Why Preparing For Natural Disasters Is Critical

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

The major problem with these natural disasters is that we cannot completely prevent all the damage they cause rather we can minimize the damage they do or prevent any further damage.

What did you do to prep this week

Oh wow! That’s all that I can say… another week already! The older I get the fast that the time seems to pass, I’m afraid that one day I’ll go to bed and get up the next morning, stumble into the bathroom and see an old man looking back at me in the mirror.

When you’re a child you can’t wait to grow up and be an adult but then when it happens it hits like a ton of bricks, and you soon realize that it isn’t all that great, and deep in the back of your mind you sometimes travel back to those carefree childhood days to escape the reality that is the...

Prep Blog Review: The Good Ol’ Medicine

prep blog reviewWhat’s good about the old, tried and tested remedies is not only that they work, it’s that they work in times of struggle, when other options are not available. Makes sense, right? After all, if they managed to keep our ancestors healthy, they will surely be useful once SHTF (but before that, too).

So let’s take a look at four articles we found this week (plus, we published our own take on the subject last Sunday) that will help us stay on top of our health the good old fashioned way.

1. 16 Tips to Help You Deal with Seasonal Allergies After TEOTWAWKI

allergies“Spring is upon us and so are seasonal allergies.  Now I have bad allergies and over the years have spent some miserable springs and falls.

Now much of what I do to mitigate them goes out the window when the system fails.  I can no longer hide in an air-conditioned house and most medications will be in short supply.  So what is the solution?”

2. Homegrown Pain Relief/Leaf

garden“I just visited my first pot shop and all I can say is, wow, man. Cannabis use is legal in Washington State, so we can buy and use various forms of cannabis treats as well as trips. There are bonbon bombs and brownies, bongs and assorted pedigreed splif-stuffings as well as more mundane ointments and salves.

I was in search of a cannabis cream that has helped a surprising number of my friends find relief from arthritis pains as well as sore muscles and aching joints. My amazing massage therapist had used some on my hands and back and the result sent me straight off to the local den of iniquity with very rewarding results.”

3. 7 Old-Fashioned, Grandma-Approved Health Remedies That Actually Do Work

grandma remedies“Many old health remedies are defined by folklore, myth and the varying claims of natural healers across the centuries. Beyond the claims, however, studies have shown that certain natural remedies actually can provide effective relief for illness and disease.

Here are seven of the best natural remedies that have stood the test of time.”

4. How To Make A First Aid Kit For Survival

First aid kit isolated on white“How to make a first aid kit for survival has been on my mind a lot lately. I’m grateful I have neighbors who will call me when they have giant hives and ask if I have some Benadryl. Of course, I do.

His wife called me and the first thing I asked his wife was, “is he having trouble breathing, because if he is call 911”. This is the third time I have been over to help this wonderful neighbor of mine. He was not having trouble breathing, thank goodness! I asked, “does it feel like your airway is closing?” He said no to his wife who relayed that message to me as I’m talking on my cell phone running over to their house with my bottle of Benadryl.”

The DIY CNC Machine You Must Know How To Build!

CNC MachineIf you’re the type of person who likes to build things on your own, you know that the equipment needed to complete larger projects is dauntingly expensive. As a matter of fact, if you’ve looked at commercial machines, you’ve probably come to the conclusion that it’s cheaper in most cases to just buy the product than it is to buy the equipment to do it yourself.

Well, that time is past. I put my thinking cap on and came up with a design that allows you to build your very own Computer Numerical Control machine for a fraction of the cost of its commercial equivalent. The advantages of an automated woodworking machine are that you get precision and save hours that you would normally invest in creating each piece by hand.

I’ve created some videos that walk you through the process of building both a hobby CNC and a professional CNC, and the process is much easier than you probably imagine that it could be.

This project started from the need to create some parts for a mechanical project I was working on. I was in need of three plastic gears, and the first thing I did was to go to a local workshop and have them fabricated.

After a few days, I got my gears. I went home to test them out on the motor I was making; they were the right size, but something was off. When I was turning them, I saw that the gears were actually oval instead of round. I paid $100 bucks for some oval plastic gears that wouldn’t even work for the project I was working on.

I live in a small city and at that time, there were no professional workshops with automated machines to make proper gears for me. Out of curiosity, I begin searching online to learn how these gears were made. I stumbled upon some articles about a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine. Basically, it’s a milling machine controlled by your personal computer.

This piqued my interest and set me on a totally different path; it made me want to build this machine so that I could build the parts I needed for my projects on my own instead of paying for oval gears that wouldn’t even work for me.

Starting from not knowing what a CNC is, up to getting my first hobby CNC version up and running took two weeks, including the time it took for the parts I ordered to arrive. It was a surprisingly simple build. The only issue I had was setting up the drivers with the computer software.

There are a lot of settings to create if you don’t have a base to start with but now I have a configuration file that just needs to be copied and pasted. You can change a few settings if you have a different make of motor, or need a different size on the CNC. That’s all there is to it and you’re good to go.

There are commercial versions of CNC machines, but they start at about $3000 for a basic machine. You can build it on your own for less than $500.

In the video you’ve watched, you could see two versions of CNC machines. The Hobby version cost me around $400 and took about 4 days to build it and get it up and running once I had all the parts. The commercial equivalent for that table size is $4600, which means I saved $4200! The only difference is that the commercial one has some aluminum insertions and a lighter wood frame.

You can choose to make yours out of any material you have laying around. There are also DIY ways of making the bearings so cheap that you can build 80% of the CNC on your own, and just buy the motors and drivers.

Here’s an example of linear bearings made from cheap bearings. The first picture below is the DIY version:

linear bearings

And here is the commercial version:

Commercial version

We didn’t do it with this build, but I wanted to let you know that you have an option to want to make it even cheaper than we paid using some retail parts.

A Few Words about Costs

On the bigger version of the CNC, the one we called “The Professional Version”, we made it out of steel, with big motors, bigger drivers, bigger everything.  It’s pretty costly for a DIY project, but it makes sense to have it if you are serious about getting into this business and you need more or larger parts built  in a hurry.

The entire build cost $5800 with shipping of parts included. As I said, the price sounds pretty high, but compared with buying the retail one, we saved more than $30,000. The size of the machine is 11 feet by 8 feet, so you can probably build a small boat on it.

You can make any type and shape of furniture you can imagine on this machine, without an army of workers drilling holes and sculpting and carving wood. The only thing you will need to do is put the material on the table, hit the run button on the software, and make sure you are using the proper tool for that job. That’s all there is to it.

As I stated in the video, we have documented these two builds already, edited most of the videos and have begun working on a written version of this guide, with photos and diagrams so that everyone can properly understand what is going on.

The purpose of this article is to find out if people would like to see this guide commercialized. We want to know if you would like to watch this type of guide that takes you through the process of building and using a CNC from beginning to end.

With that as our goal, please tell us what you think in the comments section below. If there are parts of the video that you found confusing, or that you’d like us to expound upon, we really need to know about it now. We appreciate your help and look forward to the feedback.

Tips On Saving Seeds

Guest post by – Jerry G

There are no guarantees in this world we live in today. We can’t rest assured that the grocery store will always be there or that its shelves will always be stocked full of food. We can’t count on our local home supply store having rows and rows of different seed packets to choose from if we were to ever need to grow our own food. We need to face the reality that things may “go south”, and if they do, we’ll only be able to count on ourselves, and the skills and knowledge we have acquired, in order to survive.

In this, my first guest blog for...

Could Clinton Actually Go To Jail?

Hillary

Hillary Clinton’s run for the presidency has been plagued by a constant string of scandals. Yet somehow she still manages to stay in the primaries and even to stand out as the Democrat front-runner.

But I guess we shouldn’t be surprised; after all, her husband had so many scandals while he was in office, that he became known as the “Teflon President.” Of course, he’s not the only one to ever win that title, but he was one of them.

But now, Hillary has her own list. Some are shared with her husband, but there are many more which are hers alone, not having anything to do with his presidency. Starting with Benghazi and running through her e-mail scandal, it seems like there’s nothing that Hillary does, which doesn’t rate high on the scandal meter.

The sad thing is that her followers don’t seem to care. Now, I realize that there have been many cases of political groupies who didn’t care about the scandals of their favorite candidate.

But there’s a difference between a scandal based upon not liking a politician’s decision, one that’s based on made-up “evidence” and one that exists because the politician either broke or severely bent the law. The collection that Hilary is building seems to fall into that last category, rather than the first.

While the List Itself Is Extensive, Here Are a Just a Few Highlights:

  • Benghazi – It seems pretty clear that Hillary was complacent in the death of Ambassador Stevens and three others. She didn’t allow them to be rescued and she tried to cover up what really happened.
  • Private e-mail server – Her use of a private, unsecured server for official business, including for highly classified material.
  • Clinton foundation – The Clinton Foundation seems to have been used as a back-door to give bribes to Hillary, for favors while she was the Secretary of State
  • Speaking fees – While not illegal, does anyone really think that Hillary is worth $200,000 for a one hour speech? Sounds like another back-door to getting her favors.
  • Cover-up for Bill’s mistakes – Hillary was apparently the prime mover in threatening and coercing women who accused Bill of rape to not press charges. Quite a woman’s rights advocate there, isn’t she?
  • Selling uranium to Russia – Somehow or other, Hillary used her position as Secretary of State to sell a fifth of our nation’s uranium, a vital natural resource to Russia.
  • Stealing from the White House – While this happened at the end of Bill’s presidency, he was complacent in the crime. Between the two of them, they managed to take almost $200,000 worth of art and other goodies from the White House. They were forced to return it, but anyone else would have gone to jail.

There are many others that could be added to this list, but these are the biggies; and besides, that’s enough anyway. Any one of those should be enough to send her to jail, but up to now, nothing has happened.

Sadly, many of our nation’s top politicians seem to think that they are above the law. While I won’t say that either party has a corner on that market, the Democrats seem to be better at it than anyone else. Somehow, they have claimed the Jesuit argument of the end justifying the means for themselves, and use it as justification for any number of crimes.

That doesn’t just mean a good political result either. I guess if they did it to accomplish something good it would be one thing, but all too often, it’s about building their own wealth. Considering that Hillary was supposedly broke when she and Bill left the White House, doesn’t it seem at least a little suspicious that she’s supposedly worth $40 million today?

But, it seems like it all might finally be catching up with her. The FBI is working on concluding their months long investigation into her use of a private e-mail server while employed as the Secretary of State. That alone was illegal, but what is even worse is that she allowed her private server to be used for the transmission of highly sensitive, classified information.

This really isn’t something where she can claim ignorance and get away with a slap on the hand. As a top-tier executive in the administration, she would be made aware of the rules involving classified information and would have signed some rather frightening documents which listed the penalties to be paid if she broke those laws. So her actions were taken with her eyes open. There may have been stars in her eyes, blinding them, but they were definitely open.

One of the documents which has been uncovered all but told the terrorists how to kill Ambassador Stevens. That makes her directly involved in his murder, and carries the charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

The thing is, nobody knows who read her e-mail. Since it was on an unsecured server, there’s a very good chance that any number of enemies had access to it. Both China and Russia have invested enormous effort into building their cyber-warfare corps; developing the means to break into other countries computer systems, both for the purpose of spying on them and shutting them down.

But Clinton’s server wouldn’t even have required that level of expertise. Since it was an unsecured server, pretty much any hacker could find their way in. It wouldn’t have taken the resources of a nation-state. So, terrorist organizations and others who wish us ill will could have been given access to some of our country’s deepest secrets. U.S. citizens couldn’t know those things, but our enemies could, thanks to the Secretary of State.

What’s Really Behind all This?

The Bilderberg Group has endorsed Hillary for president, something that the liberal news media is studiously ignoring. These are the liberal movers and shakers in the world, the ones who are behind the movement for a one-world order. Could they have ordered her to make her e-mail accessible, in exchange for their support? We will probably never know.

So where are we now? The FBI has stated that they are about finished with their investigation and are going to push for an indictment of Hillary. The big question is whether or not that will mean anything.

The FBI works for the Department of Justice (DOJ), historically one of the most non-partisan branches of our government. But under Obama’s rule, first Eric Holder and now Loretta Lynch have turned it into a political bludgeon to be used against anyone who doesn’t support Obama’s plan to fundamentally change the United States of America.

Rather than trying to capture criminals, the DOJ today is much more involved in trying to imprison white police officers when they are forced to shoot black criminals, attack Christian businesses when they don’t bow down to the LGBT agenda and harass the firearms industry to run them out of business. Now, their latest crusade is apparently going to be to go after climate change deniers and imprison them for the damage they are doing to the environment.

This is the same organization who has to decide to try Hillary Clinton. In testimony before Congress, the Attorney General has already dodged questions about whether she will seek an indictment and go forward to prosecute Hillary. That makes it seem like she doesn’t plan on doing so.

Of course, this is all being orchestrated in the White House. Whether Obama is doing it himself, or his lapdog Valerie Jarrett is doing it, it’s essentially the same thing. Ultimately, it may all be pulled out of the hands of the Department of Justice by Obama himself, simply by giving her executive amnesty. Actually, it’s kind of surprising that he hasn’t already offered her that.

But here’s the kicker. Rumblings are coming out of the FBI that the director, James Comey, as well as other senior FBI officials are preparing to go public with the case. That has never happened before in FBI history. The FBI is known for being sticklers for “the book” and one of the key things that the book says is not to talk about ongoing cases and investigations.

However, should Comey decide to resign over this case and the mishandling of it at DOJ level, it would send an earthquake through Washington. More than a warning shot across the bow, that’s one aimed right at the bridge. The political fallout of such a move could have grave consequences for many more people than just Hillary Clinton.

Something has to break. Clinton is as much of a liar as Obama and everyone knows it. While her followers are willing to overlook that, few others are. Hillary could never be guaranteed the support of Congress, except if the Democrats kept walking in lockstep out of political correctness.

But that’s already starting to break. Former Democrat presidential candidate, Jim Webb has said that there is no way that he will vote for Clinton. He’s even gone so far as to say that he’s looking seriously at Donald Trump and thinking about voting for him.

While Webb is only one vote, the fact that he was a presidential candidate until just a short while ago, means that his refusal to endorse Hillary and possible vote for Trump could easily serve as a wake-up call to the entire Democrat party.

How To Survive A Wildfire

BIG Wildfire

A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire often occurring in wild land areas, but they can also consume houses and agricultural resources. Wildfires can be life-threatening, especially if you are caught in the fire while trapped in a vehicle and you panic.

How to Survive a Wildfire When Trapped in a Vehicle

You must avoid being caught in a vehicle because a car offers no protection from radiant heat. Think of how fast a covered pot of water reaches a boil, and you will have some idea about why cars are not a safe place to be during a fire.

It is to be used only in emergency if you are caught in the fire with absolutely no other alternative. While it may be safer than trying to out run the fire on foot, the risk is still very high that you will be badly burned or killed inside the vehicle. If it is a grass fire you might be ok, but if it is an infernal like fire, your chances of survival are slim at the best.

If you must flee from the fire from your home or place of work use that time to be ahead of the fire so that you won’t be caught by it while driving. If it all possible make the decision to stay or leave well in advance of being forced to make the choice.

If you can shelter in your home or a building, it is better to do that than staying in your car.

If you have no choice but to remain with your car during a fire front, do the following in order to survive:

  • Roll up all of the car windows and close all the air vents.
  • Put the air conditioning on re-circulation.
  • Leave the engine running even when you stop.
  • Don’t worry about the gas tank. Vehicles with metal gas tank rarely explode. You are much safer staying inside the car that you would be on foot if the fire is that bad.

If your vehicle is still capable of  moving, then drive very slowly and very carefully.

  • Keep your headlights and hazard lights on since visibility will be considerably reduced.
  • Watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians. Collisions and injuries are a major hazard in low visibility. People may be panicking and possibly running onto the road.
  • You must also watch for fleeing livestock and wildlife.
  • Do not be afraid to use your horn if you are worried that people or animals are nearby, but you cannot see them.
  • Do not drive through heavy smoke. If the smoke is too thick to see where you are going it may be safer to park and wait out the fire.
  • Keep the radio on so that you know what direction the fire is heading and where it is focused. Use a compass and other navigation aides so that you can get out of the fire as quickly as possible.

When you stop driving park behind a solid structure if possible. This will help to block radiant heat, which is the killer heat. If you cannot find a solid structure to take the heat, then stop your car in a clear area beside the road or in a similar suitable place.

Be sure that you are nowhere near overhanging trees and branches, near other combustible materials that might catch fire, or anything else that will burn fiercely.

You must get down on the floor as low as possible. Cover up with a woolen blanket or a coat. Under no circumstances do you use synthetic materials because they will melt and cause severe burns. Cover children and reassure them before covering yourself. If you have water, drink it now. If you have enough water to spare pour a little water on a small cloth to breathe through.

If you have only a vehicle to shelter in:

  • When the wildfire front is crossing, do not panic. You must resist the  temptation to get out and make a run for it.
  • Be prepared for the possibility that your car could stall and not restart.
  • Hot air currents may violently rock your car.
  • Expect smoke and sparks to enter your vehicle.
  • The temperature inside your car will increase quickly. This temperature increase may be unbearable and you or others in the car may be at risk of passing out.
  • To help diminish the fear of others in the vehicle you must keep reassuring them that all will be alright soon. Because of the wildfires noise, it may be hard for others within the vehicle to hear you clearly.
  • You must remember that everybody in the car will be scared, and some may go into panic. If anyone panics you will need to calm them down quickly and help them resist the temptation to break out of the car and run for their life.

Once the fire has passed it is time to get out of the car.

  • Immediately attend to children and anyone experiencing stress or shock.
  • If you have a cell phone call for help immediately.
  • If the car is still operational then drive away from the fire to safety. If the car is no longer operational walk away from the fire and seek help.
  • As you walk to safety keep well clear of any burning trees which can drop branches and injure or possibly kill you if they hit you.
  • When you leave your vehicle and there’s nobody around, be sure to leave a note visible in your vehicle telling whomever finds it that you’re alright and which direction you went.

How to Survive a Wildfire on Foot

The most important thing to remember on how to survive a wildfire on foot is to remain calm. This situation is extremely dangerous, but panicking will only hinder your ability to adapt to the situation and survive.

To help keep you calm, breathing techniques are an excellent way to keep your cool. Take a deep breath in for 4 seconds. Then exhale slowly for 4 seconds. Continue to repeat this breathing exercise until you feel more calm and in control.

However, if the air is already smokey you should not take deep breaths. You must remain confident in your ability to escape and survive because your mental condition is a key factor in determining if you will make it through the fire alive or not.

Protecting your airways is the most important thing that you can do to ensure your safety. Even if the fire continues to advance, you still have a chance of escaping if you can breathe. As soon as you begin to inhale smoke and carbon monoxide, there is a strong chance of you passing out and dying. To get the best air, try to stay as low to the ground as possible. Remember to cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth and hold it there until you get to a safer area.

If you have time you must determine three courses of action. If time and your mental condition allow it, try to formulate three different escape plans. Then you can quickly assess each of your options to find the best escape route possible. In the event the situation changes you will need to adjust your plans and you will have two backup plans at your disposal.

Note that the most dangerous places to be in relation to the fire are uphill from the flames and downwind from the fire. Always try to stay upwind of the fire at all times.

It is very important to use the wind as your guide. If the wind is blowing past you and towards the fire then run into the wind. If the wind is behind the fire and blowing towards you run perpendicular to the fire so that you are escaping both the actual flames and the course they will blow towards.  The winds can carry sparks and start many new fires up to one mile ahead of the existing flames. Never allow yourself to become surrounded by fire.

Always head for non-flammable terrain. If it is possible head for the nearest, biggest area that is unlikely to burn. While the fire is probably very large, feeding it still requires combustible materials like trees, brush, and tall grass to burn. Look for nearby areas that are free of trees and brush. If at all possible, try to put a body of water between you and the fire.

Places which have already burned are sometimes the safest places to go. If you go to burned over areas, you should ensure that this area is completely extinguished before proceeding. In these areas, lingering fires can still cause burns and breathing problems.

wildfires

Places to Avoid When Escaping a Wildfire

  • Always avoid hills and other elevated burning areas that could leave you trapped once the fire advances.
  • You must also avoid areas that are choked with a lot of vegetation, because these areas will almost certainly burn.
  • Stay away from canyons, natural chimneys, and ridges. These areas can have very few options if the fire suddenly spreads around you. A canyon could leave you trapped in a dead end.

If the fire surrounds you or if there is no safe place to head to, your safest option is to take refuge in an area that will not burn. An example of this are deep underground caves. If you are able to continue fleeing the fire and heading towards safety you should do so.

If you are near a body of water like a river or a pond seek safety in the water or use it to keep some distance between you and the fire. Fire will not burn across the water unless it is a narrow creek with a lot of overhanging trees.

If you are near a road or ditch but cannot follow the road safety due to the width of the fire, you may be safer using the road as a barrier. The fire will still take time to spread across the pavement even if there are overhanging branches. If you become trapped, lie face down on the pavement as far from the fire as you can get. If there is a ditch on the far side of the road, get in the ditch face down.

If you must stand your ground, try to cover your body with anything that will protect you from the fire. Wet clothing or a wet blanket are very useful. When all else fails cover yourself as much as possible with dirt or mud. This may help to keep you cooler, and hopefully keep your clothes below the kindling point.

No matter what, you must lay down and stay covered until the fire passes. Failure to do this could get you killed. When the fire has passed, you must check over the others in your group for injuries and also check yourself. Next, call for help if anyone is injured. If no one is injured, call friends and family to let then know the situation.

In conclusion wildfires are one the most dangerous forces of nature. They can come out of nowhere at high speed and overtake acres of land in just minutes. The most important thing you can do to protect yourself against wildfires is to have a wildfire plan. This plan should cover all aspects of what to do, how to do it, and just as important, what not to do.

Your wildfire plan should be tested at least 2 times a year to verify that all things are covered and that it works. Also your plan should be checked over by your emergency services in the city or county that you live in. If at all possible you should have these emergency service personnel come and evaluate one of your wildfire drills to see if there is anything else that needs to be covered.

Installing an Off-Grid Water Well

by Sandra O

This is an entry in our non-fiction writing contest

Getting out of the city and choosing to live “out in the country” is a goal of many preppers.  “Homesteading” sounds so idealistic; getting back to the basics and living the dream!  What most don’t realize is homesteading is hard physical work and has a lot of unknowns. It requires a lot of planning, prioritizing, setup money and manual labor.  You need shelter, water and food and lots of common sense.

When I bought my homestead (see previous article on buying a country property), it had the basics:  a house, a...

Putin Is Pulling Russia Out Of The Syrian War

Russian jetsIn a sudden and surprising move, President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will be pulling their troops out of the five-year-old Syrian civil war.

In a move that supposedly has Assad’s approval, Russian troops will be pulled back to a seaport and airbase in the Syrian province of Latakia. This effectively removes them from the war, while keeping the troops available should they be needed yet again.

To understand this move, it is necessary to first understand that Russia never entered the war as part of the United States led coalition. Rather, Putin sent troops to Syria in support of President Assad, who Russia supports as an ally and client state. In contrast, President Obama severely dislikes Assad and would like nothing more than to see him out of office. His efforts in the war have not been to support Assad, but rather to contain terrorist elements in the region.

Putin states that Russia has achieved their goals in the war, in bringing Assad’s administration and rebel forces together at the bargaining table in Geneva. The talks in Geneva are anything but amicable, with the UN mediator, Staffan de Mistura, keeping the rival factions separated and working with each of them individually. Nevertheless, there is hope that these talks will be successful. Mistura has already publicly stated that there is no Plan B. The talks must succeed or the sides will go back to fighting.

Should that happen, the fighting will probably be worse than before, with greater violence and greater casualties, especially amongst civilians. A quarter of a million civilians have already lost their lives in this conflict, which has also sparked mass migration to Europe and the United States.

Whether the peace talks are in process, it’s questionable how much hope for peace there truly is. The two sides have arrived at Geneva with totally opposite positions. While that is to be expected in any such negotiations, the differences between them seem irreconcilable. Rebel forces demand that Assad relinquish all power as a starting point, with a temporary governing body with full executive power appointed to see through a transition to a new government. Assad and his government are clearly opposed to considering that idea.

What About ISIS?

While the work going on at the bargaining table coincides with a month old cease-fire, it is important to note that ISIS is not part of the discussions, nor part of the cease-fire. So, warfare continues in Syria and the Middle East. However, Russia’s actions in the war were never focused on ISIS in particular, but were aimed at supporting Assad and his administration.

Even so, Russia has probably been the most effective fighter against ISIS, since their entry into the conflict. So, while they may have accomplished their goals, the results are far from satisfactory to other players who are currently in Syria, including many of the Gulf States and the United States.

The big question facing us is what is this going to mean for ISIS? While there have been no specific responses out of their representatives, representatives of other rebel groups have responded favorably to the withdrawal of Russian forces, seeing it as an advantage to them.

It is quite likely, considering the losses that Russian forces have inflicted upon ISIS troops and installations, that they will see the movement of Russian troops in the same light.

According to reports, or perhaps propaganda, coming out of ISIS, they are growing monthly, with new recruits joining them from around the world. If that is truly the case, than any reduction in enemy forces would be seen as a net gain to them.

The removal of Russian troops would mean that they have a greater majority on the battlefield, which should see new victories, as ISIS consolidates their gains and goes on the offensive once again.

It’s important to note that the war against ISIS has been largely ineffective, as Obama’s actions seem more focused on protecting ISIS from serious harm, then bringing out their doom. The American-led coalition is not very strong, and consists mostly of nations who are against ISIS, without taking any active military action against them. Those who are taking action are doing so mostly from the air; but as anyone who knows warfare can tell you, wars are not won from the air, but by the individual soldiers with rifles, who hold that all-important piece of real estate.

With fewer opposing troops on the ground, ISIS can be expected to win new victories. While I can’t fault the fighting zeal of the troops who are actively engaged against them, most are poorly trained and not very well equipped.

Unlike the First and Second Gulf Wars, where American troops crushed Iraqi forces in a lightning-fast attack, this war has taken the character of a slugfest, interspersed with ISIS committing atrocities against their captives.

If anything, this move spells danger for the United States, as well as the many other countries which are considered enemies of ISIS. Even more so than that, it spells danger for the Kurds and others on the ground, who are fighting ISIS daily. The lack of Russia’s support for the war will free up ISIS troops, which can then be used to widen the war or can be sent out as terrorists to attack civilian populations.

Video first seen on MSNBC

How This Translates to US

I would expect to see an upturn in terrorist incidents in Europe and the United States, as ISIS renews their supremacy in the area. Their goals have not changed one iota and they are not part of the current peace talks. Therefore, they will only see the removal of Russian troops from the field of battle as an opportunity, which they will be quick to take advantage of.

We already know that ISIS has troops here in the United States, as well as in many European countries. The Paris attack was led and coordinated by ISIS terrorists, showing that ISIS has successfully infiltrated both France and Belgium.

It’s hard to say with surety how many other European countries have been infiltrated, but considering the massive swell of migration from Syria to Europe, chances are high that ISIS has cells in all of the European countries.

These terrorists have mostly gone underground, awaiting the right moment to strike. It is hard to say whether they will see the withdraw of Russia as that moment, but you can be sure that there are discussions ongoing at the highest levels of ISIS command, with the goal of determining whether this is their moment or not.

Our porous southern border has already been used on more than one occasion by ISIS; with ISIS soldiers having been caught crossing into McAllen, Texas. If ten were caught, then you can be sure that many more made it through. They are living amongst us, probably actively making plans and seeking opportunities which they can turn to their advantage.

Considering all this, it appears that the peace talks in Geneva are somewhat immaterial. Whether they succeed or fail may affect Assad, his government and the people of his country; but they will do nothing to stop or even slow the growth of the Islamic State. If anything, they will give ISIS a new opening for further attacks to gain more territory.

I see little hope in these talks; or rather, I see them as an irrelevancy. While the Russian bear may have accomplished its goals, those goals don’t fit with the needs of the world. Perhaps, that is part of Putin’s plans as well.

We must remember that Putin has rekindled Russian imperialism, along with the desire to conquer new lands and bring them under the sway of Moscow. He is smart enough and has enough

foresight to know that letting the fight continue with ISIS, while not taking any part, weakens his opposition, putting him and his country in a better position to ultimately come out on top. His actions to date have shown that he is not as concerned with helping the world, as he is in helping his own country achieve her goals.

In this, Putin’s strength and Obama’s weakness on the world stage give the Russian leader a distinct advantage. He is able to manipulate the circumstances, knowing that he can count on Obama for a lot of noise, but little else.

Strictly strategically speaking, this withdrawal could put him in a position where the world is not clamoring for American intervention, but Russian intervention. Should that happen, he will have gained something that none of his predecessors were able to accomplish, a position of leadership in the world, which is second to none.

Too bad we don’t have a true leader in the White House, who could take advantage of this situation, instead of using the military as his personal social experiment. If there was ever a time in the last 50 years when we needed a strong military, ready to deploy and defeat our country’s enemies, it is now. But we can no longer count on that happening; not while Obama is in office.

10 Trees A Prepper Needs For Food And Health

Apple treeAs with plants, guns, food types, and fuel types, there is no such thing as a single tree that can be used for all your needs.

While some may be “multi-purpose”, it still make sense to plan on having multiple types of trees on your homestead, or any other place where you can find room to plant and maintain them.

You already know what types of trees we recommend for defense and protection, and also for woodworking and firewood. The question is, what would you grow for food? Read the following article and you’ll find our answer.

Food Bearing Trees

Apples

Aside from producing edible fruit, apple trees also have some medicinal properties.

For example, the bark can be used to stop diarrhea and break fevers, while stewed apples can be used for constipation. In addition, as much as you may love the taste of fresh baked apples in the form of pie, baked apples can also be used to ease throat pain, and break a fever.

Finally, if you love apple cider, then you will also have a delightful answer to harmful bacteria overgrowth in the intestines.

Considering the potential decrease in water quality and food safety that will occur in a major crisis scenario, apple cider may truly be as important as a medicine as it is an edible food. And remember you can also use the peels for purifying water.

apple

Pears

They produce an abundance of delicious fruits, but you can also use their wood for carving, kitchen utensils, and smoking meat.

Pear wood is very resistant to rot and warping, so it will last for years if properly taken care of. Many people prefer using pear wood for musical instruments because it will not warp and also tends to produce a pleasing sound.

And even though pears are not listed as having major nutritional value, they do contain pectin. This particular compound can be used to manage both constipation and diarrhea as well as nausea. Pectin is also gaining some attention for use against cancer and can also help curb appetite for weight loss.

pear

Nut Trees

No matter where you live, there are bound to be some edible nut trees that will grow well in your area. If you choose carefully, you may be able to get dying agents for fabrics and inks as well as wood for furniture and burning.

Different nut trees may also have an endless number of medicinal properties. When choosing nut trees, try to find ones that produce nuts with as much protein as possible.

At the very least, even if there are no safe animals or fish to eat in a post crisis world, you can still get enough protein from nut trees. You can, and should also learn how to make nut milk and paste so that you can expand your menu choices as much as possible.

Citrus Trees

They do produce nutrient packed fruit, but almost all citrus trees have thorns, so they make good perimeter defense trees during the early years of their growth. Even if you live in a cold climate, it may be of use to keep at least a few different kinds of citrus trees growing in tubs for the sake of both food and medicinal purposes.

For example:

  • Fresh lemon juice is a well known cure for many ailments, including helping to prevent infection in skin wounds. It is also a powerful antibacterial cleansing agent for around the house. Leaves and bark from lemon trees also have medicinal properties. There are a number of ways to use lemon to treat high blood pressure, and also liver cleansing and also to help stop vomiting.
  • Even though lime trees are credited with helping prevent scurvy, oranges and lemons can also be of use.
  • Oranges, leaves, and other parts of the tree can be used to fight cancer, act as a mild diuretic, improve skin health, and act as a laxative. Nutrition wise, oranges are also very important because they contain a good bit of potassium.
  • When properly prepared as an infusion, lime flowers can also be used to treat anxiety and stress. As with other citrus trees, limes are rich in anti-oxidants and other nutrients that are important for good health.

oranges

Cherry Tree

You can use cherries to make wine, jelly, jam, pies, and fresh off the tree snacks, while cherry tree wood is also well known for its uses in furniture and building.

Medicinally speaking, cherries are also well known for treating gout. Depending on the species (mainly North American wild cherry trees), you can also use the bark/root bark as a sedative and to stop a non-productive cough.

cherries

As you can see even trees that you would normally grow for nutritional purposes have medicinal properties. That’s because nature works in wonderful ways and learning how to use its resources it’s such an important skill to have when SHTF. So now let’s take a look at some trees that you should grow mainly for their medicinal uses.

Medicinal Trees

Alder

It can be used to cleanse both surface and deep wounds, while tea made from the bark and leaf can also be used for hemorrhoids and to break fevers. Some red alder species also have components that can be used to treat tuberculosis and some forms of cancer.

In addition, Alder is a well known anti-inflammatory. When choosing an alder species, you can also look for ones that have edible catkins. While these catkins may be bitter, they contain a good bit of protein.

Alder trees are nitrogen fixing in manner similar to beans. They should be a part of every homestead and tree orchard because they can improve the nitrogen levels and quality of any soil. In addition, if you are unable to make compost or have poor soil for the garden, you may want to try using some soil from around an older, well established alder tree and using it as a quick fix.

Alternatively, if you are interested in natural or woods based gardens, simply plant shade loving vegetables near an alder tree. Rest assured they will have plenty of nitrogen and other nutrients to meet their needs.

alder

Beech

If you live in an area with freezing temperatures, beech tree bark can be used to treat frostbite. The leaves can also be made into a poultice to treat burns, or they can be used as an edible food element in salads. Beech wood is also well known for its usage in furniture and firewood. Beech nuts are also edible and can provide both fat and oil that may be more difficult to obtain from other plant based sources

Beech wood is often used for gun stocks. Therefore, if you plan to have guns in a post crisis world, this tree can be very important to you, especially if you plan to barter gun stocks or other materials in exchange for other items of interest to you.

beech tree

Birch

Even though you may think of birch as a tree used primarily for its wood, this tree also has a number of important medicinal properties. In particular, birch teas can be used for a variety of mouth sores, and this is very important because when you are on the run or do not have access to enough water to clean dishes and food utensils, rest assured mouth infections can and will occur. There is also some newer research indicating that sap from the beach tree can be used to fight cancer and reduce tumors.

birch

Elm

If there is one tree that can almost serve as a “medicine chest in a bottle”, elm trees make an excellent choice. You can make a poultice from the bark to treat gunshot wounds, and also other deep wounds. Elm bark tea is good for bone health because it contains a good bit of calcium.

It is known to help speed up healing of broken bones and also as a preventative for diarrhea. Elm can also be useful for treating a range of bladder and intestinal problems.

Aside from that, elm is also well known for its use as a firewood. While elm has many excellent properties, bear in mind that it is also susceptible to a number of diseases. Make sure that you are well versed in tree culturing and care before trying to add this tree to your orchard.

ulmus-minor

Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)

Even though this tree is native to Australia, it is very hearty and can grow just about anywhere. This tree is also well known as a “medicine bottle” in a tree, and has been used by both Australian aborigines and others living in this country. The oil from tea trees can be used to get rid of just about any infection. When properly diluted, it can be used to get rid of gum abscesses and other mouth infections.

It can also be used to treat skin wounds prevent worsening of skin infections. If you inhale the scent from crushed tea tree leaves, the oils will help get rid of colds and other respiratory infections.

Since tea trees are a member of the eucalyptus family, do not forget that excess inhaling or prolonged exposure to eucalyptus may lead to collapsed lungs. It is very important to note that tea tree oil and other elements are poisonous if taken in large quantities. Therefore, if you are going to make tea tree oil or use it for medical needs, make sure that you know what you are doing.
