm so I missed him instead.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk
I near shot again, but she wouldn’t let go
So I gave her the gun and I reached for my bow.
But he moved pretty fast for a fat little fellow;
Jumping in the chimney as I searched for an arrow.
And laying his finger aside of his nose

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.
He sprung to his rig, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew, like the down of a thistle:
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight: Arrrgggg … !!!!

May your Christmas be merry, your holiday bright
And I wish you a joyfully and sweet silent night.
But come down my chimney without my okay,
You’d best be prepared for a fast getaway
because eight reindeer power will not get you free
when you try to outrun a 50-cal BMG

How to Develop a Bug Out Route

by Morgan

bugging out

The prepper community loves to discuss bugging out. It’s one of the most talked about and fantasized about topics. Bugging out is something that definitely needs to be considered and properly planned. There are many reasons someone may need to bug out outside of the zombie apocalypse, such as a train derailment, fire, hurricane, etc.

Bugging in is what we plan to do, and I think what most people plan to do. The only time we would consider bugging out is if we’re forced from our home.

In order to decide when you need to bug out, where you’re bugging out to and all of the other...

How To Survive Winter In The City

The winds of change are blowing, and we need to be ready when they do. In addition to the current political climate, we also have the actual climate to deal with, and for most of us, that means dealing with winter temperatures and conditions.

Surviving a disaster in July is one thing – you may be hot, but you can reasonably take care of yourself in a manner that keeps you alive as long as you have food, water, and shelter with no extra effort.

Winter, on the other hand, is an entirely different survival beast. In some climates, you can be dead within minutes if exposed to the weather without proper attire and equipment.

The two biggest causes that I see, over and over, when somebody gets into trouble or even dies because of winter conditions are lack of knowledge and lack of preparedness. One usually goes hand in hand with the other, but there are those out here who know what to do, but don’t believe anything will happen to them.

Those are the ones who really upset me because they KNEW. So, the first bit of advice that I’m going to offer is this: don’t make the potentially lethal mistake of thinking that it won’t happen to you. If you knock on the pearly gates and ask to interview folks who knew but didn’t prepare, they’ll no doubt tell you one thing: they didn’t think it would really happen.

So, learn from their mistakes.

“Usual” Disasters to Expect in Winter

This is going to depend heavily on your location. If you’re in the northern US, you’re going to see lots of snow, ice, and brutally cold temperatures. If you’re in the southern part of the US, you won’t likely see as much snow, but you may see heavy rains and low temperatures.

Along with that winter weather, there are some “usual” disasters that you should pretty much assume are likely possibilities. These aren’t considering things like WWIII, so account for the big disasters separately!

Frozen Pipes

If you’ve lived through a northern winter in an older house, I bet you can remember at least one morning when you got up, went to turn on the water to make coffee or brush your teeth, and got nothin’. Faucet wide open, but not a drop coming out. Congratulations – you’ve lived through frozen pipes.

Now, this is a situation that can range from inconvenient to financially disastrous depending upon whether they just froze, or if they froze and burst. If they just froze, you have to wait it out. A blow dryer is often helpful, but not always, depending on where it was frozen.

If they burst, look out. It’s going to be expensive and messy. You’re going to have to replace the pipe, plus when it defrosts, you’re going to have water everywhere. Or, depending on where it froze, you may have a burst that leaks immediately.

Frozen Car Doors/Locks

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve gone outside to get in my car and the locks were frozen, or the doors were completely frozen shut. Fortunately, this is a relatively easy fix – buy a house with a garage. Just kidding – there really are a couple of quick fixes.

There are commercial de-icers you can use, but the easiest way is to just find the door that seems the least stuck and push into it all the way down the sides and top in order to pop the ice loose. If this fails, try a hairdryer. If you just force the door open, you risk damaging the seals, so be gentle.

Same thing with the key; don’t torque on it when it’s obviously not working. If the lock freezes, try warming the key, then putting it into the lock because what’s happened is that water’s gotten down in there and frozen the mechanism together. Hand sanitizer works too as long as it’s the alcohol-based type. And again, there are commercial de-icers.

Blizzards

If you’ve ever been through a good blizzard (or a bad one, depending upon your take on blizzards), then you know that they’re deathtraps if you’re not careful.

Just a few concerns that accompany blizzards are:

  • Collapsed roofs
  • Downed powerlines
  • Decreased or no visibility during the storm.
  • Extreme wind
  • Downed trees that can prevent you from leaving the house
  • Deep snowdrifts

Your best bet when you know that a blizzard is coming is to get ready to hunker down. This means:

  • Have your food, water, and meds stockpiled
  • Have plenty of wood ready in a location close enough to the house that you don’t have to go far to get it
  • Have a rope tied from the house to necessary points that you may need to get to outside, such as to the barn or the emergency vehicles
  • Have candles and other non-electrical sources of light handy
  • Have a back-up heat source because there’s a good chance that you’ll lose power in the storm
  • Have plenty of blankets ready

Road Ice

It’s impossible to avoid unless you don’t ever leave the house. At some point in the winter, you’re going to drive on ice. I can’t overemphasize the value of tire chains and caution. Between the two, you have a pretty good chance of getting where you’re going if you absolutely must drive.

If you begin to skid on ice, steer into the skid rather than away from it in order to help you regain control. Don’t hit the breaks – tap them instead. Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you and pay extra close attention to your surroundings. If kids or dogs run out in front of you, your stopping time is going to be much slower than on a dry road.

Power Outages

Losing power in winter can quickly become a critical situation, and the weight of snow on lines frequently causes it. You need to be prepared regardless of whether you live in an apartment or in a farmhouse in the country. You’re going to need two things: at least one source of heat to keep you warm and one to heat up food/water. Lights are nice, too.

I recommend keeping some kind of space heater that doesn’t require electricity, such as a camp heater that runs on oil or propane. Fireplaces are great too, if you have one. Best of all would be a wood-burning stove, if you’re in a place where you can have one.

A Few Suggestions

If you get stuck outside in a survival situation in the summer, you’ll likely survive as long as you can find food and water. Not so in the winter. I know that we’ve talked mostly about city survival, but these rules apply to anywhere.

It’s imperative that the first thing you do if SHTF during the winter is make sure that you have solid shelter and a source of heat that will keep you from freezing to death. Be aware that this is going to be everybody else’s goal too, so if it gets really bad, you want to stay out of sight.

After you have shelter, then it’s time to make sure that you have the other two keys that are critical to your survival: water and food. Hopefully you’ve managed to stockpile enough and are able to just hunker down in your home and wait it out, but if not, have a backup plan. Then have a backup plan for your backup plan.

Contingencies are always a good thing when you’re trying to manage something as fickle as the weather!

Check your supplies, especially the ones in your car, every week or so to make sure that they’re still dry, unfrozen, and in good shape. Nothing would suck more than pulling out the one clean, dry change of clothes you think you have, only to find out that they’ve had a quart of oil leak all over them. Keep track of that!

Surviving winter is a different animal than surviving other times of the year, but if you manage it properly and plan it well, things can most certainly turn out just fine!

Just learn the tricks and be prepared – it’s all you can do!

How Does Gardening Impact Your Personal Growth

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editors Note: Another guest post from Angela Williams to The Prepper Journal. Make note that Round 12 of the Prepper Writing Contest will be posted next week.  A great article to absorb during the madness that is “the holiday season.” We as Preppers understand the physical benefits of our self-sustained food production, but the benefits go far beyond just that.  As always, if you have information for Preppers that you would like to share and possibly receive a $25 cash award as well as be entered into the Prepper Writing Contest with a chance to win one of three Amazon Gift Cards  with the top prize being a $300 card to purchase your own prepping supplies, enter today!

Ask around. You will never find anyone who does not long to live a better life. However, living such a life depends much on the conscious decisions you make. Some people may argue that something they consider as simple and mundane as gardening cannot have any significant effect on an individual’s personal growth. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gardening has everything to do with your personal growth.

The question then is “how does gardening impact your personal growth?” My answer, “in more than one way, gardening has proved to be an active and necessary ingredient in personal growth.” Here are some unique ways in which gardening can make your life better.

Healthier Environment

All over the world, there are calls to “go green”. Gardening allows you to create a micro-climate at and in your home. Why? Because the plants you grow in your garden absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the atmosphere. In turn, such garden plants give out clean oxygen that will revitalize your systems for optimal physical and mental performance. Furthermore, garden plants (as they all “flower”) give off marvelous fragrances that negate some of the terrible smell from man’s and beasts activities. The plants also hold the garden soil together in place and thus reduce soil erosion. Who hates living in a “perfect” environment?

Gardening Heals Naturally

Can one have any appreciable personal growth or derive joy if you are sick or suffering from the smell’s of an industrial world?  I think you cannot.  Gardening will heal you naturally.  The process of preparing your garden, planting, caring for your young plants and harvesting when ready all require physical activity.

Such movements helps reduce obesity from a sedimentary lifestyle; lower your blood pressure and can improve cardiovascular activity. Physical activity also improves blood sugar metabolism, reduces stress, eases muscle tension and lowers bad fat (cholesterol).

There is no denying that the very sight of an arrays of colors (from different flowering plants), greenness and freshness of the atmosphere invoke the feeling of tranquility, peace, and happiness in your mental faculties. In other words, you can live with a somewhat reckless abandon knowing that you have the best of nature on your side to heal common physical and mental problems you might face.

A Sense of Responsibility and Self-Satisfaction

For home gardening to succeed, you must give your plants your personal touch and attention. Having the chance to observe your garden fruits and vegetables grow gradually from seedlings to a mature, fruit-bearing plant will give you a great sense of self-satisfaction. You will love being part of the natural process of procreation or regeneration.

Furthermore, personally tending to your garden and plants (digging, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding and harvesting) will create in you a sentimental attachment and thus a greater sense of responsibility. Such sense of responsibility and self-satisfaction will add immensely to your personal growth with a direct influence on your day-to-day social interactions.

Financial Reprieve and Self-Sufficiency

The cost of foodstuffs has skyrocketed lately placing many homeowners in awkward positions of having to part with a lot of money to pay for groceries. Growing seasonal fruits and vegetables can guarantee you enough food throughout the year. This will tremendously reduce your trips to the grocery store and save you money.

In the end, you will enjoy fruits and vegetable fresh from the garden when you want it, however, you want it. Since most home gardening enthusiasts choose organic methods to grow their plants, the resultant harvest is as healthy as it could go. Such fruits and vegetables will not have dangerous pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. You will live a self-sufficient life and this will greatly improve your personal growth.

Instills Good Virtues in a Family

Everyone dream of raising a cohesive, loving and happy family. Having such a family is definitely part of personal growth. Gardening is one of those hobbies or activities that all family members can participate in regardless of their ages or gender. The patience and attention it takes to tend to a garden make us all nurtures regardless of our age, gender or societal origins. Even those with mental issues always enjoy gardening and this can boost their self-esteem and improve the quality of their lives. If we can nurture a garden then we can develop even better virtues to live in perfect harmony within our homes.

Helps Further Education and Career

Gardening has this special ability to stimulate new interests in people. Even those who have never had anything to do with horticulture, nutrition, landscaping, and marketing can be stimulated to develop an interest in any or all of these fields. For instance, if you want to grow watermelon yet you have no idea as to how to prepare the garden, plant, care for and even harvest the resultant fruits, it will require you to carry out a little research.

In the process, you will likely learn new things that might stimulate your interest to venture further into the zen activity of horticulture. Some garden plants are so beautiful that you can use them to create a picturesque landscape in your home. This may kindle your interest in landscaping. Successful gardening may not only educate your children but influence their performance in school and lead them to consider a wider range of career choices.

Fosters Social Cohesion through Group Gardening

Personal growth does not just revolve around you. It also has a lot to do with how you interact with others in the community. Such interaction will help you develop a healthy relationship with your neighbors, friends, and colleagues. This will have a direct influence on your personal growth. The best way to foster such social cohesion is to get involved with others in group gardening, local landscaping improvements, participation in your HOA’s landscaping decisions, etc.

You can also seize the opportunity in sessions with a gardening group to share your pains, concerns, enjoyment and successes, as well as failures. After the harvest, the group members often share the outcome among themselves, great for bonding with neighbors and the community.

Final Verdict

There you have it. Those are the 7 ways in which gardening impacts your personal growth. If you want to love a long, healthy life with near perfect physical and mental health, the best way to go is to start a garden. The benefit of a home garden is that it does not require a lot in terms of space, effort, and money to execute but it has lots of health and financial benefits. In case you have never tried home gardening before then you will now know what you have been missing.

What You Need To Know About High-Altitude Mountain Survival

Every day, millions of people board airplanes in shorts or short skirts and open-toes sandals without a second thought. This is no wonder as the airline industry uses chance of accident per mile traveled statics of large commercial aircraft to convince them that airplanes are surrounded by magical safety bubbles.

“The risk is so low that there is no sense concerning yourself with it.”, they say.

To effectively assess risk, one must consider the total risk, not just “accidents” per mile traveled of large commercial aircraft. What happens if we add in private planes? How about small planes?

We must also consider the exposure to said risk. While the risk may be low, the exposure is severe. In fact, the total risk is significant enough that planes are required to carry approved survival kits to fly over water, in Alaska and Canada.

Survival kits are required because rescuing survivors from remote areas requires time, planning and the cooperation of the weather. Without survival kits, survivors would not survive until rescue, especially in mountainous terrain. I remember flying over the arctic circle for the first time as a child, looking down at the mountains, tundra and ice bergs on that flight and thinking that it must be a whole lot more comfortable up there in the plane than down on the ground and that if anything went wrong, that is where we would end up.

There are many ways to wind up on high on a mountain. And here’s how to survive if you find yourself in a situation like this. Briefly:

  • Exposure is the leading cause of wilderness survival-related death, so dress based on the coldest nighttime temperature instead of the daytime temperature.
  • Carry critical survival gear in your pockets, not in your pack, which is very likely to be separated from you when you need it most.
  • By the time water boils, it is safe, even on the highest mountains in the world where you could not even survive without bottled oxygen.
  • Altitude sickness can be deadly. If you ascend past 8,000’ descend below 4,000’ as soon as possible at the first sign of a headache and any other additional symptom of altitude sickness unless you have a doctor with you and he or she tell you different.
  • Despite advances in avalanche safety technology, avoidance is still your best and safest option.

Mountain Survival by Ecosystem

Viewed from space, the Earth’s atmosphere is surprisingly thin. At high altitudes, little atmosphere exists to lessen exposure to UV radiation and oxygen concentrations are lower. The greenhouse effect is also lessened, so the higher you go up a mountain, the colder it gets.

There is also more wind at higher altitudes, so as you climb, forest density gradually decreases until trees cannot grow at all. This line on a mountain is known as the tree line.

This is important to survival as survival becomes more difficult without trees and the biodiversity that they support. There are far fewer resources available for survival above the tree line.

Alpine: Tundra and Grasslands

Alpine is the ecosystem of a mountain above the tree line. There are fewer plant species in this zone, with tundra, grasslands or shrublands. Plants are mostly lichens, moss, cushion plants and grasses.

Subalpine: Below the Tree Line

Just below the tree line, continual exposure to icy winds means that trees able to grow here are scattered and growth is stunted, deformed and gnarly. The term used to describe this characteristic tree growth is Krummholz, which means, “twisted, crooked or bent.”

Descending the mountain, decreased wind enables trees to grow straighter, taller an in sparse stands as the forest line is approached. For the survivor, descending to the lower subalpine typically means encountering firewood and some degree of shelter from exposure.

Montane & Submontane: Forests, Meadows and Rivers

The forest line or timberline is where the sparse stands of trees thicken into forest or dense stands. These are the highland forests, typically coniferous or mixed. Survivors able to descend to this point, typically find better shelter from the wind, UV light, abundant firewood and more abundant resources of all kinds.

Mountain Survival Dangers & Difficulties

The historical record is replete with stories of guerillas fleeing into the mountains to survive because mountain life is both dangerous and difficult.

Cold

Cold exposure is the leading cause of death in mountain survival. The higher you go, the colder it gets. Find a mountain high enough and you will encounter snow even if the mountain is on the equator. With a summit of 20.703’, Chimborazo, in Ecuador, has snow year-round, and Mount Kilimanjaro and the Andes have glaciers.

3 Second SEAL Test Will Tell You If You’ll Survive A SHTF Situation

Even in the lower 48, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Nevada, Utah, Washington, New Mexico, Montana, Idaho and Arizona all have mountains over 12,000’. At high altitudes like this, mountains can be extremely cold at any time of year. Mountains can also make their own weather. Where I live in the Rockies, it snowed on the 4th of July one year.

Every year, people die from exposure in the mountains. Most of them travel up from lower altitudes and underestimate the overnight low temperature.

High Winds

High winds produce wind chill, making it feel colder than indicated by the temperature. Wind chaps skin and drives ice crystals and precipitation causing wind burn and chapped lips. It can also drive rain and snow up under shelter and make it difficult to start fires.

Solar Radiation

At high altitude, less atmosphere means more intense UV radiation which causes sun burns much faster than at sea level. Snow also reflects sunlight, causing snow blindness.

Avalanches

Avalanches are snow slides and typically occur on or below slope of 30-45 degrees. Avalanches can be very powerful and can bury survivors before they have time to react. If entombed in enough snow and ice, escape is often impossible without air pockets because the body is immobilized by the weight of ice and snow. Survivors are often disoriented, do not know which way is up and cannot see.

Scarcity of Resources

Alpine and subalpine zones often lack resources encountered at lower altitude, further complicating survival. Without shelter from exposure and fuel to keep a fire going, it becomes even more difficult to keep hypothermia at bay.

Altitude Sickness

Anyone can get altitude sickness regardless of heath of physical conditioning.

Young people are at greater risk. People who live at or near sea level may experience feelings of breathlessness at altitudes as low as 5,000’.

Acute attitude sickness can occur as low as 6,600’ at a pressure of around 0.79 atmosphere (80 kilopascals) in otherwise healthy patients, so take a ski trip in the Rockies and attitude sickness is a possibility.

While most people can ascend to 8,000’ without symptoms, susceptibility varies. Over 8,000’ attitude sickness is a risk.

Onset of symptoms typically occurs six to ten hours after ascent. For most, symptoms improve within two days, but some the condition is more serious.

There are three flavors of altitude sickness with the last two sometimes being life threatening:

  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
  • High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
  • High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

AMS is the most common and mildest form of altitude sickness. Symptoms of AMS are a headache at an altitude above 7,900’ with a pressure below 0.75 atmosphere and one or more the following “hangover-like” symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Weakness, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, insomnia
  • Swelling of hands, feet and face
  • Muscle Aches
  • Persistent rapid pulse
  • Pins & needles sensation
  • General Malaise

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

HAPE is a buildup of fluid in the lungs and is very dangerous and can be life threatening.

  • Bronchitis-like symptoms (coughing up pink, frothy spittle or mucous, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort)
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Blue or Gray Skin
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Bubbly-sounding breathing, gasping or wheezing
  • Excessive sweating, dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness can be signs of drop in blood pressure

High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

HACE is the most dangerous form of altitude sickness and involves buildup of fluid in the brain. HACE is life threatening.

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Insomnia
  • Diminished Appetite
  • Confusion
  • Coma

Mountain Survival Techniques & Tips

Dress for the Coldest Nighttime Temperature

Whether traveling by small private plane or a large commercial aircraft, as soon as it goes down, what you are wearing matters a great deal provided you survive the crash.

Today, people are more insulated than ever from the environment. They transition from one climate controlled shelter to another, be it a home, garage, automobile, airport or aircraft, I see people in shorts and flip flops in 13 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, dashing from a store into an SUV to drive home.

Carry Critical Survival Gear in Your Pockets

Survival/self-recovery gear should be carried in your pockets or otherwise attached to your body as opposed to carrying it in a bag or pack. Bags and packs get removed when we sit down, ride in transportation, and when we eat, rest or sleep.

If you fall in water, you need to doff your backpack to swim. In an avalanche, you also need to lose your pack in a hurry. Packs and bags often become separated from us when we need them the most, so survival gear goes in your pockets, on your belt or otherwise strapped to your body.

Because the upper zones of mountains can be devoid of resources, survivors stand a much better chance of surviving if they have basic equipment on their person. The ability to start a fire in a cold, wet, windy environment and protect it from precipitation is a literal lifesaver in a mountain survival scenario.

The survival/self-recovery gear I carry every day of my life includes a small tube of white petrolatum, which is very helpful in mountain survival. Applied to the skin, it prevents and treats wind burn and chapping, can be used to start fires and has a surprising number of survival uses.

Study Wild Edibles

Cladonia rangiferina or reindeer lichen (sometimes misnamed reindeer moss) is a common and easily identified edible medicinal plant that grows in alpine tundra. Your body needs energy to produce heat in the cold.

Knowing what wild edibles may be available in each ecosystem, what is edible in each season and how to prepare them is helpful in a long-term survival scenario. Otherwise, travel with a soccer team so you will have plenty of teammates to eat should you end up stranded for weeks or months.

Boiling Water at High Altitude

Every kid learns in elementary physics that water boils at increasingly lower temperatures as altitude increases because air pressure decreases.

Unfortunately, they do not learn that the temperatures at which pathogens are deactivated are so far below the boiling point of water at sea level that water is microbiologically safe by the time it boils even on the highest mountain on the planet.

Unless you are a high-altitude balloonist in an unpressurized cabin, you do not need to worry about this. Boiling water beyond the point the point it reaches a rolling boil just wastes precious fuel that could be used to keep you alive longer.

If you are interested in saving fuel, get a Water Pasteurization Indicator (WAPI). It is a plexiglass tube with a wax pellet inside that melts when the water has been heated sufficiently and is microbiologically safe to drink. Since this is long before the water boils, WAPIs save fuel.

Acclimate to Altitude

The faster you ascend to altitude and the higher you climb, the more likely you get altitude sickness. In a survival situation, you may not have diagnostic equipment. If you develop a headache and at least one other symptom within a day or two of ascent, you may have altitude sickness.

If your symptoms are severe, you will need medical attention. You need to get below 4,000’ as soon as possible, without endangering yourself further or anyone else and get to a doctor. Stay alert to symptoms, and descend before altitude sickness becomes serious.

Acclimatizing your body reduces the chance of altitude sickness.

  • Start your ascent below 10,000’. If you fly or drive, stop here and spend at least 24 hours while your body gets used to the altitude.
  • Ascend a maximum of 1,000’ per day on foot.
  • For every 3,000’ you ascend, spend 24-hours at rest at that altitude.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink 3-4 quarts of water per day and make sure that at least 70% of your calorie intake is from carbohydrates.
  • Do not use tobacco, drink alcohol or take sleeping pills.
  • Descend to a lower elevation at the first sign of symptoms.

Avalanche Avoidance & Safety

Traveling ridges is safer than traversing slopes, but avoid cornices and other overhangs while doing so. Avoid slopes of 30-45 degrees and stay out of the track, which is the path the avalanche will take.

When I was a kid, it seems like avalanche technology was a St Bernard and a stick. Avalanche tech has come a long way since those days. We do still use dogs and sticks, but now they are supplemented by backpacks with big airbags that can deploy, enveloping a survivor in an instant, creating airspace necessary to survive trapped in a wall of snow. They can also trigger a locator beacon.

Despite advances in technology, avoidance is still your best and safest option. Avalanches can occur so quickly that you may not even have time to react. If you are caught in an avalanche and do have time to react:

  • Jump up slope past or toward the fracture line. Inches are often the difference between life and death.
  • Doff your pack and heavy gear. A nice feature on military packs is quick release straps for rapid doffing. Critical survival gear should be carried in the pockets of your clothing and should not be affected by doffing your pack.
  • Get out of the way. Make a run for the edge of the track. Even if you do not make it out of the track, the snow may be shallower along the edge.
  • “Swim” for all you are worth toward the edge of the avalanche.
  • Protect your head with your elbows to create and air pocket.

You never know what a trip that is supposed to be easy might bring, and how would you be forced to make use of your survival skills. What can you do to stay alive? Practice the skills, know your limits and learn the latest tricks for your survival!

Holiday Safety When You’re Inside, Outside and Away from Home

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, or so the song goes. Chances are you’ve already got your holiday presents, and your family’s already excited to open them. Maybe you’re meeting and catching up with relatives you’ve missed for so long, and it’s somehow easier than usual to break out a smile for people passing by. But even at this time, it pays to keep your guard up. Holiday incidents can happen to anyone, and the season of giving can also be the season for taking.

Make no mistake: people can be naughty or nice. And as many law enforcement officials can tell you, the not-nice people of the world don’t take vacations from their habits. They can look for the gifts under your tree, the car in your driveway, and anything else you have that they might want. From that point, they can start thinking about how to make it all theirs. Unless you take the right home safety steps, you could be letting those Grinches win.

Keep Safe from Strangers

Some people will go too far and stoop too low to get what they want. Recently in Philadelphia, an older woman let a pair of men into her house, thinking that they were utility workers, only to be robbed. One elderly man in San Francisco was brutally attacked in his residence. And a family in Georgia was recently tied up and robbed at home by a group of armed men dressed as policemen.

Keeping your home safe is essential especially when it’s occupied, so it’s best to keep a few basic measures in mind. First is to always keep entryways into your residence secured — with multiple locks, if possible. If you have Christmas decorations in the front yard, make sure they’re plugged into an outlet at your porch or garage rather than one inside the house; leaving doors even a tiny bit ajar for wires to run through can be disastrous.

And unless you’re expecting them, don’t just let strangers into your house. Ask why they’re there, and if you can, find a way to verify their story or identity. As for people claiming to be law enforcement officials, you can open the door and answer questions they may have, but you don’t have to let them in. Remember, policemen can enter your home only if you let them or they have a warrant.

Of course, some members of your family may be too trusting and likely to let strangers in. If you have a home security system, such as a DSC alarm system, you may want to give them a panic button to wear around their wrist or neck. That way, they still have a chance to sound the alarm when they’re in trouble.

Don’t Show Them What You Got

If you have friends or family from far away, you may not have all your presents underneath the tree; some may arrive at your doorstep. It isn’t that surprising, since online shopping is definitely a hot trend for the busy. But if you’re going to be away from home, you might want to consider additional security measures. Here in the US, in Canada, and even as far as the UK, a new type of crime is on the rise: package theft.

If you’re expecting a package and no one in your family can receive it, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out and, if possible, keep it until you get back. Outdoor cameras can also be useful to ensure home safety when you’re away from home; just make sure they’re working and functional, especially if there’s a risk of them being compromised due to extreme weather conditions. In the same way, outdoor sirens and strobe lights can deter would-be porch invaders.

Also, stay vigilant even after you’ve opened your presents. People who receive high-end electronic systems like TVs or gaming systems often make the mistake of just dumping the boxes outside — where criminals can see what they can score. To be safe, always rip boxes up before throwing them away.

Stay Sharp on Holiday Trips

Not all of us are home for the holidays: maybe you have some business to take care of or need to visit old friends. Or maybe the grand family reunion isn’t going to be held at your house this year. Whatever the case may be, holiday travel can be risky especially if you’re visiting an unfamiliar place.

Airport and mall parking lots are a perfect example. People tend to concentrate less when they’re lugging around luggage or big shopping bags — prime pickings for petty thieves. As a traveler, you shouldn’t be distracted: have your key ready, don’t take calls or send messages in public places, and be aware of your surroundings.

If you’re staying at a hotel, note the emergency numbers and keep your room key with you at all times. For additional holiday vacation safety, talk to people about any areas you’re going to visit. Travelers renting cars will especially want to learn about the risk of vehicle break-ins. If you can’t avoid parking in a high-risk spot, don’t leave valuables in the car, or at least make sure they can’t be seen from outside. And put your valuable away BEFORE you get to the parking structure as you will most likely be observed doing it once you park. Also, since wireless signals from car key fobs can be cloned, it may be safer to lock the doors manually.

Leave Your Property Protected

Take note: the holidays are also the season for home break-ins. Far too often, people traveling out of state to visit relatives leave their property exposed. In fact, the incidence of burglaries tends to rise during the Christmas season.

To make sure you’re leaving the house safe while on a holiday, keep your valuables hidden; draw the shades and the curtains so the inside of your house can’t be seen. If you have a security system, keep the cameras on and the sensors armed. Assuming your system also has smart-home capabilities, you can also set timers on lights, the television, and other electronics to make people think the house is still occupied; don’t spoil that illusion by posting pictures on social media. Again, a trusted neighbor can help by picking up any mail you get. The Post Office also holds mail when asked.

And if you’re a gun owner, make sure your guns are stored away safely. There’s an increasing incidence of people breaking into gun stores and stealing weapons, which they later use to commit more crimes. Make your community and family a little safer by keeping your weapons out of the wrong hands.

Threats and problems will come, no matter the season. And the more you can prepare and guard yourself against the worst, the happier and more content you’ll be in the long run. Sure, taking all these precautions might cost you a little more effort, a little more energy, and a little more time, and it all adds to the stress of everyday life. But if it means making sure that the holidays are filled with comfort and joy, there’s no question that it’s all worth it.

10 Essentials For Your Pet’s Survival Kit

Many people trapped in place, as well as those evacuated from the recent hurricanes found that they were unable to care for their pets. In case of emergency, millions of pets are injured, abandoned, or lose their lives because their owners haven’t made a plan for their survival.

While human life is always important, you can still increase the odds of your pets surviving and thriving in both short and long term disaster scenarios.

Here are 10 essentials you should have assembled into a bug out bag or kit so that you and your pet will always be ready for any situation.

Food and Water

Unless your pet is on a very special diet, you should try to put together some extra food and water. For example, if you have a smaller animal that doesn’t eat much, it may not take much work to store away a few extra cans of food, or a small bag of dry food.

If you have a much larger animal that eats several pounds of food in just a few days, then you need extra planning. Since there are no nutrition dense MREs for animals, you will need to figure out a way to do what you can with a relatively limited food supply.

Here are some things you can do to feed your pet more easily during a major crisis.

Rely on Food Scraps

Introduce as many table scraps and other human foods as you can into your pet’s diet, but make sure that you don’t feed the animal foods that are poisonous to them.

There are several good lists online that will tell you what foods to avoid feeding animals based on their species. Contrary to popular belief, the biggest problem with feeding your pet human based foods is that their digestion gets accustomed to a specific kind of food.

When you make sudden changes, your pet may experience diarrhea or other problems that will pass once they adjust to the new food. The wider the selection of foods you feed your pet now, the better chance they will have of remaining healthy and strong when their own food is unavailable.

Once you are confident that your pet is accustomed to consuming human foods, you can pack similar foods for you and other humans that will be travelling with you.

Take into Account Caught Food

As with any other kind of food, the more chance your pet has to adapt to the different food types, the less risk they will have of developing digestive problems.

Giving your pet some human foods or hunted ones, and then stop and go back to feeding just commercial foods won’t be simple. As with your own body, conditioning for consuming different foods must be maintained by continually eating as much variety as possible.

Test if MREs work for Your Pet

If you are focusing mainly on MREs or other nutrient dense foods, make sure they are safe for your pet first. Remember that even humans can experience severe intestinal and other digestive problems because of the reduction in water content in these foods.

You may need to mix these foods with more water before feeding them to your pet, or find some other way to ensure they do not cause a serious medical problem.

Blankets and Bedding

Aside from providing a sense of security, blankets and bedding will be important for keeping your pet healthy. Whether it’s cold, or your pet gets wet, blankets and bedding can be a lifesaver.

Get your pet used to emergency blankets and other variants that you may have packed for your own use, since it would be easier to share these items with your pet if they are already accustomed to them.

Restraining Devices

Unless you are planning to bug out with a fish or some other animal that cannot live in open air, then you’ll need some kind of restraining device to keep your pet safe and under control at all times.

Even if your cat, rabbit, rat, ferret, chinchilla, or other mammalian pet usually travels in a carrier, you should also have a leash and harness available.

Cats can easily slip out of a collar, and given that most dislike leashes, you’ll need the harness for times when your cat needs to be out of the carrier.

If you have a dog, you may believe a collar and leash or a harness are enough of a restraining device.

But if you must stay in a shelter, or a rescuer will have to help you evacuate, a dog on a leash can be much harder to handle than one sitting in a carrier.

Your pet will be very stressed out by the situation, and if they are not used to so many strangers on top of everything else, it can spell disaster for you and anyone the dog encounters. It is best to have a carrier available so that the dog has a safe sanctuary and can also be handled with ease.

If your dog is too big, you should have a blanket or something else on hand that is large enough to wrap the dog up in. In an emergency situation where the dog is going to be in tight quarters, it will give you much better control than trying to work exclusively with a harness or collar.

Also, many dogs (and cats) calm down almost immediately when wrapped up in a blanket, which will also make transporting the dog in strange or close quarters a bit easier.

If you are trying to transport birds, make sure their flight feathers are properly clipped. As with cats, even though you may intend to transport birds in their cages, it is still very important to have a leash and harness. Be sure that your pet is comfortable with these devices so that they can have some time out of the cage.

Ownership and Vaccination Records

With so many fires, hurricanes, and other natural disasters, you may wind up travelling across state lines in an effort to find safety. Also, if pets are going to be accepted in a nearby shelter, you’ll need to provide documents showing that your pet is vaccinated for rabies. that’s why you have to keep ownership and vaccination records in your pet’s survival kit.

While reviewing your pet’s vaccination records, ask about vaccination requirements to go across state lines, as well as for other states where your pet may travel. Make sure that you know all of the vaccination requirements for each state where you may go, as well as ones where you may be travelling through.

Many people don’t realize that laws surrounding specific pet breeds are getting as bad as gun type and accessory limits. You may own a pitbull that is legal in your state, but that doesn’t mean you can legally bring it into a city or state where they are outlawed.

Unless you have a letter from your doctor that the animal is medically necessary, it might not travel with your pet in time of need. Taking care of this problem is pretty simple.

If your pet gives you comfort and helps you manage stress, get a letter from your doctor stating that the pet is to be with you, including in public places, to ensure your pet can get into any shelter and travel across state lines. Since any animal deemed medically necessary is protected by federal law, states and cities cannot violate your rights just because of the animal’s breed or species.

Medical and Other Information Guides

Since veterinarians will also be concerned about trying to evacuate and taking care of their own families, you might not find a medical specialist to take care of your pet in case of disaster, so keep information available on how to treat ailments and injuries for your pets.

Learn how to recognize the signs of poisoning from common toxins, and whether you need to induce vomiting, or use some other means to ensure your pet survives the poisoning.

Learn basic anatomy and organ locations, bones and joints, and how best to immobilize them in the event of an injury. Learn how to treat wounds and stop bleeding, and how to use basic medical tools such as thermometers or other devices to better diagnose a problem.

You need to know what to do if your pet gets bitten by a snake, a poisonous insect, or something else that usually requires assistance from a veterinarian. Also, learn how to remove ticks, fleas, and other insects that can spread disease and cause other problems, and also how to clean ears, eyes, and other areas where dirt or insects can cause pain, injury, or loss of function.

Listings of Shelters, Rescues, and Other Sanctuaries

Preppers store away supplies and develop survival plans so that they wouldn’t rely on FEMA camps or similar arrangements. Even so, you might need to take refuge in some kind of shelter and many of these facilities won’t allow pets along even if you have enough food and adequate restraining devices.

Find out about shelters in your local area, and around that are willing to accommodate pets. If you have a federally registered service animal, you might bring that animal into any place of refuge as long as you have the letter from your doctor.

Tranquilizers

Does your dog bark at the sight of strangers around the house? Is your cat a whirl of claws and teeth any time you go near a veterinarian? You might accept these signs of distress, but they can be a problem when you and your pet must be in a strange place for days, weeks, or even months.

In a sense, pets are very much like young children. You can’t explain to them that they must remain calm or limit their aggressivity. Some difficult situations might appear when it may be best to simply give your pet a tranquilizer.

First, you can ask your vet for suitable medication, but there are also many over the counter herbal aides that have a sedative effect on animals. Pick one that is safe for your pet species and test it out before crisis, to make sure your pet is not allergic to it.

Finally, there products dedicated to calming animals without the use of drugs and herbs. Thundershirts and other products can keep your pet calm and also reduce the symptoms of stress. Try these products out before a crisis to see if they really have a calming effect on your pet.

Safe Herbs or Medications

Herbs can be used to treat a range of problems from a cold to managing wounds, pain, and other ailments. Make sure that you choose only herbs and medications that are safe for your pet.

Ask your veterinarian for a list of safe remedies as well as do some additional research online. In addition, your local pet store may also carry a number of products that may be of use.

Toys, Treats, and Comfort Items

As an adult, you may wear a religious item or carry something else that helps you feel calm even though it has no specific tangible purpose. Your pets will also derive a sense of calm from objects that have meaning – favorite toy, treats, or other items your pet associates with comfort and safety.

Don’t overlook your pet’s normal food and water dishes. If you are keeping a list of items to grab quickly in an evacuation, these two objects should be at the top of your list.

Euthanasia Tools or Drugs

Regardless of your pet’s age and current health condition, there’s always an increased risk of injury or disease during crisis. You focus on keeping your pet alive, but sometimes the animal might suffer with no possibility of recovery, and putting the pet out of its misery might be the best thing to do.

Even seasoned hunters are surprised to discover that there is a big emotional difference between taking the life of a game animal and killing a pet. Veterinarians will also tell you that euthanizing an animal is not always a smooth and easy process. That’s why you need both the means, tools, and skills necessary to do the job.

  • Many animals die from accidental poisoning, but don’t try to poison an animal as a means of euthanasia.
  • Most mammals will die fairly quickly if you insert a knife blade between the base of the skull and the first vertebrae. When combined with a tranquilizer or something that will cause your pet to lose consciousness, you reduce the amount of struggle and pain.
  • If you have a gun, then you can also shoot the animal. Here again, you might also want to use a tranquilizer so that there is less sign of physical pain.
  • Unless you are highly skilled at killing animals with clubs or other blunt instruments, don’t rely on them to euthanize your pet in time of need. Electricity, heart sticking, and gas are also cruel and inhumane no matter how you look at it.

Millions of animals are sitting in rescues and sanctuaries because their owners left them behind during hurricanes and other natural disasters. These owners didn’t think ahead, let alone prepare a survival kit for their pet.

It may take a little bit of work and planning to prepare for bringing a pet along during an evacuation, but saving your furry friend is well worth the effort!

Net Neutrality And The Law of Unintended Consequences

I sometimes wonder if Congress is capable of doing anything good in today’s modern society. As best as I can tell, the legislative branch of the government, which the framers of the Constitution specified as being the only branch of the government to create new laws, has lost much of its original function.

Between the courts creating law from the bench and the (former) president using Executive Orders, it seems that Congress is passing less and less laws, with less and less impact, these days.

Now it seems that they are more about spending money and increasing the size of government, than they are about actually creating new laws. Much of that ends up doing little more than causing problems, especially giving the various agencies in the Executive Branch an opportunity to create new regulations to control our lives and hamper businesses.

Part of the platform that President Trump ran under was the promise to reduce government regulations. One of his earliest actions upon assuming the presidency was to issue an executive order stating that for every new regulation any government agency promulgates, they must get rid of two old ones.

Trump is a businessman above all so, much of what he is doing is being done from that viewpoint. His war on regulations is a prime example of this. All regulations cost individuals and businesses money, so by reducing regulations, he is trying to reduce the cost to businesses, thereby creating a better business environment.

Government regulation has become the bane of businesses, especially small businesses. Large corporations can afford staffs of lawyers to read all those regulations and determine what actions the corporation must take to follow them.

But the small business owner can’t afford that. They have to depend on their own ability to understand the miles of red tape the government produces, a task at which they are usually woefully inadequate.

Yet the largest part of our economic growth, especially the creation of new jobs, comes from those small businesses. So by creating mountains of regulations, government agencies are stifling the very businesses which we need the most; those that are growing the economy.

Yes, there are places where we need the government to create laws and regulations, but the idea of the government putting their sticky fingers in every aspect of life and business is counterproductive. At a minimum, they hurt the economy, and at the worst, they destroy people’s lives.

Here’s Why We Can Never Win This War!

Trying to protect one thing, like the environment, with more regulations, usually hurts some other part of society. Often an area that the creators of the regulations never even thought about (usually because that area is not part of their purview).

Herein lies one of the biggest problems of big government. In an attempt to protect society, government agencies actually stifle the very society they are supposedly trying to protect. They do it by not taking everything into consideration, when they create the new regulations.

I have to say, while a lot of the blame belongs to government agencies creating regulations, a fair amount of it belongs to Congress as well. Bills are getting longer and longer, becoming more and more complicated all the time.

Remember Nancy Pelosi’s comment that the House of Representatives would have to pass the Obamacare bill, so that they could see what was in it? The bill was literally too long and complicated for the members of Congress to read and understand. And look where that’s gotten us.

Like much of what comes out of Washington these days, Obamacare is a perfect example of the Law of Unintended Consequences. There have been countless problems with the rollout of Obamacare and countless people hurt by it. Have people been helped? Yes, especially those who had pre-existing medical conditions and those who were newly eligible for Medicaid. But it probably hurt as many people as it helped, if not more.

Did the creators of Obamacare know that it was going to hurt millions of people? We’ll never truly know. The cynical side of me says that they knew and didn’t care, purposely lying so that they could take that step towards socialized medicine. But my cynicism isn’t proof of anything and shouldn’t be taken as if it is.

Each and every law; each and every regulation, has unintended consequences. That alone seems to be adequate reason to avoid passing new laws and regulations, especially the massive ones that Washington is becoming infamous for. Maybe short, simple laws can be passed without a lot of that happening, but the monstrosities that we’re seeing today clearly can’t.

Enter Net Neutrality Bill

Of course, every major law being presented in Congress is becoming a media circus today, rather than a serious action on behalf of our government. Bills are being given deceptive names and descriptions, in order to gain public favor and push our elected representatives into passing laws that don’t do what their public image promises they will do.

The media, too lazy to really read the proposed bills and regulations, grabs hold of those printed sound bites and runs with them, creating a false narrative that is more propaganda than anything else.

Net Neutrality was one of those. Two years ago, during Obama’s second term in office, Net Neutrality was pushed through, not as a bill in Congress, but as a regulation promulgated by the FCC. To do so, the FCC had to take the stand that internet access was a public utility, giving them the right to regulate it.

But why was this even considered? Was the internet broken? Was there something seriously wrong, which Net Neutrality sought to correct? Or was this just one more example of the government meddling in things they didn’t need to meddle in?

The core of Net Neutrality was the idea that all information crossing the internet should be given the same priority and be sent along at the same speed.

Video first seen on TheBlaze.

Big companies shouldn’t be given any preference over small companies. At least, that’s the way it was sold to the American people. The whole propaganda campaign associated with Net Neutrality was to protect the little guys on the internet from the big guys.

But here’s the kicker; many of the biggest internet companies actually supported Net Neutrality. How does that fit in with reigning them in? You can be sure that those big companies didn’t support the idea out of altruism. There must have been some benefit to them, or they would have been speaking out against it.

There was an advantage. Net Neutrality only dealt with ISPs, Internet Service Providers. The big internet Corporations are their own ISPs, so they can readily avoid anything having to do with Net Neutrality.

But the little guys are controlled by it. So, the advantage actually goes to the very same companies which are supposed to be reined in by Net Neutrality.

This past week the FCC undid Net Neutrality, taking it back off the books and making things like they were before. I’d have to say, in today’s political climate, that was an incredible act of moral courage.

All too many times, bad laws and bad regulations stay in place, just because everyone is afraid to eliminate them and catch the political backlash for doing so.

What This Really Needed?

Of course, those on the political left have been going bananas over this, with each one trying to outdo the other in their declarations about the internet apocalypse that is about to occur. Internet apocalypse? It seems to me that the internet was working just fine before Net Neutrality existed.

But it’s easy to sell a narrative like that, when the people who are consuming the propaganda are ignorant to the issue. And if there is anywhere where the average person has plenty of chance to be ignorant, it’s the internet. The colossus we refer to as the internet is too complicated for most people to understand. It takes years of study and training to even get to the beginning of truly understanding it.

My son is a high-level network engineer, working for an ISP. Even though I used to be an engineering manager, when he talks about his work, the bandwidth is so high, that I’m barely catching the bottom edge of it. The things he needs to know, in order to do his job, are so technical that there’s no way for me to follow.

Yet we have lawmakers and pundits trying to act as if they are experts on this highly technical field. They’re not. In many cases, all they are doing is spouting off their party’s talking points, while mixing in a little fear mongering for flavor.

Let me give you just one simple example of how Net Neutrality hurts everyone; the telephone. Today, most long-distance phone calls travel over the internet. Unlike movies, which are able to stream faster than they are viewed, spooling on the user’s computer to avoid interruption, phone calls can’t do that. They aren’t pre-recorded, they’re live. So they can’t spool. They have to go out in real time. What that means is that if telephone calls aren’t given priority on internet lines, there will be pauses in the call, caused by other traffic butting in.

Here’s another one for you. One of the major corporations who have supported Net Neutrality is Netflix. It just so happens that they are one of the biggest consumers of internet bandwidth, as high-definition video takes an enormous amount of bandwidth to transmit. What this means is that your search for anything on the internet is slowed down, at least to some extent, by Netflix streaming video to your friends, neighbors and others you don’t know.

Should Netflix have the same priority as someone who is trying to make a few bucks with their blog? Should they have a higher priority? Well, since they are such a big customer, they don’t have to work through an ISP. That means that Net Neutrality gave them an advantage over the small guy, trying to run his blog. Is that fair?

Eliminating Net Neutrality is going to have unintended consequences; I guarantee it. I’m sure that we’ll be hearing stories of it, compliments of the mainstream media. They were against the elimination of Net Neutrality from the outset, just because that’s the liberal point of view. So you can be sure that they’re already chomping at the bit to tell us all what a disaster its elimination has been, even if they have to stretch the truth to do so.
