Drawbacks to Carrying Concealed

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

4.67/5 (15) Concealed carry is one way that people can keep protection, in the form of a firearm on their person at all times. I have frequently written about the merits of concealed carry and even the best way to carry concealed in my opinion for those who so choose. For the law-abiding citizen, carrying […]

Prep Blog Review: How Would You Survive An EMP?

Prep blog reviewIt’s a question all of us preppers have asked ourselves many times. It might actually be the first question that triggered our need to start prepping now, rather than wait and see what happens in the aftermath.

With that in mind, we gathered 5 articles that will come in useful in any off-grid scenario, but especially after an EMP takes down our grid.

1. How To Live Without Electricity – Part II

Blackout“We are a generation that was born on innovation and in a short period of time we became addicted to all the electronic devices that are part of our daily lives.

The Internet, the cell phones and our personal computer are all devices that control us and we can’t function properly without them. All these devices rely on a common denominator – electricity. When the flow of electricity suddenly stops, our normal existence will stop as well and we will have to adapt to a new world, a world without electricity.”

Read more on Prepper’s Will.

2. A Sobering Taste Of Grid Down

“On Tuesday Nov. 17, a massive hurricane-force windstorm slammed the Inland Northwest, notably northeast Washington and the Idaho panhandle. Hundreds of trees came down. Thousands of branches littered streets and intersections. Roofs flew off or were smashed by falling trees. Three people died. Power poles – not just lines, but poles – snapped like matchwood. Electricity across the two largest cities in the area – Spokane and Coeur d’Alene – as well as most of the outlying region, was down for anywhere from a few hours to 10 days.

To compound the misery, temperatures dropped into the high teens at night and low 30s during the day. With so many people utterly dependent on electricity for heating, cooking, lighting, medical care, sanitation and every other facet of comfortable life, results ranged from wretched to tragic.”

Read more on WND.

3. Simple survival tips for using a map and compass

compass“After all, the sun was out, the day was nice, the trail is clear, the scenery beautiful and you stuck the map and compass in the pack somewhere. It was hard to get to, so you didn’t check it.

And, the point was to get out in the woods and relax, and who can unwind when you have to fool around with land navigation tasks? Besides, you’re well prepared, with survival knife, a survival kit, tarp  and…all that stuff.”

Read more on Survival Common Sense.

4. 7 Secrets for Burning Sticks in the Rain

Fire“Mother Nature is neutral. She does not care if you’re able to survive what she throws at you. That’s her nature… uncaring, unpredictable, wild and beautiful.

I love a rainy night. But, come on! When I started this article, it had rained 16 out of the last 17 days in Georgia. Figuratively and literally, we were soaked to the bone. Nothing outside was dry… tinder, kindling, and fuel were saturated… perfect weather for some survival training.

You can’t control Mother Nature, but you can learn skills to survive her storms. I recently wrote about three skills that forgive your shortcomings in Core Temperature Control. All three are important. But if you could only work on one of these skills, I would recommend fire craft.”

Read more on Survival Sherpa.

5. Abandoned Cars: Survival Salvage Ideas

EMP car“I have known an unusual collection of people who can’t always tell me where they have been or what they have done without them saying, “If I tell ya, I’ll have to kill ya.” My standard line is if you have to even break one of my finger nails it’s too much information.

Most of us have read about EMP and or Grid Down situations which could leave many people not where they want to be when the lights go out.”

What Really Caused The California Terrorist Massacre?

big SBIt is painfully evident that the Leftist malevolent MSM is already equivocating this obvious prima-facie Islamic terrorist attack by disclaiming it as terrorism, absent any corresponding motives but not entirely ruling it out yet.

Yeah, sure; until the authorities can whitewash it like they did the recent Colorado Planned Parenthood terrorist shooting by claiming they don’t know the exact motive even though the shooter specifically mentioned abortion baby parts, and was associated with an organized group of Christian extremists that has claimed responsibility for a number of killings.

Rev Robert Jeffress, an ardent proprietary theocratic religionist seeming to be more preoccupied with moralist equivalency comparative ratios among religionist evildoing, was just on Fox News and, as always, sidetracked the most important issue in his brainwashed defensive mode. He was more worried about defending the sidebar issue of prayer when the New York Daily News headline saying “God Won’t fix this”–referring to their leftist anti-2nd/A need for more gun control–appeared.

The truth is that the Obama administration does not want to offend the Muslim religionists and too many of the rest of the religionists in this country are more concerned with God, than they are with security of their country.

This San Bernardino terrorist duo were Muslims who recently visited Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and had the characteristic Islamic State beheading garb, tactical uniforms, vests, and the Islamic State caliphate has already applauded the massacre on line. Not to mention when the police hit their apartment, it resembled an Iraqi IED bomb factory and had enough munitions to supply several other future terror attack missions such as this one.

Ironically, the typically tepid denouncement of this California terror attack by the Muslim CAIR organization and the hard to believe relative of the shooter, who claims sincere mystification as to his brother committing this atrocity and the lack o a motive either, was apparently disputed by a Muslim woman who stated on Fox that she supports proactive efforts to weed out and condemn radical Islam as it offends non violent Muslims in America as much as anyone else. Of course, she is in the minority of American Muslims who are reluctant to admit any Muslim support of radical jihadism, even though most are secretly in support of it.

Yet, amazingly, at this writing, with all the self incriminating condemning collective preponderance of evidence, the government and its agents had still not concluded that these murderous terrorists were Islamist sleeper cell members.

Yes, I know how that sounds. It’s like saying, hey, look, you people are so stupid that we can make any laws we want to control you even if means subverting Constitution of the United States! You don’t really think we give a shit about your safety, do you? Hahahah? Nah, no way these were Islamist terrorists. This was just another example of “workplace violence” the POTUS is so convinced about and wants us all to believe as well.

Insult to Injury

The rock salt thrown on our emotional wounds was that the AG’s statement concerning this act of war on ’We, The People’, did not say anything of American recognition of being in danger of radical Islamist attacks! And, the POTUS himself could not restrain himself in his San Bernardino comment today when he said they can’t say it was terrorism (and he’ll never say “Islamist terrorism” even when it is) because they just “don’t know that” yet and it still “could be workplace violence”.

Our own government officials are lying to us and trying to re-direct, obfuscate, and marginalize the true reality for their own political agenda. And we just sit there and suck it all up, like infants on a pacifier.

Not being able to say the term “radical Islam” to keep in the good non-offensive graces of Muslims to garnish the large Islamic voting block that supports his socialist party regime is one thing. But to also spit on our graves by being more concerned with his gun control agenda, and trying to disarm us so we can’t defend ourselves adequately, amounts to an insidious attitude that simply can’t be tolerated by true American Patriots. The POTUS, of all people, should be more concerned that our 2nd/A “Shall Not Be Infringed” so that We, The People, can have the advantage to protect ourselves when police are not around.

I often go hot when some nitwit leftist sheeps say something so insanely stupid like “more gun control would have stopped these terrorist attacks”. Would more gun registration in the form of universal background checks have stopped this California massacre? California has limited capacity magazine laws. Did that stop these shooters from having large capacity ones?

These murderers could pass any background check! They bought their guns legally on government 4473 registration forms. “Legal” just means that your purchases are registered for future confiscation, NOT for crime prevention! And registration is never for your personal safety. When that finally dawns on people, they usually have a couple too many afterwards at happy hour to assuage how stupid they feel.

Then I go super after burner when some morally debased LL who is suffering from an EMP brain circuitry blow out says something like, “Well, if any gun control law saves just one life, then it’s well worth it.” I then ask them, “Really…What about all the lives gun control doesn’t save? If just one Paris concert fan had a concealed hi-cap pistol, how many of the 130 murdered victims might have lived? If just one person at the San Bernardino Christmas party had a Glock 17 with 19 rounds of high power ammo under his jacket, and opened up on the shooters?”

Just the act of interrupting the methodical slaughter with directional suppressive firepower could have made all the difference in the world, even if the terrorists weren’t immediately killed. If I’d been there, and I wasn’t killed in the first couple seconds because of the element of surprise, I guarantee I would have jumped up and speed flanked them while blasting a dozen or more rounds on them without hitting bystanders and also drawing their fire off their targets. And because I never miss, I guarantee they’d at least be “temporarily” disrupted from firing. But just in case I only wounded them, I’d quickly put a couple more rounds each in the openings of their face masks.

fb

Rand Paul had a refreshingly pragmatic solution which I had already pointed out right after the Paris attacks last month. Rand Paul, unfortunately, is unlikely to be the GOP nominee, but it’s my opinion that nevertheless has the best solutions and ideas for immediate implementation. And he is at least more proactive of any other politician by putting forth a new bill to restrict and or seriously qualify access to our country from other known terrorist countries, which we all should force our Reps to support.

Unless you are a complete air head and remain under ball and chain, or you are a leftist agenda based power elite social parasite, you have nothing to prevent you from understanding and knowing for a fact that gun restrictions and control and even all out confiscation does not work anywhere, let alone in a libertarian free society. And any violation of our precious 2nd Amendment is anti-constitutional, anti-American, and it is intentionally placing the American people in serious danger!

So you don’t waste valuable time we don’t have left and resources we can’t afford to eliminate an inanimate tool, you instead eliminate the potential deleterious behavior of the human losers that is intent upon performing the unsocial act itself.

And of course I’ve never seen Hillary so popeyed jubilant and evil grinning frenzied in her sound bite press response to the San Bernardino terrorist cell atrocity about her renewed determination to disarm the American free citizens with more illegal law restrictions, and by launching a counterattack on the gun lobby and 2/A protectors!

It is a difficult concept for someone like me to deal with. The convoluted absurdity of justice and security forced upon us by the leftist regime and its MSM propaganda mind control Hillary Pac group to actually want to disarm the free American people while we are all under direct assault by murderous sleeper cells, who care less about any gun control laws because they simply don’t subscribe to them, is something I lose a lot of sleep over. And so should you.

It can’t be sane to agree with a POTUS and this tyrant regimes solution that protecting us from murderous religionist Jihadists is to prevent us from protecting ourselves by violating our 2/A liberties and disarming us. When he should be making it less restrictive for Citizens to have firearms! Starting with lifting restrictions on locations like “Easier to Kill Us Here” zones aka “gun free” zones.

So You Really Want to Know Who Is to Blame?

Of course a major part of the fault goes to the POTUS and his cohorts and totalitarian policies which are definitely a large part of the problem, and not a real time solution. And sadly, this amounts to clear prosecutable violations of national and private security.

They’ve done everything from outright denial of clearly identifiable Jihadist attacks, to bullshitting us with the non effective illusion of dismantlement at the source of the IS and other anti-Western middle East Islamist terrorist groups who have declared war on us, to the complete lack of enforcement of sufficient border protection and immigration checks, to preclude the ridiculously easy access to our country by hard core enemies of our nation.

And then lying to our faces about it because they think we are all too stupid to know the difference. It always bothers me that the government refers to a “war on terrorism” without being able to say who the terrorists are. Rudi Juliano just said on national TV that “anybody who thinks this is NOT terrorism has no business being in law enforcement, and…is simply a moron”.

I have to go one better. Anyone who thinks we must destroy the 2nd Amendment by universal registration background checks for future confiscation efforts for absolutely no pragmatic or viable public safety rational, except this regime’s purposeful agenda to disarm the free American populate for future totalitarian milking of the sheeple, deserves to be arrested and charged with treason. For the betrayal of our citizens right to safety and violating the Constitution of the United States which they swore to uphold.

“FREEDOM LIES IN EVERYONE’S HEARTS. BUT IT MUST DO MORE THAN JUST LIE THERE.” – Judge Andrew Napolitano

At the very least, the entire voting population regardless of their political party affiliation, ethnicity, race or religious preference, should recognize the greatest threat to our private freedoms and security that this current regime represents and use our voting voice and power to put a stop to this egregious tyranny and disregard for our national security this coming election.

Because ultimately, the American People are the cause of our own government failure and our own national endangerment. We, the People, are still in charge of and accountable for our own political destiny.

Because our trust had been taken advantage of by our past governments and corrupt representatives and worthless politicians and crony administrations, we must all come together to prevent this totalitarian juggernaut from further trespassing on our Bill of Rights for their own agenda based power greed, once and for all, as our framers provided for us to do.

We must unite and remove this astoundingly dangerous current government beast and at least get in office non-professional agenda based politicians like one of the so-called outsiders to start a much needed organizational reform type of revolution for 2016.

Otherwise we have no one to blame in the end…but ourselves.

Lets Call it For What it Is – Another Attack by Radicalized Muslims

I was not surprised when Obama and Hillary both started calling for more “gun control” within minutes of the shooting in San Bernardino, California being reported… They don’t even wait until the victims bodies were cold, before using the tragedy to push their agenda of disarming law-a-biding Americans…

They and the anti-second amendment mainstream media are like vultures circling the dead bodies of the victims, while salivating with thoughts of furthering their agenda, and that is the total disarmament of law-abiding Americans. It’s a sickening display but...

6 Top Foods That Slowly Kill Your Heart

Heart healthYou may not even realize it, but chances are good that you eat at least one thing that’s terrible for your heart on a daily basis. The human machine was created to run at its best when fueled by optimal nutrients. Our ancestors lived this, but we’ve gotten so far away from the foods that they ate that they wouldn’t even recognize ¾ of the foods on the shelf today.

One in FOUR deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease! Nearly every single case is caused by one of three things, or a combination of them; poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and chronic stress. Reducing all three of these reduces your chance of dying from heart disease to almost nil.

Many foods directly damage your heart while others create other health issues that will then affect your heart. For example, sugar isn’t bad for your heart, but if eaten in large quantities, it causes obesity, which then damages your heart. Some of the foods that we’ll discuss today may seem like no-brainers, but others will surprise you.

Trans fats

olive oilOriginally created as an alternative to that horrible, evil substance known as butter, (note sarcasm), trans fats have now been proven to increase bad (LDL) cholesterol while decreasing good (HDL) cholesterol. There are several types of fats: trans fats, saturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats typically have the least impact on your cholesterol levels.

Your body needs fats in order to survive. For example, omega-3’s found in olive oil, fatty fish, coconut oil, nuts and seeds is an essential nutrient that your body can’t produce but still needs in order to preserve heart and brain health. Typically, saturated fats (with the exception of coconut oil) should be consumed in limited quantities. Trans fats should be avoided altogether. No good comes from it.

Foods that you should avoid eating or stockpiling because of their trans-fat content include packaged baked goods and icings, packaged cookies, hot dogs, canola oil, margarine, processed fried foods, shortening, biscuit mixes, microwave popcorn, non-dairy creamer and “butter” crackers.

The upside here is that if you’re canning whole foods and are attempting to stockpile foods and meats that you grow, you’re avoiding trans fats without even realizing you’re doing it.

Refined Grains

Foods such as white flour and instant rice have been refined to the point that all of the healthy ingredients that provide valuable vitamins and minerals have been removed. These foods have zero nutritional value, with the exception that some of them have vitamin D or calcium added back in.

Some foods in this category include white bread, bagels, pasta, flour tortillas, biscuits (yeah, it kinda hurts my southern heart to say that – pardon the pun) and pie crusts/pastry crusts. Instead, use products made with whole grains and switch to long-grain brown rice.

Like sugar, refined grains don’t directly harm your heart but they don’t provide any nutritional value. On the flip side, whole grains provide fiber that’s known to reduce your risk of heart disease by keeping you fuller longer, which helps you control your weight. Fiber also helps lower cholesterol, which DOES directly decrease your risk of heart disease.

In other words, by replacing heart-healthy whole grains with processed ones, you’re cutting a vital part of heart health from your diet. Make the switch back to the good stuff.

When stockpiling, any type of whole grain will store for years without losing hardly any nutritional value. One tip, though: once you grind it, you need to use it within a week, maybe two, because it goes rancid once you release the oils in the kernels.

Sugar

sugarsYes, your body needs glucose to function; most metabolic functions depend on it for energy production. Strictly speaking, sugar isn’t bad for your heart in normal quantities. However, when you compare a lollipop, which is pure, refined sugar, to a peach, which contains natural, fibrous sugar, the nutritional values aren’t even on the same planet.

Refined sugar has zero nutritional value; I don’t care how many people say that candy gives you a nice energy pop to help you get through the day, I contend that eating a piece of fruit will give you that same energy, but will provide it in a steady stream for a few hours because the fiber in the fruit slows the digestion of the food and thus the delivery of sugar to the blood stream.

Refined sugar has been shown to be actually physically addictive. People who are used to eating a lot of sugary products on a daily basis suffer side effects such as hard-to-resist cravings, fatigue, headaches and other symptoms until the body adapts to the lack of sugar. It’s quite literally a drug.

When combined with trans fats, as is the case with candy bars, commercial ice cream, and baked goods, all you’re getting is empty calories and fat that will make you fat, increase your odds of developing diabetes and other metabolic disorders. These conditions all lead to heart disease.

From strictly a health standpoint there’s no need to stockpile anything that has no nutritional value just so that you can meet your caloric input for the day. There are many other ways to get the sugar that your body needs without storing back junk food. For instance, instead of candy bars, stockpile healthy granola bars that you can make yourself at home with just your choices of fruits, nuts and honey.

If you buy canned fruit to stockpile, make sure that it’s canned in fruit juice instead of syrup; juice is high in calories but it also provided nutrients such as vitamin C, unlike syrup that has no nutritional value whatsoever.

Fatty Meats

If you’re a meat eater, and I am, then steak is delicious. However, fatty meats raise your cholesterol. This doesn’t just apply to red meat; chicken skin and pork fat are bad for you too. The reason why is because it raises your bad cholesterol, which causes atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. This, of course, causes heart disease.

When you’re storing meat, especially if you’re dehydrating it, you want it to be as lean as possible because fat goes rancid fairly quickly. You need to cut the fat, literally. When canning your meat, trim the fat off and try to use leaner meats such as venison. When you can chicken, do so without the skin. Of course, it’s fine to keep some of that fat so that you can make gravy, etc.

I’m not saying that you have to cut the fat completely out of your diet, but you should limit your consumption of the bad stuff. It will kill you slowly, but certainly.

Energy Drinks
This one is painful for me too, because I’m a huge fan. However, the mix of “proprietary blends” found in most of them contain such ingredients as taurine, caffeine, ginseng, B vitamins, guarana and sugar all work together to give you a quick energy boost but it also raises your blood pressure for a couple of hours after you drink them.

This may be fine occasionally as long as your heart and your blood pressure is healthy, but if you drink them chronically or if you have high blood pressure or heart disease, energy drinks can be harmful to your heart.

Salt

Salt is literally what keeps your blood volume up so that it can pump through your veins in a healthy manner. Stated very simply, it regulates your blood pressure. Too much salt, or if your body can’t regulate salt properly, and you’ll have high blood pressure. Of course, if you already have high blood pressure caused by medications, atherosclerosis or other cardiovascular issues, you need to limit your salt intake.

Your body needs salt; it’s a mineral essential to your survival. However, you don’t need TOO MUCH salt. When you’re stockpiling, watch the levels of sodium in your foods. You can do this by canning or storing natural foods instead of processed, boxed foods.

Top Foods that are Bad for Your Heart

donutsOK, so in a nutshell, there are foods out there that you should avoid if you want to keep your heart healthy. If you notice, these foods contain a combination of three or more of the ingredients that we just discussed. You don’t necessarily have to cut them completely out of your diet but eat them as a rare treats rather than as dietary staples.

  • Pizza
  • Doughnuts and pastries
  • Baked sweets such as cakes and pies
  • Fatty red meat
  • Chicken skin
  • Breaded foods
  • Fried foods
  • Ice cream and other frozen treats
  • Pudding
  • White bread
  • Pasta
  • Cream Sauces
  • Sugary drinks
  • Condiments such as mayonnaise, salad dressings and ketchup

Heart Healthy Substitutions

There’s no reason to sacrifice flavor in order to stay healthy. Instead of using creamy, processed salad dressings, use olive oil and vinegar, seasonings or lemon juice. Have a well-seasoned skinless chicken breast instead of country fried chicken. Have a filet instead of a ribeye or, if possible, eat venison or another lean red meat instead of beef.

Instead of a bowl of ice cream, have some fruit. Trust me, it WILL kill your sweet tooth. Instead of slathering your sandwich with mayo or ketchup, use mustard or oil and vinegar.

Your heart health will be critical in a survival situation. Not only will it help you if you need to run, maintaining a healthy heart now will keep you off medications that may not be available if SHTF. Plus, there’s the obvious benefit of living longer, and none of us will argue against that benefit!

If you have something to add to this list, please feel free to add it in the comments below.

An Affordable, DIY, Semi Portable, Rocket Stove

rocket stove

Today we present another article in our non-fiction writing contest – By Randy W

As a frugal and self, sufficient individual, you may be interested in an alternative to the earthen block, tin can or commercially made, version of a rocket stove. Here is another effective alternative to those found in articles that are circulating on the internet, YouTube or in “Prepper Blogs” these days.

I have not seen any one touting or describing how to turn common black stove pipe fittings into a rocket stove so I will try and explain the process I use to make a rocket stove out of common stove pipe...

City vs. Rural Bug In: How Do You Handle Your Reserves?

City vs ruralIf you happen to be a city dweller and love it, then you may not understand why others would not get caught in such a setting if their life depended on it.

By the same token, people living in rural areas may see no point to bugging out to the city, let alone moving to another rural area.

No matter how these perceptions involve you decision to bug in, you have to realize that each group of survivors will meet some unique challenges based on the population density of the area in question. While both parties will need to meet the same basic needs for food and water and even health, skills required may be a bit more different than expected.

Food Gathering and Storage

City/Inner City

If you live in a small apartment in the city, there will be very little, if any room available to store and grow food. This, in turn, means that you will most likely not be able to go on consuming the foods you are accustomed to and must look to some other options. This includes learning how to grow and prepare micro plants and raising insects.

Both options provide nutritious foods, can be raised in very small spaces, and are prolific enough to sustain you for quite some time. While these options may not seem palatable, they are better than starving to death or risking having stored goods stolen just because others know you are stockpiling.

Rural

On the surface, it is bound to look like rural areas will have far fewer problems with gathering and storing food. Among other things, you may have a larger home and even a cellar or other location to stockpile foods. In addition, you may be part of a tight knit community where hunting and sharing food are the norm rather than the exception.

You may also have more access to clean waters filled with fish that you can catch and consume in time of need.  Today, it is commonly thought that many survivors will take to rural areas and live off the animals and plants that form the wooded urban areas.

Unfortunately, all of these plans can be easily dashed by the following (and likely problems):

  • Waterways may already be contaminated with industrial toxins that will make it impossible to consume fish and animal that rely on the water. Unless you demand cleaning up these areas now and a stop to the pollution, these resources will not be safe for you to use in a crisis situation.
  • Public lands supposedly set aside for camping, hiking, and general public use have long ago been (via both democrat and republican support) secretly sold or leased to miners, oil drillers, and renewable fuel developers. If you do some research, you will be amazed at the millions of acres routinely sold or leased right out from under you via the BLMs “multiple land use” doctrine.  Do not assume that once the government collapses, you can simply go to these “wilderness” reserves and hope to live there in peace and safety. It is far more likely that you will be met by industry paid and government paid thugs that will kill you just as quickly as they would kill indigenous people in South America that stand in the way of industrial development in those areas.
  • Nuclear missile sites, nuclear power plants, and illegal nuclear dumping sites may already be contaminating the air, water, and land that you rely on for daily survival. Not only can this become more dangerous in a crisis situation, it may be killing you and your loved ones right now.
  • As people migrate out of the cities and into the rural areas, they will also bring crime and disease. No matter how many arms and defensive strategies you have, some of these criminals are going to stay around and may well establish sufficient power to make it very hard for you to gather or grow food without their interference. Even if you have a stockpile and land to hunt and grow on, never assume that you will be reduced to the same kinds of problems faced by city dwellers who choose to bug in.

In rural areas, it is more important than ever to get past the idea that “money and jobs” is more important than sustaining life. Don’t let the media and its fake behavior shaping “value of social status” agenda overwhelm you or prevent you from making demands to oust, recall, or ban anything that damages land, water, or air that you know would be, or can be made/restored  to be of value for survival needs. Money means nothing when there is no safe water to drink, no safe food to eat, and no safe air to breathe.

How You Can Prepare for Both

To begin, the best thing you can do is be aware of the problems in your geographic area. For city dwellers, there isn’t likely to be much you can do before a crisis hits. Some options may include demanding that landlords allow for rooftop gardens or look for other ways to demand the development of food growing areas within the city.

There are many ways to grow food indoors and underground that can be used in these areas. Not only will this make it easier to build community cohesion, it may just help reduce violence and other problems plaguing the local area at the current time. As previously mentioned, rural area dwellers must also demand that food growing areas be kept safe, or cleaned up so that they are safe to take food from.

No matter where you are bugging in, learn how to grow and safely use micro plants (essentially seeds that are allowed to sprout and develop up to one set of leaves) and small, rapidly multiplying insects.

Remember that ants, crickets, and a few other common insects are actually far more nutritious than conventional meats. If you raise these insects yourself, you will not need to worry about all the hormones, toxins, and carcinogens that are currently found in the meat that you have been socially conditioned to accept as more appealing than insects.

For city dwellers, it may seem like a waste of time to keep some fishing gear and hunting tools onhand. Nevertheless, if you have to move to a rural area later on, at least you will have some tools to work with. Take the time now to practice with these tools so that you can use them effectively and efficiently in time of need.

Water

City/Inner City

Considering the way city governing bodies tend to force people to pay a water tax, it should come as no surprise that many have outlawed the use of wells, and may even have taken steps to make sure that existing wells can no longer be used. In a crisis situation, the government’s inability to deliver water will spell death and disaster for millions in just a matter of days.

This is just one reason why you will need to be able to produce water from moisture held in the air or store that provided through rainfall. There are a number of dehumidifier systems that can accomplish this task. Make sure that you also know how to use low tech methods for doing the same job. From there, you will also need to be able to purify water.

Make sure that you know how to make a basic sock filter that utilizes activated carbon, bone char, and sand. Surprisingly enough, you can reuse these items once they become filled with contamination, so your stockpiles may not need to be as big as you think.

It is also fairly easy to make carbon. While it takes a higher temperature to make bone char, if indigenous people throughout the world can achieve this goal, you can too. It may also be of some help to make sure that you can distill water to remove any contaminants left behind by the sock filter.

Rural

Many people feel that if they already have access to private wells and other sources of water, it will be possible to pretty much go on as usual. On the other hand, it is also important to realize that water pumps will eventually fail. If you already have an old or worn pump, that time will come sooner rather than later.

Now would be a good time to look for hand operated pumps that can be used to pull water from shallow wells as well as ram pumps that can easily deliver water uphill. If you are looking for a good project to work, building your own ram pump may be useful and cost effective. Individuals that have access to a pond or river may also want to utilize an Archimedes Screw for both power generation and water pumping.

As people move from the city to rural areas, they are going to bring with them a tremendous thirst for water right along with crime and disease. Therefore, when it comes to preparing your bug in location, it is very important to make sure you know how to secure water and prevent unwanted intruders from accessing it.

On the surface, this may not necessarily be a concern if the water is plentiful and you have the idea that it is Ok to share such a plentiful resource. On the other hand, there are people in the world that are already very greedy, or they will become greedy because they have insecurity issues after a major crisis. In these situations, large groups may just decide to take over the water resource and prevent the rightful owners of it from using it.

In some cases these situations can be headed off using community structuring and shaping that are aimed at reducing insecurity and recognizing, then curtailing greedy actions as they surface.  Unfortunately, there may also be times when you will need to use weapons, traps, and other devices to defend your water supply and access to it.

Just make sure that you know which situation warrants a specific action so that you do not inadvertently harm people that may have a lot to offer you in terms of long term survival and the opportunity for the next generations to find suitable mates.

How You Can Prepare for Both

Both rural and city bug in survivors can store away rain barrels that can be used to catch water on a regular basis. Since social collapse is apt to come with increasing levels of pollution and water contamination, you will also both need to know how to purify water using relatively simple filter mechanisms.

Rural bug in survivors may also want to consider having a dehumidifier system on hand just in case they cannot access wells, or have to go underground where it may be impossible to access ponds, rivers, or other readily available sources of water.

urban-versus-rural-living

Medical Needs

City/Inner City

When space is limited for growing herbs or storing medicines, you will need to choose carefully between many different options. Start off by making sure you have a good idea about your current medical needs and projected future ones.

Next, study human anatomy and physiology, and then take some courses in herbal remedies. Finally, choose at least 10 – 15 herbs that you can grow in a small area and store away heirloom seeds that can be grown at any time.

Make sure that you also know how to pollinate these plants without bees so that you can replace plants as they are used or die off as a natural part of their own life cycle. It is also very important to know how to propagate these plants from roots and cuttings.

Rural

As a member of a local community or someone that lives relatively isolated from others, you may already be aware that people in more populated areas have far more access to conventional medical care. As such, you may already know a good bit about emergency medicine simply because no one else is on hand to meet your needs in a timely manner.

You may also know of a number of herbal remedies to manage a range of ailments, and thus have no need for more modern drugs. In this case, all you need to do is expand your knowledge and herbal list to include plants from other parts of the world that may be more effective at treating a wider range of diseases.

It may be of some help to consult with a conventional textbook on human anatomy and physiology, and then take courses on herbal remedies. These studies should provide at least some information on Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicines that feature plants you can grow in your own home.

Since a number of diseases can be mitigated or even cured by meditation, reiki (which is being increasingly recognized by conventional medicine as an effective and safe pain management system) and binaural music, do not hesitate to explore these modalities and learn how to use them for yourself and others.

How You Can Prepare for Both

Make sure that you know readily growable herbal equivalents to any medicine that you are taking. Work with a doctor that is willing to monitor and help you as you experiment with different herbal solutions in order to find one that works for you. Next, seek to grow the herbs that are of most value to you.

During this process, you will never go wrong by learning as much as possible about how the internal body organs are placed and how they work. You may also want to study textbooks on clinical medicine so that you know as much as possible about how to manage a range of situations.

Oddly enough, these books may also be of value because they can help restore vital technologies and learnings to future doctors long after vital medical technologies and drug formulations are lost during the crisis.

It is fair to say that human beings have the same basic needs no matter where they live. On the other side of the equation, any number of social values and customs can become deeply ingrained because people in the local area know that is what works for them.

Try working with some of the suggestions in this article to see if they will meet your needs, or expand on them as you gain experience and skills that will make it easier to survive a disaster in any location.

Creating Partnerships for Bugging Out

By Dennis Diaz
There is a very real possibility that a disaster that strikes your area could make it impossible for you to continue to live and thrive there. All preppers know they need a bug out plan. A bug out plan is not complete without a retreat in mind.
Because your immediate area will be compromised or unsafe for you to remain, you need somewhere to retreat to. The ideal location would be within walking distance, but not so close it will be affected by whatever calamity has stricken your area.
Picture
Often times preppers make the mistake of assuming bugging out is all about getting out of dodge and worrying about the rest when they get there. Get where? And how hard will it be to build a shelter especially if the weather is cold, rainy or snowing? Bugging out is one of the last things you should want to do. You are giving up your home, your supplies and all of the creature comforts to head off into the unknown. However, when you prearrange to retreat to a friend's house, you are not really losing anything at all.

Your network should include people who do not live in the same town or neighborhood as you. This benefits you as well as your group. Having a number of contacts in several surrounding towns or locations is ideal. If you happen to be the lucky one who was not in the middle of a siege or natural disaster, the people in your network will come to your house or retreat.

In an ideal situation, you would be able to trust your network contacts implicitly. You could help them build outbuildings, setup firepits, till garden plots and other things that will be necessary in an off-grid, self-sustaining situation. You would help your contact build up a place that will sustain your family as well as their family and any other members of your group.

This is something that will require a great deal of trust, especially if you will be leaving resources at the secondary location. However, it is a tit for tat situation. Everybody in the network would be contributing resources as well as time and energy to ensure there are retreats set up around a given area.

Every prepper knows you don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket. Having options available increases your chances of survival. You may be forced to retreat to location A because your home along with all of the other ones have been compromised. Having numerous options spread out over a region gives  you the flexibility to change your plans based on whatever disaster you are dealing with. If roads are blocked, you are not stuck. You can take another route in the opposite direction to another retreat.
Your secondary retreat should be ready to sustain you. If you are walking, which is a strong possibility, you cannot possibly carry hundreds of pounds of food and water. By utilizing a member in your network, you have someone safeguarding your supplies versus leaving your emergency surplus in an isolated retreat.

When you choose to utilize people that live around you, but not next door, you are also going to get the benefit of their knowledge. They are going to know where to find water. They will have an idea of the best places to hunt as well as forage. You will be in their backyard and vice versa. You won't have to go off on scouting missions that could be fruitless. The contact will have already done all the exploring and scouting. It will save time and energy you can focus on rebuilding and taking care of necessary duties.

Don't wait until disaster strikes to try and form a community of survivors. Start picking and choosing your members today so you have the best shot at survival in the aftermath.

Christmas Buying Guide – Give the Gift of Prepping

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

It is finally December and for me and all of the other procrastinators out there, it’s time to consider Christmas gifts for those around you. Fortunately for me, my wife handles the lion’s share of gift selection and acquisition for our family and children. I get off relatively easy in that respect as long as […]

The Prepper’s Countdown Checklist to New Year’s Eve

big calendar

As November gives way to December and the last of the warm weather fades, it’s time to make sure that all is in order in case of emergency.

We’ve made a list to help you get ready to settle in for the cold months to come so that you’ll be ready for an emergency through the winter, and ready to start anew in the spring.

Let’s see what our tasks are this month. Read them below, then print the calendar at the end of this article, and use it to complete these preparations one by one!

Dec 1 – Make Sure You’ll Stay Warm

Whatever type of fuel you use, take a few minutes today to double check your fuel supply.

You may have central air, but since you’re a prepper, you also know the importance of having a back-up heat source and plenty of fuel. If you use propane heaters, make sure that they’re in good working order and that you have plenty of fuel.

If you heat with wood, how much you will need depends on several factors including the size of your house, where you live, how well your home is insulated and what type of wood you use. Usually, four cords will be more than enough for an average-sized (1500 sf) house in the Northern US through the winter, but in this case, it’s better to have too much than too little.

Dec 2 – Check Water Supplies

Take today to check your water supplies to make sure you have enough and that it’s safely stored where it won’t freeze.

In the summer, you may only need to worry about a few days’ worth of water but depending upon where you live, you may need to power up that supply to cover a couple of weeks. Remember that you can only go 24 hours without water and in extremes temperatures; you need more water than usual. One gallon of water per person per day is the minimum that you should stockpile.

Dec 3 – Clean Out Chicken Coop

Before everything turns into big frozen blobs, make your chickens’ winter nesting place clean and warm today.

Chickens need a well-ventilated, clean environment. In the winter, chickens roost more and proper ventilation is important to keep down moisture created by condensation released by your chickens. Moisture can accumulate on combs and waddles and cause frostbite. Make sure that ventilation areas such as windows are sufficient to allow airflow but not drafts, because drafts can be deadly.

And read our articles about raising chickens, so you could increase your egg production!

Dec 4 – Winterize Your Garden for Next Year

Take today to get your garden ready to grow beautiful, nutritious food next year.

Trim dead stalks and remove weeds. Work your compost into the soil so that it has time to break down into valuable nutrients that will make your plants grow like crazy next spring.

Dec 5 – Clean Guns

Take today to clean your guns so that they’re ready for the dampness of winter. This is one of our favorite topics on Survivopedia, so CLICK HERE to read our articles on gun cleaning.

This is a task that many people overlook but it’s essential that your weapons are kept in good working order. That shotgun in the closet won’t protect you if it’s rusted or so dirty that the mechanisms don’t work correctly when you fire it. Take a few minutes to break down your guns, clean them and oil them.

Dec 6 – Check/Stock Ammo

Take time today to stock and rotate your ammo.

Hunting season just ended and summer target practicing is over. Take the time now before the snow seriously settles to make sure that you have plenty of ammo. If you only keep ammo in case SHTF, make sure that it’s still in good shape to use. The life of your ammo is dependent upon the type so know what you have.

Dec 7 – Sharpen Knives

Take time today to sharpen your knives. Whether it’s your hunting knives, or your kitchen knives, you’ve probably used them quite a bit over the summer and the blades are likely dull.

Go through the house today and sharpen all of your knives. If nothing else, you’ll have a good blade with which to carve the Christmas ham!

Dec 8 – Check Fences

Take today to make sure your fences are secure, whether they’re used for keeping animals in or intruders out.

Now that most of the greenery is gone, it’s a great time to walk your fence line and clear it of any debris that may have fallen or tangled in it over the spring and summer months. Mend any spots that need it.

Dec 9 – Bring in Delicate Plants

If you have plants outside that you don’t want to freeze, and that can be brought inside, do so now if you didn’t do it already. Your herbs and other plants that you want to keep going through the winter won’t do so well if they are outside in freezing temperatures! Frozen basil isn’t nearly as good as fresh!

Dec 10 – Stock up on Board Games and Craft Items

Take today to make sure you have plenty to do when it’s too cold to be outside.

Make sure that your board games have all of their pieces and that you have plenty of craft supplies. Since it’s Christmas season, plan some homemade gifts that you can turn into a family event. A great prepper craft idea: paracord bracelets and pet collars.

Dec 11 – Clean Your Chimney

If you use a fireplace or a wood burner and you missed the autumn preparations, take today to clean you chimneys, or schedule a professional.

Creosote builds up in your chimney and pipes and will catch fire if you’re not careful. This is something that you should take care of at least annually. It may not need cleaned that often, but you should at least have it checked.

Dec 12 – Clean Your Dryer Vent Pipe

Take today to clean the vent that runs outside from your dryer.

Lint is extremely flammable and buildup is one of the top causes of house fires. Even if it doesn’t start a fire, excess lint in the pipe can become damp from condensation, then freeze, creating a cycle that causes further lint buildup that will cause your dryer to function less than efficiently.

Dec 13 – Wrap Young Trees

Take time today to protect the tender bark of young fruit trees by wrapping them.

The bark of young trees can be extremely thin and freezing temperatures can damage them. Since those apples and peaches are going to be delicious next fall, you don’t want to kill the trees now!

Dec 14 – Wrap Your Pipes

If you didn’t do it already, take today to wrap the pipes under your house in heat tape if they’re prone to freezing. The same thing goes for any outdoor plumbing such as the pipes in your barn. Not only will this insure that you’ll have running water when you need it, you’ll also avoid costly repairs of burst pipes.

Read the tips that we’ve presented here about water usage and storage during winter for more info on the topic.

Dec 15 – Clean Your Gutters

Take today to clean the fall leaves from your gutters so that winter rains won’t accumulate and freeze.

If water accumulates in your gutters and freezes, the weight can be enough to bring the gutter down. Since your gutters help protect the foundation of your house as well as the outer walls, it’s important that they function properly.

Dec 16 – Seal Entrances from Drafts

Take today to make sure your windows and doors seal well.

One of the biggest energy sucks is leaky entrances. Not only do they raise your heating bill, it also makes your feet cold, which nobody wants! Weather stripping is dirt cheap and is available at superstores and hardware stores all over the place. Since it’s so easy to install, you could probably do every single window and door in your house in a couple of hours if needed.

Or you could DIY your own insulating window frames following the instructions you’ll find in this Survivopedia article. Oh, and this will help keep heat-seeking creepy-crawlies out, too.

Dec 17 – Check Tools

Take today to check the condition of your winter hand tools.

There’s nothing more irritating than having the handle of your snow shovel break while you’re trying to dig out for work. It would probably be a bad thing if the head of your axe flings off while you’re in mid-swing chopping wood, too. Take a few minutes to go over your tools to make sure that they’re in good shape.

Dec 18 –  Prepare Summer Machinery for Winter

Take the time to prepare your summer machinery such as lawn mowers, weed eaters and dirt bikes for winter. Depending on the machine, you may need to drain the fluids and perform other maintenance tasks to keep them ready to use next spring.

Dec 19 – Winterize Your Vehicles

Take today to get your cars ready for winter, if you didn’t do it already. And even if you did, an extra check would make no harm.

Cars and trucks require different care for winter weather. You need to make sure that you have antifreeze in your radiator and you may need to change to a different viscosity oil. You should probably also get tires with winter tread and check to make sure that your wipers and heater are in good working order. A good once-over will help you get safely back and forth when you need to.

It also won’t hurt to throw a bag of sand in the trunk in case you get stuck, either.

Dec 20 – Prepare Winter Equipment

Take today to double-check all of your winter machinery and equipment.

Machinery such as snow plows, winches on trucks, four wheelers and other winter equipment need love, too. Make sure that your equipment is up to snuff by checking fluids, lines, tires, and other parts that make ‘em go. Make sure you have plenty of salt for sidewalks, too.

Dec 21 – Stockpile Animal Feed

Take today to go grab some extra bags of feed for the dogs and livestock. If you’ve already done that, then check your stockpiles to make sure that they’re stored so that they won’t fall victim to dampness or vermin.

Dec 22 – Change Horse’s Shoes or Have Shoes Removed

Take today to winterize your horse’s feet.

Winter is often a good time to let your horses go barefoot so that you’ll have plenty of hoof to work with in the spring. Summer shoes can be slick and can cause ice balls to collect under the hoof. If you want to keep them ready for riding across slick terrain, consider using borium shoes that provide additional traction.

Also, if you blanket your horses, make sure that all the straps and buckles on your blankets are secure to prevent injury. If you’ve had horses for very long, you probably know that they’re accidents waiting to happen!

Dec 23 – Check Your Food Stockpile

Take today to check expiration dates and rotate your food stockpile.

You’re probably getting ready to cook a big meal for the holidays so take today to go through your food stockpile. If you’re using anything there for your meal, use this opportunity to use the oldest first and to check the expiration dates on all of your food items. Also, make sure that dried goods such as beans and flour are securely stored so that moisture and critters can’t get to them.

Dec 24 and 25 – Open Presents and Enjoy the Day with your Loved Ones!

It’s Christmas Eve, then Christmas. Take these two days to do whatever it is that you do with your family, and appreciate the peace and health of them all!

Merry Christmas!

Dec 26 – Waterproof Your Clothing

Take today to waterproof your outdoor gear. Nothing is more uncomfortable, or even as life-threatening, as wet clothing and shoes in freezing temperatures. There are many different ways that you can waterproof your clothes, but pick a way and do it now.

Here’s a good article to help you with this task.

Dec 27 – Winterize Bug-Out Bags

Take today to make sure that you have winter items in your bug-out bags.

Check clothing to make sure that it’s the right size and weather-appropriate. You may want to put some heat packs in there and add some extra garbage bags, too. Oh, and a Sterno can or two wouldn’t be a bad idea, either. In a pinch, they put off a ton of heat in comparison to none at all and will provide a heat/cooking source for several hours.

Just go through and make sure that you have what you need for a winter bug out.

Dec 28 – Replenish Medical Supplies

Take today to replenish your medical supplies and make sure that everything is still good. Here’s our list of top 10 types of meds that you need to stockpile.

Now’s a good time to go through your medical kit and make sure that it’s well stocked and that all of your items are still good. For instance, medical tape goes bad after a few years and you should check the expiration dates on any medications that you keep in there, too. You probably also raided it a few times for summer boo-boos, so now’s the time to make sure you have what you need in case SHTF and you can’t get out.

Dec 29 – Change Batteries in Smoke Detector

Take today to change the batteries in your smoke detector.

Yes, I realize that some of you may have done this when the time changed like everybody says to do, but if you didn’t, do it now. House fires increase exponentially in the winter. A smoke detector with dead batteries is just as bad as no smoke detector at all. As a matter of fact, it may be worse because you have a false sense of security.

Dec 30 – Rotate Battery Supplies

Take today to check your battery supply to make sure they’re good and that you have enough. Here’s what you need to know about choosing batteries for your supply.

Batteries last for a long time, but not forever. I always put a date on the pack when I buy a pack. Cylindrical carbon zinc batteries will stay good at room temperature (between 65-75 degrees) for 3-5 years, cylindrical alkaline batteries will stay good for 5-10 years and cylindrical lithium batteries will store for 10-15 years.

Still, I’d change out anything that’s getting even close to that date. Just put them in something that you’re going to use right now. Hint – remote controls and video game controls are a great way to get rid of batteries that need used!

Dec 31 – Break out the Wine for the New Year!

Take today finish the small chores around the house and contemplate all of the good stuff that has happened to you over the last year.

Don’t focus on the bad stuff – that’s all in the past! Go in early, and get ready to do whatever it is that makes you happy when the old year ends and the new year begins!

And here’s the calendar that we’ve promised!

calendar

I hope that I’ve provided some useful chores to help you get ready for winter. If you can think of other little tasks that need doing before the snow sets in seriously, please add it in the comments section below.
