Back to Basics: Are You Prepared to Defend Your Family?

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

In the continuation of my Back to Basics series that has stretched out a little longer than anticipated, I want to address another of the most common subjects preppers ask about when they are just getting started prepping and that is around defending yourself or others. What are the things we as preppers should consider […]

Prep Blog Review: How’s Your Food Stockpile?

prep blog reviewNo matter how well prepared you think you are, just one small oversight that could compromise your food stockpile will render all your prepping useless.

So let’s take a look at these 5 articles and see what we can do to make our prepping even better and keep our food supply safe.

1. The 5 Seeds That You Need to Stockpile in Your Pantry

seeds“The world is already struggling with food supply and managing crops. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted a general warming of the world climate over the next several decades. Growing our own food gives us control over our lives and independence.

The best seeds for you to store are those that are most suitable for the particular environment you find yourself in. And of course environments vary widely across the USA, from wet and warm, to cold and very dry. You should do some research for your particular area and work out what fits with your local weather systems. One of the best ways to do this is to observe what grows best around you and use that.”

2. Venezuela Is Out of Food: Here’s What an Economic Collapse Really Looks Like

venezuela food“Venezuela is out of food.

After several years of long lines, rationing, and shortages, the socialist country does not have enough food to feed its population, and the opposition government has declared a “nutritional emergency.” This is just the most recent nail in the beleaguered country’s slow, painful economic collapse.

Many people expect an economic collapse to be shocking, instant, and dramatic, but really, it’s far more gradual than that. It looks like empty shelves, long lines, desperate government officials trying to cover their tushes, and hungry people. For the past two years, I’ve been following the situation in Venezuela as each shocking event has unfolded. Americans who feel that our country would be better served by a socialist government would be wise to take note of this timeline of the collapse.”

3. 5 Homestead Probiotics You Can Make at Home!

souer kraut“Making Your Own Low Cost Probiotics

Well the science is in folks, and has been for some time! Probiotics are essential to maintaining a healthy gut, and a strong immune system. A properly functioning digestive system is the key to good health. You can grow, purchase, and eat all of the organic, mineral dense, beyond awesome food you want, but if you are not digesting and absorbing those nutrients then it is all for naught.

The same can be said for all of the fancy vitamin supplements, and even many of the probiotic supplements that are out there. There’s an old saying that goes something like: “garbage in, garbage out.” Anyway, there’s good news. You can grow your own probiotic nutritional supplements right in your homestead kitchen, or barn, or hallway closet… The point is you can be in control of your health and not have to depend on high dollar supplements grown in some lab someplace hundreds of miles away!”

4. Getting the Most from Food and Water During a Disaster

food supply“I recently read an article about what a woman learned from a weekend of surviving on stored water. Basically she learned to have her kids share their bath water and to store more so she could take longer showers and more baths.

In a disaster we all know water is going to be very precious. Water is also one of the hardest things to store. Now is the time to think about ways to get the most out of every drop. I want to stay clean but if it comes down to it and in a disaster we all know it will I’d rather have more for drinking and less for washing.”

5. Your Food Storage is USELESS Without THIS 1 Thing

food stockpile“I hate to break it to you, but it’s very likely that you’ve rendered your food storage completely useless by ignoring this one, critical consideration. So take a deep breath…be ready to learn… and then repent. *grin*

Flint Michigan Water Crisis If you know nothing else about me, know this: I believe wholeheartedly in approaching preparedness with an “everyday focus”.  I believe firmly that if you prepare for the everyday types of scenarios, then you’ll be prepared for the more extreme crises scenarios that may come up as well.“

What did you do to prep this week?

It’s been a long aggravating week, but now all is well and I’m moving on with my life with better things to come. Sometimes things happen that may seem bad at first, but then when you look at it and actually put it all into proper perspective, you realize that it was really a blessing.

Better prospects are already in the works – funny how things always work out better for me in the end. It’s like I can lose a dime and ten steps later find a silver round. Praise the Lord for always looking out for me.

Before we get started with today’s post I’d like to...

How To Build Your DIY Basic Bushcraft Kit

Bushcraft

Bushcraft was almost a lost art before the growing popularity of survival prepping also coincidentally stimulated a new interest in it.

Preppers began to get ready by stockpiling and planning, but they soon realized that no matter how well prepared you might be, in a long term apocalyptic scenario, sooner or later you’ll run out of supplies and resources unless if you are not already completely self-reliant. You might have to live off the land, as the expression goes, like our ancestors and the pioneers often did.

So now there are even schools giving hands on wilderness classes in the ”Art of  bushcraft”. And some people have even chosen it as a permanent alternate lifestyle representing their personal satisfaction in the freedom of self-reliance and simple efficiency. This is also a kind of value producing protest to the out of control modern world so replete with wasteful consumerism and mind controlling technology.

This is a good thing because there is no substitute for individual skill sets and knowledge when it comes to basic survival, which helps with understanding some important differences between standard survival prepping and serious  bushcraft. The obvious one would be that the current status quo of modern survival prepping relies greatly on advanced equipment and purchased stocked resources, and less on physical skills and knowledge of natural resources and your environment.

Bushcraft relies more on special skills and knowledge, and much less on equipment and technology. Even the personal carry pack or kit is a lot less than a typical mission oriented high-speed low drag modern BOB (Bug Out Bag) set up. But good  bushcraft knowledge can often prove that less is really more.

Getting Started for the Least Expense

If you’re interested in learning the fascinating skills of bushcraft, you’ll need a basic  bushcraft kit that goes wherever you go, especially ‘in the bush’ or wilderness. Back in the day these were known as ”every day kits”, ”ditty bags”, and other such nick names, and were carried by most people who traveled around a lot, and contained the basic personal essentials for survival, especially throughout the rural countryside.

You’ve seen the classic pictures of people back in the Great Depression days carrying a stick with a bandana filled with their stuff tied on the end of it associated with homeless drifters sometimes called ”hobos”? In fact, most of this was just a normal lifestyle until a person could get a job and become established somewhere.

Homelessness back then wasn’t associated with a mental illness or problematic social behavior as it is today. There were not many jobs out there for uneducated people other than factory or farm work. And the government didn’t yet establish the alternative social lifestyle of hand out State welfare for people who – for one reason or another – didn’t work for a living. So those without steady work or their own property or place to live survived by moving around from place to place seeking opportunity.

They usually traveled light because often they’d have to move fast or hop a train or just walk long distances and couldn’t carry much. Not to mention they didn’t have much in the first place. Most ”seekers” traveled according to the seasons and hospitable climate areas of the country. If they were knowledgeable and could live completely off the land for a while in between odd jobs at farms or towns, they really didn’t need a whole hell of a lot of exotic personal equipment. Today this is usually referred to as minimalist prepping. So a modern  bushcraft kit does not have to be expensive to be effective.

The first thing to understand clearly for tool choices is the ”pyramid of priority” when you are suddenly alone somewhere, especially the rural/wilderness, with nothing but yourself and what you have in your pockets or are carrying. And you will have no choice but to camp out for the night. Your tools in this case, would necessarily be tailored to the bare essentials you’d need to facilitate the following:

  1. Shelter/security
  2. Fire Starting ability
  3. Water
  4. Food

The Bushcraft Bag

Theoretically advanced  bushcraft experts can do just about anything they need with a knife and a fire starter/striker and little else they couldn’t just carry in their pockets. Pragmatic application notwithstanding, I hope that the pockets were attached to at least a snowmobile suit if they suddenly found themselves bushcrafting in a freezing nighttime weather situation and couldn’t maintain a strong all night fire for themselves.

And yes, I have seen people who can carry everything they need in their Cargo pants, on their belts, and/or in a jacket/vest with multiple pockets, to include a mylar pup tent, enough packed food for a couple of days, and even an animal trap for extended stays in the bush.

This is cool but the only problem with it is that your clothes themselves become the bushcraft kit bag and as such become ‘cumbersome’ and bulky. You can’t walk around everywhere these days in the same clothes only if you occasionally were practicing your craft, so you’d have to carry the clothes themselves around anyway.

While this is suitable for a dedicated outing, using the same set of clothes continuously is not an option most people will be agreeing with. Instead, it will be the tried and true shoulder bag or belt carry kit, which is what you usually see all the original mountain men and Native American Indians carrying. Obviously, this was also the prototype for the modern women’s purse. Because women, after all, always were the most expert of survivalists and preppers!

Leather bags were the traditional choice but a good leather bag is not cheap. However, there are many other inexpensive alternatives that will work just as well and can sometimes be obtained for next to nothing.

IMHO Military Surplus is the way to go especially if you’re on a budget. A lot of time and research originally went into the functional utility design of milsurp equipment and there’s always something somewhere that fits the needs of the survivalist.

At the local Fleet Farm store I picked up these two European Army bags, one a smaller Canvass compact backpack style ($4.95) and the other a waterproof shoulder square style of ideal size and portability for my own personal requirements and kit preferences.($2.95). And third is actually a nice heavy duty pigskin AK-47 four magazine pouch ($9.95) for shoulder or belt carry, which makes a very decent minimalist and comfortable to carry bushcraft kit bag.

kit02392

Bushcraft kits are modified or added to for particular use needs, preferences, range of operation, and other relative circumstances outside of their basic functional necessities.

While I like the compact backpack I chose the square waterproof shoulder bag because my axe fit perfectly in it, and it was just the right size to also fit everything in the picture below and even enough extra emergency food packs to last a day or two before you filled your game traps.

kit02398

Let There Be Fire!

The ability to make a fire ranks as the most important single mechanical skill that bushcrafters must master above all else. Even if you are never in a below freezing climate, you still need a fire to cook raw food and to repel large predators. And where chances of below freezing weather occurs, knowing how to effectively and constantly start a fire anywhere becomes a matter of life or freezing to death.

The art of fire making goes back through history and is not as simple as it seems. Yes, many don’t believe that because they’ve been striking matches every day to light their cigarettes and candles and whatever and never had any problems. But that’s not the same as being stuck off the road in a freezing rain storm with 30 mph winds gusting deep in the woods where everything has been soaked for hours.

There are deliberately specific methodologies and reality that you must learn AND practice if you want to guarantee a fire start every time and a comfortable continuous campfire for heat and cooking. But first you should have some basic fire starting tools in your kit to facilitate starting the fire while you learn and master the ”art of the fire”.

This is also a subjective preference choice as there are quite a few styles of fire starting tools besides the old standby of waterproof matches in a small watertight container. These are the cheapest method and usually work well unless you largely happen to be trying to start your fire in 30mph winds and freezing rain. Then you might prefer one of those blast matches in combination with some Wetfire tinder primer.

You also should consider redundancy in case you lose or break your fire starters. As seen in the kit picture below, I prefer a combination of the typical magnesium scraping block for tinder primer with the flint in the top, a couple of BIC lighters, and the old style small waterproof lighter fluid and flint match container. All together less than 10 bucks if you shop around.

If you want to be a traditionalist, you can even find original replicas of the kits the soldiers carried during the Civil War, including original flint stones and strikers in small metal tins that fit in a pocket. It takes a lot of practice to be able to light a fire in the wilderness with 100% success. But with these fire starting tools you can practice almost anywhere it’s safe to do so.

A Cut Above

You really can’t have a good bushcraft kit without having an edge over your environment. That means having a good field knife, AKA hunting knives or sheath blades, which are non-folding knives with blades of around four to eight inches, and is absolutely necessary for all around  bushcraft utility.

However, there are so many choices, task variations, and price and quality variables that it’s a moot effort to even attempt a best choice suitable to everyone. But because the main qualification for bushcraft must be durability and strength, the choices narrow somewhat.

The primary qualifications would be a relatively thick blade with a full tang through the end of the handle, not one where the blade is merely connected to the handle somehow. Some of these non-full tang knives are reasonably priced and look good but these usually break on the first time out during hard usage. You also need a good whetstone for fine sharpening and a round chainsaw file for quick touch up or heavier duty on your hatchet.

Since we’re on a budget, Milsurp or used flea market or Amazon knives are the cheapest and work very well. There are also a number of these commercial camping/hunting models even at Walmart and other stores for under $20 that are full tang very heavy duty.

The following picks below are my excellent knives for bushcraft (from left to right). The first one is an U.S. Military Air Force survival knife with sharpening stone in sheath ($10 at a flea market). The second is a vintage Stolinger German made hunting knife from a flea market, with genuine stag handle. It was dirty and dull but became nice with a little elbow grease ($5.00). The third is an off the store rack commercial full tang heavy duty hunting knife from a few years ago ($3.00).

kit02390

It’s also prudent to have a back-up knife in the form of perhaps a pocket folder or a food steak knife.

Fishing and Hunting Tools

The most common in the field bushcraft methods of collecting wild game for food besides hunting with a weapon, is by trapping and fishing. Fishing kits are also subjective and depending upon your skill can range from some simple drag line and a hook to a cool, but pricey take down micro fishing rod and reel and compact lures that fits discreetly in your bag.

Trapping with snares is a particularly torturous way for the poor animal of getting meat for yourself because of the inefficient killing nature of the snare, especially if you are not an expert with it, which almost nobody is.

Once had an old timer tell me he could taste the bitter difference in a rabbit killed with a snare, and one killed quickly with a bullet because of the systemic adrenaline spike and fear hormone release when the critter is dying in a slow, painful way. UGH! The snare shown in the picture below is a special design which doesn’t require the primitive diy figure 4 trigger and is a bit more effective in catching the poor critter, but still not that humane, but is compact and light enough and a quicker set up for a justified addition to your kit.

A quicker way would be one of those flat folding trapper style spring traps, which are more like They come in all sizes and usually ensure a quick clean demise if baited correctly, and fit not that badly in a kit or on a belt (approx. $10). A squirrel to raccoon size is shown in the picture below.

A word of caution: don’t even think you can just keep one of these in your kit and when the time comes you’ll just figure out how to use it. One or two broken or lacerated fingers later while you’re out bushcrafting, and I guarantee your enthusiasm for conquering the wilderness will change right back to the video game playing couch potato you might have once been. Get serious hands on training by someone who knows what they’re doing before playing with traps. And if you do have a trap in your kit, don’t forget a small container of peanut butter for bait.

Water and Cooking Containers

Again, there are a variety of choices here also, so research and make up your own mind on this. The military canteens and mess kits are always a good deal. The one in the last picture below is a sturdy aluminum two pot European model for $3.95.

The Axe

For firewood and heavier woodcraft than you’d use your hunting knife for as well as other construction utility, an axe is indispensable. Also known as a hatchet, these extremely useful tools come in various types and styles.

The solo bushcrafter will usually opt for the smaller one-handed version that’s shorter and can be worn on the belt or in your Kit Bag if it fits like the one in the picture here does. It costs $2.00 at the flea market but $10.00 new almost anywhere.

I know there are a lot of cool compact portable saws and wire chain saw type devices you pull back and forth over the wood with a handle in each hand, but you better have the upper body power of a Gorilla to actually get enough done for a full day’s firewood. Where an axe is much faster, easier, and more efficient, again, if learn the proper way to chop with it.

kit02387

This, That, and the Other…

Well there it is. You now have a good basic bushcraft kit for around $35. Of course as time and money permit you will be changing or adding things depending upon your type of bushcrafting adventures and practice. For instance, if you are doing a lot of hunting and game dressing for the campfire cook out, you’ll want to carry more sanitary ‘wet wipes’ in a plastic sealed food pouch.

In the kit bag above I carry a few extras like a compass, a hand crank flashlight/radio, (not shown) a flask of 190 proof grain alcohol…and whatever else I might find useful if it fits.

After a hard day of chopping wood and setting up camp with a basic sleeping shelter, I don’t mind kicking back by the warm campfire and enjoying the sunset with a little background music, and a sip or two of libation as the night owls and other critters begin their evening concert…

I also like a small first aid kit, a mylar tube tent and a mylar blanket (also good for making a solar still), 50’ of paracord, and a day or so worth of emergency food rations. All cozy and comfy in the  bushcraft bag. Ready to go at a moment’s notice when the time comes where I’ll always know that…

“…the forest is lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep…and miles to go before I sleep…and miles to go before I sleep…”

Do it Yourself Pen Jaws for Your Home Workshop Projects

by Brian F

This is an entry in our non-fiction writing contest

As winter progress’s I have been looking for new wood things to add to the sale shelf. So recently I took the plunge into making pens. I got the starter kit from a box store and thought I have this whipped! Well not so much, I quickly realized I needed a stable way to hold the little wood blanks to drill pilot holes through.

I looked over several websites and online groups, I asked a few questions and got the same old answers, buy this, and buy that. A special vise was 50.00 plus shipping, jaws for the generic vice...

cold weaponsAt the time of this writing, our Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms are under serious attack. Obama and others have vowed to take our guns away, supposedly making the world a safer place. In reality, it’s not about making anyone safer, it’s about giving them total control.

Mankind was killing one another long before the invention of the firearm. Ever since man first realized that sticks and stones could hurt, they have used anything they could find as a weapon.

There are choices to be made, but don’t rely on Hollywood movies when estimating what using them means. Learn your limits, as it takes a lot of skills and practice to use them for your defense.

Bows

Bows were the most common distance weapon in use throughout the world for centuries. There are many things to like about bows, as they are lightweight, accurate and can shoot a fair distance. With practice, one can become extremely accurate with one and even learn to shoot it rather rapidly. On top of all this, they have the advantage of being a silent weapon: other than the “twang” of the bowstring, there’s nothing to hear.

I personally like bows and if I were to find myself in a situation where I felt it was necessary to leave my home and go hunting for adversaries, I would probably pick a bow over a rifle. To me, the advantage of being able to attack my enemies silently, without them knowing where the shots are coming from, surpasses the superior firepower of the rifle. Of course, I would take a sawed-off shotgun and a pistol with me for close work.

Most bow hunters will only use a bow to kill game at up to 40 yards, although the bow itself will easily kill out to double that distance. That makes it possible to use a bow for most outdoor home defense scenarios, although it isn’t anywhere near as effective for use as an indoor weapon. The amount of space one needs for drawing a bow makes it almost impossible to use it effectively indoors.

If you choose to buy a bow for a secondary weapon, then practice, practice, practice. You can’t get good with a bow anywhere near as fast as you can with a rifle or even a pistol. This is a weapon which requires much more skill to use effectively; but with that skill, it can be quite effective.

Knives

Knives have a great psychological impact on an adversary. Something about looking at a sharp piece of steel in an opponent’s hand, knowing that it might be residing in your guts in a few minutes, is enough to make even the stoutest of heart waver. Even so, using a knife effectively as a weapon is difficult. Unless you have had extensive training, don’t think you can use one to defend yourself.

Having said that, I still recommend having a knife. When everything else stops working, that knife might just take out your last adversary. Besides, there is nothing you would need more if you find yourself in a disaster situation: you’ll need it for catching and preparing food, building a shelter or making your way out.

For a knife to be effective as a weapon it needs to be the right knife and it needs to be used the right way. True fighting knives are much different than hunting knives, which are single bladed, although some are sharpened partially down the back side.

The best fighting knives are double-bladed, being sharpened down the whole of the back edge. This type of knife is known as the Fairburn, named for its inventor, Bruce Fairburn, who came up with the design while serving in China. The advantage of the Fairburn style knife over other styles is the ease of penetration that it offers. It can also cut in both directions when slashing. These may seem like small differences, but in an actual knife fight, they can be enormous advantages.

True knife fighters always hold the knife low, with the point of the knife upwards. Stabbing someone from above is another Hollywood invention. The human body is fairly well armored for protection from stabs that come from above. Between the shoulder bones and the ribcage, the most that a stab from above can do is muscle damage. On the other hand, the human body has almost no natural armor from stabs from down low. You can much more easily stab an enemy in the gut, causing serious damage, by stabbing from below.

Never try using a folding knife for a self-defense weapon. There’s too much of a chance of it folding on your fingers, hurting you instead of your assailant. Even lock-blades can’t be counted on, as there is always the possibility of accidently triggering the lock.

guide-to-survival-and-pocket-knives

Throwing Knives

Throwing knives has a lot of sex appeal, mostly because it’s showy. However, as a means of self-defense, it doesn’t hold much value. Hollywood has always shown victims who were attacked by a throwing knife as being hit in the chest or the back. Once again, the body’s natural armor comes to the victim’s aid. Considering how a throwing knife flips when it is thrown, it’s almost impossible to penetrate the rib cage with one.

I learned how to throw knives years ago, thinking it would be useful for self-defense. That was before I realized how hard to target a human body really is. The only place that it would be effective to hit someone with a throwing knife would be the lower abdomen, hitting the stomach from the front, or the kidneys from the back. This greatly limits the utility of a throwing knife.

Swords

A sword can be a fearsome weapon in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Of course, in our modern world, there are very few people who have any idea of how to use a sword effectively. Unless you are a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, you have probably never held a real sword in your hands, let alone tried to hit an opponent with one.

Learning how to use a sword requires even more practice than learning how to use a bow or knife. Having said that, if I was up against an opponent armed with a knife, I’d rather have a sword in my hands. The greater reach of a sword does hold some advantage over a knife.

Using a sword requires an incredible amount of upper body strength. The soldiers of olden times, who were limited to the use of the sword, instead of an assault rifle, had to be incredibly strong, especially to manage to wield a sword for an entire day’s battling. Unless you are much stronger than I, you won’t be able to use a sword for a prolonged engagement.

For most people, knives, swords and other such weapons are actually more of a liability than they are an asset. Their lack of ability to effectively use these weapons means that they are ineffective against their enemies. On top of that there is always the risk that the enemy can take the weapon away from you and use it against you. For that reason, avoid these weapons, except as a last resort, unless you have the time and resources to train in using them properly.

Sticks, Staves and Clubs

This category of weapons are referred to as “melee weapons” and can include anything that can be put on a stick, including axes and maces. The really great thing about this category of weapon is that it really doesn’t require any training. Simply grab what’s available and start swinging.

While you’re not going to accomplish much against a pistol-wielding bandit with an axe or stick, you will against one who doesn’t have a firearm. I saw an interesting demonstration once, done by people who were experts in the use of medieval weaponry. One man with an axe was able to hold off four men armed with swords. His advantage was that he could just go wild with that axe, while his opponents needed to look for an opening in which to attack.

If it comes down to the point where an intruder gets into your home and comes at you, while you’re unarmed, grab whatever is at hand and start swinging. If he’s got a gun, you’re not going to do real well, but if he’s got a knife, you’ve got the advantage.

Throwing Stars

Throwing stars, more properly called “shuriken” are another weapon that Hollywood has glamorized. In the movies, people get killed by expertly thrown metal stars, thrown by some martial arts expert or other. In reality, it’s almost impossible to do more than cause a scratch with one.

The shuriken was invented as a distraction weapon. In other words, to distract someone long enough to run away. If a ninja was caught in the act, they would throw a couple of shuriken at whoever discovered them, and dive through the closest window to make their escape. Used in that way, they are highly effective.

The other problem with shuriken is that it takes a lot of practice to become proficient enough to use them effectively. Having experimented with them, I know how hard it is to throw one accurately. If you’ve only got seconds to act, it’s better to fill your hand with something that’s going to be able to do your adversary some real harm.

Martial Arts Weapons

Most of the martial arts weapons started out as tools. In ancient times, farmers and artisans were forced to figure out how to use these tools as weapons, as they were denied ownership of any real weapons. Used by an expert, they can be very effective, but used by an amateur, they’re a good way of getting yourself hurt.

These weapons require lots of training and practice to use effectively. Swinging a pair of nunchuku (commonly called “nunchucks”) around to impress your friends isn’t going to prepare you to use them against anyone who manages to break into your home. When that happens, you’re more likely to hit yourself in the head, than you are to hit them.

Having anything in your hand is better than having nothing. Unless you are so highly trained in martial arts techniques that you can kill a person with your hands alone, you’re better off using almost anything, including these cold weapons. And if you have to chose one, do it wisely, according to your skills and abilities.

Bugging Out - Evacuating a City During Social Unrest

B Dennis Diaz
Picture
Society can be fragile. There are some hot buttons that can spark tempers and erupt into serious outrage. The outrage among the people spreads like wildfire and before you know it, you have angry mobs tearing things up and making life dangerous. The government will send in police and military forces to try and control the uprising, but this typically makes things more dangerous for a short while. The rage blinds the people and they can no longer tell the difference between friendly, peaceful people and those who wish to take them down.

Just recently, I posted a video in our Facebook group (The Bugout Network) about an episode where violence broke out in central Athens, as tens of thousands marched to the Greek Parliament during a general strike. Locally we’ve also seen how easy events like these, can erupt and throw a whole city into chaos.

If you happen to get caught in a city where social unrest is quickly escalating and it is no longer safe to be in the area, you have to bug out. The danger comes from all sides. The unruly mobs are a risk as are the military and police who are trying to control the situation. Your life is in danger and you have to get out. Evacuating the city without being noticed is going to be tricky. Getting noticed could be deadly.

Picture

The following are some key tips that will help you quietly get out of the city relatively unscathed.

Be Inconspicuous

You need to get out of the city without anybody realizing what you are doing—on either side. It will be important you stay out of sight as much as possible. If you are with a large group of people, it is best to travel in a single file line. Always travel in the wee hours of the morning, between about 2 and 5. This is when it is likely to be the quietest. It also gives you the cover of night.

Stay in the shadows and up against buildings. The buildings will provide you with some cover and help conceal you. Wear dark clothing that blends in with the night. Obviously, being as quiet as possible will be a must. If you have young children, make sure they are well aware of the need to be quiet. Make it a game if that works better.

Never travel during the bewitching hours, which would be anywhere from dark until about 2 in the morning. Looters and rioters are going to take advantage of the cover of darkness.

Go with the Flow

If you are caught up in a mob or there are large crowds brewing, you can use them as cover. Stay along the fringes of the crowd. Don't get caught up in the chanting or any other violent actions that may be happening. Keep your head down and avoid making eye contact with the participants if possible. When it is safe to do so, casually step away from the group.

If you are with a group of people, you don't want to all leave the mob at the same time. A few at a time who casually slink away will be less likely to be noticed. Move to the edge and pretend to tie a shoe or simply hide behind a car or building.

Avoid getting caught between a fence and the mob or a wall of any kind and the mob. You could easily become trapped and even smashed.

Avoid Commercial Areas

When you are planning your route out of the city, do what you can to stick to residential neighborhoods. Looters and rioters are going to be more concentrated in commercial areas where they can loot goods. Grocery stores are not going to be a top priority in the beginning, but eventually the looting will get there. Electronics stores, the mall, department stores and convenience stores are going to be the most at risk. Avoid those areas and you will likely avoid the majority of the crowds.

Hide

Know what buildings are empty and prepare to hide in them if a mob happens to form or make their way down your evacuation route. If you can avoid detection, you will be better off. Keep in mind; police are not going to be a lot of help if they happen to see you skulking about. They don't know who is a part of the angry mob and who isn't. They are more likely to attack first and ask questions later.

Avoid Crowded Areas

It only take a few people to start a riot. They will encourage others to stand with them and before you know it, a crowded shopping center or a busy street in the city has become a very dangerous place. Riots are more likely to break out in areas where there are a lot of people. If you have an idea things are tense, avoid those areas at all costs.

Be Prepared

Because you never know when civil unrest may erupt, you should always be prepared. Have an evacuation plan in place. You don't want to take the most obvious routes out of the city. You want to stay off the beaten path as much as possible. Running into others who are fleeing the city could be dangerous. You never know if they share your same moral values and will not harm you or your group.

Part of being prepared means having bug out bags packed and ready to go at a moment's notice. A bug out bag should contain the supplies and gear you need to get out of the city and into a safe place that will not be effected by the unrest. Have a place in mind where you plan on seeking refuge. This can be a relative's home, a retreat or under the open stars in a safe place. Have at least two routes planned out of the city, just in case the first is blocked. You will also want to communicate plans to every member of your family. Have a place to meet up so you can all evacuate together.

When civil unrest begins to brew, that is the time to evacuate the city. Pay attention to what is happening in the city as well as across the country. Often times, riots can be predicted. If you hear or sense something isn't right, it is time to react. Don't wait until the city is literally going up in flames before you get out.

An Outsiders View on Prepping

By Roy E

This is an entry in our non-fiction writing contest

In studying everything, I can out there, I have noticed a few things that a lot of preppers have not thought about or don’t mention enough. If a major SHTF situation occurs we won’t just be set back a hundred years, we will be set back to a time when basic trade of staple foods and other crucial items will be gone for many years. We also might want to rethink a few things we want to acquire for one reason or another. Here is a list everyone might want to think about.

1) Communication: Do we really want to invest in...

3 Signs The Economic Crash Will Hit Us In 2016

Economic crash

Never before in the history of the United States have so many top authorities agreed on one thing: the end of the US Dollar is almost here, and a global economic crisis will start in 2016.

This is very, very clear.

“Cash is trash.” – Robert Kiyosaki

“Dollar is going down.” – Donald Trump

“A U.S. financial crisis—greater than the crisis of 2008—is fast approaching… and this crisis will be very different from the last one.” – Ron Paul

“The Dollar As We Know It Will Be Gone Within 6 Years.” – Mike Maloney

“The American people have no idea they are paying the bill.” – G. Edward Griffin

And if you hold your wealth in banks, personal real estate or stocks, you need to stop what you are doing. Listen to what I am going to say, and pay very close attention, or when the economic crisis hits, you will be the one footing the bill, losing a majority of your savings, and working many years after you had planned to.

You see, in an extremely rare culmination of events, 3 key indicators all point at one conclusion: there will be a crash in 2016. And if it’s as big as some of these folks say it’s going to be, the US government will be coming after all of your civil liberties: your livelihood, your guns, and possibly your very freedom. The government will come after your livelihood to pay their debts, your guns so you can’t protect yourself, and your liberty if you object to the first two.

And I know, it seems too crazy to be true, but as you will see in just a minute, that is also part of their plan. I founded my company in 2010, when it became abundantly clear to me that the reason the economy got smashed in 2008, was going to happen again – and this next time was going to be ten times worse. But luckily for some of us, there is a way out. If, and only if you take the necessary steps now to avoid what they have in store for you.

So who is “they”? Sounds dubious, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. “They” are the big bankers and corrupt politicians that continue to steal from the hard working population in order to line their own pockets and bail out their buddies, while the middle class and little guys suffer. They are the IMF. They are the Federal Reserve. They are Wall Street. They are Politicians. And according to many credible sources, they will be the ones that walk away from the next big crash unscathed, while folks like us suffer.

How Do You Know What’s Coming?

There are three things that need to be revealed to you, in plain and simple terms:

  1. How the 2016 economic crisis, will go down, according to many authorities, who have been correct on the matter a number of times;
  2. What traps the government have already put in place to take what’s left of your civil liberties, including confiscation of the majority of your wealth; and
  3. How you can take simple and inexpensive steps to protect your wealth by getting it beyond the desperate clutches of a broke government.

But first, I want to reveal the 3 major economic indicators that our economy is past due for collapse:

  1. The 7 Year Economic Crash Cycle has expired;
  2. The Presidential Hand Off is about to take place; and
  3. We’ve Reached a Critical Mass of Printing Money.

There is a theory called the “7 Year Cycle” which pretty accurately predicts that every 7 years or so, the stock market crashes. This trend started in 1966, with a serious credit crunch and liquidity crisis. 7 Years later, in 1973 marked the oil embargo crisis, and oil prices skyrocketed. In 1980, banks and brokerage houses nearly avoided a collapse by a last minute change to margin calls on shorting commodities. Interest rates topped at 22%.

And in 1987, the Dow lost 22% in one day. Seven years later, in 1994, the bond market crashed. And in 2001 (7 more years), Wall Street was hit hard after the attacks of 9/11. You remember what happened in 2008.

So why didn’t we see a crash in 2015? We should of, and I will tell you why we haven’t yet in just a minute. But just so you know, this “7 year cycle” crash could hit any day. The storm that is brewing is heightened by the fact that 2016 is an election year, so the “blame” can be pawned off on the candidate who’s time is finished (Obama) while the “New Hope” for our nation is being revealed.

And who will that be? The two front runners for the Democratic party are equally terrifying. Hillary because she is majorly in the big banks’ pockets, and Bernie because he is a self-proclaimed socialist. And the votes are already bought and paid for. Because there are so many people relying on the government for support, or to get their illegal family members into the country legally, that the nation has become Socialist and the Democratic Candidate is very likely to win.

And do you know what that will do to the stock market? Hint: its bad! Or the price of gold? Hint: It’s good if you know where to buy and hold your gold, which 87% of people do not.

The only reason the seven year cycle didn’t hit in 2015 is that we are printing money at proportions greater than ever. The federal reserve has increased the money supply through “Quantitative Easing” and buying and holding crap bonds. And the United States national debt has nearly quadrupled since 2001, from 5 trillion to over 18 trillion. Make no mistake. The “QE” program and printing is the only reason we have not been hit with the biggest economic crash that anyone can remember. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security, because it’s coming.

If this is shocking or hard for you to believe, please know that you are not alone. And it’s not your fault. It’s a very common and natural thing to believe that everything is fine, and is going to be okay. It’s so common that they even have a clinical phrase for it. It’s called “Normalcy Bias.”

And normalcy bias affects every single one of us. Even me. It is something that you must address in yourself. It is the mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster and worse, the effects. Normalcy bias is the reason that any Jew remained in Germany after 1930. Or any resident of New Orleans remained in the city after the first levy broke. It is a real thing, and it paralyzes people.

I will address it during an upcoming video conference so we can know this about ourselves, and move past it to see the problem, and therefore help ourselves.

Here Is What They Have Planned for Your Savings

While the rumblings of this economic upheaval have been set into motion since the so-called “recovery” after the last crash in 2008, the threats have never been as clear as they are today. And as we’ve learned, a number of highly respected and credible analysts have all predicted that the end of the US Dollar is here, and the crash is coming in 2016. But this time, and unlike 2008, the game is different, the players are smarter, and the stakes are so much higher.

And I hate to say it, but the traps are already set. And we are the mice. You are smart enough to know that the problems with this economy are systematic, and the solutions that worked to “fix” the problem in 2008, are no longer available to us.

What do I mean the solutions are no longer available? Well, the idea that anyone is “too big to fail” will not work in this new economy, and the Policy makers and bankers know this. They know the tax payer will no longer foot the bill for big banker’s mistakes. So what have they done? They have taken serious and decisive action to protect themselves (and not you) when their house of cards falls this next time.

And sadly, for millions of Americans, there will be no way out. I am talking about bail-in banking models, and capital controls like FACTA. And if you are thinking to yourself, “The economy is fine, we don’t have a thing to worry about.” You need to think again, and hear exactly what they are planning for you, your money, your passport, and your livelihood. This can happen in America, it has happened in America, and if you don’t do something to help yourself, it could very well happen to you.

1) Bail-In Model

First and foremost, the “Bail In” model means that the government will confiscate your savings during a crisis. If you think I am exaggerating, you only need to look back 2 years ago to what happened in a little country called Cyrpus. What’s more terrifying, is what the IMF said about Cyprus.

But if you have saving in the bank, you need to learn more about how to protect your savings. And another thing you should be asking yourself is: why they are collecting all of the new data they are collecting about your finances? Like FACTA.

2) FACTA

FACTA is a classic Big Government move: first, find out where the assets are located, so later, they can be levied. Governments do this to round up guns, money, and even food. And in 2014, the US began requiring that its citizens and even its resident aliens report all foreign accounts. Even if these accounts are 100% legal – they must all be reported so that the government knows exactly where to go to collect.

And finally, when the collapse does happen, you will see some major restraints on the movement of your money. These are called “Capital Controls.”

3) Capital Controls (Private and Public)

During Greece’s latest collapse, banks shut their doors, and ATMs were limited to a $50 per day disbursement, before many of them ran out of money. Things got pretty ugly, and turned back to a barter system–something that often happens in a collapse. And you may not know this, but we are already trained to accept capital controls from our government.

Have you ever left the country and had to tick the box on a form if you are carrying more than $10,000 across the border? That is a Capital Control. And in a collapse, that number will be reduced to less than $200. Just ask the citizens of Argentina, who experienced this in 2012. Learning how to avoid these private and government controls of your money is one thing that you really need to do before it’s too late.

Because remember: if you can’t access your money, how will you buy anything you need to survive? You won’t. Unless you take the next step and learn how this seemingly terrible situation can actually mean financial freedom for you.

I have helped thousands of people get ready for this scenario, in what I like to call a “No Risk” situation. Here’s what I mean: there are a few ways to prepare for this scenario that cost you very little, and if I am wrong, and the economy only gets better forever, you still have not lost much compared to what happens if I am right.

Look, any time you “invest” your money – there is a risk. Stocks plummet, real estate crashes, and banks refuse to hand over your money. But there is one thing that historically increases during this type of economic upheaval, and when the shit really hits the fan, this one thing will be your savior: Physical Gold and Silver.

The thing with gold and silver is this: it has value regardless of what the economy does. Since the dawn of human time, people have used these metals as jewelry, for trade, and for machinery. And unless this 2,000 year practice all of a sudden stops tomorrow, physical metals will hold much of their value.

And I wish it was as simple as telling you: “Go buy gold.” But it’s not. They have made sure of that. These folks are not stupid. And they learned their lesson last time the entire system almost came crumbling to knees. They saw how people like me, who saw the writing on the wall, made money on the crises. They know how some people are trying to subvert their efforts, and they have got almost all of their bases covered. Note: I said almost.

If you know their plan, then you can make your own. And there are ways right now to get your wealth beyond their grasp, and into an asset class that they cannot reach. And by now, I hope the problem is clear. A crash is coming in 2016, your wealth is at stake, especially if it’s held in the bank, in your personal real estate, or in your 401k. You are at risk of losing all you have worked to save, unless you learn how to preserve your savings.

You don’t have to believe me, rather, you only need to look back 8 years ago to see what happened then, and you know, this time it will be worse. These institutions have not gotten healthier or stronger. In fact, they’ve become more cancerous and pervasive. And this time, there will be no saving graces. They have made sure that you and I will be the ones left to suffer. Unless we get this insurance and protect ourselves right now.

Once the collapse comes, it will be too late, unless you act now, and that is what I am here to help you do. That is why we have just arranged for you to join us on a video conference call this week. We don’t want you to miss out on any of this life-changing information. And you won’t regret it. Click on the banner below to secure your spot now!
