What Prepper Gear would you Buy if you were Given $1000 to Spend?

What prepper gear would you buy if you were given $1000?

Time for a little hypothetical question – imagine that you’re walking down the street and a man steps out in front of you and hands you a $1000 Amazon gift certificate. It’s yours, do order whatever you want, but it must be prepping related.

You can get as many products as you like as long as they total $1000 or less.

Lets use the prices at Amazon as a guide (they have most things) but don’t get too caught up in the details – really I’m asking what gear you’re currently wanting to buy or feel that you need!

Prep Blog Review: The Animals Edition

Prep Review Oct 17Some are our companions, on others we rely for food and others we’d better avoid at all costs if we care for our lives. I’m talking about animals, of course. What would we be without our chicks that provide us with fresh eggs and meat? Or without our goats, that are not just a source of meat and milk, but joy as well. And our dogs, our faithful friends upon which we rely for our safety?

Today we’ve gathered 5 articles that talk exactly about that: the animals we love and cherish for their contribution in our lives, and the ones we should avoid because they’re rather foes more than friends.

Scroll through the articles and let us know in the comments section below which animlas you have in your homestead?

1. Breaking chickens of flying over fences

hens“We had a chicken-flying-fences problem beginning in September, but it took until our staycation rested our minds before we were able to start getting a handle on the issue.

With problems like this, I’ve found that clipping wings (dealing with the symptoms) doesn’t hold a candle to rooting out the real cause of the problem. So I put on my thinking cap and realized there were several issues at play.”

2. Building a Goat Stanchion from A to Z

goats“Our original goat stanchion (made from PVC pipe fittings) was a home school project my daughters built around 20 years ago. It needed a lot of work or replacement to make it useable on a day to day basis.

After looking for a good goat stanchion in various catalogs and on the internet I decided to build one from scratch. A really good sturdy goat stanchion can cost upward of 300 dollars. It seemed to me I could build one for much less and with a little ingenuity I might be able to scrounge up most if not all the materials.”

3. Survival Fishing (Video and Transcript)

fishing“G.M.: Hey, folks. This is Backwoods out here in the… out here in the wilderness again.

Today we’re gonna try to show you how to set up a you know, a primitive fishing pole with just a very small amount of gear that weighs less than an ounce.

We’re down here by the river and there is lots of fish here. You’re gonna see those throughout this video. All we need is some way to get them.”

4. Working Dogs on the Homestead

dogs

“Dogs are awesome. They provide companionship, can protect you, and they are almost always thrilled to see you.

Dogs are a staple member of the farm and homestead team, and they have been since humans started to settle down. Let’s look at some specific roles for our canine friends:

  • Herders
  • Protectors
  • Pest Control (i.e. Hunters)”

5. A Visual Guide to the Most Common Biting and Stinging Bugs

bugs“There are a lot of creepy crawlies out there that can’t help but bite or sting you when you get too close. This infographic shows the 28 arthropods most likely to cause you harm, and explains whether their bite or sting is medically significant.

Thankfully, most bug bites and stings don’t require medical attention (unless you’re allergic). Still this identification guide from Luke Guy and John Goldthwaite, and published by Pest Pro App, can let you know for sure.”

Wandering The Wasteland After The Collapse

Guest post by Bruce Buckshot Hemming

I was reading another survival blog when the age-old Semi versus Bolt gun argument came up.”Our character is out wandering around after the Apocalypse (Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse) and is attacked by dogs. He gallantly fought them off with his SKS. And made the comment that he would have been dead if he had only carried a bolt-action.”

I wrote the Dog attack 3 articles series back in 1999 first published on Captain Dave Survival site. The basic concept was that today people love their dogs so much they would not put them down and let...

The Four Major Mistakes Made In The Wilderness

Wilderness mistakesYou start your day thinking that you must take advantage of the last warm, sunny days of autumn and go on that long awaited and planned for hike. You won’t need much for the short journey, as you’ll be safely home by dawn. And there’s nothing that could ruin this perfect day you have in mind.

That’s unless you get distracted and separate from your group… then, step on some slippery rock and brake a bone or two… and end up isolated in the wilderness, just like the 62 year old lady that survived 9 days in these conditions. But would you?

Let’s see what you can do to make sure you are the survivor in this story, because the same conditions apply when bugging out in the wilderness when SHTF.

1. The Wrong Clothing

hikingYou may think it’s cool to pose for that selfie to impress your friends with of your latest super mountaineer 200 dollar Everest hiking boots, Genuine African Safari style khaki shorts, and 70 dollar authentic Australian Bush hat before your next mountain hiking expedition.

But there’s an important reason why the military went with long pants for jungle work instead of the classic WWII hot climate field shorts. When that first foot long poisonous centipede crawls under your open leg shorts and into those nether regions, I guarantee you will never wear ‘shorts’ of any kind again. Even to bed!

The general rule of thumb is to always dress/carry one layer warmer than you would need for the temperatures you are expecting. Removing or adding as necessary. The lady who survived in the above example had long pants, and a jacket with her which contributed to her night time hypothermia ‘salvation’. Remember ‘Cotton is Rotten’.

Yes, it’s more comfortable, but it retains the moisture too close to your skin. In a desert that might be desirable during the day when you need to stay cool, but not most other places where there are fairly large temperature swings between daylight hours right down to freezing temps after a balmy sunny day.

There is no excuse for being improperly dressed anymore with all the amazing new survival/sporting clothing and accessories they have now.

2. Inadequate Water, Food and Fire Prep.

The 62 year old woman above was smart. Even though it was only a ‘day’ hike trip and the group would come back before dark to a base campground, and the usual thing would be to bring a canteen or two of water with you for the day, in this case, she brought one of those ‘life straw’ filters which is good if you are lost for days and need to drink from dubious sources which you don’t need to get sick from otherwise.

They are small enough not to have any weight related excuses to not carry them. But I would always carry something like the aforementioned pocket Mylar Space Blankets to make a solar still, along with a cup/canteen to capture the condensing water also.

3. No Fire Making Tools or Skills.

campfire Another area where there’s no excuse for not being able to make a fire almost anywhere because of all the small compact fire starting devices and accessories available. I can fit and keep redundant fire starters in one vest or ‘cargo pants’ pocket.

Fires not only keep you from freezing to death but they keep the larger animal predators away and can cook your food if you have some or trapped anything, and provide a locator signal to searchers. But just having the tools does not guarantee anything. You must practice how to use these, especially in the rain.

4. Lack of Good Wilderness Navigational Skills and Equipment.

Last but certainly not the least, you should have a way to immediately call for help if you are lost or down, or trapped, so you don’t have to worry about ’surviving’.

Cell phones with GPS signaling are nice, but if you are out of range, usually only around 5 or six miles of a cell tower, then what?  It’s bad enough that after all my never missed ’experience’ in the wilderness’ of the world that to me ’camping’ nowadays is a cheap motel.

If I ever again found myself really, really needing to go somewhere in the backwoods for any insane reason, I would not even un-ass my truck without my pocket size VHS Air Band compact Transceiver, with a freshly installed battery and a backup one.

Added to that my compass and area maps. With this radio I can actually get around 50 or so kilometers of LOS range which covers a pretty expanded search plane area. And if I got on a hill top I could even tune into and navigate to VOR beacons as many stations are on mountain tops and indicated on maps for location reference.

But If I was really badly stranded and waiting for rescue planes/choppers I’d tune to any aircraft I hear overhead on the Unicom or emergency frequency and talk directly to the pilots to guide them in to where I’d set up my twenty dollar 600 lumen pocket flashlight on the ground with the SOS strobe feature to guide them in.

These radios are pricey, but well worth it if you really value your life. Nowadays, of course, they have good pocket GPS satellite locators which would also be better than a cell phone, unless the cell phone had one in it.

And as for a sound signal device to any ground searchers, I’d pop a round or two from my 16 round capacity Glock 20-C that I would never leave home for the wilderness without. Which is mainly protection from big bears and other things that go ’bump in the night’. And works a lot better than a whistle.

By the way, the equipment mentioned here should be mandatory carry for even a short day hike. And it all fits on your belt or in your cargo pants and jacket/vest pockets. No need even for a small backpack if you want to travel light.

So it all comes down to having a plan before you go out to enjoy yourself. You need to plan to KNOW–NOT imagine– what to expect on your excursion and have the adequate knowledge, skills, and equipment. If you don’t, Mother Nature will make you follow her own plan. And you now know what that is.

The Importance And Potential Of Raising Sheep For Meat After Teotwawki

by Robbins97

raising sheepI have strived for the last 10 years to become more and more self sufficient. This was not the result of any event or premonition. I had no inkling there was a prepper movement or survival community. It was just something in my DNA. I wanted the security and peace of knowing I was prepared. I wanted to take care of my family if something were to happen that would interrupt our modern existence. I was very interested in how people existed on small homesteads in the 30’s and 40’s. This led to my interest in raising and eating livestock on my small piece of property.

How To Choose Your Gun Cleaning Kit

Gun Cleaning Kit

A gun is only safe in the right pair of hands, but safety means much more than good shooting at the right time. You must pay attention to what you’re doing when cleaning your guns, follow the proper procedures and, just as important, use the right tools!

Poorly manufactured tools can ruin parts of the gun and also wear out faster. If you are in a long term post-crisis situation, the wrong gun cleaning kit can be just as bad as none at all.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the best tools on the market, based on my personal experience, not just a number of stars on Amazon.

What to Look for When Choosing Your Gun Cleaning Kit

When choosing a good quality cleaning kit for your firearms always buy the best quality tools that you can afford. If you just want to get a cleaning kit to be used only at home then purchase a universal multiple set. These cleaning sets usually come in a wooden or metal case and have a small diameter cleaning rod plus all the necessary cleaning tools for pistols, rifles and shotguns.

For those shooters that like to store their cleaning supplies in a chest, they are available. A good chest would be one that is made of wood, has a removable tray, a storage drawer, and two padded Y-yoke inserts to hold your rifle or shotgun.

In order to fit as many weapons as possible, there is also an adapter fitting so that you can thread on the necessary brushes, jigs, and mops. These universal cleaning kits usually range from 10 to 12 piece kits, 28 piece kits, 32 piece kits, and last but not least a 68 piece kits.

The size of the kit will be determined by the number of weapons and the caliber of the pistols, rifles, and revolvers that it can be used for. If you own shotguns, these universal kits also have the necessary cleaning tools for all of your favorite gauges.

Field Cleaning Kits

For those individuals who need to clean rifles, shotguns, and handguns in the field, there are individual small compact cleaning kits that are lightweight and easy to use. If it is for a handgun, there will be a small pouch that contains a cleaning rod, a cleaning brush, and all other supplies necessary to clean your handgun.

There are also sets available for shotguns and rifles. All of these cleaning sets will contain  solvent, patches, lubricant, and a quick wipe down towel for wiping down all exterior metal parts to protect them from the  elements.

BoreSnakeFor those individuals who want a very small and very compact cleaning system, try pull through cleaning kits that use flex wire with pull handles instead of a multiple section cleaning rod. The other type of pull through cleaning kit, the BoreSnake, uses a nylon pull through cord that has metal brushes and a cone shaped bore guide.

To use this cleaning system first drop the cone shaped bore guide down through an opened rifle or shot gun receiver till it exits out of the muzzle. Then pull the BoreSnake through the barrel of the weapon. These cleaning kits come with all the necessary cleaning tools, solvents, and lubricants that would be necessary to clean a particular firearm.

No matter which cleaning kit you choose, you should also keep on hand extra supplies on hand to replace those supplies that become dirty or contaminated while cleaning guns. An example of these supplies would be:

  • Cotton cleaning patches, double-ended nylon cleaning brushes, brass cleaning brushes of the caliber necessary for your rifles, shotguns, pistols, and revolvers.
  • Mops for your shotguns in the gauges that you own.
  • Rags for cleaning very dirty areas on your firearms.
  • To help keep from getting your weapons scratched or dinged on the workbench, a good rubber cleaning mat is always a good idea.
  • A set of dental picks is also important to keep on hand for gun cleaning. You can buy a set of 12 picks for about $6.
  • A set of 10 different sized hemostats can cost you about $8. These tools are good to hold something when you don’t have a spare hand to hold it in place.
  • Pipe cleaners are ideal for cleaning gas tubes and other tight areas.

What Are the Best Gun Cleaners, Solvents and Lubricants to Use?

The following are products that I have personally tried and used over the years. They have never let me down and they have always protected my firearms. Cleaning products have come a long ways from the old Hoppe’s number 9 solvent and gun oil.

Today the use of synthetics and Teflon have made it easier to clean and lubricate your firearms in one step instead of many steps. The use of cleaners, scrubbers, and lubricants is a personal choice. In many cases it is a test of trial and error.

Gun Cleaners and Lubricants

Break Free CLP

Break Free CLPThis is a super cleaner, lubricant, preservative containing Teflon and other specialized chemicals. It penetrates and displaces corrosion, dirt, firing residue and water better than ordinary solvents.

This cleaner keeps on working after application and prevents grit from adhering to it. Therefore, coated parts actually become self-cleaning. Guns and parts treated and cleaned with it are never “degreased”—so there’s no chance of rust forming.

CorrosionX

This is another combination cleaner and lubricant for all  weapons. This product cuts through stubborn bore deposits for a more thorough cleaning.

This product lubricates better in all temperature types from the hottest to the very coldest  than products fortified with Teflon. This product bonds to all metals like a magnet to prevent rust even when used in some of the worst weather conditions.

Solvents

Hoppe’s Number 9 Solvent

In my opinion one of the best solvents to use in firearm cleaning is Hoppe’s number 9 solvent, which has been around since 1903. This solvent was designed to remove primer, powder, lead and metal fouling while preventing rust. When using this solvent, remember to have plenty of fresh air in the cleaning area.

Aerosol Gun Cleaners

Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber

Birch Free Gun ScrubberThis gun scrubber is an excellent cleaner for cleaning semi-auto rifles and the semi-auto pistols. Just spray on and then wipe off with paper towels or rags. This product will remove dirt, grease, and grime and leave your weapon with a clean finish that looks like new.

Be sure to clean your weapon over  a towel of some sort or over a trash can. This will let the dirt, over spray, and runoff end up on the towel or in the trash can. The excess chemicals evaporate and just the dirt is left on the towel or in the trash can, not on the weapon.

This stuff cleans so well, it is extremely important to lubricate after cleaning as the surfaces will be left without protection. Also, be aware this gun scrubber is flammable, so don’t smoke or have any ignition source nearby when using it. When using this gun scrubber, it is also important to wear safety glasses and to work in a well ventilated place.

Gun Oils

Hoppe’s Gun Oil

Hope's Gun OileThese products are excellent at oiling and preserving gun steel. They come in drop bottles, spray cans, and lubricated towels that are kept in an airtight box.  Hoppe’s also has an oil with Teflon for those individuals that like this mixture.

Birchwood Casey Gun Oils

These are synthetic oils that are excellent for lubricating and protecting all metal surfaces on firearms. It is a great lubricant for all weather conditions. This product will reduce metal on metal friction on all metal mating surfaces.

It will not gum up or lose its viscosity under extreme temperature variations from -55°F to 300°F. The natural solvency of Synthetic Gun Oil cleans as it oils, while its low evaporation rate assures protection against rust. This product comes in pump spray bottles, spout cans, and aerosol cans.

What to Beware of When Buying a Cleaning Kit

Beware of false advertising or claims on gun cleaning kits and supplies

Before doing any purchasing of gun cleaning kits or supplies do your homework and research these items. There are a lot of false claims that manufacturers and suppliers of gun cleaning kits & supplies make to sell their products.

Do not fall into their trap. If a new cleaning kit or supply appears on to the market, try to find a friend or other reliable person who can give you a good and decent report on the products in question.

No matter which cleaning kit and supplies you choose to use, it is very important to make your final evaluation based on the results  you get. If you happen to find a good kit or supply, then you can safely pass this information along to the manufacturer as well as others interested in this topic.

Paying too much for a cleaning kit that does not meet your needs

A lot of people do not know how to evaluate a good gun cleaning kit. Some people fall into the brand name trap. When this happens, you get what you paid for. Sometimes these kits are just a collection of poor quality cleaning tools and supplies seeking to capitalize on the reputation of previous products made by the same company.

If you do some research, you will find older cleaning kits that used excellent tools, cleaning solutions, and lubricants, while newer versions are considerably lower in quality. To make matters worse, some of these newer kits are made overseas, and they are nothing more than over-priced junk and a price rip-off in the bargain.

Buying a cleaning kit that uses cheap, poorly constructed materials, and accessories

When you find one of these cleaning kit you definitely do not get your money’s worth. Here are  just a few problems you may encounter:

  • The cleaning rods might be too loose even when they are screwed in tight, and cannot be used.
  • Cheap cleaning rods also have a tendency of bending and stripping the connecting sections.
  • The bore brushes maybe cheaply constructed and they will lose their scrubbing diameter in just a few trips down the barrel.
  • Patch cleaning jags may bend, lose the patch in the barrel, or the jag itself may get jammed in the barrel and must be removed when broken.

Using these kits, or even high quality ones can be dangerous to both the firearm and the shooter if you try to take shortcuts during the cleaning process. I once made the fool choice of purchasing a cheap cleaning kit, and the cleaning rod got stuck in the  barrel of the firearm and had to be knocked free since pushing and pulling on the rod did not free the rod.

I didn’t have a hammer or anything else to tap on the back of the cleaning rod handle, so I compounded the mess made by my “penny wise” approach by using  my hand to lightly hit the cleaning rod. Then I got mad and hit it very hard just once. The cleaning rod handle shattered and my hand was impaled on the cleaning rod.

I did not get a good feeling when I looked down and saw a cleaning rod going clean through  my right hand, and will never again use my hand in place of a hammer let alone a cheap cleaning kit! This little gun cleaning incident took me years to live down with my fellow marksman and hunters. To this day I still have a little “reminder” of this incident – every time the weather is damp and cold there is a dull pain in my right hand.

Only Ask Qualified Sales People for Advice

In most good gun shops, sporting goods stores, and gun shows, the employees are well-versed in gun cleaning kits, cleaning supplies, and which lubricants to use in nearly all weather conditions. This is their main business, and they are up to date on all the necessary information.

If you buy your supplies in one of the big generic discount stores or department/superstores, you will be very lucky to just find a salesperson to help you. Finding one that might know anything about gun cleaning kits or shooting supplies can be impossible.

If you cannot go to a gun show or sporting/gun shop to get some good quality advice before approaching other kinds of stores, then at least do some research online. The last thing you will want to do is go into a discount store with no ideas about what to buy and wind up with a bunch of clerks that can’t help you either.

Before you spend your hard earned money, do your homework, and ask questions of people who own and use the cleaning kits and accessories you are thinking about buying.

Beware of cheap, poorly made cleaning kits and cleaning supplies. These cleaning kits and accessories could do damage to your firearms or injure the individual that is doing the cleaning. The best cleaning kit and accessories to buy are those that are a good value, are safe to use, and will give you years of good service.

What Happens When the Sheep Turn on the Sheepdogs

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

The Sheepdog concept has been around in its modern form since 2002 from Dave Grossman’s book, On Killing. He later expanded on this concept in his follow-up book, On Combat. I own and still am working through both of these books and highly recommend them as sources of training material for those of us who […]

Survival Foods To Stockpile For Diabetics

lean meatIf you’re a diabetic, preparing for a disaster can be particularly challenging especially if you’re insulin-dependent. I’ve recommended increasing physical fitness in many of my other articles but I really want to stress it again.

In the last decade, the number of Americans with diabetes has increased by a whopping 50%, and many of those cases are attributed to diet. If you have type 2 diabetes that you can gain control of by losing weight, you increase your chances of survival dramatically if you do so.

That being said, if disaster strikes and you ARE diabetic, stockpiling foods can be a challenge especially if you’re insulin-dependent. If your body doesn’t produce any insulin at all, it’s imperative that you stockpile your insulin in order to survive, but you already know that.

First off, you need to know the rules of the glycemic index. Foods high in fiber slow the release of sugar (glucose) into the system. Foods low in fiber but high in sugar are turned almost instantly to glucose and released rapidly into your blood stream.

How fast your body breaks down the food and releases the sugar that it contains is what you need to control, so you obviously want to shoot for high-fiber, low sugar foods. The goal for you is going to be finding the correct balance of carbohydrates and fiber in order to maintain blood glucose levels that will keep you from crashing or spiking. You’ll also need protein, vitamins and minerals.

Typically, when certain cells in the body detect sugar in the blood, it signals the body to release insulin, which is sort of a key that unlocks your cells to allow the glucose in to be used as energy. As a type 2 diabetic, your body is either resistant to the insulin that your body produces, or your body produces little to no insulin. Either way, foods that release sugar rapidly can be deadly to you because that sugar builds up in your blood and can put you into a coma, then kill you.

So yeah. You need to watch what you eat. Let’s get to that.

Though I’m certainly not a doctor, I do have a diabetic friend who has already made a dietary plan in case SHTF. She’s planning on transitioning into ketosis, a state in which you reduce your carbohydrate intake severely and depend upon fats and protein as your energy sources.

Given a lack of carbohydrates, protein is your body’s back-up fuel and doesn’t require insulin to be broken down and used by the cells for energy. This is going to be tricky for her but it seems like a sound plan, especially considering she’s insulin-dependent despite a healthy diet and lifestyle.

You’ll note below that some of the foods that I list as “off the list” typically aren’t but I’m putting them on this list because they DO spike blood sugar and eating them alone or in large amounts could be disastrous. Considering I don’t know how severe your or your loved one’ diabetes is, I’m assuming the worst sort that can be controlled by diet.

What’s Out

If you’re a diabetic in a survival situation, there are going to be foods that you need to avoid like the plague. Breads, sweets, flour, rice, pasta, starchy vegetables and most fruits are going to be out.

Starchy vegetables include potatoes, corn and peas – they are also off the list. It’s not that these veggies are necessarily bad for you, but they’re high in carbs so you need to avoid them unless you’re eating a small portion with something extremely fibrous, such as beans.

When you’re canning foods, go as easy on the salt as you can if you have high blood pressure. Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, it’s still probably a good idea to go light on the salt, especially if you have metabolic syndrome.

What’s In

You have a wide variety of foods that you can choose from.

Beans

One of the first high-fiber, protein-rich foods that come to mind are beans. Assuming you have your insulin or your body is able to produce some of its own, beans have so much fiber that they actually help slow down other types of carbs as well. They’re also rich in vitamins and minerals so consider dried beans a staple in your stockpile.

Green Vegetables

broccoliObviously, green vegetables are going to be a good source of nourishment for you, too. Most greens have little to no carbohydrates and are extremely high in fiber.

Spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are all great options.

Broccoli, especially, is a good food for you to grow in your survival garden, can or dehydrate because it contains chromium.

Chromium

Chromium is a mineral found in meats, whole grains and some fruits and vegetables. It’s good for diabetics for two reasons. First, it’s been shown in some studies to boost insulin production. It’s also been tentatively shown to be directly involved in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism.

Though the American Diabetes Association says that results are inconclusive, there’s no upper dosage of chromium (meaning it hasn’t been shown to have an “overdose” dosage), it can’t hurt to assume that the studies showing good results are correct.

The average male aged 14-50 should consume at least 25 mcg per day. Females of the same age should consume at least 25 mcg per day. 1/2 cup broccoli has 11 mcg!  Other survival foods that are good sources of chromium are lean beef, eggs and turkey.

Lean Meats and Fish

This is where most of your protein is going to come from and as a matter of fact, meats and fish are where my friend is planning on getting most of her protein and energy. Choose lean meats because they offer all of the protein that you need without clogging your vessels with garbage that can lead to heart disease.

Healthy Fats

olive oilHealthy fats, especially olive oil and coconut oil, are something that you should stockpile because they have been shown to reduce inflammation that’s linked to both diabetes and heart disease.

The monounsaturated fat in these oils won’t increase insulin resistance like butter does and it may actually help revers it.

Olive oil also slows digestion, which will help keep your glucose levels from spiking.

Oatmeal

This stuff is gold for diabetics. It’s so packed with fiber that it’s almost like a glue that lines your stomach and intestines to significantly slow the conversion of carbs into blood sugar. Adding oatmeal into a diabetic-friendly granola bar or loose granola makes for great travel food if you need to bug out. Dried berries and nuts would also be great to add.

If you don’t like oatmeal, use oat flour mixed with eggs to bind your granola bars (add some artificial sweetener if you want to add additional sweetness) or use the oat flour to thicken soups and stews.

Berries

raspberry All berries are good for you because they’re packed with fiber and provide antioxidants. Dry them or can them.

Just be careful, especially if you dry them, to eat them in a limited amount and consume them with other foods, such as oatmeal, that add further fiber to help with the sugar in the berries.

Blue and red berries contain anthocyanins that are believed to help lower blood sugar by boosting insulin production.

Fibrous Fruits

Citrus fruits such as grapefruits, oranges and mango are great sources of fiber and many nutrients that are beneficial to your health. Apples are also super high in fiber and relatively low in sugar. All of these fruits are good to dry or can, but don’t add sugar!

Nuts and Seeds

almonds Nuts and seeds are extremely high in fiber as well as good fats including omega 3’s and protein that all work together to keep your blood sugar low.

They also help prevent heart disease and are good sources of plant sterols that help lower cholesterol.

Peanut butter is a great way to feel full longer and increase fiber and monounsaturated fats.

As I’ve already stated, you’re best way to prepare for survival if you have type 2 diabetes is to do what you can to get it under control now. A small percentage of type 2 diabetics have the disease due strictly to genetics despite a healthy lifestyle but the vast majority of people with this condition can control it with a healthy lifestyle that includes eating right and exercising.

If you are preparing for survival as a diabetic, the advice in this article may be useful in helping you do so. If you have anything to add, please feel free to do so in the comments section below.

5 Ways You Can Make More Money For Preps

I get thousands of emails each month (usually over 3,000 to be exact) and the one problem that I see mentioned over and over is a lack of money to prep, and while I try to keep the advice given on the blog to low-budget preps, it still takes some money to do it, after all it takes money to live, and by prepping you’re insuring that you live through and after a major disaster or social upheaval.

So to prep, even on the most basic level is  going to cost some money for gear and food supplies, even if you just put together the most basic bug out bag you’ll need a few extra dollars....

How The Russian Bear Mauls ISIS

Russia Syria attackIt has been less than two weeks since Russia announced their entry into Syria to support President Assad. Yet, in the short time they’ve been there, they’ve accomplished more than U.S. forces have accomplished over the last several months.

Reports are coming out that ISIS is ready to topple; all that’s needed is a push from ground forces.

This is somewhat reminiscent of both Gulf Wars, where U.S. led forces all but destroyed the fighting capability of Iraq from the air. Then, when the ground forces rolled in, they were doing more of a clean-up operation, rather than fighting a full-scale war.

But There’s One Big Difference…

There are no ground forces waiting to roll into the areas controlled by ISIS and do the mop up operations. That’s because the U.S. led “coalition” isn’t much more than a paper tiger. Rather than having boots on the ground, President Obama has opted for remote control warfare, rather than relying on proven tactics that can ensure victory.

In fact, many are questioning whether Obama truly wants victory against ISIS. One of those questioners is Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Republic.

Putin politely ridiculed U.S. strategy in the area, in the same news conference where he made it clear that as far as Russia is concerned, the existence of ISIS and their armament is the fault of the United States. More specifically, he lays that failure at the door of the White House.

Considering Obama’s many statements in support of Islam and his open support of the Muslim Brotherhood, my gues is that it is quite possible that Obama is hoping for the success of ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), whom he constantly refers to as ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant).

While he still claims to be a Christian, his actions seem to support radical Islam and to be consistently against those who call themselves by the name of Christ, regardless of their denomination. This has led many to believe that Obama seems to be more Muslim than Christian.

Obama’s support of ISIS has included providing them with arms. Oh, he hasn’t openly provided them with arms, but he has provided the arms. Those arms, funneled through other insurgent groups, have made their way into the hands of ISIS warriors.

Vladimir Putin has claimed that ISIS fighters are nothing more than mercenaries, who were armed by the U.S. in an attempt to depose President Assad. Being mercenaries, they left the groups they were working with and joined ISIS, simply because the backers of ISIS offered them more money. The lack of forethought on the part of President Obama and the U.S. State Department made this possible.

Arming rebel forces is always dangerous, something we’ve seen over and over throughout American history. While these operations are normally covered up in a blanket of secrecy; there are many stories of the CIA arming rebel groups, in order to depose leaders that the U.S. government didn’t agree with. In all too many of those cases, the rebels ended up being worse for us than those they replaced.

Cuba comes immediately to mind in this regard. Supposedly, the CIA was responsible for arming and supporting Castro, not realizing what his vision of utopia looked like. That backfired, putting a communist governed nation just a few miles off our shores.

Getting back to ISIS, it’s clear that the guidance from the White House has made it nearly impossible for U.S. armed forces to have much of an effect there. Reports have come out from the military that targets have to be approved by our political leadership, much as they were during the Vietnam War. We should have learned back then that when targets are selected for political reasons, they don’t accomplish military objectives.

Even though we’ve been bombing ISIS for several months, the number of sorties allowed has been severely limited. I’ve heard reports of only two sorties per day. Between that and the political approval required for all targets, it sounds like someone is trying to thwart the efforts of the military.

So, what we’ve had is a show of force or maybe an air show, rather than a concerted attack against a dangerous enemy. An enemy who is beheading people almost daily and posting the videos on YouTube for all the world to see. If America still stands for the things we used to stand for, that should be enough to push us to wipe them off the map.

Video first seen on Fox News

The Russian Coalition Takes Over

Yet, instead of us wiping them off the map, we are sitting on the sidelines, watching Russia do so. With somewhere around 70 sorties per day, as well as cruise missile attacks from her warships, Russia has done more damage to ISIS in a short time, than the United States has done in months.

But Russia has made it very clear that they are not in Syria as part of the U.S. coalition. They are specifically there at the invitation of President Assad. As such, they have formed their own coalition, consisting of Syria, Russia and Iran. This coalition isn’t just interested in destroying ISIS, but also all rebel organizations within Syria, even the ones which have been backed by the United States.

There are reports of Russian ground troops preparing to enter Syria and attack the insurgents, doing the mop-up operation that NATO forces aren’t doing. If this happens, the destruction of ISIS will clearly be a Russian victory, not an American one.

While the Russian bear has been mauling ISIS and other insurgent groups, it hasn’t been without a price. So far, four cruise missiles, launched from Russian warships have fallen short, landing in Iran, rather than hitting their intended targets in Syria. There is no news yet of how much damage those missiles have caused, whether there were any civilian casualties or Iran’s reaction to the error. While it could be seen as an act of war committed by the Russians, the existing coalition may mitigate that interpretation.

The Russian coalition has much farther reaching implications than just protecting the existing government in Syria. By entering into a coalition with Iran, commonly known for being an aggressive, rogue nation, Russia is strengthening her ties with the Iranian government. Considering the recent nuclear agreement brokered by Obama and Kerry, the implications of that coalition could be huge.

It is widely agreed that Russia might not want to initiate a nuclear war with the United States, any more than the United States wants to have nuclear war with Russia. But Iran is another thing all together. Iran’s Supreme Leader has already stated his intent to attack the United States with nuclear weapons, when he can. We are, as his predecessor named us, “The Great Satan” in Iranian eyes, and as such, we should be destroyed.

While Russia might not openly condone such an attack, they could quietly and privately support it. Either way, they stand to gain greatly by it. For decades, the Soviet Union and the United States were the world’s two superpowers. Then, with the fall of the Iron Curtain, we were down to one. But in the ensuing years, China has gained in strength; both militarily and economically. So today, with the resurgence of Russia, it could easily be said that there are three.

Of those three, Obama is doing everything he can to remove the United States from the equation. Socialist policies and massive regulations are destroying commerce, especially manufacturing. He has drastically cut military spending, while using the military as a social experiment in integrating homosexuals and transsexuals into the military. At the same time, he has wavered uncounted times on foreign issues, sending an unclear message to the world.

With the United States on the decline, Russia is poised to become the new world leader. The big question is, what type of leader would they be? The old Soviet Union was very imperialistic, working overtime to spread socialism around the globe. What message will this new Russian Federation preach to countries who seek their aid? Will it be one of good or one of evil?

It is clear that there is no turning back for Russia. They have invaded Syria, at Syria’s request and are not likely to back out anytime soon. Russian media is backing Putin, unlike American media which has almost always been against United States involvement in other countries. So Putin has the country behind him, something the next U.S. president won’t be able to count on.

We could be seeing a major shift in world power, playing out right before our eyes. If so, Obama will have truly accomplished the “fundamental change” he promised. I just wonder if the world that emerges will be the world that he wants.
