Choosing a Scope for Your Ruger 10/22

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editors Note: An article from Eric Patton to The Prepper Journal. One of the most versatile of all varmint guns, one that will keep your freezer full of small game, every prepper should look into the Ruger 10/22 as the cost is minimal to both buy and shoot. As always, if you have information for Preppers that you would like to share then enter into the Prepper Writing Contest with a chance to win one of three Amazon Gift Cards with the top prize being a $300 card to purchase your own prepping supplies!

The 10/22 is easily one of the most prolific firearms on the planet with over 5 million made since their introduction in the 1960’s. When it comes to a semi-auto .22 rifle, there are none better. They are reliable, functional, light weight, and have reasonably good accuracy. Good enough that topping off your 10/22 with a quality scope can make a mean little rifle for plinking and small varmint hunting.

That more or less covers what the 10/22 is but let’s quickly cover what the 10/22 isn’t. This is not a match .22 and won’t come close to that level of accuracy. At best, you can probably expect about 1.5 MOA at 50 yards, quickly decreasing as the light weight .22 round loses speed. Given this limitation, it’s easy to end up with more scope that what your 10/22 really needs.

Considering the cost all of the possible features you could get on a scope, making a choice is a complicated task and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. This article attempts to cover some general guidelines to get you in the ballpark but a little extra homework won’t hurt.

Scope Selection

When it comes to choosing the best scope for your Ruger 10/22, there are two schools of thought on appropriate scopes. You can go with a very simple scope for short range varmint hunting or go big with a more powerful optic to shoot smaller targets. The truth is that both work well in their own niche. Once you have decided what purpose your rifle should serve, you can make an informed decision on what is an appropriate rifle scope would be for you.

Considerations for Magnification

The power of a scope is the defining line between the two schools of thought. The first group will go with low powered optics, generally less than 8x, which complement the expected accuracy of a 10/22. The other prefer scopes that are much more powerful, sometimes as high as 20x. This is not so much for shooting longer ranges but for shooting smaller targets at close range.

While I have used scopes as low as 4x for squirrel and varmint hunting and scopes as high as 24x for plinking, the truth is that somewhere in the middle works out very well for most people’s needs. I prefer anywhere from a 9x to maybe as high as a 14x or 16x but anything more than that is wasted. Your rifle simply can’t keep up with scopes in the 20x range if it is a stock 10/22 setup.

Rimfire Specific Scopes

While there is no reason not to use a scope designed for rimfire rifles, they offer nothing extra over a scope made for larger caliber rifles. Most companies produce a decent scope that is rimfire specific but some companies use the lower recoil to build a scope with sub-par durability.

While I won’t advice staying away from rimfire specific scopes all together, you are best to walk away from any of them that are not made by a reputable optics manufacturer.

BDC Reticles and Turret Adjustments

Most distance shooters with high power rifles use scopes designed for that purpose with reticles and turrets to help compensate for wind effects and bullet drop. These features are definitely something that adds to the overall cost of a scope.

Though I do use a turret scope on one .22 rifle, I do not on a 10/22 because there is zero reason. You don’t have enough accuracy to make turrets worth it when you aren’t going to be accurate at ranges requiring more than just a couple of clicks of adjustment.

On the other hand, I find a reticle with some form of BDC markings to be very useful in a .22. Even at 50 yards, a .22 can drop as much as three inches and that gets exponentially worse as the bullet travels further. Having some way to compensate for drop of around 24” at 150 yards is a good plan even if you aren’t going to be pin point accurate at that range.

With the moderate range and recoil of a 10/22, there is really no wrong choice for a scope as long as you get one that is of reasonable quality but why get an inferior product. Without a doubt, the 10/22 is an amazing rifle and should be paired with a comparable optic. If neither of the above appeal to you, there are a number of other scopes that work well.

This article did not go into the world of red dot sights which serve a very different purpose than a scope. There is some overlap between the two but a red dot will not be able to do what a scope does. When you boil their use down to the simplest terms, a scope makes you more accurate while a red dot makes you faster. Both are viable options but don’t make the mistake of buying a red dot thinking you are going to get the same ranged accuracy out of it as a good scope.

Things College Students Should Know in Emergency Situations

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editors Note: An article from Jeff Blaylock to The Prepper Journal. Good advice for everyone, not just college students. The overall theme is one familiar to most preppers, don’t panic and know what you are doing. As always, if you have information for Preppers that you would like to share then enter into the Prepper Writing Contest with a chance to win one of three Amazon Gift Cards with the top prize being a $300 card to purchase your own prepping supplies!

Emergency situations can happen anywhere to anyone. This is why people devote so much attention to planning to deal with them, look for ways to avoid them, and set in place rules and procedures to save themselves and others – to think consciously in case of such things.

In colleges, people talk and write about it. So, do not be surprised if you get an assignment to write an essay or research paper on the topic “How to act in an emergency?”. You may think that you know everything or you have more interesting things to do than writing about it and think, “That will be great if other people do my research paper or essay instead of me!”

That would be easier. But if you do some research on this topic and write about it yourself, you will remember all the info and become aware of how to act in emergencies.

What Do You Have to Know?

No matter where you are, you cannot be 100% sure that nothing will happen to you. You do not have to be scared constantly, just be situation aware. Know your surroundings, know your paths of entry and exit from any structure, note where standard safety equipment is stored – first aid kits, Hazmat kits, fire extinguishers, fire alarms and the like. In a college environment you will have a routine and it only takes a few conscious observations in the first weeks there to know generally where all these things are. The point is you simply have to be prepared for emergency situations by knowing your surroundings.

Let’s review how to act in these different situations and how to survive, to simply get yourself safe.

Stay Calm

Unfortunately, often risk is increased exponentially when panic is the first reaction. This is when people commit rash actions, which lead to injuries and even their death because they panic. You, like other students on campus, need to know what you will do next and what steps you will take. However, time to make a complete and through analysis of your situation in a real emergency is a luxury you simply do not have, a delay in a dangerous situation increases the threat that and could result in serious consequences. From an earthquake to fire or explosion to an active shooter, not panicking with be your first right step. Of course seek cover or escape immediately, but knowing your are running from danger as opposed to towards it in such situations take a very quick assessment of the situation. You will be surprised at yourself if you have thought this through while becoming familiar with you new surroundings.

Try to Leave a Dangerous Place

It is important to remember that if you are not a specialist (a rescuer or a doctor), you do not need to try to help professionals until the danger has passed. This only aggravates the situation, and you can get hurt. Be a friend to yourself and trust those people who know what they are doing and try to get out of the building as fast as possible.

In the Case of Natural or Man-Made Emergencies, Never Use an Elevator

In such situations, electricity, as a rule, is lost. Imagine yourself in two situations:

  • Electricity is out when you only got to the elevator, you will not even be able to get inside of it
  • Electricity is lost when you are already inside the elevator. This option is worse, because you get stuck inside of it, and what happens to it happens to you. In the best case scenario, you will have to wait until everything is over and electricity is back on. In the worst case scenario, the consequences can be tragic.

Avoid elevators in an emergency situation!

Do Not Take Anything Superfluous

Keep documents and valuables in one place. This will be necessary in case of an emergency because this way you can immediately collect them all and leave the building, assuming you are there when the emergency occurs. If you are not do NOT make grabbing them your plan intil the emergency is over and it is safe. Of course, you can count on the college having a safety policy and procedures in place, know it and follow it. If you do something that disturbs the process of your being rescued, the consequences can be tragic. There are few things in life that are not replaceable, especially in a dorm room or classroom, other than yourself.

Do Not Overload Communication Lines

Try to use the phone only in case of an emergency, and only if you are going to call emergency services. In a college environment know that if the emergency is dire enough then the emergency personnel are already being overloaded with calls. When you are safe call one person you trust to tell them you are safe and task that person with getting the word out, by other calls, texting, social media, whatever.

Do Not Provide First Aid If You Are Not Trained in First Aid

It is not recommended to provide first aid to the wounded/victims if you have not received special training and are not sure of your strengths and knowledge. The site of blood, broken limbs, missing limbs and the bodies of the dead are not something every person can deal with and you don’t want to interdict those who can. The main thing in this situation is to use the simple rule – “Do No Harm.”

Provide First Aid If You Are Both Trained and Prepared

If you have received special training and are sure of your knowledge and your strength, then you can and should render aid to an injured person when the situation had de-escalated and you are no longer in danger of still being injured. For that, besides training, knowledge, and strength, you also must have the presence of mind, calmness and confidence in what you are doing. Fear and hesitancy are not what is called for in this situation.

When It Is Fire, Know What to Do

If you were sitting, listening to lessons and suddenly a fire breaks out, you have not panic and get out of the building as quickly as you can. However, if escape is not an option (high upper floor and fire below, no fire escape, your hallway burning) you again have to NOT panic. If there is a source of water in the room (sink, toilet, bottled water or energy drinks) wet some cloths (blankets, drapes, your coats or other removable garment) and seal the door with them to try and control the toxic gases from a fire. Never forget that your bladder, everyone’s bladder is an emergency source of liquid in this case. A wet cloth, held to your nose, will make breathing easier, unless it is from that last-resort liquid source. Signal for help as best you can through window, pounding on the door, dialing 911, blowing a whistle (something everyone should have on their key chain) and, of course, yelling.

Try to Calm Down Others

If you managed to calm yourself down, try to do that to others. It happens, when people cannot handle their fear and start crying, yelling and panicing, they are only making the situation worse for everyone else. Try to make them calm. If you can maintain, calm your own first reactions, it is worth trying with them too.

When It Is an Earthquake…

If you were on campus and started feeling an earthquake, do not panic, seek cover. Extinguish any open flames and stay away from overhanging balconies, cornices, parapets, beware of dangling wires.

During the Earthquake, Find a Protected Safe

Under sturdy furniture is option number one, against a load-bearing wall is option number two. If your eventual escape route has a door, prop it open with something as any shaking of the structure can cause a door to become inoperable due to the structural damage caused by the tremor. Hiding under furniture will offer some protection from falling objects and debris. Stay away from windows and heavy furniture that may fall, like bookshelves.

One Unnatural Disaster – Confronted with Someone Who Wants to Commit Suicide

It is an emergency and instantaneously you are in the middle of it. And sadly this is something teenagers face more as a segment of the population and colleges are full of teenagers, few of whom handle stress well in the first place, and some of whom who don’t, period, and this is a problem. There are the standard steps – How to help a friend who is suicidal, and it is worth knowing as you may be faced with such a situation. Again, try not to panic and try and remain calm, speak is as monotone a voice as possible, not labored, but not displaying any panic on your side. Try to calm the person down by words, try to draw out the conversation and get them to talk. Do not approach the person especially if they have already put themselves in a dangerous position. If you have a cell phone calmly dial 911 with the phone at your side and leave it there. Emergency services can hear your conversation and they can find you, especially on a college campus. Stall for emergency service to arrive and let them do their job.

Only in the movies do friends talk their friends down and they are cured. This is a CRY for Help, so do the right thing and get them help.

Do Not Set Yourself Up on the Bad

Please don’t get too wound up in the what if’s. Think about preparing for them, knowing not to panic, knowing to react quickly without over reacting and go on loving life and being confident in your moves. Remember, you are what you think!

All these situations can happen to students on campus, to kids in schools, to adults at home, to any person anywhere. We, the people, are considered the smartest of beings so lets live up to it.

Just exactly How student can write a calculated and graphical term paper

Just exactly How student can write a calculated and graphical term paper

Term paper for the pupil is a fundamental element of learning and gaining and knowledge that is consolidating. Having said that, also you any good, it is still compulsory to perform if you think that such work will not do. Whenever a pupil writes a term paper, he then accumulates the essential important things which can be experience, along with abilities of processing and retrieval of this information. The pupil analyzes his research work and therefore gets the necessary data. More over, the definition of paper becomes a way that is excellent measure the knowledge gained during training.

Even though the dwelling of every term work, irrespective of control, is actually exactly the same, all of them comes with a character that is individual. It completely covers information that is certain the precise topics considered in the program. But particularly, term paper combines concept with repetition in moderate proportions.

Information on a calculated and graphical term paper

Today, we are going to speak about an independent kind of term paper called a calculated and graphical term paper. Such variety of term work should include such knowledge as a totally performed analyst that is theoretical. an explanatory note is enclosed into the course type, where most of the subtleties and facets of the calculation and visual manipulation are explained step by step. The objective of this ongoing work is to investigate the definition of paper with regards to technical knowledge, which means, it may be unequivocally figured such course work is mainly decided by practical values. If you give a tiny contrast, then suppose your term paper by volume is certainly not significantly less than 20 sheets, perhaps not counting more information – conclusions, content and so on. Therefore, the calculation and graphical work for the training will occupy about 60-70% the amount of the study that is whole.

What types of term documents we all know

As well as this particular term paper, there are additionally a study variation and a version that is reporting of program.

  1. Scientific research paper is recognized as the most assignments that are difficult a student. At the phase of their development, such as the number of resources, the pupil should attempt to perform specific tasks and procedures: apply the info obtained in practice and discover their own subjects for analytics. Frequently such tasks are written from the effort associated with pupils on their own.
  2. The reporting term paper will not fit in with the group of complex projects. All things are clear and understandable. The task that is main of task is always to summarize the study, namely, the planning of http://www.essaywriters.us a written report. The report may be presented in a variety of kinds. This is certain information about an analytical or questionnaire study. Additionally, into the reporting term paper, the learning pupil shows just what knowledge he had been granted after finishing this course. The reporting term paper is written after the student has completed the practice in a certain enterprise as a rule. A full-fledged report on the practice is compiled if the goal of the practice is a specific compiled material that most widely represents the student’s activity. However in all the situations the reporting term paper is created.
  3. We understand yet another style of term paper, which will be complex. This sort of work is written on several subject matter, rendering it specially unique. However these areas needs to be adjacent in meaning. For instance, maybe it’s psychology and pedagogy, law and jurisprudence, and so forth.

Part of the students are up against a number of tasks, which within their specificity may differ from each other. At that time you cannot decide what kind of term paper decide for writing. As being a guideline, the design of the study is created as a result of its writing, but still, if you at first understand what forms of term documents occur, it’ll be easier to construct your idea of competent work compilation. For example, students of physics characteristics “Solid State Physics”, “Theoretical Physics”, “Applied Gas Dynamics”, face the implementation of a determined and term paper that is graphical. These works are more characteristic of engineering or technical specialties.

Humanities and therapy are more at risk of clinical research. Consequently, they even compose comparable design term documents.

A Robust, Redundant Escape Plan Starts Today

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editors Note: An article from Dave Henly to The Prepper Journal. Reality if you really want to get off the grid. As always, if you have information for Preppers that you would like to share then enter into the Prepper Writing Contest with a chance to win one of three Amazon Gift Cards with the top prize being a $300 card to purchase your own prepping supplies!

“The Next Three Days” is a nail-biting movie. It is one of the only movies that I have had to pause and take a break before the end of the film. It was so intense. In it, Russell Crowe is rescuing his wife (Elizabeth Banks) from wrongful imprisonment. I doubt that I would ever have the guts to fight for my family in this manner.

But it does make me think: “Am I too trusting? What would I need to do if (fill in the blank) happened and my family and I needed to run?”

I already practice my survivalist skills on a regular basis. My friends and I often do survival hunts where we hike into the woods and live for 2-3 days off of roots and the creatures we kill. There are few groups (outside of military men) as prepared as my friends and I when it comes to wilderness training. Being able to “go on the run” from an invading country or a personal threat needs some forethought.

Recently, I’ve been prepping my go-to-ground strategy. How could I stay off the grid and go “dark.” I won’t share everything, but here are a few thoughts that I am working through.

Erasing My Online Footprint

This one is the hardest for me. I use the internet to keep track of my friend’s and families’ lives. Granted, the cynic will say “the government already knows everything about me.” But the truth is, they haven’t carefully organized that information until you become a person of interest. Deleting your entire footprints such as images your friends put up, old photos you stored on Picasa (which has been purchased by Google and now they know everything) or Amazon Photos and your old blogs, takes a lot of dedication.

There are no guarantees that it will help, but if there is no digital footprint, you will be harder to trace. It makes it harder for them to find you. If you own a home, it will be difficult to hide your address and be removed from every online database. However, if you are persistent in your removal requests — and you don’t opt-in to email addresses and and other requests for information you will create less to be deleted should the need arise.

Create a Fake Online Persona

Creating a fake online persona is getting easier to do. The first thing is to get a prepaid cell phone number so that you can sign up for email and social media accounts if needed. Then, you can tag photos of your face with this fake name — or hire a photographer on Upwork to take pictures of a model for you. These custom photos won’t flag as being “stock images” and will serve as the persona for your account.

Finally, you need an address. A fake address from fakenamegenerator.com will work. Enter this name and address in as many sweepstakes as you can find. Applying for sweepstakes will help establish your phony persona in Lexis Nexis as a “real” entity. There is nothing illegal about using a pseudonym and fake address for an added layer of anonymity.

Ditch The Smart Phone

Smartphones track everything. We’re pretty sure they listen to everything as well. The smartphone, smart TV and any other “smart” device need to be unceremoniously removed from the house. Ditching the smart devices will help to hide your daily routine and keep you “off the grid.”

Mask Your IP

Your phone is traceable. Your car with the tire pressure sensors? Yeah, those use Bluetooth. They also communicate with the signboards around your town that tell you how far it is to the next road. (You know what I am talking about? The signs that give you travel estimates?) You’ll need to ditch the car.

The challenging thing is that most of our numbers, credit cards and way of life requires digital access. Pay attention to your life and consider what it would take to function without that technology. And then, starting now, you want to begin eliminating everything digital that you can: your laptop, your social media, your smartphone.

Right now, you are leaving a footprint that could be used years later. Little hints, like the sites you frequent and how frequently you go to them. All of those things are being logged in case they need that information in the future. Kept under the guise of “tailoring the user experience”, increasing Google Analytics by more targeted advertising based on a users preferences.

Minimize that Footprint. Go Amish.

You will likely still need internet access, so using something like a TOR browser and a VPN can help you create layers between you and the rest of the world. Many websites — such as CNN and Facebook — track your IP. Once your IP has been identified, your natural browsing habits can be used to unmask your other, cloaked, “identities”.

Keeping a low profile is key. There is little to be gained by pontificating online about politics or our favorite survival secrets. Remember that the things we share online today are likely being recorded and will still be accessible 50 years into the future as part of our digital record.

Go Cash

This goes without saying, but cash is about the only thing you can use that is untraceable. Or, mostly untraceable. It wouldn’t hurt to get a side-hustle, now, that pays in cash. That way you can get used to working in cash-only.

You can keep your day job for now, but you’ll have the skill on how to find and retain cash-generating jobs down the road, which will be essential if you end up in a post-apocalyptic scenario.

Prep Alternate Transport

If the crap hits the fan (SHTF) and the country gets overrun by commies or something, you’ll likely want a vehicle — any vehicle — that can get you south of the border. Running is one of my favorite sports. I get up, put my shoes on, and take off running. Every morning. Like clockwork. It’s the one way that I can guarantee myself a baseline of fitness.

At a minimum, you should be able to run 3 miles non-stop. Walking 4 miles per hour is another excellent skill to practice as a long-distance strategy. Now, if someone did not know about my running habit, I could move pretty quickly in that first 5 miles or so. This gives me a major head-start on getting out of an area, even if I have been reduced to moving by foot. The next level of escape might be a bicycle. I only ride about once a week, but I find that my cardiovascular conditioning translates well into cycling.

Leaving a cheap bike chained up at work or a nearby apartment complex can be a great way to create an “escape” route, should the car no longer be a feasible option. Mountain bikes — while slower in the urban environment — are an excellent choice for their robust off-road handling.  You can get cheap bikes from pawn shops or buy something online from a store like Dave’s Cheap Bikes.

This creates a scenario where I could outrun my aggressors to one of several bikes inside my 2-mile “escape radius”. From there, I can grab one of my bikes, and pick up my escape pace.

Create Cache’s

This is a major step in my escape plan. Remember to not bring along any cellular devices when hiding your cache (no trace!). My caches are cash-rich and well-hidden, deep in the wilderness. You’d need a GPS and exact coordinates to find them.

You might add disguises and some power bars in your cache. 6,000 calories would be the minimum I’d put in there. Backup cell phones and bad weather gear are also essential. I also keep some backup inner tubes and CO2 inflators in case my bike has experienced a flat.

There are two caches within a 10-mile radius of my place. These are smaller, and designed to assist me should I be escaping by bike. Then, there are larger caches at the 50, 200, 350 and 500-mile distances from my location.

This creates a logical path for me to “leap-frog” out of town. Ideally, I would be able to purchase a car for my getaway (or hitchhike), but, even if forced to pedal, I could theoretically get from one cache to the next within about 20 hours. Bicycles are powerful escape vehicles. Even when out of shape, it is fairly easy to maintain 8-10 miles per hour. In a week’s time, that could move you 2-3 states away from the folks that want your capture.

Hide Rural

Cameras are everywhere, and Amazon is selling facial recognition technology to the cops, which makes it almost impossible to hide in the urban environment. Living rural is hard. You can’t dumpster dive for what you need, and you risk everyone learning your name. It requires some solid survivalist skills. However, rural hideouts have a good track record. Folks have had success hiding on the Appalachian trail and in communes.

Finding an abandoned farm that you can squat in that isn’t too far from a McDonald’s or Panera’s dumpster that you can dive in would be an ideal plan. Or integrating with a religious sect that is fearful of outsiders. Once you gain their trust, it can give autonomy and community. Heading out west where you can work the crops with the other illegal immigrants and migrant workers can provide you with a source of cash as well as some camaraderie.

Prepare To Be Lonely

If it is just you escaping you can say goodbye to your wife, your kids and anyone you love for at least the next seven years. Ideally, you will want them to declare you to be dead. The authorities — including a scenario of invading authorities — know that heartstrings are the hardest thing to cut. They will be watching those channels for you to surface. You’ve got to let your trail stay cold if you want your freedom.

Hope To Never Need Your Escape Plan

As you prep your escape plan, it is easy to see all of the holes. Ideally, you will never be in a scenario where you need it. But if things ever do go south, a robust plan gives you the ability to take off at a run, and scale yourself into a defensible position that gives you a fighting chance.

As preppers we take that extra step to be physically secure in our lives, to be prepared as possible for things like last weeks hurricane, other natural disasters, political upheaval and even governments constant infringement on our rights in the name of a false sense of security. We plan for the worse and hope for the best.  In doing such there is an area of planning that is just as valuable as the physical things we seem to focus all of our attention on, and that is the fiscal/financial side of life. Learning early how to manage you money is invaluable. No matter if you are a tradesman or a doctor, managing money is a required life skill in order to survive.

Personal Finance Skills You Should Learn While You’re Young

Money shouldn’t really be something that you’re thinking too much about when you’re still a teenager or a college student. However, once you find yourself looking for employment in the real world, then it’s time to really start thinking about how you’re going to handle your finances going forward.

Things could get very messy for you if you don’t take charge of your money as soon as you start earning it. A lot of young people are sadly not that familiar with the financial world. So if you educate yourself on these things as early as possible, you could save yourself an awful lot of hassle long-term.

Here’s five personal finance skills that you can get a handle on early that will help you your entire life.

Budgeting

This is probably the most important skill for anyone who’s about to start earning money and is unfortunately something that a lot of people think is unnecessary. What you should do when setting up a budget for yourself, is make sure that you are as thorough and as detailed as possible. Make sure that you factor in all of the money that you’re earning, from every source of income, and where all of this money is going.

It’s not that hard to overspend on things. Sometimes stuff comes up that you weren’t expecting and you’ll often find yourself making decisions without thinking about the consequences. The first step is to make an extensive list of both your expenses and your income per month and then consider anything else that you are likely to spend on.

This of course includes having some money every month that you can spend at your leisure. Just make sure to practice self-discipline with this particular aspect of your budget. This is just a start, there’s a lot more to it. You also have to think about things like unexpected expenses which can and will come up for any of us. It would be well-worth downloading a budgeting app. There’s some great ones which can be very helpful in keeping track of what you’ve got planned for yourself. Sticking to a strict budget will ensure that you don’t make many stupid mistakes with your cash and will lay the foundation for financial stability.

Continuous Investments

If you want to get yourself into the best financial shape possible, you should definitely start taking out some investments. Once your budget is set out and you’ve made the decision to stick to it, you should take anything that is left over and find some stocks to invest in, or look into commodities or real estate. The idea behind this is that if you invest a small amount of money every month over a long period it will lead to some big returns in the future. But buyer beware, this is gambling in reality so it is best approached as a sterile analysis of what investments will grow and avoiding those that will not. Everyone who has ever invested in stocks or commodities has at least one horror story, if not several. Because you like Dreyer’s ice cream over Blue Bell ice cream is not always a good investment strategy. You need to be clinical in your decisions as opposed to emotional.

If you actually want to get these long-term returns, you have to know how to invest properly. There’s many wrong ways to do it that can backfire on you quite badly. You should do the research beforehand and find out which companies have a history of a good return-on-investment (ROI) for their investors. You should also see if you can find some companies that offer high yield dividends. These are good shares to invest in because they offer a share of the companies profits to the investors.

Once you’ve found the right shares and made the decision to invest, you also need to commit to actually investing every single month. Persistence is the key to value with investments. Do not panic when things look like they’re in a downturn and also don’t try to predict the ups and downs of the market yourself. Just put the effort in beforehand and then invest in the right places. It will be worth your while.

Planning for Retirement

It might seem to you like retirement is a lifetime away, and I guess technically it is, but it’s really never too early to start planning ahead. You should definitely start preparing for your financial state once your working life is over because the time will come eventually. If you start working towards this as soon as possible it will much easier for you and won’t take a huge chunk of your paycheck every month.

There’s a few different ways to do this. There’s something which you may have heard of before known as an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). How this works is straightforward. It’s essentially a savings account into which you put a portion of your monthly income. You can usually set this to work automatically so that the money will just come straight out of your paycheck before taxes or a bank account, after taxes have been taken, and you don’t have to worry too much about it. You can also use a system called 401(k) which is basically the same thing but will be sponsored by your employer. On pre-tax investments you will be taxed when the money is withdrawn at retirement, so you are betting that taxes in the future will be the same or less than they are now. Other forms of IRA’s (Roth) take the taxes now and you are not taxed when withdrawn in retirement. Do your homework here, it is important. There are limits to the portion of the investment you can make yearly.

Not every company offers this, and it would be a good idea to do a bit of research on the advantages and disadvantages of 401(k) before you make the decision to use it. No matter which method you choose, you should make this a top priority as soon as the money starts coming in. You’ll thank yourself for it later.

Negotiating

Negotiation is a very useful skill to learn but I don’t mean that you should use it for every single purchase that you make. There’s no need to negotiate over the price of milk in the supermarket or a shirt in a clothes store, but think about this for your major expenses.

When you’re buying a car or a house, you’ll often find that the seller is willing to give a little bit of wiggle room when it comes to the price. If you’re going to negotiate, make sure that you do it before you commit to buying anything and also make it clear to the seller that you are willing to walk if you can’t come to an agreement. If you’re selling something yourself, the same rules apply and you should use the same techniques.

Negotiation is also a great skill to have when you are being offered a job. Someone who has a handle on their finances always ensures that they get the best salary and benefits possible.

Refusing

Once you are actually earning your own money for the first time, the urge to spend it on whatever you want starts to creep in. You might think that this won’t be a problem for you, but you will be surprised at how difficult it is to refuse the things that are tempting you. You must stick to every aspect of your budget, and this means not going overboard on the money that you’ve set aside for yourself.

If the option comes up to go on a road trip, or to an expensive restaurant, you should tell yourself that you can only do it if there’s sufficient money in the leisure portion of your budget. It can get frustrating, but doing this will also teach you to enjoy things more and not to make impulse decisions on how you spend your free time. This doesn’t exclusively apply to fun things either. Restrain yourself from contributing to fundraisers or helping out a friend who’s struggling with money unless you’ve got it to spare.

You might sometimes feel like you’re being pressured into doing things, but endure this feeling and refuse. Otherwise you’re financial state will suffer.

Conclusion

The most important thing that you should take away from all of this, is that skills like these five are best learned when you are young. Take your finances seriously from the second you start earning money, and you will reap the rewards as you progress through your life.

Prepping for a Night Hunt

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Hunting, in general, is very involved and requires many moving pieces. You need to be thinking about a lot of different variables and scenarios constantly in order to stay ahead of the prey and give yourself the best chance at that yearly trophy kill, or restocking your freezer for the coming winter. Taking this is one step further is hunting at night, where even the simplest of tasks, if not planned for and prepared, can ruin your hunt.

Recently my brother, two friends, and I entered a weekend long Coyote hunting tournament with the ultimate goal being who could bag the most yotes within the given time limit in southern Michigan. If there was a tie in quantity of yotes (which often happened, as the typical winning number is 4-5), then the size and weight would come into play. Our strategy was to hunt all night long and sleep during the day, but before we set off on the exertion, we had some serious prep work. The mission of this article is to provide you with a few (of many) concepts to consider prior to heading out for the night that we either successfully did or wish we would’ve during the tournament.

Survey/Scout the Surrounding Area

First and foremost is know the land you are hunting on and where the property lines lie. This is to stay on the legal side of the game, but also to help avoid run ins with other hunters, potentially running their hunts. There are some good resources online to help determine property lines, which I recommend checking out. After understanding boundaries, use google satellite view or even a drone with a camera to associate landmarks with the property lines. This is a very good practice to get used to as it is very easy to get turned around and even slightly lost at night. Without that full-daylight view of landmarks it is hard to judge distances and the distance you have traveled in the dark. Knowing that the opening to the field off to the south is the farthest spot you can go is very valuable prior to the hunt.

Beyond knowing the boundaries, we of course need to understand the paths the coyotes (or whatever game) is most likely going to travel. This can drastically change based on the terrain and weather patterns, but again, study these patterns with trail cameras and topographical layouts before the hunt! Additionally, take a pair of binoculars out on the trails to check the integrity of shooting lanes from your stands. Ensure no branches could deflect bullets or cause some disturbances.

Layout Proper Equipment for the Night

There is a lot of gear that is required for hunting and even more when it is at night. We of course can’t list all of the necessary pieces of equipment, but rather the unique ones for your pitch black adventures.

First and foremost here is the thermal scope you plan on using (if you do indeed plan on having one). We did an extensive review on a few thermal rifle scopes and, although expensive, they can absolutely make or break your hunt. Some of the scopes we checked out can even automatically calculate the trajectory of your bullets prior to firing the shot. This allows you to sit back, make some adjustments on the screen, and have a much better chance at hitting where you want to. Please note the weather conditions as well, as some of the scopes can operate in a wide range and only a few are frost resistant, if you think that is a possibility.

Secondly, a low level, red flashlight to get to the stand as quietly as possible is always a good idea. You could certainly use your thermal monocular or something similar, but a low red light will work well and is often overlooked in prepping.

Thirdly, dress warm! In Michigan at least, it gets very cold and of course the coldest time of the day is, of course, the night. Don’t underestimate the low temperatures and wear various layers of clothing to keep you comfortable.

Set up Blind/Stand and Know Shooting Lanes

We briefly mentioned understanding and analyzing the lay of the land during full daylight. To take this one step further, do a “dry-run” in the day and literally walk the exact path you are planning to follow the upcoming night. This can help you ensure you stay on track and, most importantly, make the least amount of noise possible getting to your perching place. You can also time yourself by setting obvious landmarks (a fence, a large tree, a rock outcropping, etc.) during your dry-run to help in judging distances traveled at night, mapping out your route. During our coyote tournament, one of my buddies actually got stuck in a barbed wire fence on the way to the tree blind. He had gotten slightly off the path and, not knowing any better, continued through some shrubs and ended up making quite the racket. Again, you can avoid this by walking that path a week or so early and identifying possible areas of concern before they bite you in the butt.

Along these lines, set up your blind or tree stand earlier on in the week, so that it is all set for you to come out to. We would recommend not setting it up during the day immediately preceding your night hunt, but rather at least a few days in advance. The main reason behind this strategy is to ensure you don’t disturb and scare off any game in the area during blind installation. Whether it is a tree stand, ground blind, or permanent structure blind, make sure you always are concentrating on safety. I know you’re excited for the big kill and the trophy, believe me, I have gotten the adrenaline a time or two, but we have to keep our health in mind. Make sure to have a safety harness already set up in the tree, make sure you have the tree stand completely secured and tested, and just do the small checks to ensure you are doing it safely and correctly.

In summary, make sure you understand the lay of the land, set out appropriate night time equipment, and set up your blind/stand early enough as to not scare off any game you’re interested in! You can contact Roger at https://buyerbenchmark.com if you have any further questions or comments!
